In this video, I take my son out for his first 'solo' night in a tent in the wild; he chose the Nordisk Telemark 2.2LW which is a fantastic, light weight shelter which is quick and simple to pitch. Tom carried his own pack too and did as much as he could which was great to see; he is learning well !
I opted for the Hilleberg Nammatj which I bought used and there's a whole story in itself there which I will do a follow up video on. It was pretty windy, with forecast max gusts of up to 47mph, so it was a testing night for Tom. Both tents performed admirably and we enjoyed cooking burgers whilst looking out at the fantastic views. Sadly, no aurora was visible after the amazing show the previous night, which we now know was due to a drop off in geomagnetic activity from G5 to G3.
We finished the night by listening to the Deborah Hatswell podcast 'BBR' case files which is all about ghostly and mysterious encounters throughout the UK.

Every credit for Tom wanting to be a little distance away from you so it gave him the feel of solo camping but also get why you stopped awake for a while. the light show was amazing and rather emotional. The young fella just perfectly described the feeling of freedom you get from wild camping. My own theory is that it's a distant inherited memory from our ancestors, in the days when travelling required some form of shelter.
Yeah, I think you're right! Although some people say wild camping is their worst nightmare! I absolutely love being out - totally at peace on the fells, mountains and hills with a tent.
That was class and Tom is a credit to you Chris. Great lad indeed.

Awesome tent the Nammatj 2! On my wish list for now. Just did the full Kungsleden in the Enan and i am blown away by the Hilleberg quality, ease of use and set up in bad weather.
@@adriaanrijkse I would love to hike that trail one day. Yes, many people on UA-cam bad mouth Hilleberg tents and I can never understand it, they make the most reliable, easy to use and rugged tents that money can buy in my opinion.
@@MCMOutdoors Highly recommended trail if you have the time! I do not understand the hate on Hilleberg. Saw them everyday in Sweden, and the weather can get really serious there. Yes the price is a lot of money but it is also a lot of tent. Will be saving up for the Nammatj 2 now. Cheers!

I'm a big lad ,6'3 17 stone and have no qualms carrying big loads. Great video and lovely to see the youth getting involved who at some point will carry on your passion when you can't 👍

Yep, hopefully he will meet some mates that did what I did, head off to Betws Y Coed, play 'pain cricket' with aim to hit testicles with rock solid casey from 5m away and neck a bottle of vodka before hitting Crib Goch the next day. Chris hope you enjoy the Nammatj for many years to come. I've used one man tents for a good few years, one of which I paid £65 for and still really like, but decided i could use a little more space so I bought an Abisko lite 2. Like you I'd watched Tom Heaney's reviews and decided I'd never put it through what he had plus it ticked a few other boxes i wanted ticked.
Yes, Tom certainly puts the tents through their paces - very thorough. His review on the Nammatj is great. Managed to pick this up at a low price (for a reason :/ ) and sold some of my older gear to fund it - good to recycle the gear for the channel. ATB

Yes, always good to be in a new tent! He was...... but was just something I wasn't happy with so couldn't really relax with Tom being on his own in his tent. A top night, can't beat those podcasts about spooky tales when out camping. ATB pal

Alright mate. Couldn't say yet - will be a fair while before I've used it in various conditions. Lhotse sold quickly on ebay.

What a cracking video show casing Tom 's first wild camp. The young lad was eloquent and is a natural in front of the camera.
The path he is on will ground him in so many ways . I know he will succeed with his DoE award scheme.
I'm encouraging my Grandson in the same way ,to learn and respect Mother Nature and the great outdoors. You just can't beat it.

I absolutely loved this as it brought back some very happy memories of when i went camping with my dad many years ago when i was Toms age, im 42 now but remember it like it was yesterday!
It wasnt a wild camp but an adventure all the same.Just me and dad in a field on a windy night in a tent in the Yorkshire dales.
I lost my dad to dementia 2 years ago now, he was just 69😢
To see you two out in the wild like this is just superb, father and son making memories. Truly fantastic to see and very nostalgic for me.

Memories last forever 👊👍🏕️ Yeah, the Halland I guess is similar as far as being a tunnel tent, but definitely only 2/3 season. Where the Halland shines is the weight and pack size - both negligible so that's a lot to be said for such room. I got this used via ebay, it arrived with almost a tear in it - at a low price - but that wasn't in the description....... A whole other story for another video 👍

Great video as always mate, it reminded me of first time I took my lad out camping which was around 25 years ago now and he was around the same age as Tom. I hope you both enjoy many more years camping together as we have, we still go several times a year and will do so as long as I can continue. Once the camping bug is set in it never leaves us does it pal. Keep up the great content. 👍

great father and son wild camp. I find the Nammatj 2 the best tent Hilleberg tent , what Hilleberg makes.But this is my opinion. The weight is not too bad if you look at how much space you get and then you also get the strong fabrics and poles that exist. And this tent generally does not suffer much from condensation, provided the conditions are somewhat normal. Cheers. Atb Raymond

Hi - haha, which the Telemark or the Nammatj ? Nammatj means a lone mountain standing at the head of a valley - it's Sami which is a northern Scandinavian indigenous language. Telemark is a lovely county in Norway - would love to do some trekking there!

Was a fantastic camp - I state in the video that I don't name exact locations so as to avoid any unnecessary pressure on one particular spot. I always find the best way is to get out on day hikes and recce potential spots, mark them with pins etc on your phone - good fun and a great way to explore. ATB 👍🏕️
