@@vinslungur It switches between In Rainbows, Kid A and Hail to the Thief. I listen mostly to live performances so I won't comment too much on album quality. Just naming those albums because they contain most of my favorite songs.
Imagine calling the second half "desperate to please", Bloom "too repetitive", Little by Little "robotic", Codex "pretty lackluster," Give Up the Ghost's live looping "Fleet Foxes-like" and Separator "a wimper."
I think, compared to the tracks Radiohead usually end an album on it feels more anti-climatic - but if they're good at anything it's throwing you a curve ball when you least expect it.
The first time I "discovered" Radiohead was listening to amnesiac front to back. I hadn't heard anything like it and instantly wanted more. TKOL was the next Radiohead album I fell in love with and I could not stop listening to it. Everyone always seems to give it a hard time but it's always been one of my favorite of their albums. It got me into experimental music as a genre like nothing else ever had before. They are truly a band that doesn't have a bad album but I will say the one I've listened to the least and can sometimes be difficult to get through in one sitting is definitely Pablo Honey. I know creep was a big deal and they "get a pass" because it was their first album but you can not tell me that Pablo Honey is better than the TKOL. In the in rainbows video Middle 8 talks about how Radiohead was able to make music that was about the experience and skip the nonsense of a label. It feels like a turn around for him to now start a video by stating how bland Pablo Honey is and then go on to say TKOL is the worst Radiohead album. To me the album is an enjoyable experimental listen beginning to end that changed what I thought music could be.
Another band without a bad album is probably Arctic Monkeys, their debut showcased their energy and passion, Favourite Worst Nightmare depicts how dynamic they can be, Humbug is more thought out and has some of the bands best moments, Suck It And See has some of Alex Turner's best lyrics, AM is a more approachable album for the general public with a mix of hip hop and rock, Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino is their most unusual album and pushes the band to their limits and is my personal favorite and The Car utilizes orchestral strings
YES THANKYOU! I love it almost as much as IRFTB....although it took time to grow on me, which is to say it took me time to realise how good it was. TKOL is to rhythm what IR is to melodies........and to say Pablo is better is just wrong.
Funny thing is I've literally overlooked the Basement version of TKOL as I was never the biggest fan of that album. Re-listening to even the studio version is already growing on me tho.
As a pretty big radiohead fan i can safely say TKOL is my second fave Radiohead album. On some days it's first equal with Kid A. a lot of the criticisms of this album were clearly deliberate from the bands point of view considering their influences at the time. It's meditative, brittle, crisp, hypnotic and if you learn to accept the rhythmic language over time it becomes the breeziest radiohead album to play from start to finish. also Separator is one of the most uplifting songs and closers they've ever made.
Out of curiosity did it become your favorite over time or only 1st couple of listens? TKOL took a while for me to get into but i just cant say its better than Kid A
As someone who has been obsessed with Radiohead and their whole discography over the past few months I would say that The King of Limbs is solid Radiohead, it was just so many years after their last album so fans expected another masterpiece, but the reality that it was really different (ik all Radiohead is but i think you know what I mean) and most of all it had a really short track list.
I get that The King of Limbs might not push the buttons that more rock driven Radiohead albums push. But as someone who is really into techo/electronic music this album does a lot. It builds on the electronic dance music vibes that you can hear in Atoms for Peace and The King of Limbs lends itself much better to being played in a techno night club than most other Radiohead albums. And of course it provided the source material for the TKOL RMX 1234567 which turn those repetitive loops and whimpers into some of the best electronic tracks of the decade. A transformation that would be much harder with tracks from a more rock style back ground.
Without ‘The King Of Limbs’, we would have never had ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’. An album which I believe is one of their best yet. Radiohead is a unique band that is capable of truly anything, and that’s what I absolutely love about them. I can’t even fathom what they will have in store for us next! 😄
TKOL is honestly what really made me interested in Radiohead. Lotus Flower blew me away when I first heard it and to this day, I rank the album as one of their best. I listened to it once when taking a jog in the woods and it was a shockingly transcendental experience. The album uses the coldest sounds to channel nature, and it's an amazing achievement.
If they had included "The Daily Mail", "Staircase" and "Supercollider" in the tracklist,it would have been much much better in my opinion. I mean, "The Daily Mail" it's one of my favorite Radiohead songs, and it's not on the record. (By the way,can we get some respect for my boy "Amnesiac"?)
Some of my favourite songs are on this album. Bloom, codex, separator, they’re so atmospheric. I find the ostinato electronic rhythms hypnotic. I actually like that the album sort of has a light ending, it makes you feel like you’re floating away. Pablo honey is my least favourite, but I can’t say it’s the worst, because it comes down to taste.. I liked the video though, and I agree that the from the basement of this album is fantastic.
The King of Limbs revels in subtlety and texture. You say these songs don't evolve, and that's just not true. They may evolve in less obvious ways (I think of the epic choruses of Let Down or the soft to loud dynamics of Creep), but they do evolve. There is a quiet revelation in the way Separator blooms (excuse the pun) with chiming guitars as it reaches its close. Morning Mr Magpie delivers one of the band's more engaging moments with its constantly shifting atmosphere crescendoing into sludge drum heaven. Bloom is perfection; I'd listen to that drum loop for hours. Give me the King of Limbs over most records period.
I think people seem to also forget that Radiohead made some of the best B-sides that spawned from this album. It's extremely short, songs like Staircase, These Are My Twisted Words, Supercollider, etc. I really wish we got those tracks on the album because the album itself is so short.
but think of it, the name itself sort of defines it's chilling awkward and uncomfortable nature. I take it as more of a textural collection of sorts, it holds some incredibly beautiful tracks in my opinion. Separator is one of my favourite radiohead tracks because of that slow build to such a beautiful melting soundscape. And that whimper at the end is the albums ghostly dissolve as it disappears. The album itself is a ghost. No defined edges and sort of a bit strange, but holds some sort of beauty.
This was the 4th Radiohead album I listened to ever. It was back in 7th grade after my dad had just showed me a moon shaped pool, I was starting to crave Radiohead more and more and wanted more but didn’t know what and this one caught my attention. Now it’s one of my favorites, especially separator probably being in my top 5 Radiohead songs. And if you think this is over than you’re wrong
This is spot on. The only thing that I think is missing from this video, is the fact that expectations for The King of Limbs was through the roof. Because In Rainbows broke the industry with its "pay what you want" model + them dropping a surprise part 2 album to accompany it - The King of Limbs had become an event. TKOL had a similar online rollout (I remember in the UK and in New York they also handed out breaking news edition newspapers on the streets to tease the record). So for Radiohead fans, it was a very important moment. IMO that is why when we finally heard the album, it was a big let down. You are absolutely right about your critiques. I remember at the time, Radiohead fans complained about the album feeling very anemic / cold. The constant loops felt lazy and boring (especially when compared to their past albums). Basically the consensus at the time, was that it felt like it was two EPs recorded at different times and shoved together to make an LP. Interestingly if you. go back to interviews post In Rainbows launch, Yorke on several occasions claimed they weren't going to releases another album again. That they would. instead release new music like two singles at a time. So a lot of fans theorized that the TKOL was the result of their plans to drop 2-3 songs, but then deciding to combine it for a full length LP at the last minute. Based on your research, this doesn't sound accurate. But the final album really does not feel like a cohesive project. And totally sounds like two EPs or projects combined. Another thing I would like to add, is that Radiohead did a massive greatest hits tour before recording In Rainbows. Throughout those shows, they debuted most of that record live. There we a handful of tracks that IMO were 10x better live and were RUINED in the studio. Hardcore Radiohead fans will recall, Videotape was freakin incredible live, and made completely toothless in studio. So the band had a history at that point of over-thinking production of songs that were already perfect and making them worse. So TKOL being the way it is kind of doesn't shock me (that the live versions would be so much better. I know in that case they had made the songs digitally first).
My first thought was instantly king of limbs, and the funny thing is recently my opinion of it has drastically improved from what it once was, but it’s still the worst imo
It really took me years to understand this album but when i did my mind was blown. I needed the musical maturity to understand it. Pablo Honey is a forgettable abomination. Growing up in 90s i only started to get into them with Kid A but with Amnesiac they really got me hooked and from then...my favorite band of all time with Amnesiac being in my top 5 albums to take on a desert island.
Reminds me of Remain in Light by Talking Heads. They had a similar process of repeating and layering upon parts, starting with the drums and bass, and for the live shows they had to have a bigger lineup instead of just the four of them. Quite incredible.
I would say the least popular album is The King Of Limbs by far, but Bloom might be my favorite single track. It just has this undescribable momentum that keeps the listener intrigued throughout. Specifically I believe the live version of Bloom is one of the most incredible tracks I've ever heard, just pure fluidity in a track that absolutely envelopes the listener.
Keeping it minimalistic and mild is what made it so great. I don't know any other album that sounds so robotic, yet literally sucks you into its dense, pristine forest atmosphere, descending deeper with each consequent song.
Your editing and graphics are insanely high quality and outside of your amazing voice are a huge reason I watch you. It's just so clean and easy on the eyes.
Found Radiohead because of a documentary on PBS. The first song I ever heard was a clip of give up the ghost in the basement session. I will always king of limbs for that reason.
I think this album is one of those that is going to be looked upon very fondly in the future, and honestly I really enjoy this record; if you think of this record like you would an electronic record (Aphex Twin being the most comparable) it really shows itself nicely. I think there’s a lot of beauty in it, and it feels like a nice breeze while walking through nature
Separator is my favorite Radiohead song followed by Little By Little and codex. I do agree the way the record feels is pretty blah but separately the tracks really shine. Maybe that’s why it’s called “Separator”
It's really though for me to think like that. I was introduced to Radiohead with King of The Limbs from the basement. I confess that it was completely strange when I heard the album version, but songs like Separator or Give up the ghost were still amazing. For me, it was the songwriting that it made me interested on listening more of them. After that, I decided to listen to their whole discography. When I heard Pablo Honey, it almost got me thinking of abandoning the band... I think that Pablo Honey is actually a bad album - I'd much rather listen to Nirvana. The only thing that kept me motivated to keep listening to Radiohead was TKOL songwriting. Luckily, I insisted and when I heard Ok Computer my mind blown. So, at least for me, it's pretty clear that King of Limbs is amazing for many reasons, but I can see how frustrating it can be and that I was lucky that I've listened From The Basement version first.
I think it's unfair to compare this to other radiohead albums. Most other albums focuses on building up the songs to a climax where as this album stands out for being more low key and with an electronic song structure, catchy loops and just great sounding production. Honestly really underrated.
When I'm really sad, the second half of TKOL is the closest I've feel to a sincere hug from a beloved friend. I really love the second half, I wish you all can give it a chance.
I’ve just revisited TKOL after seeing the ‘from the basement’ videos and after 10 years i’d put it up there with In Rainbows as my favourite Radiohead album. The last 3 tracks are probably the best 3 tracks on an album i’ve ever listened to. This album is that far ahead of its time in another 10 years it will be regarded as Radiohead’s finest work.

I love The King of Limbs. Separator is one of my favorite Radiohead songs.
Yes! 👏🏽
thank you separator is fucking great
SAME
give up the ghost is probably my second fave
💯
Glad to see the TKOL defenders - I’ve always enjoyed it immensely with Codex and Lotus Flower high on my list of favourite Radiohead songs. It probably is the album I’ve listened to the most.
I don’t know anything about music technically and I appreciate your observations about the coldness and minimalism, but I personally like that about the album.
Keep up the good work!
TKOL from the basement is on par with In Rainbows imo.
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave
Thanks dad
No, it isn't. I'm sorry.
@@vinslungur It switches between In Rainbows, Kid A and Hail to the Thief. I listen mostly to live performances so I won't comment too much on album quality. Just naming those albums because they contain most of my favorite songs.
I wish they added The Daily Mail and Staircase into TKOL as well..
2 great tracks..
Imagine calling the second half "desperate to please", Bloom "too repetitive", Little by Little "robotic", Codex "pretty lackluster," Give Up the Ghost's live looping "Fleet Foxes-like" and Separator "a wimper."
When you called Separator a whimper, that hurt 😞
Yeah. That’s kind of a bullshit word to use for that tune. It’s beautiful.
EXACTLY. It's more of a fresh sigh, really. Like ascending through clouds but it's chill, don't worry.
@@elrabeechum5180 I always imagine it as going down a whirlpool as a fish
I think, compared to the tracks Radiohead usually end an album on it feels more anti-climatic - but if they're good at anything it's throwing you a curve ball when you least expect it.
My favourite Radiohead song. I died inside when he said that.
TKOL from the Basement is so overlooked
this is what made me *love* TKOL
YES THANKYOU! I love it almost as much as IRFTB....although it took time to grow on me, which is to say it took me time to realise how good it was. TKOL is to rhythm what IR is to melodies........and to say Pablo is better is just wrong.
Better than the studio versions imo
Funny thing is I've literally overlooked the Basement version of TKOL as I was never the biggest fan of that album. Re-listening to even the studio version is already growing on me tho.
Give me those spinny camera shots
As a pretty big radiohead fan i can safely say TKOL is my second fave Radiohead album. On some days it's first equal with Kid A. a lot of the criticisms of this album were clearly deliberate from the bands point of view considering their influences at the time. It's meditative, brittle, crisp, hypnotic and if you learn to accept the rhythmic language over time it becomes the breeziest radiohead album to play from start to finish. also Separator is one of the most uplifting songs and closers they've ever made.
"I am willing to bet no one's favorite song is on The King of Limbs" Meanwhile Codex is one of my favorite songs of all time
Yeah, Codex is in my Top 5 easy, tho I agree the album is very so so
Literally lol. My favorite is Separator
Whilst it is my least favourite project, I can’t lie, Feral is one of my favourite joints
Bloom!
Separator is in my Top 20 but yes no other tracks from TKOL is in my Top 20
Funny how The King Of Limbs is my favorite record of all time lol.
Out of curiosity did it become your favorite over time or only 1st couple of listens? TKOL took a while for me to get into but i just cant say its better than Kid A
Same bruh it's so overhated 😭
Definitely not Amnesiac.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
My Man😂✌🏾
Yesss! Amnesiac❤️😍
Amnesiac gang is strong in this, yay! Hahaha so many comments defending Amnesiac ♥️
Amnesiac deserves all the love it gets. brilliant record.
Simply their best IMO
Please, please do a video on a moon shaped pool, that record is an absolute masterpiece
Thank you I thought I the only one who noticed he didn't even mention that in the video
I feel like I was the only person who loved TKOL from the first litsen.
Codex, Separator, Bloom, Lotus Flower. are amazing tracks
I did too
@@eliasquijanobeltran8580
As someone who has been obsessed with Radiohead and their whole discography over the past few months I would say that The King of Limbs is solid Radiohead, it was just so many years after their last album so fans expected another masterpiece, but the reality that it was really different (ik all Radiohead is but i think you know what I mean) and most of all it had a really short track list.
Kinda hurts to hear Separator described as "ending things on a whimper" since it's one of my favorite songs from them, but great video nonetheless!
I'm very heartened to see so many comments here about how great Separator is. _Whimper_ my arse!
The Lotus Flower video is still one of the greatest things they ever made and I’m not taking any other opinion on Thom’s beautiful dancing.
LISTEN TO YOUR *HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART*
Burgers float into my room
It’s pretty awkward and cringe, but since he’s a famous musician everything he does is cool
"5/4 breakbeat"
"uneven time signatures"
i loved the video, but everything on this album was in 4/4
Without ‘The King Of Limbs’, we would have never had ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’.
The butcher is amazing too :-)
The King Of Limbs is a masterpiece
Some of my favourite songs are on this album. Bloom, codex, separator, they’re so atmospheric. I find the ostinato electronic rhythms hypnotic. I actually like that the album sort of has a light ending, it makes you feel like you’re floating away. Pablo honey is my least favourite, but I can’t say it’s the worst, because it comes down to taste.. I liked the video though, and I agree that the from the basement of this album is fantastic.
Say what you want but “Bloom” and “Separator” are great songs.
After listening to the From the Basement sessions, it feels like they released a rough draft of the album.
Their “worst” is still way better than most albums, PERIOD.....
supercollider is such an amazing song, wish they hadn't cut it
The Butcher as well 👍🏻
@@vb2388 The Butcher is in my top 5 RH songs for sure.
2:56 c'mon that's one good joke, but did you intentionally put that there???
There is no worst RH album, there are only ones that aren’t as great as their others.
Like Pablo Honey
I fundamentally disagree with you but everything was very well presented and argued
"The group had yet to fully *prove themselves"*
...i see what you did there
what am i missing? is that a baking reference?
@@pukeyourguts prove yourself is a song on Pablo honey
Said the word "Just" a few times too. Definitely good a knack for the subliminal.
I think the Little by Little “robotic” feel was intentional. But overall good points and helpful to me as a creative to analyze this.
oh no pop is dead long live pop
What will happen to me,if I say that I enjoy Pop Is Dead a lot?
Will karma police be after me?
@@GhostSound2 it'd be no surprises if the karma police came after you. It'd be a real let down if they didn't attempt to apprehend you.
@@GhostSound2 honestly i enjoy it too, it's funny and i think if it wasnt a radiohead song people would like it more lol
Lotus flower sounds like a pop in the radio
@@zynel413 After all, it is their job to put everything in it's right place.
I absolutely adore Separator. Definitely in my top 5 Radiohead songs.
My favorite of radiohead, such an atmosphere and it's like a call to the unknown. I don't know but when I listen to it I feel something
was just gonna reply this. one of my favorite songs from them and definitely better than creep lol
Already offended, but go ahead. 😂
KoL is a great album imo. But I definitely consider it a deep cuts album, so I get why some people don’t like it.
'Bloom', 'Lotus Flower', and 'Give Up the Ghost' are definitely some of my favourite RH songs!
Jokes on you there isn’t a worst RH album

Great to Greatest
Yes! You returned to Radiohead. A Moon Shaped Pool next maybe? :)
What is amnesiac doing in the thumbnail?!
Separator is my favorite Radiohead song followed by Little By Little and codex. I do agree the way the record feels is pretty blah but separately the tracks really shine. Maybe that’s why it’s called “Separator”
TKOL is beautiful, has an enveloping vibe, only wish they'd made the "part 2" that fans were hoping for at the time
King of Limbs and MGMT's "Congratulations" were the moments I realized I didn't need music critics.
i like when these songs pop up randomly in my mix but not back to back.
We can all agree that the cover art for all of Radiohead’s albums is fantastic tho
4:49 wasnt the whole point of Kid A to make a robotic, inhumane atmosphere? Ur just reaching at this point for reasons to hate on TKOL
I think it's unfair to compare this to other radiohead albums. Most other albums focuses on building up the songs to a climax where as this album stands out for being more low key and with an electronic song structure, catchy loops and just great sounding production. Honestly really underrated.
i was so scared with that thumbnail, amnesiac is probably my favourite radiohead album
all this would not have happened if they had added "the daily mail" in the album, between little by little and feral
i love the lotus flower remix in the intro, it kind of spoils which album you were gonna talk about if you're a fan
I fell in love with king of limbs the first time I heard it.
I deleted it after 10 minutes of listening...lol

I’ve just revisited TKOL after seeing the ‘from the basement’ videos and after 10 years i’d put it up there with In Rainbows as my favourite Radiohead album. The last 3 tracks are probably the best 3 tracks on an album i’ve ever listened to. This album is that far ahead of its time in another 10 years it will be regarded as Radiohead’s finest work.
