alloulose is the answer. It is not artificial, it’s a rare sugar made from corn that adds little carbs and stimulates GLP 1. Other than being pricy, it’s 70% as sweet as sugar and it tastes like sugar and bakes well.
Saccharine was the first, marketed on large scale in the 60's. It was used during the WW2 when sugar was rationed. There is evidence that any sweet flavor stimulates the release of insulin which leads to insulin resistance. So it may not have calories but it may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes.
Yes I have read about this insulin resistance risk in at least one book. I was surprised it wasn't referred to in this presentation. No breakdown of the various artificial sweeteners to give advice on which one/s may be better...

I now drink water, sometimes with lemon, lime or both. As an ex-smoker, I do chew sugar-free gum. Gotta have some vices!!! Now I'm going to check all foods that I buy for artificial sweeteners. Question. What kind of dosages of erythritol were given in the study you cited? I think that would be helpful in determining whether to give up my stevia/erythritol sweetener. Thanks for another good video.
I had a relative who seemed super healthy and did triathlons into her 70s. She never drank water, only diet soda. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and lived only six months. I've always wondered if the artificial sweeteners had anything to do with her death at 76. I'll stick with lemon water and one cup of coffee a day. I also use monkfruit powder with no added erythritol. It's on Amazon for cheap.
"seemed super healthy and did triathlons into her 70s" ... do you know how many people would love to have a quality of life at old age like that!!! This sounds more like a pro for sweeteners, because I'm sure the result would've been different if it wasn't DIET soda. By 76 most people would've had cancer, regardless of what they did.
@@farab4391 I disagree that most people have cancer by 76. My late mother never had cancer and was older than my relative. My mother had diabetes and several chronic conditions, yet she lived to 82 and never got cancer. I had three other relatives, all with chronic health issues such as heart disease, but they never got cancer and lived to well past 90. The one who died of pancreatic cancer had no chronic health problems. I believe the problem was no water and lots of soda, regardless of whether it was diet or sugar sweetened. I know diabetics who have used artificial sweetener for so long that nothing natural tastes sweet at all!. I can always tell if something has artificial sweetener in it, it's always that aftertaste. I use sugar in my coffee and tea. I was trying to lower the amount I used and simply reduced it by a teaspoon at a time.. I've reduced my coffee by 3 teaspoons and my tea by half a cup for a gallon. Now the restaurants that serve sweet tea are making it too sweet for me. Others feel the same way and have started ordering half and half tea. They fill the glass with half sweet tea and half unsweetened tea for a nice blend. Personally I've seen more success in lowering the amount of sugar than sweetener. Some people are even using two types of sweeteners, maybe for a price saving of the more natural tasting. When I considered artificial sweetener, there were already reports of the danger of using them. But the thing that kept me away from sweetener was the aftertaste. Some people don't care for sweets but for the ones who do, consume in moderation! And remember, birthday cake has no calories or other bad things!🎂 Thanks for sharing another captivating topic!
I'm have a massive sweet tooth, and at 43 I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the diabetes specialist told me to switch to diet soft drinks because I love soft drinks so much.
Wow. You can put a bit of juice in plain soda water---I do it for my husband. Sometimes I squeeze an orange into his water, or use 1/4 cup of apple juice, or squished strawberries, frozen berries. Just don't drink a whole lot of juice cause lots of sugar in it.
Slowly wean yourself off the sodas whether they are diet or regular. The diet sodas actually make people hungry. The regular sodas add calories thus adding extra weight to our bodies which is most often the cause of Type 2 Diabetes. You will feel better, lose weight and be in better health by getting off all sodas. I know it's hard, been there, done that, but if I can do it anyone can do it. Lots of luck!
@@jonap5740 You realize that juice is just sugar, right? Unless you leave all of the pulp in it, you aren't don't anything better than adding plain sugar.
You do need sugar to live, but you do not need to ingest sugar from the diet. The small amounts that are needed are produced by the liver without problems. Gloceneogenisis.
@tlouiseduch6146 Can I ask where you buy just Stevia with nothing else added ? I use the brand truvia from the Stevia Leaf but it contains Erythritol. I cant seem to find plain stevia.
Best way to sweeten smoothies and cakes; dades! Ditch the sugar, and sweetners. No sodas, you will love water once you get use to it. A great alternative to soda: 'jamaica water'; it taste like cranberry juice (1/2 cup hibiscus dry flowers 5 cups of water; boiling and cooling; that is it). Cucumber water is tasty and refreshing as well...

My husband has been drinking diet colas for years and years (most of his life) he's 68. He started as a teen drinking colas with real sugar but changed to diet colas thinking it was a better choice. He has heart disease and blocked arteries. He has 2 stents and a special type of drill procedure coming up to try to unblock a lrg artery they couldn't get thru during angioplasty. I never thought artificial sweeteners could do that. He's addicted to his soda. 😕
This is a very complex area and it is difficult to throw all artificial sweeteners in one basket. For instance take Sucralose. It is a modified sugar molecule that is clorinated. This sounds a little scary but then think about salt. Salt is clorinated Sodium and the chlorine locks the molecule down so that it cannot be broken - Same thing with Sucralose. The Sugar molucule is locked down which makes it heat stable, it cannot be broken down so exits the body in your urine. Sucralose is also 600 times sweeter than sugar, so I find it difficult for so such a little amout that does not break down to do you any harm. If you can prove me wrong with some study you have in hand please do.
I drank quite a bit of coke daily for years. I have also tried sugar free caffeine mints to help me stop drinking cokes. I'm now (in the past month) down to 1 coke most days, and none on some days. Drinking water throughout the day, and having a smoothie made with milk for lunch. I'm quite a bit overweight and at my last doctor's appointment, my a1c was within 0.1 of prediabetic. So, on that front, I think the artificial sweetener is a good thing. But I also have a hereditary higher risk of blood clots. My caffeine mints use the sweetener that starts with an X. (can't remember how to spell it right now.) I take a daily low dose aspirin. I'll stick with the artificial sweetener for now. May try to quit it in a year or so.
Thanks for this video! I use a stevia/erythritol product to sweeten yogurt and iced coffee. I will discontinue immediately with hip replacement upcoming and I definitely don't want anything to contribute to chance of post surgery blood clots!
Love your shows. Wish you would have drilled down on the liver. Does art sweeteners fool the liver? And tell people that sugar ingestion in moderation does not cause diabetes but rather the weight inc. Thanks
You do NOT need sugar. You need glucose and your liver makes all the glucose you need. A glucose meter reading of 100 is equivalent to 1 tsp of glucose in your bloodstream.
I have T2DM, so I try to avoid simple sugars. I often drink 1- 1 1/2 liters of diet soda (aspartame) a day. It is really hard for me to drink plain, unflavored, flat water.
For me, regular sugar makes me break out with acne really bad. Im certain it's from sugar (and oily junk food) because with sucralose replacement's or the occasional aspartame drink I have no issues.
Growing up, my younger sister was a type I diabetic so the only sweets in the house was candy she snuck in. Even now, I find the taste of ‘regular’ soda too sweet. There are many recipes for cobbler and pies where I use half the sugar the recipe calls for. A sweet lemon pie? Mine are tart, like lemons! 😅
I am confused about the statement, (dietary) glucose is required in our diets (4:15). I am not advocating a carnivore diet, but there's no glucose in a carnivore diet and yet some people seem to do fine on it.
I have fibromyalgia, sugar causes pain even too many carbs do. They put sugar in everything. It was even hard to find mayo & mustard w/o it. I Drink water. After having a heart attack 9 years ago,I went on a low sugar and salt diet.I gave up all soft drinks .Now I drink mostly water and a couple of cups of coffee and tea per day. I limit Beer to one pint per week.Lost 40 pounds.Life is good!
I very much enjoy your videos. Thank you for the great information. It was recommended to me to try the Spindrift sodaa drinks. They are carbonated and made with real fruit juice-no sugar, no artificial sugar. I enjoy the lemon and the lime choices. :)
I used to drink a can of Diet Coke every afternoon at work..until my pod mate pointed out that it was quite a chemical concoction. I read the list & moved to tap water
It’s been 6 or 7 years & I don’t miss it very much..I have a Diet Coke every few months now..
Great info. Thanks. Dr. Brad a suggestion, I have a soda stream device and I find just carbonated cold water is very refreshing on a hot day and to me somehow it feels like a treat. No calories and fizzy. If you two ever decide to retire I think you could do a comedy routine. Love your humor.
Their humor seems to me to be a bit of Bob and Ray and the Car Talk Brothers.
Any thoughts on Organic Monk Fruit liquid sweetener? Thanks Docs!
alloulose is the answer. It is not artificial, it’s a rare sugar made from corn that adds little carbs and stimulates GLP 1. Other than being pricy, it’s 70% as sweet as sugar and it tastes like sugar and bakes well.
I use monk fruit sweetener and stevia plant based sweetener. BAI flavored water recently switched from Erithatrol to Stevia and monk fruit sweetener.
I started eating sugar free when I went onKETO. Lost weight but now I’m hooked on sugar free cough drops. I go through a couple large bags a week! I’m 73 and quite frankly I feel like crap!! After listening to your video, I am going to try to cut way back and stop it altogether! My grandmother had an artificial liquid sweetener in a glass bottle she’d drizzle on her grapefruit etc. She was an Adventist and had a healthy diet, but died of stomach cancer at 84. Maybe it was the sweetener
Similar story here. I’m 73, keto 2 years, feel great, but I eat several mints daily. I’ve also started making desserts with erythritol. This study is troubling. My mom used saccharine for years, also had stomach cancer in her 80s.
@@estellashumate1097 I also do the sugar free cough drops, now at 72 still feel like crap. Thinking it was my meds but still looking for the right balance.
Or maybe she died of old age at 84!?
If you feel like crap on Keto, why don’t you try plant based whole food? Much healthier.
16:13 something I started drinking a few years ago to satisfy the carbonation of pop, is lightly flavored carbonated water. Now I even drink non flavored sometimes. I never have enjoyed the “diet” regime of soda offerings, but I liked my Mountain Dew and would get a little carried away. Good discussion, docs. 👍
I commented before I read some of the other comments. I remember Tab as a kid and thought it was gross, but Fresca tasted pretty good until a few minutes after drinking it. It also was originally sweetened with saccharine.
I watched entire video and wanted to provide some feedback. I am a user of Splenda artificial sweetener, and assumed it was a better alternative to sugar. I use it generally in my morning coffee.
*Side-effects include: craving "starches" and I have sensation of dehydration constantly.
Thank you for covering this topic.

I am diabetic Type 2 and I have used Splenda for 20yrs with no issues. It's the only one I can tolerate taste wise. I have tried Stevia and the aftertaste is just awful. I use Splenda in my Chai Tea everyday. I've tried Monk fruit and I'm using more of it than the Splenda so not sure about that one either.. It sucks...lol
I gave up diet drinks like Coke or Pepsi because I found my body suddenly started to crave sugar. I've always been into salt, which is not good either. I now drink water, sometimes with lemon, lime or both. As an ex-smoker, I do chew sugar-free gum. Gotta have some vices!!! Now I'm going to check all foods that I buy for artificial sweeteners. Thanks for this v-log
So is it better add artificial sweetener to your coffee or just sugar?
don't artificial anything
Question. What kind of dosages of erythritol were given in the study you cited? I think that would be helpful in determining whether to give up my stevia/erythritol sweetener. Thanks for another good video.
30g dosages as
mentioned on various news outlets. My sugar free gum has 1 gm, so I'm not concerned.
@@camguy5238 Thanks
Moderation is the key in most cases.
They have a video on lemon water
She had an excellent quality of life, both personally and healthwise. Still, she had a bad habit that shortened her life. My other relatives had quality of life due to great family and friends. Quality of life is partly health but mostly about good relationships.
@@julieoelker1865 you’re welcome to research the numbers yourself, just remember that anything over 50% means ‘most’. Everything else you say regarding your relative is just what you like to believe, it’s not based in fact. But I would agree that drinking water is healthier than drinking soda.
@@farab4391 true, the cause of her cancer is just a personal belief of mine. I wish there was a good way to test the effects of artificial sweeteners on people, but I don't know how. Thanks for the clarification of "most."
I have switched from aspartame to monkfruit sweetener. Haven’t had any type of soda since my gout diagnosis in May this year.
Good choice
Thank you for the information .
Great video, love the matching pyjamas. Serious stuff but leave us all laughing at the end, 2 Canadians saying "remember you are in charge of your own health ", Brilliant.
Honestly, we can’t tell if you’re being serious or sarcastic. Hope you liked it either way.
Greetings from Altea southern Spain. Really enjoy your very informative succinct videos. It was a bit of both but given the nutter Trudea in Canada your closing line is not really true is it. Keep up the good work, you're helping people all over the globe. @TalkingWithDocs
And remember, birthday cake has no calories or other bad things!🎂
Thanks for sharing another captivating topic!
Thanks guys good work
I'm have a massive sweet tooth, and at 43 I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the diabetes specialist told me to switch to diet soft drinks because I love soft drinks so much.
Stevia is all natural! I love it! It goes in my coffee everyday, but i like it so sweet that i add sugar too.
@tlouiseduch6146 Can I ask where you buy just Stevia with nothing else added ? I use the brand truvia from the Stevia Leaf but it contains Erythritol. I cant seem to find plain stevia.
Thank you for being so sweet (and informative) 👍
You are so welcome!
Dates😊
Dates are natural sugar, so its a sugar.
Now listening! Hi Docs! I went back to sugar! Not even doing stevia! Everything in moderation. You can never not be sweet Dr. Z!
Why?
@@wellhellothere6347 I just don't like the taste!
@@barbarak8158 Nothing wrong with that!
Stop eating any sugar. Just eat meat.
I would love to hear more about " Xylitol " that I keep hearing about as a sweetener.
Ok will add to the list!
Toxic to dogs so be careful about that.
@@r-anne7375 me too! My sugarless gum has that and I chew a lot. It has me worried.
Its a laxative and you can get diarrhea. Avoid it!
What about Stevia?
Thanks for your work creating videos guys.
Our pleasure!
When i was drinking things with aspartame my body hurt and now I drink plain water and unsweetened green tea and 1 cup of black coffee a day.
Are you guys able to do a video on Silent Acid Reflux please? 😊
Oh no! I have been thinking that Erythritol was the safest to use - now that’s bad too! No more processed sweets for me. Thanks docs! Your videos are very informative! 🙏🙏
Excellent information. Thank you.
Great info. I don’t like soft drinks. I’m hyperglycemic and have to really watch sugar content. I do use Raw Stevia for my iced tea because I can control the amount I use plus it doesn’t taste fake. I do believe sugar and salt are the culprits for a lot of health issues. I control both. Love your videos! 🤗👍👏
@sharonmansfield3053 May I ask where you get Raw Stevia ? Thank you
I just drink spring water, green tea and sometimes coffee.
5:08 I recall that Saccharin was out before Aspartame, but it was found to cause cancer in the state of California.
And it tasted like....!
Don't you know EVERYTHING causes cancer in California😉 funny how that works. I think the state itself probably causes cancer😂
Yes many are. Sorry to hear about your husband.
What about xylitol which my dentist says helps prevent tooth decay
Well it is in the same category as the rest. Moderation probably best
So green vegetables, meat, eggs and water would be the perfect or the least damaging and most beneficial. Wonder if Soylent Green would work😁
Thanks guys!
Thanks
“Non nutritive cereal varnish” !! I fell off my chair 😂😂completely relatable
Would love to hear you speak about Allulose and Ozempic
You do NOT need sugar. You need glucose and your liver makes all the glucose you need. A glucose meter reading of 100 is equivalent to 1 tsp of glucose in your bloodstream.
Eat only protein and get back to us.
You need complex carbs, like wholegrains, but not sugar, certainly not added sugar. Fruits are ok.
Your body can create all the glucose it needs, you don't need to get it from your food. Unless you're a T1 diabetic. You guys should know that.
I drink only water or tea. But I use two packets of Splenda in my daily cup of tea.
Nice
What’s your opinion on straight monk fruit?
I have T2DM, so I try to avoid simple sugars. I often drink 1- 1 1/2 liters of diet soda (aspartame) a day. It is really hard for me to drink plain, unflavored, flat water.
Aspartame gives me an awful headache and then a hangover feeling. I am not a fan of the taste of most of the others.
How about Xylutol/Xylotol? Any thoughts?
I have fibromyalgia, sugar causes pain even too many carbs do. They put sugar in everything. It was even hard to find mayo & mustard w/o it. I Drink water. There are foods that have sugar alcohol but I don’t know which brand of sugar alcohol they used. Anything with a number of 8 or higher messes up my digestion. Thank you so much for this information 👍👍👍❤️
Duke's Mayo doesn't add any sugar.
Nor does Primal Kitchen mayonnaise. And it taste good!
@@wellhellothere6347 Thank you❤️
@@annie-k5213 Thank you ❤️ I just found Dukes and I’m going to definitely get Primal Kitchen now too! When I had to start reading labels I was shocked at how many things had sugar in them! A quick Internet search says that Erythritol is naturally occurring in peaches, watermelon, mushrooms and grapes. Are you suggesting to also avoid naturally occurring Erythritol or only the artificial? I tend to stay away from soda (regular and diet), but love all of the food above. Whole foods, mostly plant based and water is what my body does best with.
Yes, they're talking about the artificial-man-made stuff, that is created in a Lab; not whole foods.
@tigarlori2545 Even our body makes erhthritol, but you need to avoid the artificial one. There is no healthy artificial sweetener. Same goes for ultraprocessed food.
If it's made of a plant eat it.
If it's made in a plant don't.
The amount of Erythritol that exist naturally in fruits in miniscule compared to what you get in food or drinks sweetened with it.
I started using Truvia to battle insulin resistance only to find out recently that its mainly Erythritol. I'm really bummed. 😢
Great subject. Any information on genetically modified foods? Thanks
Since you asked, I have been addicted to diet mountain dew for decades. I try to quit. I try other things. I try cutting back. I try replacing it with healthier options, but I still go back to it. It's like trying to quit nicotine. It's a strong addiction. 😢
Must be a caffeine addiction. Quitting uppers is hard.
Are Stevia and monk fruit included in non nutritive sweeteners?
Monk fruit ……. hmmmmmm …..sounds dirty .
Neither are included
Water is your friend.
Only sensible doses. The trend has been to advise an amount of water per day, which can actually dilute your electrolytes, causing other health problems.
Thumbs up 👍 Doc’s
Would you be so kind as to do a study on Energy Drinks 🙏
Saccharin was the first artificial sweetener not aspartame
True. Discovered from coal tar way back when coal tar was the most important feedstock to organic chemistry and the industries that were built by applying it. Dyes, medicines, and then others.
Hey Docs, this is a really good subject. I stay on "diet" drinks as much as possible. My question is why are the Zero, drinks better tasting than "diet" drinks? Think Coke Zero and Diet Coke. Think Pepsi Zero and Diet Pepsi. There are some other similar examples entering into the market. Are Zero drinks all the same basic ingredients? I think safety concerns here are well founded. Thanks Docs. Keep up the good work. Hey Weening, have you tried Kale Zero, yet?
Darlin ... I thought it was Dr Z that didn't like kale?
The best way to avoid sweeteners is to eat more natural unprocessed foods like fruits and veg.
👍 Yes!!!
People with IBS cannot process MOST artificial sweeteners. Check with your RD or GI and the Monash app for the Low FODMAP diet for a complete list. All the best and thank you DOCS for the great videos :-)
i use Stevia, but also some sugar in baking.
But what about Monkfruit and Honey??
I agree! Excellent video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m also curious about monk fruit extract with no other additives. I started using it to get off the artificial sweeteners and I find it a good replacement and it’s sweet.
Considering monk fruits is mainly grown in China, I would avoid it at all cost.
Read the ingredients label on your monk fruit sweetener. Erythritol, Monk Fruit Extract.
@@SemperFiBiologist I use "It's Just" brand and this is all that's on the label (Monkfruit Extract (25% Mogroside V)
I occasionally bake and use monk or stevia when the recipe calls for erythritol. Wondering if that is better for you or not?
My vote is for moderation in all things.
Yes
Primarily, I only drink filtered water. I lived in the southwest (US) desert for 30 years and always carry water with me. Rarely, I will have a "real Coke" , or some other soda/pop maybe 6 times a year. Today, I am more worried about corn starch in nearly every grocery store food aisle product.
I changed to a Whole Foods Plant-Based lifestyle and am never going back. I am much healthier and off most medications and will be 79 in less than a month. I can still walk 5 miles, non-stop, in about 3 hours. I also lost 50lbs.
Great video, as always. Why should you deliberately take in artificial chemicals. We get enough of them, as you mentioned, unknowingly in so much of what eat and drink.Choose natural when you can.
