How To SAVE Your Mac's SSD! (M1 Swap Memory Issue/Browser Disk Caching)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 чер 2024
- You may be aware of some Mac users reporting excessive data being written to their internal SSD. In a previous video, I determined that although swap memory can cause this, the browser disk write cache can also write a huge amount if you watch a lot of UA-cam videos or similar streamed content. In this video I show you how to disable this feature on several popular third-party browsers, including Chrome, Brave, Opera, Firefox, and Edge. I am using the current M1 Mac versions of these browsers.
Click and download Filmora Mac version for FREE from the official website: bit.ly/2PvyVIT
Paste into Chrome (also works on Brave/Opera): chrome://flags/#turn-off-streaming-media-caching-always
IF YOU HAVE ISSUES PASTING THE ABOVE, DELETE THE #, COPY AND PASTE INTO YOUR BROWSER SEARCH BAR, AND THEN RE-ADD THE # BEFORE turn-off

None of settings are effective in Firefox and in chrome. I guess they have updated the flag settings. Is there any way around to disable disk writing in 2022?
Yo apple should pay you if they don’t already. You have given me way more useful information about this laptop than apple ever has, by far. Good looks man.
Oh don't worry I send an invoice to Tim Cook every month for services rendered. Have yet to receive payment though...

@@j.d6009 not true. At any given time apple has 4 new laptops on the market, all of which usually overlap in performance. Apple doesn’t do a damn thing to help anyone differentiate between them in any meaningful way. I think they just prefer everyone buy the most expensive machine that they can afford. Be honest. knowing what everyone knows now, do you think many of us would have still bought the pro considering that the air is basically the same machine for less money? Prolly not. I wouldn’t have. Ooi.
Thank you! Very timely for me. Being aware of this issue (although it appears the write capacity is way higher than people assume - e.g. if you take the SMART tools readouts people have famously posted to report excessive write usage in 2 months, 15.7TB used 1% and 150TB used 3%, which equate to 1570TB & 5000TB respectively), I personally noticed 400GB had been written in the course of a morning of just surfing around - turned out in the background was a single website with a couple of streaming videos playing continuously.
I love the asthetics of your setup.
Oh wow, thanks for a better approach to limit caching in browsers! This is much better than the plugin methods I mentioned in my latest video. Thank you for doing quality research on those!
Bro does it affect ssd permanently? I mean its just the „other” data - these catches and it disapear after restarting mac or it stay permanently?
@@rageshawty6976 it wears the drive down and it will eventually die. Since the drive is soldered, you'd have to replace the whole machine.
@@NeptuneSega so how to avoid this?
This has been so helpful. Thanks a lot!. Just a question- what if I use the UA-cam app from the ipad
?
I'd also recommend using a Tab Suspender add on on top of disabling the caches. However, that might not be the best option for people with very slow internet connections. No point keeping 10s of tabs in memory which will eventually go to disk swap, if you're not using them.
Was a tad confused when I heard you pronounce "cache" as "kaysh," then realized it's a thing in Australian English. Great stuff as always. You've been very helpful in my consideration on whether or not I should purchase an M1 MacBook.
American english just sounds more like "cash". haha.
Every time its said it really grates on my brain. Sound so pretentious. Hehe.
Thank you so much for making videos like this 🙌🏽
Many thanks. Because of your video, I fixed the issue with monthly terabytes write to my ssd. I also found that a process named "bird" was writing 30 terabytes to my ssd from the date of purchase - 5 months. This process is associated with ICloude Drive and I had to abandon uploading the document folder to the cloud, but this is more a plus than a minus.
Thank you, this was very helpful!
This method no longer works as Chrome no longer shows the option to disable said setting. Perhaps an updated video is in order?
Thanks for this! Were there any other potential issues you didn't get to mention in the making of this eetswa video? 😊
Thanks for the info! That means that if you use safari, you don't have to worry about your ssd? Is there something else that affects the ssd apart from browsers?
Thank you very much. But what about other programs and especially the "kernel task"? This one is still heavily writing to my SSD though.
yah same
I cant get access to it, is there any update for that?
I found the 11.3 Beta 5/6 have resolved my issues on excessive TBW.
Safari seems to be better at SWAP memory management compared to 11.2.3.
I prefer Safari because it has the best Reader Mode in my opinion and iCloud Keychain.
I just recently bought the m1 Mac book pro and I love it. Thank you for the info 🙏
Awesome tips bro, if you have more please share with us!! thank you so much!!!
Also useful for Windows users who watch tons of videos and are paranoid about their SSDs ;)
Thank you.
noticed that turn-off-streaming-media-caching flags are gone from Chrome v94, what to do ?
"It's only a issue if you see hours of vídeos everyday" ups 🙊🙈😅😞
I don’t if you already replied this, but what’s the stand you use next to your monitor, and how do you keep the MacBook close without going to sleep?
Thanks a lot for your videos ❤️
Great work! Good job, i really like it! :)
Remember that Chrome has one more Flag:
Turn off caching of streaming media to disk while on battery power.
Make sure to turn this one off as well.
PS: Thank you for letting people know. Great content.
Someone else commented this already and I tested it - as long as you turn off the one I mention in the video, that overrides this setting! So no need to touch the battery power one.
Brilliant video... love the Australian accent my friend.
There is no option to turn off cache. Upon further research, it would appear that this option is no longer available.
Thank you very much. It works. Very useful!
this option seems to be missing now in the settings. I'm currently uing Brave 1.41.100
Thank you for your great video. I am planning on buying a m1 mba. I have a question. in a previous video, you said that 8 GB of ram was enough. However in the video I see that you are using 7 GB of ram out of 8 GB with only few apps open. why? Is there something I don't understand?
Hey great video! I've been trying to disable browser disk caching on Naver Whale. It's based on chromium so it should work the same way as chrome. But I can't seem to find the option/selection to disable it
Can you have a video detailing the "other" section of the ssd drive and how to see what files can be deleted in the "other" section? It's increasing day by day and I don't know how to clean it up without any other consequences. Thank you
I only use Safari and My M1 MBP 8/256 has used 21% of SSD life in 5 months writing 258TB to disk. This means the SSD will die at just under 2 years which is unacceptable. Apple are going to have huge warranty problems.
very helpful video thanks
Great video, thank you.
Thank you mate!!
Hey Liam, I have a question concerning safari's ram usage: I don't know if you read or heard about it, but there is currently a bug with Disney plus, where it uses practically all Ram available and eventually crash/ safari reloads the page. It's really annoying because it happened literally every 5 to 10 minutes:( Can you help me with that? Greeting from Germany @CreatedLabs
Please make a video on how to treat the battery if i use my mac in a docking statioin.
It's always connected to the chargeer
Thanks again, I guess 🍎 has to thank you more than us.
This got me thinking, how much does iphone do swap memory usage since it has less ram as compared to android. Would be great if you can do a review on it.
The thing with iOS is you don't need android levels of ram to run it well apple are good with optimizing there software for there hardware
@@j.d6009 which test? The ones I've seen the a14 smokes the snapdragon 888 and the exynos variant.

My mac's kernel task has the highest 'bytes written". Is there any solutions? What could be the problem?
Running non M1 native apps. TBW is because of Rosetta transtlations mostly.
if i dont want to do that to maintain eser experience, will having 16G RAM , solve the SSD issue cause by browser disk caching? my question is to get higher ram or higher SSD ?
Seems doesn't work both chrome & brave (apple chip version). It' seems like total missing, no such option. Can you check again?
have you found any workaround now that the turn off media caching flags is no longer there in latest chrome, and unable to bring it back by unexpired v91 flags anymore
can you provide an update about chrome? this option is gone.
it works!! on Mac m1 8 RAM 256 gb macbook pro
The chrome flag doesn't appear to exist in the newer releases at least. It doesn't look like this was an April Fools video but this problem I have seriously needs a solution fast or my device will not last long with ~300GB written daily.
Hello mate. I've copied and paste provided link into my brave browser but unfortunately I'm not able to find: turn off caching and streaming... option to enable it. Is it possible that this option is no longer available? cheers
Sadly this flag was removed starting Chrome V92+ , any ideas on how to stop this again?
I need this option because Google removes the flag. any fixes?
I have a 2018 Mac Mini with 32GB of RAM. Should I disable the cache in my browser since I have a decent sized ram and also have an SSD?
This longer works in Google Chrome. The caching option is not available anymore. I wonder if Chrome is now optimized by default?
I cannot see your recommendation in settings, seems chrome now don't offer this option or they've made it incredibly hard to find in the latest version of chrome 😞
Just out of curiousity, but how much swap do you usually get on your activity monitor. (Anyone can add in). Typically when I first restart, I get around 1GB, then the longer I keep the machine on (days) the more swap memory gets used till I eventually get close to 5GB. (The memory displayed isn't cumerlative right?) I use safari and a few socials running in the background with 10 or so tabs. My app memory usually hovers around 3GB.
Is this why my M1s battery is depleting super fast? I have the password manager LastPass and despite owning my Mac for a few days it the battery seems far behind the reported 16-20 hours.
Do you have a solution for this Created Lads? LOVE your videos.
Some really good info presented in an easy to follow format, I'll be back to apply this when I (finally!) get my hands on an M1X Macbook Pro.
And also... during working for various companies in the UK for some 40 years and dealing with many tech support people, I've never heard the word cache pronounced 'caysh' like that before. I've always heard it pronounced 'cash' here in the UK. Interesting how that differs even between the UK and Australia.
Not working for me currently. Used this video to enable on a different mac but it won't work now.
I’m late but hopefully you’ll get back though, I am looking at getting a M1 MacBook Air base model, I was wondering how easily it could edit 1080p video and render 1080p video (no codecs, it will be PS5 Fortnite clips recorded in 1080p) in Davinci Reslove 16.1 non paid. Just wondering.
For 1080p it will work fine. Get 16GB RAM if you can, but if your budget doesn't allow for it, it's not a big deal.
@@CreatedTech omg thank you so much, ALOT more content on my channel soon. I may get the 16gb upgrade but if not I’m sure 8gb will be plenty, it will be a huge upgrade from my 4gb ram, 64gb storage, and intel pentium laptop, keep the great content coming, and have a great night/morning/afternoon. Thank you.
this is really helpful with my 256gb storage, but do you have a fix for Safari though it's not writing too much on the ssd? I have made changes already for Firefox and Chrome. Thank you
We don’t have to worry if we are using Safari right ? And what about Netflix and Prime video ? Do they dotn count ?
I heard you cant install the netflix app on Macbook M1 ..
Hi, I have an M1 MacBook Air, and I’m wondering if swap memory is still an issues with MacOS Ventura ?
Hi does this mean Safari is the way to go to conserve ssd? since less data is written compared to other browser? and is it also safe to say RAM usage are almost the same as other browsers? thanks
Is it possible to change the disk cache to additional NVMe which we have added via a hub? and so we can still get better performance and still save internal mac SSD from wear.
Could you do it for safari as well.
Safari doesn't have this feature so no need to disable anything!
What type of laptop dock is that ? Does it sync with the big screen ?
Thanks for all the tips that you share all the time...i just tried to find the flag in chrome and brave...couldn't find any?? any possible solution??
hi! and what about adobe photoshop/illustrator? does it have the same issue? i saw video with older macos and not m1 optimidez adobe photoshop and it wrote like 10GB just for editing 3 raw files, what about your experience with any of those two? thank you
Are the effects still the same if u view videos in lower quality?
can we delete our information of the disk ( or whatever it is ?? )?
This feature has disappeared from Brave, Firefox went back to true. do you have any idea why?
This method doesnt work anymore in lastest chrome, any new fix?
@Created Tech Does it affect the longevity of the RAM?
please anything about the kernel task because in my MBP M1 it shows 88.74GB written and launchd 44.02GB written, please anything about it

same here...
Question: would not grow swap instead then to free ram for the browser? I'm not experienced with that stuff.
Edit: Ok, should have finished the video before commenting. :)
What is the 'lsd' running on my MAC RAM after I followed your instruction? Opera help stopped but still Opera Browser still runs 40mb up the same as before. And this 'lsd' now running 282mb way up more than opera?
Thank You!!!
Thank's, am I need to turn this off on my safari browser?
Hi, sorry if this question not about web browser, but i'm really curious about what happens on my MBP M1 8GB/512GB. Yesterday I use FCPX and I really notice that the bytes written is so huge, although I just edit small size videos. How can I minimalize the amount of bytes written when use FCPX? Is it use externall SSD into FCPX library can make the bytes written just on the external SSD? Same question, how about Photoshop or Premiere Pro?
I really need to use that program alot, but in my country no official retailers that sell 16GB version. Please help me to figuring out because I'm really new on the MacOS and so far this laptop the best I ever use.
I have resorted to shutting down my m1 air everyday now, which I feel helps a lot. Before I was averaging 50GB a day and over time slowly went up 300-400GB a day. Now that I have been shutting my laptop down nightly, the write usage rarely goes over 50GB/day. I know in another video you said that it is probably better to not shutdown your laptop often, but I feel like this is a case you should.
There's a good possibility your write usage decreased due to the recent Apple software updates, not shutting down your computer nightly. However, I have heard some people having to shut down nightly due to the excessive write issue.
Hi can u try to fix the M1 Pro cursor freeing issue. Thank you
Oh my God, Apple M chips making PC setup neater & neater!
I am not doing much (no video or photo editing), and after 3 months and 20 days of use, it's already used 46.7TB. I've started to closely monitor the usage, and the Swap Used under Activity Monitor was showing 0 MB this morning which was all good. But after being away for half an hour, and sleep kicked in, upon resume the M1 Mac, Swap Used is now 600MB!!
Looking at the KernelTask written in Disk tab, it was 150MB prior to sleep. After resume, it's written 4GB. What's going on?
I'll try not to sleep next and see.
So I bought a baseline m1 macbook air. I only use Safari. Do I have to worry about the SSD?
Even though i did the above steps its still swapping a lot ? is this due to optimisation??
heyy why does the swap and memory usage go very down after restarting the device ( i have the base mba) , i don't use chrome it takes a lot of resources but right now while using firefox all day for videos and all i am getting way less writes than before, so does restarting affect this??
one more thing , after using my machine for 1month and 26 days it dropped 2% battery health and is now at 98% is it normal?? cycle count was around 29 i guess.
will running macOS from external drive can resolve memory swap issue?
Gonna get a macbook air m1 tommorow, thanks for the tips! Hope i will se how and when to charge it.
for those who want to use for more than 10 years would not be a good buy with 8gb Ram?
There are no videos on how to run vrchst on Mac mini m1. Is it possible?
Using a safari browser then watching youtube videos is fine?
I noticed the bytes written was almost 800mb for whatssap desktop application on my m1 MacBook Pro, should I remove it? or is that not a big amount??
I see 9.13Years before it fails and now I am having peace of mind.
and that's when warranty for the part runs out. For obvious reasons they make this period much smaller than the actual average SSD life. You could get 3x or 4x that. In reality... the computer will be completely obsolete before this SSD stuff becomes an issue.
@@halfalligator6518 I don't think it's fair to label this issue as "SSD stuff". Just a few weeks ago we still had users writing several terabytes every day from just normal usage. That will absolutely destroy a 256GB SSD much quicker than normal. With a few software and app updates since then, it seems to have improved but still worthwhile to stay proactive on it.
@@CreatedTech oh it's not a good sign... just people are over-reacting a bit. I think it's mostly from non-native browsers that are doing the damage.
@@CreatedTech Correct. The SSD is the same from 2019 Mac. Certainly, it's the way how MacOS works and maybe some bugs. But at the end of the day, even if it takes 9+ years for the SSD to fail I don't think we have to worry much. Frankly I have never seen anyone holding to their laptops for more than 5 or 6 years.
@@anubhavsolankey Typing this on a 2012 Mac Mini. And beside it is my 2007 Mac Mini I'm also still putting to good use. So, this does give me pause about getting the M1 even if it isn't in a laptop.
I have been doing this for a while and no long term issues. Just have to refresh the stream if you have paused it and left a while. I also link my browser cache to a RAM Disk for super fast web page opening, I read 10x faster!
Could you please elaborate how you do this on a mac? Sounds interesting. How much difference does this do on a M1 mac, since the SSD is so quick?
@@erik.dahlberg Sorry I should have been more specific. I use it on my Intel Macs and Window's laptops. Not sure there is a way for Apple Silicon.
Just setup a new 8th gen LG Gram 15 and it was slow loading pages, but setup a RAM Drive and now much quicker.
