Great video. The TAPS works really well with AK mags with a few mods. The four center pouches work with the shock cord mod and the radio pouches on the end will hold AK mags too. The other pouches do not hold any mags that well because of the curve of the rig, they are better left to tq's, flash lights ect.
Thanks Lucas! I think I've seen a video on the newer Eagle canteen/utility pouch (elastic top and mesh bottom) hold AK mags very well. They're deeper than the old ones with pockets. I think the Specter Universal double side by side pouch may hold them as well - has length adjustable cover flap.
Ak mags fit better in pouches with the rounds facing up, and that also pre orients your hand on the mag to rock in. Ar mags work well placed brass down to pre orient your hand to grab the bottom of it so you Can slide the top into the rifle firmly
@@solargeneraldo what works for ya. I just find that the locking lug on ak mags tend to snag on my pouches on the draw, the butt end of the mags not so much
Have to unfortunately say that I'm not having good luck with the USGI triple mag, open top pouch. It'll comfortably hold 2 magazines, but when you load 3 mags, the locking tabs on the magazines overlap and bind when attempting to draw. It's certainly an affordable way to carry magazines, but additional modifications will be required.
@VentureSurplus I have added the shockcord for retention, but I'm still having some binding issues. (Side note here, TAPCO AK mags are just a straight no-go lol. No issues out of Magpul or surplus steel.) I may take the USMC's approach and attempt to stretch the fabric by shoving something oversized into the pocket after boiling the pouch for some time. My other options are to modify the pouch or just run 2 rifle mags and figure out a use for the 3rd slot (kydex insert for different magazine, compact IFAK, etc.).
I use one of the two 200 round SAW pouches MOLLEd on the sides of my ruck to keep an extra 6 30 round AK mags at the ready. On the left side of my RACK vest I MOLLE a 200 round SAW pouch as a utility pouch for paracord, LED flashlight, headlamp, batteries, meds, etc... but can use it to carry another 6 AK 30s if I wanted to. Because of the way the RACK vest wraps around the body it definitely works in the prone. I carry my AK mags in 4 double mag pouches on the center, main MOLLE field ( 8 rifle mags on the vest, plus the mag loaded in the rifle ). Left side of the vest is for my trauma kit. If you don't mind running them open-topped, a USGI canteen cover will carry 4 AK mags ( you can then cinch the piece of shok cord to give you some level of retention, tho it's not vey secure ).
Can always do a war belt rig for a we have smersh at home vibe. The ATS war belt and suspenders, a 200 round pouch on each side, and maybe a butt pack would give you a pretty slick front for not a lot of money especially if you get the cheaper plastic buckle for their inner belt
Good video. Maybe do it with some of the magpul ak47 pmags next. They are pretty common and they are bigger than the metal ak mags, so finding pouches for them is kinda difficult.
I just run a naked front plate carrier and chest rig for my AK-103. I don't like any of the typical MOLLE pouches for AK-47 magazines. There's a different story for my AK-101 and future AK-74 build.

@@VentureSurplus Thank you. I curious how come I see a lot of US army etc only have 3 magazine pouches on the front of their body armour. Are there ever any pouches around the side. Also wouldn't if be better if the three on the front were double so you could fit six magazine instead of 3. Just curious.

That 2, 30 rd mag pouch makes for a great holster in a pinch also.
Also a Eagle Industries double M4 mag pouch makes a good holster. Especially in a vehicle when you don't want anything on your hips.
Love your guys information vids. Keep up the good work
About second pouch: you can put 2 mags, if you wanna.
I have an AK-74 in 5.45 and a 5.56 AK and they might fit better in the pouches than an AKM
I've heard that from a few other guys, once I get my hands on some of those mags I'll give it a try

Excellent video. Can you please do this same video type but for battle rifle magazines?

Sometimes the QC on them can be a bit..... loose. Easy way to overcome that is to add shock cord retention though.

Oh, gotcha. AK mags are definitely a pain. Hopefully stretching it works.
Eagle 7.62 kydex pouches work.
I can run 5 in a 200rd SAW pouch! I imagine this wouldn’t work to well on a chest rig tho. Sure as heck couldn’t go prone too good!

Once I get ahold of a few I'll be doing another run of these
Would you do one for 40 rd AK magazines? having issues finding modern magazine pouches that will fit them.
Preferable a double stack molle pouch.
Use the 1 quart eagle industries canteen pouch, best ak mag pouch ever
They hold 2 very well, 3 if you want to push it a bit

wow a surplus channel, and they didnt even test the ALICE 3 mag pouches?????
1) he is not selling those.
2) AK mags don't fit the GI 3 mag pouches. At least, they don't fit 3 to a pouch.
