- Foreigners travel to India to visit Pondicherry (Tamil Nadu) on New Year's Eve 2023 - good idea or really bad idea? As our auto rickshaw travels in india continue
Pondicherry, also known as Puducherry, also known as Pondi, is a french collonial town in India, which is crazy enough...as it looks like Paris. But on for new years eve it was doubly crazy #Pondicherry #IndiaTravel
We hope you enjoy our India travel vlogs from a foreigner perspective, please subscribe here / thosehappydays to be notified when we publish our next video
WE POST EVERY WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY 8PM AND SUNDAY 9AM (British Time)
THE FULL STORY SO FAR
We are a married British couple who have lived in a camper van conversion, travelling the UK full time for the last two years. But after some big trouble with our campervan over winter, we decided we needed a break and headed to Incredible India on a new adventure
THE STORY CONTINUES
In India we bought an auto rickshaw using some inheritance money from Liam's Grandad when he sadly passed away. We bought the Rickshaw in Chennai, Tamil Nadu second hand. We then got it painted, and quicly learnt how to drive a tuk tuk haha. We now plan to travel as much of India as possible over the next few months - if it's possible.

Now this is what I call truly exploring India, Tired of seeing Foreigners heading off to Crowded Cities like Delhi and Mumbai and thinking this is what India is all about.. The Real Soul India can be found in Villages and Small Towns, Not the Big Cities.
Thank you! We are looking forward to seeing stuff that only self driving will bring our way 🙌
Indeed....becoz more than 60% of India still lives in Rural regions...
@Indian Patriot good
@@indianpatriot4494 It takes a leader who has a view apart from religion and caste and UPs current leader is an extremist, we hope UP will be another normal state and not a failed state like Bihar , all the best ...
@Ri1 yes south india is relatively more educated but been living in south india almost for 10 years now i cant say its more clean as everywhere there is rubbish. if you visit cities like indore ,nagpur, pune, surat, udaipur these cities are more clean than south.
We tamil people are proud of our hospitality and we wanna welcome people like you with open arms. Good luck with the trip. Love from LA.
Thank you so much
India is an amazing country, full of some of the most genuinely friendly people I have every met and in my opinion the quality, diversity and value of the food is unbeaten the world over. After 2 months in India I returned to England substantially fatter than when I left.
India is like LSD in that most people should do it at least once in their lives.
Haha great analogy
I wonder why this channel doesn't have million views?, this is the best travel content I have ever seen in India by a foreigner
India looks amazing! It was funny when you were talking into the camera and behind you all those people were taking photos in Pete! 😆. The people look sooo friendly, and in that cafe where they treated you like royalty.Your channel is fantastic, you deserve way more subscribers than you have, I've been binge watching them all over Christmas and boring New Year so thanks for that and cheering me up! xx
Christine I did solo travel in India for 3 years. Alot of the people in India r DELIGHTFUL but I still had to be weary of some characters!!!!
Ah thank you, that's our pleasure. Really appreciate you following the journey
India is actually the largest consumer of Whisky in the world...not many know this 😁
I'm an omnivore but have to say some of those vegetarian dishes looked very palatable 👍
After events of last year it's so lovely to see you guys start the New Year with so many smiles.....someone is smiling down on you knowing you spent that inheritance exactly as he would have wanted you to ❤
Ah no way, didn't know that
@@ThoseHappyDays You would also be surprised to know that India is the world's third largest producer of Instant noodles and the third largest automobile market. The British companies Landrover and Jaguar are owned by Tata Motors. Also India is the second largest producer of Smartphones. In Indian markets only 20% of the goods are made in China.
When it comes to drinking, Kerala has Toddy and the drinking capacity of Malayalees is 80% of Russia. Goa has Feni and Cabo.
There are some amazing whiskeys in India like Amrut single malt and Paul John Nirvana. Even the wine scene has improved dramatically with Sula and Fratelli producing world class wines. Sula wines is headed by a Swedish woman called Cecila Oldne and Fratelli is run by a group of Indians and Italians. Except Hindi heartland and Gujarat rest of India is open to alcohol.
There's more Scotch drunk here than Scotland ever distilled.
So enjoyable to watch! India is such a fascinating country , thanks guys! Keep safe xx
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’re inspiring me to visit India!
You should!
Most welcome
I've been wanting to travel India and SEA since I was 18 but never had the chance. I'm 47 now and none of my mates want to with me, even though I'm still up for it. I'm so glad you enjoyed yourselves. It looks flippin amazing, especially the food and friendly people. It's given me the push to either do it alone or meet and grab someone to help me along the way.
Go on your own. It's safe. I went solo aged 40, blond lady. Was the best time of my life. I bought a train ticket (2AC class sleeper train) from a UK agent, plus Paying Guest (B&B staying in private homes). It was wonderful!
@@heather333 Are you sure you visited India??? Most unsafe country for women in the world. You don't know about India at all. Cows are more safe than women here in India.
I did solo travelling around India for 3 years. Om sure u will love it Darren
Heather i also did solo travel in India. 😀 I did it for 3 years. It was scary at times but my favourite part was the trains for sure 😀
Get yourself to Goa, you will love it
Pondicherry looks fascinating! I know very little about India but I never would have imagined a French colonial town hidden in there! Amazing... and what a way to spend NYE! Happy New Year from Australia!
Thank you, happy new year
There's one more tucked away a few miles north of Calcutta, not so steeped in French ways, and three more little dots in Kerala (Mahe), Tamil Nadu (Karaikal) and Andhra Pradesh (Yanam). None as good to visit, or to stay, as Pondicherry.
The whole of the south west and south of Pondicherry is fabulous visiting country; anywhere you land up is likely to be a lifetime visit.
It is fascinating I live here and feel so blessed to be, surrounded by its magic
India is very special - Pondicherry is unique and so happy to live here now after leaving Australia
There are so many major cities with powerful colonial history and flavor.
Madras, Bangalore, Goa Mangalore, Mumbai, Calcutta, which also has China Town in it.
Cochin, Kerala has Jewish people, Synagogue, as well as colonial history.
Added NYE in Pondicherry to my bucket list! What a great experience love Indian culture & people so friendly
Haha you must, such fun
Snap.
Realy enjoying your India 🇮🇳 videos .went to goa 40 years ago with my wife. The most eye-opening experience and amazing holiday .just loving your journey around India 🇮🇳 x
That's awesome! Thank you
You welcome
Blasting through India in a tuk tuk with 20L of petrol in the back haha. I love how you went from engine blown up, cold UK weather... to INDIA. That's brilliant stuff. Happy new year :)
Haha might as well 😅
You two seem much more in your comfort zone and happy there and it's much more of a community and friendly. I'm glad that you found a warm climate as well Janine ❤️🙏👍
I was thinking that too, how much more it’s their place compared to Europe and Germany. India suits you ! I am really really enjoying these Vlogs, so how long were you hoping to stay in India ?
Have to admit, it's lovely being in a place where people are so kind. Community is everything ❤️
@@ThoseHappyDays yes I think you learn that when you live in a camper and I was thinking that when I watched it for you both. I wonder what the way forward is to combine the two. It seems to bother quite a few camping folks. Look forward to the next episode 👍
As an aside lol dreamt this morning that I met you both and I bought you something from Asda as you were staying in a hotel nearby a bit random 😂

Yes. Brilliant vlog. Really enjoyed watching it.
Brilliant vlog the 2 of you,I was very nervous for you when I knew you were in India because of food poisoning and the mental roads but after seing this it looks a friendly, vibrant place.Keep safe and look after each other over there(I know you will)Have a great remainder of your time and stay happy.👍❤️❤️
Yeah just behind you as you were filming, so maybe didn’t know it was yours. Think they Very impressed with Pete , me too . 👌👍❤️
Also I loved the part where Liam was talking about the crowds around Pete and while he was talking about it 2 woman walked upto Pete, sat in it and took a picture. Liam was vlogging so would not have noticed haha.... Brilliant
🤣🤣🤩
Guys I absolutely love India, for the past 20 years I’ve travelled the length and breadth …Indians as you rightly say are the most fun loving people to walk this earth …the vast plains of the country inspire you and amaze you at every turn
To purchase a TUK TUK Liam with your Grandads inheritance is an awesome way to have a great time …he’ll be following you with a massive smile
The best thing about these Indian Vlogs is you took an opportunity to turn a grey negative situation into something magical
Aww can’t wait for these Vlogs I’m in awe of you both ❤
Ros these vlogs are Amazing aren't they. I was challenged like hell when I travelled alone in India but at the same time i have an addiction to it. I think many people are like that 😀

Hi the thing I loved about India was the food especially a fellow vegetarian try eating with a roti and your hands it really is great a tad messy but very humbling, if you get invited to a wedding definitely go, I found the Indian culture very kind and generous people happy 2023 to you both I’m enjoying and travelling along with you xx
We are being total "yes people" in India, so if we get invited to a wedding we will go
Just a small correction, if I may: 'Indian' is a nationality, not a culture. India is a country and a nation that is made up of many different cultures with many different languages belonging to 4 language families, the main ones being the Indo-European and the Dravidian.
We were there a few years ago and had a fab time. Indian people are just so friendly .Make sure you travel to Tamal Nadu and you will see a huge contrast in both culture and way of life.Enjoy your travels it's a wonderful country.
Ltte terrorist supporters are Tamil nadu people are. You don't know about Tamil terrorists ltte
Currently in Tamil Nadu 🙏
Lot of foreigners are in pondicherry and some of them are settled in pondicherry. That's pretty cool to welcome foreigners to our wonderful place 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 ❤️❤️ enjoy and have a safe journey. 🙌🙌
Thank you for sharing your wonderful adventure, loving it. India would be somewhere I would love to go to visit, sadly chronic anxiety would never allow me to go but I am really enjoying the journey through your vlog. I am sat here with a huge grin on my face, fabulous. Of course it is not the first time I actually feel as though I am there. Keep safe and wishing you both a healthy and prosperous 2023.
💚💚💚
The Indians are the kindest, most generous people. They are also very inquisitive!
Don't believe everything on internet
@@AjaySingh-pr3pb yeah don't but that doesn't mean he or she is wrong, except some north indians all indians are very kind and generous people.
You both look so happy and calm, especially Janine! And Pondicherry was an excellent choice for one of your first destinations. The colors! are magnificent, and I'm so in love with the colors and beautiful fabrics of the saris. You won't find better vegetarian food than in India, too. The traditions are still alive, as the men and women clearly dance separately at these venues. My favorite was Liam dancing in the street with his older dance partner! Pete would have loved it! We all needed this trip with you this time of year. Thank you so much; eager to watch next week (Sun).
Thank you, haha that older guy was a security guard next door who had a little ghetto blaster in the street just waiting for someone to dance with
Hahaha! Matching costumes, yet!
Actually, kind of, genders are not separated by law, couples do dance together, but male and female groups will not interact very freely
Hi there first of all you guys have a very unique way to express not too cheesy or overreacting like some other vloggers.
There's a compliment for whoever is doing the camera work like you guyz just drop montage after montage after montage with a very perfect angle & timing in a single video. Wish you guys a very good luck for your coming days✨😉
Thank you so much 😁
Incredible India & people. A new year to remember 2023 💗💙🥂🍾 🎼🛺🎉😊

This was so good. India people look very friendly there. Thank both 💕💕😊🙏🏻
When I was travelling solo in India I was a bit weary of people as I was a woman alone. But you rightly pointed out that many people there are v nice and friendly. The locals love the camera don't they 😀
Why is it that despite your trails and tribulation's I am always having a smile on my face and a warm feeling within my heart every-time I watch your Vlogs💕 thank you for letting us be apart of your journey xx

Mad how they have so much French culture ....lovely place my thoughts of India have changed
🛺🎉
Were your thoughts earlier were biased from western media?
@@amoebicdysentery5846 not really biased media why think that? Its not meant in a negitive way its just i dont think we actually get to see a lot about india properly ....A combination of your country not promoting it properly and the west only talking and showing the slums bit or the more popular tourist bits like the Taj or Goa etc and we see Deli and not a lot of these other interesting places ...its a big place and this couple are visiting places i have never heard of or knew existed. Same with any country though you for example hear about UK & London ...but have you ever heard of York, Bath or Cambridge or the Lakes or Kirkcudrbight Pitlochery or Arran or Monmouth ...the major places get the most promotion/coverage in any country on the national media as thats basically thats where the national media are mainly based. This couple travel to some unusual lovely places all over the place that the ordinary media dont go to or cover much in different countries and thats why I like their channel and other van lifers channels because its something they all do....to them life is an adventure and for living and they do it to the full and if I had someone to do it with I would do it too. So its nothing biased by the West because all countries are the same on this point really.
@@byromtaylor6482 great reply and perspective but don't you think that western media only shows what goes wrong in India and never covers the real major transformation India is going through since 4-5 years. I don't know why but foreigners visiting here cover India based on golden triangle/quadrilateral (delhi+jaipur+agra) which is not even 1% of India. Indians don't take pride in taj mahal at all, we have some most ancient temples n other monuments here which dates back to the starting of human civilisation, some of them are in Tamil Nadu state and as currently this couple vloggers are in this state only so i hope they'll cover it and let you all see through their lens. And you know you won't believe foreigners coming to India love to see slum areas that's why there are even package tours for the same. Like when we talk about Mumbai west thinks major section of it is slum but only around 2 percent is that and it's one of the most high tech slum where everyone is doing something and well employed, Nvm i would love foreigners to visit India, I want them to explore things which gives them life changing experience.
And i know about lakes, Cambridge and York, I've been to 2 of them earlier. Cambridge is famous i guess.
@@amoebicdysentery5846 Yes I agree somewhat but all media is badly orchestred these days buddy - but since covid n wars and nonsense a very high pc of people have woken up to the media nonsense/biased reporting etc and many dont take main stream media at face value anymore...the clever ones judge and think for ourselves just like you clearly do. I am glad you see my point but I hope it aint a intentinal thing on the media in the west... As I said our own country does not promote areas outside of London or the major cities nowhere near enough as it should - its like London is a sepearte country to the rest ok UK sometimes. And nor does your country cover itself properly...so you cant blame our media in the west for not covering your country properly if they (your government) dont even do it for these areas. So in that much respect goes to these van lifers and vloggers for opening up reporting on stuff I may never have got to see... Its a interesting point we are making actually There was one cafe for eg that took pics and gave her a scarf and they are welcomed everywhere and they dont quite understand why....its because tourists are not as common place as they should be These places would gain many more torists and visitors and investors if we heard about them in the West for sure...I blame media and tourism promotion and governments worldwide for doing this to their own. Maybe the governments should give grants for these heritage sites and areas to promote themselves because they are clearly being let down and we are all losing out not ever knowing about them or seeing them..
Loved this video (and the french misspellings on signage 😊). Definitely want to visit one day.
Love from Tokyo.

Liam you are so attentive to Janine what an incredible marriage of two special people who show us all that life is truly a journey. I love the spice meter you put up with the food. Oh so sweet in the Jaggis Cafe those gorgeous shawls. What a lovely memory. I travel so much while in the Army and still. I find that when you are in other countries soak up the culture and the return is the appreciation like was displayed from the folks at Jaggis Cafe. I traveled as a child with a huge family of 12 to include myself and parents. My parents embraced every opportunity for us to mingle with the local places and never let the language block your experience. Smiles are beautiful. Cheers.
You were/are a proper traveller 💖
Thank you for covering our place!! Pondicherry is a beautiful place to live and the price is much cheaper compared to the other tourist places. Thanks for making this video! ❤️
love that you visited small towns instead of big cities like delhi mumbai etc these places are chaotic even for indians so i cant imagine what it would be like as a foreigner
I loved Pondicherry: the sacred folk, the food, the promenade, the fishers just out of town etc. Liam, you are in your element and I imagine this is not your edge but it is Janine's edge and I am in awe of her courage and openess. Wow
