- ◼︎During this exhilarating street food adventure in the vibrant Aluth Kade area of Colombo, Sri Lanka, my objective was to immerse myself in the local culinary scene and forge connections with the community. As I traversed the bustling streets, my senses heightened by the aromas of sizzling delicacies, I was drawn to a particular stall that piqued my curiosity.
Approaching the stall, I was met with a man whose demeanor exuded hostility, later revealed to be the manager. Despite his unfriendly disposition, I engaged him in conversation about the array of food offerings. However, when he disclosed the prices, I couldn't shake off a nagging suspicion that I was being overcharged. In a bid to clarify, I sought confirmation from the cook regarding the actual cost.
To my dismay, this seemingly innocent inquiry provoked the manager's ire, leading to a terse exchange and an ultimatum to vacate the premises. Feeling unfairly treated, I couldn't help but question the ethics behind his reaction. In my view, seeking transparency in pricing shouldn't warrant such hostility. If I was wrong, I do apologize.

You want them to feel safe and comfortable, not like they're being scammed. A simple written-down price list that could be pointed to would have accomplished this, or even just explaining with patience and understanding to your foreign customers who don't speak the language would have been enough. Every country benefits from tourism, and with poor customer service and unpleasant experiences, it hurts the business and, in some cases, the country.

I’m srilankan, I got scammed in Kandy temple. The flower sellers thought I was an Indian or Pakistani, and started saying in Sinhala to increase the price. When I asked them in proper Sinhala, why do you want to increase the price, the man was shocked. Srilanka is a great place, and people are very welcoming and nice. My friend and I visited Sri Lanka recently and were impressed by the greeneries, nice and clean beaches and hospitality of the country. However, we had a scary experience with a drunk tuktuk driver who harassed us while we were trying to buy snacks. Despite our attempts to politely decline his assistance, he persisted and even tried to touch me. We had to threaten to call the police before he finally left us alone. It was a disturbing incident, but we still enjoyed our time in Sri Lanka and hope that measures are put in place to ensure the safety of all tourists.
