- Foreigners Travel To India and experience their first Pongal Festival in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu
Pongal is like New Year for Tamil people, but we believe a lot of India celebrate some form of harvest festival in different ways. We assume as we travel more of India then we will see a lot more festivals, but this one was fanstastic.

Our overall plan in India is to travel via rickshaw/tuk tuk from the South to North (if it's possible?) The next leg of our journey is to travel from Kanyakumari to Kerala, and the epic journey north starts.

We have only just arrived in India, after a crazy time back home doing van life and living full time in our camper van conversion for two years in the UK. But after some serious engine problems that cost us a fortune, we came to India on a mission to honour Liam's Grandad's legacy who sadly died earlier this year. With the inheritance money Liam got from that, we bought the tuk tuk and named it after Liam's Grandad.

Being an Indian I'm fascinated at this video. We celebrate Sankranti in Andhra State similar to Pongal but I never seen how Tamilians do it. Thanks for showing my own country to me 🇮🇳❤️
Its harvest festival also celebrated in odisha and punjab under different names.

This month is known as Thai month and the people of Tamil Nadu, strongly believe that this month brings positive change in their lives and they get rid of their problems. This is the season when crops like sugarcane, turmeric and rice are being harvested. It is believed that this month is considered to be auspicious for marriages, engagements and all religious and spiritual activities.

By the way, you may have indian food outlets nearby, though they may not carry the authentic taste and values like made in india. But thats okay. You can give it a shot. Every indian state has unique and devinely tasty food to offer!

Shelia the Pongal was SUPERB wasn't it. I lived in India for 3 years and the festivals excited me soooooooo MUCH. After a good while I did avoid them tho as the crowds and smoke in the unshaded sun did get to me.

Yes Gary ABSOLUTELY. I know alot of people who go to India for the beach and pool and basically that's all they see. Liam and Janine are having a pure lived experience due to the fact that they are immersing themselves into the culture. I travelled on my own in India for 3 years and similar to Liam and Janine I also immersed myself into the culture. I am a slow travel vlogger so I took my time and lived with local families, saw their cooking, ate their food etc. I LOVE LOVE LOVE to explore cultural depth ❤️

Great to see your travel experiences in India 😊. Madurai is one of my favourite places to visit. Meenakshi Amman temple, nayakar mahal are a treat to visit. And I love the food there. Kari dosai, mutton chukka, murugan idli shop, jigarthanda, aira meen, kola urundai and the list goes on. Have fun guys 🤩

We were hoping to meet up with you both in Kerala, but unfortunately our three weeks are coming to an end. It’s been our first visit since 2017, when we came to Kerala for our Indian daughters wedding. We have now met our Indian grandson who is now four and a half. It’s always great watching you both, and great to see you embracing the wonderful people and the amazing diverse culture. Our trip has been fantastic as usual, big disappointment we didn’t get to meet up with you in Kerala, we are in Alleppey until Sunday, then flying from Kochi to Delhi and Delhi back to London. Diana I agree. The Indian people are lovely aren't they ❤️ I did a 3 year solo travel stint in India and I got alot of help from the locals whilst traveling on long distance trains and busses. Still, I needed to be alert but fortunately I found lots of nice people there ❤️

Just wow. You're having an amazing experience that you'll definitely never forget. Do appreciate what you're going through as traveled twice to India. 6 months Northern part on a bought local motorbike. Second trip for 1 month in Kerala. Absolutely miss incredible India so much. Hope you find time to rest. Really important too. It's a hard task you've set yourselves.
You probably do but please 🙏 write reviews for the local accommodation because it's the support they need and any local businesses that you rate. But also reviews for a bad/terrible places especially if you see child labour etc (children used for cleaning rooms etc)

I was lucky enough to be paid to see a lot of our world whilst serving in the Royal Navy but never got to India or see the sights you are seeing. So envious of you both. By the time you are my age (63), imagine the memories you'll share with your children and grandchildren. I'm already looking forward to the next episode. I was 3rd , Janine take care , see a clinic if necessary . You will get a shock between Goan and other comparable prices. There are over 200 eateries in Goa the majority in Titos Lane. I am interested in buying Pete dead or alive for my Goan Sponsor Son Santosh , raised in El Shaddai Children’s Home , you must visit and they will sing to you. I put him through his Taxi drivers Licence . So he would love Pete .
