In this video we attempt to travel from Auroville in Tamil Nadu, South India, to Thanjavur. It was one hell of a road trip, and we meet some interesting people, and have some interesting situations along the way - leave your comfort zone at home #TamilNadu #Thanjavur
If you like our India travel series, please subscribe to our channel here / thosehappydays
Our overall plan in India is to travel via rickshaw/tuk tuk from the South to North (if it's possible?) The next leg of our journey is to travel from Trichy to Madurai, and then (if our rickshaw makes it) travel all the way to Kanyakumari. Once we make it that far south, we will start heading north through Kerala.
WE POST VIDEOS EVERY WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY 8PM AND SUNDAY 9AM (British Time
We have only just arrived in India, after a crazy time back home doing van life and living full time in our camper van for two years in the UK. But after some serious engine problems that cost us a fortune, we came to India on a mission to honour Liam's Grandad's legacy who sadly died earlier this year. With the inheritance money Liam got from that, we bought the tuk tuk and named it after Liam's Grandad.
    OUR JACKERY POWERBANK
We are in fact travelling with a Jackery Explorer 1000 and we LOVE IT! Does what we need. But Jackery have just brought out the NEW Jackery Solar Generator 1500 Pro - which is more powerful and it's quicker charging too. Here are the links to check it out:

Please be alert and don't drive that rickshaw above 50. I'm from india and i own a rickshaw. It's "Piaggio Ape". It's a bigger rickshaw, lot of luggage space, much more stable but it's very noisy. This rickshaw you drive has stability issues. If you do quick movements with handles, then this will flip over. It's a very common accident especially in mountainous roads. If you are driving this thing in Kerala, then be extremely cautious.
Edit : While eating with hands, if you don't use index finger or small finger, then it's easy.

The Brihadeshwara Temple or Big Temple in Thanjavur is one of the many Must Visit sites of India. Imagine putting a minaret of 25tonnes on top of 80tonnes of single granite stone that too more than 1000 years back. Unparalleled architecture! It's a UNESCO World Heritage site.

I always believe that Westerners have never truly traveled until they've been to a destination such as India. I've been 3x over 20 years ago and can still remember details of those amazing journeys, all different and unique! Liam, you have nerves of steel driving a tuc-tuc in that traffic, but you two are in the midst of a trip of a lifetime (largely due to your means of transport). These India videos are classic and thank you so much for producing them! Just the colors of the saris have me enthralled. I do pray for your safety and know that the generosity of the Indian people is much due to your warm, happy and smiling spirits. Your happiness makes others feel happy! So glad to see your appreciation of a totally foreign culture without any prejudice. A common pub discussion in caucasian society is "Poverty, Hunger in India" and my simple answer is, Throughout India, if you find people eating, the first thing they do is to offer food instead of hiding their plates.
Show me one place where they serve free food and bless you for eating at their place.

Hey Liam and Janine , I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying your journey and happy to see the unique travel experience that you guys are bringing it your content. Since your guys have started your journey in my state its even more special. so here are the few things that I noticed and thought might help you understand things better.
    1) The temple which you visited is not actually a temple but an madam, which is run by the disciples & followers of Ramalinga Vallalar (வள்ளல் or vallal in tamil means
philanthropist or charitable person. His title literally means as a generous person) . He started this movement where he set out to feed anyone and everyone who visits their madam regardless of their wealth of belief with a hungry stomach about 150 years ago . Which is continued by their followers with the help from volunteers even to this day .
    2) At the petrol bunk the pump attended asked you if you want to fill your can with 5 litres of petrol or for Rs. 500, since the petrol costs Rs 102.63 people tent to fill up their tanks by mentioning the Rs as like fill for Rs 500 or Rs 1000 so as to avoid the hassle of tendering the exact change especially when the mode of payment is cash. So I would suggest you to get the petrol in terms of litre since you have to keep track of oil mix per litre.

Excellent video. Glad that you visited 1100 years old Thanjavur Big temple, an Architectural and Engineering marvel. No one knows clearly how this granite stone temple was built (within 7 years) with a height of 63 mts with hollow inside from 50th meter onwards . No mortar was used between the interlocking stones. Standing today majestically not affected by any natural disaster. I would rate this as the top wonder of ancient architecture in India.

Hello to you both. Just discovered your channel yesterday and am hooked. I live in Mumbai, India. Yes, people in India are not as well off financially, however, Indians can be caring, hospitable and generous...I mean the poor and middle class and not those who live in their multi billion dollar glasshouses. But thank God for the kind ones. I love the music you use in your videos. Take care and be safe.

Isn’t it amazing how the people with nothing are the most generous. I grew up in North West England where there’s a saying “They’d give you their last penny” and that’s clearly very true of Indian folk.

Barbara yes it's so literal in India they actually would give u their last penny ohhh bless them. ❤️ I did solo travel vlogging in India and I felt safe as the locals looked after me. They always paid for my tea and samosa whilst I was on the road and they didn't want anything from me. I was soooooo lucky to have the experiences that I had ❤️ I struggled if I stayed in the same place for too long as that's when corruption towards tourists can be torturing but travellers are safer if they are on the road backpacking (in my experience) ❤️

Just let you know , You said In India Most common language is English and Hindi. But When you take South India every state has seperate Native language and they also speak English.(Eg.Tamilnadu - Tamil and English , Kerala - Malayalam and English, karanataka - kannada and English) In south India some of them only know Hindi .so when you travel around you You need to know their state language or else English.

Ohhhhh Liam the final scene of u holding that lil baby immediately after Janine spoke about the temple. It really did draw me back to India. I felt the energies in that temple which shows what AMAZING vloggers u and Janine are ❤️ I love your balanced view. Re you express the altruism of some of the people. They provide us with a depth of nurturing, yet sometimes others can tell us wrong things and the roads are incredibly dangerous. I felt as tho I was in heaven and hell at the same time during my travels there.
Soooo glad to hear about the yoga. Yup sitting in a tuc tuc all day with a high level of concentration and the movement is enough to throw anyone out of balance so yoga will certainly ground you both.
Well done on your hindi speaking 😀👍

don't want to brag but that orange sweet you ate is called "Jangiree". Jelabi is a bit different where they ferment the mix overnight before deep frying and soaking it in sugar syrup. It has the sweet fermented taste and is best served hot, on the other hand Jangiree is right after the mix, they deep fry it and then let it cool down, then they put the deep fried jangiree into the hot syrup and made it cool downed, best served when it's in normal or slightly cold temperature. It can be tough learning the differences tbh 😅😅

Fantastic videos guys. I spent some time in India and am really impressed with your approach to seeing the country. Please, please be careful on the highways - an accident there will be serious in your Rickshaw. We travelled from Agra to New Delhi and had to do it at night. Really scary. Also, when driving, 2 stroke engines need fuel to lubricate the piston so don’t keep the throttle closed for long periods of time with it in gear as you can seize the engine. Good luck and stay safe!

09:20 That building is a part of a great philosophy. The writings on the building say, " Every living being should live a life of happiness" and followed by the mantra meaning "The great blessing and The uniquely great mercy". These are quotes of Vallalar.
Vallalar, also known as Sri Ramalinga Swamigal or Vallalar Swamigal, was a 19th century Indian philosopher, saint, poet, and social reformer. He was born in 1823 in the town of Marudur near Chennai, in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Vallalar is best known for his teachings on self-realization, social equality, and service to humanity. He founded the "Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Sathiya Sangam" (Society for the Pure Doctrine of Universal Oneness), which aimed to promote the unity of all religions and caste equality.
He is also known for his spiritual poems collectively known as "Thiru Arutpa" or "The Divine Song," which contain his teachings on self-realization and his experiences of the divine.
Vallalar passed away in 1874, but his teachings continue to inspire and influence people in India and beyond. He is revered by many as a saint and a spiritual leader.
