Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are the “real deal” when it comes to honest and valuable medical advice! I appreciate that you explain things in easy-to-understand terms, so that I can make better choices in keeping my blood sugar levels in the normal range now, instead of where they were in the pre-diabetic range!
I am diabetic and I was in the store and saw Jelly Belly's sugar free jelly beans. I was excited and bought a small bag and that evening I ate 3 or 4 of them. I didn't eat more as I didn't like them. That night I started having loud gut sounds and towards morning I started having violent diarrhea. Later that day I was concerned that I had gotten C-Difficil again ( I had this five times) The next morning I went to my VA hospital for a C-Diff test and they took blood and feces samples. They came to me and told me I had to be admitted immediately as both of my kidneys had shut down and I was in renal failure and in danger of losing my kidneys. I spent almost a week there and I told the doc that I suspected the jelly beans as I had read a small warning (after I ate them) warning that they might cause severe diarrhea. They read up on Maltitol and agreed. I was discharged 5 days later and highly recommend against eating anything with Maltitol.
I used the sweetner Equal for years. During those years, I had several migraines every month. A man asked me if I used Equal, and I said yes. He said I needed to stop ingesting that poison, and my headaches would go away. He was right!! It's been 16 years since I stopped using Equal, and I've not had one headache!!!
Earlier this year I got some Hersheys sugar free dark chocolate. It is sweetened with sugar alcohols and was delicious. About an hour later I began to have cramps that intensified and lasted for about 12 hours. I thought I was going to die. As a side effect also, my bilirubin want sky high. From now on, I'll be avoiding even small amounts of this candy.
Saccharine? Metallic taste? No, It’s BITTER! My mother used to use it. She died of cancer in 2009. I’m not necessarily drawing conclusions; I leave that up to you.
I am diabetic and tried using aspertame or the newer version neotame, but I found that it gave me migraine headaches. I did not get the same reaction with other sweeteners like sucralose, stevia,or monk fruit. I have been using sucralose for the most part but am switching over to a newer sweetener whuch is a combination of monk fruit, stevia, and ethrytol. It isn't as sweet as sucralose but has a good flavor. I am surprised you didn't cover monk fruit in your review.
I love it when someone makes sense. I am one of the people that Splenda and other sweeteners do not raise my blood sugar. I wear a Free Style Libre, so I absolutely know. I was diagnosed with severe hypoglycemia at the age of nine. I have used artificial sweeteners all my life. It is miserable to have your blood sugar crash down to 35 and below. My husband is diabetic. Splenda raises his blood sugar. The study with some people being affected and others not makes perfect sense to me.
The Libre doesn't always work. Do a finger stick and see if it matches? A doctor friend said it was not accurate, so I tried it. It was off every time.
Dr I have been maintaining my sugar levels without reg meds mostly by natural products. But I was drinking the flavoured water that has aspartame. And now my sugar has gone crazy. I am running high numbers after drinking coffee with stevia
I noticed that you didn't mention Monkfruit in your video. It's my favorite sweetener and has no effect on my blood sugar. Oh and that erythritol has a cooling almost numbing effect if used by itself.
THAT is up to you. He told you the facts if each. There is no objectively best option, because every human is different. If you want the best way to figure it out for you. Then get you a glucose tester, try a few and see how you personally react. Then choose the one you like best that doesn't spike your glucose, make you feel bad, upset your stomach, etc(most won't do any of those things to most people).
It’s great to know your serious about medicine but able to show a human being side with everyday day words of reality. Great video as always!!! ❤️ love your shirt!!!
I always wondered about whether xylitol would have an effect gut bacteria, since one of the reasons it is put into gum and mints is that it interrupts replication of mouth bacteria. 🤷♀️ I stopped using it because it’s toxic to dogs and they share all my food 😋 By the way, you’re pretty funny. I always smile while watching your vids
Every single sweetener mentioned here, other than real sugar, has an obvious bad taste to me. I knew that aspartame was trouble back in the 80s when I felt the hypoglycemic “crash” after drinking diet soda on an empty stomach. Fortunately, I am neither overweight nor diabetic, but I try to be healthy and am limiting sugar for that reason. There is only one low-calorie sugar substitute that tastes good to my sensitive palate: Allulose. I don’t drink sweetened drinks anyway, but for homemade ice cream and other treats, allulose is a godsend.

I am severely allergic to Aspartame “Nutrasweet”. I was hospitalized 3 times before we figured out what was causing my symptoms. I have to read labels on everything. I can’t even buy a stick of gum. As a diabetic I don’t usually use diet products but do enjoy a soda with Stevia a couple times a week.
I never went to the hospital, but aspartame reliably gives me a blinding headache. I'm not sure any of the other sweeteners are good for me, but the only symptom I've noticed from any other sweeteners is a laxative effect from sorbitol and xylitol. I'm sure that aspartame is worse for me than any of the other sweeteners, since it makes me feel like I'm about to die within 15 minutes of the first sip. Something that metabolizes into methanol and formaldehyde can't possibly be good for anyone, but I know plenty of people who can consume it and not get the headache. But I know a lot of people who also get headaches from it.
Sorry to hear that. Aspartame is toxic poison yet tbe FDA approved it anyway. It's still on the shelves as a safe food product. The FDA is a corrupt institution. They lie all the time.
Doc. What about other alternate sweetener products in the market? Most are blends but key sweeteners are allulose and monk fruit extract? Info and claims are there no effects on insulin. Either of these can be found blended with erythritol as well.
Just purchased your book and can't wait to get it! Just was diagnosed pre-diabetic and I am so scared. Your videos have helped tremendously! Thanks you!
Doc, saying all that as a Diabetic, I would think having a cup of tea with a splenda packet is MUCH better than having that cup of tea with a packet of sugar.
Very interesting presentation. I would really appreciate it if you could provide the links to the studies you refereed to, especially the studies regarding changes in gut bacteria and increases in blood sugar. I would like to know more on this topic. Thank you for the information! Cheers
i get SO overwhelmed with this... I just read on WEB MD that erythritol causes strokes.. How do we EVER decipher all this? I think for me it's moderation with all of them for now??
I mix 4 ounces of Xylitol with 3 ounces of Erythritol and one half teaspoon of Stevia..... Mix really well and use like real sugar with absolutely no aftertaste...
For me, one quarter packet of Sweet n Low neutralizes the alkaloids in coffee that make it bitter. Thus it also reduces any aggravation of the stomach.
But one resent study shows that erythritol is closely associated with risk for major adverse cardiovascular events. People who have high blood levels of erythritol are more prone to heart attacks, strokes and even death.
What about using swerve when baking..? Cuz I know this lady that makes peanut butter cookies and she uses almond flour and swerve and supposedly it's a good option for diabetics to have a cookie or two not everyday...
Thank you Dr.for this video previously and I wanted to test myself with Sucralose and Stevia. The ingredients in the Sucralose:Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Sucralose 1.5%. I used 5 sachets one hour before before breaking the fast. I checked with 3 different meters: freestyle, Acuckeck instant, contour plus. My blood sugar didn't even move by one point. Still I was doubtful I tested on another fasting day. Same. However I am wary about any changes to gut bacteria. I only use one or two tablets per day. I don't eat any bakery product's-sweetened or unswtened. Thank you for this video. It is better to be cautious.
Thanks Dr. Ergin. I had a drink yesterday with sucralose in it. Then with my dinner I had the same drink. Last night I felt angry and emotional. I checked my sugar and it was 166 in one finger and 170 on the other. My sugar daily usually goes no higher than 110 or 120 after dinner. I guess sucralose does not agree with me. Thanks for sharing this video. Plus, I notice Stevia and monk fruit are fine for me. God Bless you and Happy New Year❤

Greetings I've used monk fruit/erythritol for years. But recently read a health study is out on erythritol and concluded it caused red blood cell problems. Please let us know any updates on this research. Thank you😊
Thank you for this very informative video. I have cut way down on my sweeteners Monk fruit which is mainly Erythritol and use a third of what the recipe usually calls for and for muffins I sweeten them with berries or frozen raspberries picked in the summer.. much better than sweeteners. Very good show.
I am an Australian Type 2 Diabetic and have been for 25 years. I was very interested in your talk on bread. I have been to the US a number of times include 1 time for a year. I found just about all the bread there very very sweet. Other people have agreed. Is you opinion about bread true for other countries?
What about monk fruit sweeter It is my understanding that it doesn't raise your blood Sugar. Please comment. Thanks I also enjoy the knowledge you are providing.
I only use sugar for one thing- 1/2 tsp in my triple espresso each morning. I have tried everything from aspartame to pure Monk fruit but each one ruined the espresso with its aftertaste.
What are the dangers of erythritol? For at least two days, the erythritol levels grew more than high enough to trigger changes in platelet function. These results suggest that consuming erythritol can increase blood clot formation. This, in turn, could increase the
i don't understand why we as society continue to search for sugar substitute or alternative when the best course is to eliminate it completely. i thought cutting sugar was impossible but then realize that us human is capable of anything. i have been off sugar for almost a month and feel great like never before.
Agreed, the best way is zero sugar, if anyone consumes a lot of sugars or sweetners then as with smoking, cut down gradually until you don't need it anymore, this is what i did many decades ago, and that includes cigarettes, the body needs time to adjust to losing it's dependance on something, be it nicotine, drugs, caffeine or sugar, be patient but be determined, and it will happen.
I tasted those branded artificial sugar but I didn't use it in regular basis. I don't know if you've known brown sugar but this one I used it. Well, I just used it not often because I'm avoiding sugar. Since I have cancer, the more I'm avoiding any artificial stuff. Thanks I found this channel because I need more info about diabetes. I was diagnosed type 2 diabetes at the age of 34 and now I'm 52😊. I had my insulin more than 4yrs now. I really love to eat and I can't omit my rice. Only I dropped my rice before my surgery is like 2months I don't have rice. Doctor wondered why my sugar getting high since my intake isn't much and that was during my confinement. I don't know why that happened. Thanks Dr. 👍
The latest studies show erythritol as being very dangerous. Increasing chances for heart attacks and strokes. Really surprised me but made me stop to think weather it’s safe at all anymore .
I think tose studies may be inconclusive.. cuz correlation does not equal causation.... having already had stroke...im not looking to have another one and being southern....i lo e sweet tea. I recently just reintroduced sugar to my diet....but today ibought some unsweetened black tea and added afourth cup of erythrytol. I tink sugar would be worse for me.

No, Doc. Thank you so much for these information. This was awesome and clearly a top notch health concern. What an amazing way to deal with sweeteners. Congrats for a comprehensive 'lecture' about this topic. So enlightening.
I have found that pure Erythritol works best for me. I do not like Stevia or Monkfruit. I do occasionally have zero soda with Aspertame. Hopefully they will configure an erythritol only based soda one of these days! None of these raise my blood sugar. Make sure you read packages to make sure that there is no added dextrose or maltodextrin in them.
Stevia organic drops is the best you only need 2 drops for every 10 oz of liquid and is always best to just get rid of sugary cravings, for coffee I just use laird powder coconut creamer, for tea real honey is the best healthy option if you're not allergic to it, maple syrup is a good natural option for things like smoothies and is good for the immune system, technically it looks like the only sweetners that have nutritional value are Honey, maple syrup and date syrup all others are just sweetners maybe coconut sugar has some benefits but I haven't done enough research on it but it does taste good with coffee .
Love the video! Would you mind posting the resources you use? I’ve read through several meta-analyses and done lots of reading on the research of the subject in grad school - but would love to see the resources you recommend!

Using equals all the time coz im diabetic but still craving 4 my daily coffee...trying to reduce it by half sachet a day. Thanks ..From ur video Now its explain why my cake taste weird after using equal. Try to reduce my zero coke as well to 1 can perweek😅
The one sweetener are the best and heathy is Stevia. I grow the plant and it is 100 times sweet and far better. Don't put this down unless you try it as go to a nursey and ask if they have the plant and if so let them pick a leaf or you can and try it. I'm diabetic and have been using this for 22 years.
Doc, you're a joy to watch! I'm usually not so keen to watch long videos but yours make exception. I relate a short story on topic of sugar substitutes..As I find myself in pre diabetic range (barely) I take steps to lower my sugar glucose. The only sweet snack I still keep is dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao. Well I thought being sugar free would definitely be a bonus but now not so sure about that. I've noticed it's being produced with maltitol sugar alcohol and has 16 g carbohydrates per serving of 4 squares. Prior to that about 3 months ago I used a good quality dark chocolate, also 70% with regular sugar added. I've just recently done my blood glucose and noticed increase in fasting from 104 to 116 and in A1C 5.7 up from 5.2! Can't think of other reasons but what you've said at the end of this video. Wow!
Thank you for approving of truvia. Been liking it a lot and since my aunt put me onto it years ago, it replaced my Splenda. She also put me onto the healthiest and naturaly sweet tasting healthy cereal for diabetics cereal, fiber one (original) great for the heart and low in carbs thanks to dietary fibers.
@@davebryant8050 Agree that no "cereals" are really good to eat because of plant based ingredients and too many carbs. "Pure Sweet" brand of white powdered stevia is great. About 1/2 heaping teaspoon for a gallon of tea or coffee. Lost 40# in one year with it and mylong itme high blood pressure is now normal.

I am a diabetic, my HBA1C is 5.8. I regularly drink coke zero. I do use a CGM for monitoring my blood sugar levels, they don't spike.
You are very much welcome! Stay safe.
,thanks for clearing all these sweetner so
I am diabetic and I was in the store and saw Jelly Belly's sugar free jelly beans.
Just 3-4 Jellybeans?
I learned the same lesson with sugar-free Hershey’s chocolate. It literally gave me the “Hershey Squirts”. I really do love chocolate!
Saccharine? Metallic taste? No, It’s BITTER! My mother used to use it. She died of cancer in 2009. I’m not necessarily drawing conclusions; I leave that up to you.
@@terrycole2407it sweetened with sucralose .
I learned to play the Xylitol in high school.
Sweet!
You’re a total dork for saying that! I laughed so hard though. Well done.🤣🤣🤣
LOL!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Xylitol almost killed my dog a few months ago but similar experiences
@@anonpear7 sorry to hear that. Glad to hear that they made it.
Could the aspartame ruin my glucose levels?
I noticed that you didn't mention Monkfruit in your video. It's my favorite sweetener and has no effect on my blood sugar. Oh and that erythritol has a cooling almost numbing effect if used by itself.
I'm on carnivore diet, losing inches, and t2d is getting better a little everyday..ty for your advice 💯🙏
I will look for the real stevia extract now . 🌿🌸🤗 im only barely prediabetic and hope to improve 🤲
Am I the only one who hates the aftertaste of stevia?
Can't stand stevia! Sometimes it's OK in baking.
I’ve never had any aftertaste. I only use it in my coffee in the morning. Or my unsweetened iced tea. I put a few drops of it in that.
Coconut sugar has an aftertaste that caused me not to even consider using it.
I have an allergy to Stevia which I found out after using it with my coffee. I get itchy eyes and mouth.
No. I hate the too sweet after taste of Stevia.
When I watch your video’s I learn and surprised ! Very helpful and knowledgeable videos. Salute to you doctor. 👍😃😀
Thanks doc. I've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a month ago.. This video really helped.
Thank you Dr Elgin, I will switch to Erythritol…and Stevia as soon as possible, and drop the Aspartame and Sucralose usage.
@divox9pqr You're welcome and thank you for sharing.
I have switched to Erythritol since last week. I love it.
Sorry I didn’t get most of it, so what’s best for us in simple English?
THAT is up to you.
He told you the facts if each. There is no objectively best option, because every human is different.
If you want the best way to figure it out for you. Then get you a glucose tester, try a few and see how you personally react. Then choose the one you like best that doesn't spike your glucose, make you feel bad, upset your stomach, etc(most won't do any of those things to most people).

A great channel as well as this channel
If you want to use Stevia only use PURE Organic Stevia
It’s great to know your serious about medicine but able to show a human being side with everyday day words of reality. Great video as always!!! ❤️ love your shirt!!!
Thank you so much!
I always wondered about whether xylitol would have an effect gut bacteria, since one of the reasons it is put into gum and mints is that it interrupts replication of mouth bacteria. 🤷♀️
I stopped using it because it’s toxic to dogs and they share all my food 😋
By the way, you’re pretty funny.

ASPARTAME needs to be pulled from the market
Cheers
I have been using sucralose for several years and sucralose doesn't spike my blood sugar and I have never been healthier than I am now.
This is best video on sweetners that I've found on UA-cam. Thanks.

I have tried to like Stevia, but it just has an oily after taste to me. I like Splenda the best.
Love your information…. why does everyone always leave out monkfruit? In my opinion best sweetener and very little to no effect on blood sugar….
Please address Monk Fruit, and Inulin sweeteners. Also, combo sweeteners based on combinations of Stevia, Erythritol, Inulin and Monk Fruit. Thanks.
i get SO overwhelmed with this...
A pinch of baking soda in coffee will do the same
But one resent study shows that erythritol is closely associated with risk for major adverse cardiovascular events. People who have high blood levels of erythritol are more prone to heart attacks, strokes and even death.
Is it better to use small amount of raw organic sugar instead of refined sugar and chemical lab sweetener?
God Bless you and Happy New Year❤
Hi mine is 88 I use Organic Stevia or Splenda. But I'm not a diabetic. I wish you Well ✨✨✨✨✨✨

Wow! I had no idea gut bacteria will affect blood sugar and how we react to sweeteners
Thank you for this helpful video. What do you think of monk fruit?
Greetings I've used monk fruit/erythritol for years. But recently read a health study is out on erythritol and concluded it caused red blood cell problems. Please let us know any updates on this research.
Thank you😊
You're the best Dr. !!!
Wow, thanks!
Thank you for this very informative video. I have cut way down on my sweeteners Monk fruit which is mainly Erythritol and use a third of what the recipe usually calls for and for muffins I sweeten them with berries or frozen raspberries picked in the summer.. much better than sweeteners. Very good show.
Hi. Thank you for the great video. I would like to ask if erithrytol damages the liver? Thanks.

I just discovered your channel and I am glad that I did. Thank you very much for your content !!!
I only use sugar for one thing- 1/2 tsp in my triple espresso each morning. I have tried everything from aspartame to pure Monk fruit but each one ruined the espresso with its aftertaste.
Try Allulose

I've been a prediabetic since January 2021 and I don't have no sugar cravings but I crave carbs but I limit myself from the white carbs😕😕😕😕😕😢
I would add some of the fillers companies may add to bulk up their products can cause stomach upset (Splenda in my case). Found that out the hard way.
Do you have any knowledge how Stevia and Erithretol affects the liver? thank you
I didn't see anything about Allulose. That is my favorite sweetener. No strange aftertaste, no blood sugar spikes and I can bake with it.
The sugar alcohols and yes erythritol too gives me diarrhea every time I tried monkfruit and finally had to throw it out because of side effects.
Thanks Dr. 👍
Thanks Dr Ergin for the helpful information 🤗
My pleasure!
The latest studies show erythritol as being very dangerous. Increasing chances for heart attacks and strokes. Really surprised me but made me stop to think weather it’s safe at all anymore .
Yep best to stay away. Had to throw out monk fruit from a long time ago because its main ingredient was that
I think tose studies may be inconclusive.. cuz correlation does not equal causation.... having already had stroke...im not looking to have another one and being southern....i lo e sweet tea. I recently just reintroduced sugar to my diet....but today ibought some unsweetened black tea and added afourth cup of erythrytol. I tink sugar would be worse for me.

Great suggestion!
So you're saying 🤔 we might as well eat regular sugar.
Wow your correct , mind blown.Glad i watched this one thankyou.

Careful Erythritol has been found dangerous now too⚠️
Stevia organic drops is the best you only need 2 drops for every 10 oz of liquid and is always best to just get rid of sugary cravings, for coffee I just use laird powder coconut creamer, for tea real honey is the best healthy option if you're not allergic to it, maple syrup is a good natural option for things like smoothies and is good for the immune system, technically it looks like the only sweetners that have nutritional value are Honey, maple syrup and date syrup all others are just sweetners maybe coconut sugar has some benefits but I haven't done enough research on it but it does taste good with coffee .
Thank you doc.. always watching from Philippines 🇵🇭

Thank you!! But I'm so confused now. Can you just give me a yes or no.....can I keep using Stevia????🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁
Where does Allulose fit into the picture?
Thanks for the video it was very helpful.
Glad it helped
Wow!
Thank you so much for all your videos, I’ve been using monk fruit sugar, can you tell us if it’s good for a pre diabetic to use?
Tell us about ALLULOSE!

Hi Doc, I heard that Maltodextrin has a glycemic index of 180 😕 Is that your understanding? It's in SO MANY "sugar free" foods. Thanks
I am glad too! I will try trivia with diet too. I didn't know there was such a thing.

"Pure Sweet" brand of white powdered stevia is great.
About 1/2 heaping teaspoon for a gallon of tea or coffee.
Lost 40# in one year with it and mylong itme high blood pressure is now normal.
