Hey I think I know how to save a jump when getting the star from megaleg. On the platform with him, there's a seam you can walk over that for two frames puts Luigi midair... It just might work!
How is this even a challenge? I never need to jump when I play Mario Galaxy. Most people play the game while sitting in a chair, not jumping at all. smh my head
I have to say "mindlessly struggling to get off a lilypad magically makes it levitate solving all of our problems" is not something I expected from this
"What do you mean core mechanic? I can count the number of times I did that in my playthrough. This mechanic you didn't even intend is way more vital to the game"
Also, I just finished the video and I have to say, this is history right here. Cutting off 51 jumps and finishing Mario Galaxy in only 4 JUMPS is an absolute W, you should be proud my man
“the game starts with Mario running around and jumping in a cutscene… this… doesn’t count. i didn’t tell him to do that” lol why did i get such a good kick out of that?
@HarryLLC Well TJ "Henry" Yoshi, hear me out. An A press actually has three parts to it. When A is pressed, when A is held, and when A is released. And together, this forms one complete A press. Now, usually, it's the pressing that's useful. Because that's the only part that makes Mario jump. However, sometimes it's sufficient to just use the holding part, which allows Mario to do little kicks, to swim in water, to fall slowly while twirling, and to fall slowly with the wing cap. And as for the release, well, there's currently no cases where that's useful or important, so don't worry about that part. Now, if we map out the required A presses for Wing Mario Over The Rainbow, it would look like this. We merely need to hold A to reach the canon platform, we need to press A to launch from the first canon, and we need to press A again to launch from the second canon. So, how many A presses is that total? Well, it appears to be three, and if we were doing this star in isolation, then yeah, it would be three. But, in a full game A button challenge run, there are other A presses that occur earlier in the run, such as this A press needed to get into the course. So, if we take that A press into consideration as well, then how many A presses would it take? The naive answer would be four. One to enter the course and the three within the course that we established earlier. However, we can do better. We can actually do it in three by simply holding out the first A press to be used for the half A press. Because the half A press only required A to be held, not actually pressed. So in this fashion, Wing Mario Over The Rainbow only adds on an additional two A presses to the run since the first A press just leeches off of a previous A press. So, to capture this phenomenon, we call it 2.5x A presses.
@@lr0dl012 Yeah its on the wii vc version of bowers in the fire sea its how sm64 was actually beatenwith the a button for the first time idk what their name is though
It's wild to me that half of the jumps are just for collecting grand stars and the other half are not just in the SAME level, but ALSO in the FINAL level, and not even for collecting the grand star
The lillypad really gives "Bowser in the firesea skip in Mario 64 wii version where you wait 3 days for a plateform to slowly rise due to a wrongly rounded float just to skip a jump" energy
@@LeBazarDeFusette it reminds me of the botched animation in the low% run of twilight princess where you just wait while link stares at a rupee for 16 hours.
17:20 Are you kidding me.... all the time I spent as a kid trying to get the bullet bills to hit where i needed them to and all you have to do is crouch under them?!
i heard someone say something in a mario maker video earlier that i think applies to all of these kinds of challenges. "you only lose when you give up." the current best known minimum jump count may be 4, but that's only for this moment in history. the amount of times i've seen people say (and personally tell people) that something is impossible, only to see it be completed is too much to not think a human will ultimately reach it's goal no matter what.
@@erierierierierie Given that we can just walk off a crystal and suddenly gain height, I'm sure that there's *something* we can discover for the final jumps

From what I can tell, that weird slide-spin you used to get height in mostly flat areas is likely doing this: Collision and state jank. There's usually a slight difference in hitboxes and character controllers. One of these is likely responsible for setting the grounded state for jumps, and the other for movement. So, while this normally works as expected, if you match the point right in between the grounded state where the spin jump height-gain is reset but haven't yet lost your air movement you get to keep the backwards-momentum speed + get bonus height from a spin that normally shouldn't work!
