I was fascinated and perturned and felt such a sense of dread that in death in her hands all the characters in town had the same names as the ones she made up. First of all, i LOVED the book beyond belief! BUT I really didn't know what to make of that! I assume it's almost like.. by a certain point she was perhaps just hearing what she wanted to as a coping mechanism for her past traumas? She had already basically used Magda to project her entire being onto, and used Charlie as someone to unconditionally love her, which she felt she'd never had before... Such a beautiful book... WOW

I REALLY enjoyed "Death In Her Hands" in spite of it not being a typical book I'd enjoy. I'm not a fan of either unreliable narration nor first person perspectives, but THIS was so well done that I found it really hard to put down. I particularly enjoyed how halfway through things start to reveal themselves and how things become more dark and sinister. Its such a great 'slow burn' story....and I did NOT expect that ending. Great! Moshfegh is one of my favourites now too.

Both of these both sound like interesting books. I’ve read Otessa’s short stories but have yet to read her novels. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one! It’s the only one I still need to purchase of hers.

I have not read her short stories and am hesitant as I don't really enjoy short stories that much.

I believe I gave it 3 stars. I am learning that I’m not a big fan of short stories either. There are a few I’ve hung onto but most of the time I get rid of it after reading or donate without reading. I connect better with novels definitely!

Great graphic design on both the covers, make you want to pick the book up - all too rare these days, at least state side.

One day I will read Ottessa Moshfegh. Just not quite sure when.. (hopefully sooner rather than later ;P )
The Monsters We Deserve sounds really good! The "you-perspective" (how do you call that? sorry my brain doesn't seem to be fully functioning these days) really intrigues me!

I atually don't know if there is a name. 2nd person narration? But no, that's something else than what is happening here.

@@1book1review Yeah, no that's not what I meant. I Just meant the addressing the reader/publisher. (though reading back my comment I worded it completely wrong, haha. not sure where my brain's at these days..)

I've never read anything by Moshfegh, this sounds interesting. I enjoy unreliable, unlikeable narrators sometimes.

I read all her novels and there's something about all of them. The plot ideas alone are so different and then her writing.

Hey I was just curious if you could recommend me some books originally in German (I will read the translation)
I am taking a challenge reading translated works around the world and right then your notification popped up (correct me if I am wrong you're German)
    What would be you're nomination?

The first that comes to mind is Herr Lehmann by Sven Regener (don't know the English title), also recently read and reviewed the Pine Islands by Marion Poschmann.13.5 lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers is another recent read I enjoyed and reviewed. That's three different styles of books. Good luck on the challenge.

Hmmm I'm interested in The Monsters We Deserve it's the whole Frankstein thing. But what's this two book reviews on a Monday . What is it a holiday? Not that I'm not thankful but I'm surprised. I mean if this becomes a habit you'll have to change your name .
