  • Nordisk Telemark 2.2LW ULTIMATE Review - Following extensive use and extreme limits testing !
    This is my honest review of the Nordisk Telemark 2.2 LW (lightweight) tent. Made from SilNylon - the tent weighs in at just 1010 grams (can be made lighter without stuff sack), which - for a 2 person shelter with two doors - is really quite an achievement by Nordisk.
    Quality craftmanship and materials used throughout, with a single DAC Featherlite Green pole completing the setup. I have used this tent in the majority of conditions, including an extreme 'Red' weather warned storm whereby the tent was tested to it's upper limit. As such, I am qualified to provide a review about this tent.
    I have left a time index with various bookmarks below which I hope is helpful. I was sent this tent by Nordisk almost a year ago, however there has been no direction of input from them and I am free to provide by unbiased and objective views on the tent.
    The fact the tent has two doors is great, especially considering the weight - if two people are in the tent, you don't have to climb over each other to get out. The ability to make the vestibule / inner area bigger to suit your needs is another great feature and extremely useful.
    The tent does not come seam sealed - that is standard for the majority of sil-nylon tents (some manufacturers charge an extra fee as this has to be done by hand) - the seams cannot be taped as it does not adhere to the fabric used. Therefore Nordisk recommend that the tent is sealed which is an easy and pleasant task - I did mine on a warm & breezy day and it was dry in a few hours.
    Things I would like to see improved:
    - Better mechanism to secure the door openings i.e. spring toggle
    - Ability to pre-attach groundsheet to main tent so as to be able to pitch as one
    To surmise, this is a top quality and very light weight shelter which can easily accommodate two people - it is a 2/ 3 season tent designed to enable to you travel light and fast so you can enjoy your outdoor adventures.
    Thanks for watching - if you have any additional questions please let me know in the comments below:

    Having it for over a year, you have certainly put it through it's paces and a very comprehensive review. It was good to hear it was an unbiased review and you hit on the positives and highlighted a few weak points that you thought were important. I love the small pack size and weight, almost unreliable for such a well made tent and it did looked real easy to get pitched. Cheers Alan

    What a great and honest review. Im nearly 68 and started wild camping last year. this video really helped me in my decision to buy the Telemark 2.2LW and I am so glad i did. I have now camped and fly fished some of the remote Llyns in Wales on several occasions, I agree it is a 2/3 season tent but it is an absolutely superb piece of light weight and very well made piece of equipment, when used under the right conditions. Thanks so much for the advice.

    Thanks, a stellar review. I bought this tent for use later this year, so have only test pitched so far. Watched your video and it is spot on, but I still picked up a couple of tips. A really complete honest,comprehensive appraisal and review of this tent.
    There are many positive features which make the Nordisk stand out,the weight of the tent being a primary example.
    I'm with yourself on the subject of the footprint attachment issue.
    I hope Nordisk take the time to respond to your critique of their product and introduce the enhancements to the tent,then that would be a positive result all round.
    Appreciate your time,effort, personal thoughts and ideas in producing this review,well done Chris.

    Really good and in-depth review of an excellent tent. I have owned one and sold it on as I couldn't get on with the lack of height in the bottom of the tent - Feet area. Pop in an inflatable mat and a back sleeper and every camp with rainfall or condensation led to a wet sleeping bag. This was my experience and no reflection on the tent, Nordisk or your fine review. Thank you for sharing. 👍

    Phenomenal weight!
    A nifty idea there with the tent bag turning into the internal pocket. And I see its inside out therefore eliminating items coming into contact with dampness if you're out for multiple days and have to pack away a wet tent 👍
    Another great feature is turning the side poles into king poles for an awning. (I've done this with a trekking pole on my Lanshan but like you say, its much better to utilise something already on the tent)
    Great review 👌

    This is the single best review I have ever seen on this tent. Covered virtually everything Chris, many thanks. I've still not seen two people lying on two sleeping mats with their kits inside the tent before. I'm sold on its one person usage in spring - early autumn. Just not sure whether it's the one for me and my wife together. Would also be good to see which one is better - 2.2LW or the Scarp 1. Cheers mate

      I haven't got a Scarp 1 but it is 1 lb heavier, (without the extra crosspole ) than the telemark 2.2.
      Scarp 1 weighs 4.7 lbs when extra crosspole is used. If extra pole is not used you'll have it's pole loops banging on your tent all night.
      When two people are using it, the porch is smaller than that of the Telemark.2.2
      With the extra cross pole it will be stronger than the Telemark 2.2
      This vid may help. By Paul Messner.- Tarptent Scarp 1 TENT | AWESOME features but could be better.

    At last someone talks some common sense regarding condensation with the Telemark 2 tent, I have been using this tent and the 1 man version for years now, and I can honestly say: condensation is no worse than any other tent, I have used. It all comes down to physics, cold outside x warm inside = condensation. A fact of life. It`s a superb little tent I would seriously recommend it to anyone, who is looking for a quality tent.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Ray - totally agree. There are some absurd statements out there regarding condensation in tents - many people fail to grasp that it is not caused by 'faulty' tents. In most cases, the pitch is incorrect, sagging and the tent has not been vented. It is pretty much unavoidable in Winter conditions when it is cold outside and warm inside - many people fail to understand this. In days gone by, cotton tents were far more breathable and this was less noticeable. I think the 2.2 model with additional door and vent, with slight catenary cut on some of the fly panels vents well - it has to be kept taught and re-tensioned when damp (like all SilNylon tents), but it's a great bit of kit. ATB

    Ive bought a Telemark 2 LW and am looking forward to using it this year. Some great features, all shown in your video. It does not come with a separate pole bag as this is integrated into a pocket in the inner tent which is a good design but I like to carry my poles separately as shoving them into such a lightweight tent I feel the sharp edges of the poles might rip it. Stuff sack slightly too small. Bags of room though for 1 person another top review Cheers.

  • @charlesbrecknell4656
    @charlesbrecknell4656 2 роки тому +5

    I've had the 1 man version of this tent for 2 years & I'm afraid I can't recommend it for UK conditions. I was attracted to the low weight (850-900g for 1 man) & it is certainly a high quality product. However it is hopeless in damp or windy conditions. With a sleep mat & sleeping bag in the tent you can't avoid touching the inner tent, as the vertical edges aren't high enough to prevent this. The separation between the inner & outer is too close, esp in windy conditions, so condensation on the fly penetrates the inner & gets your sleeping bag damp. The fundamental problem is that with the 4 short poles at the corners you can't get a stiff pitch in wind or heavy dew/icing conditions. I have gone back to my old Wild Country Zyphros tent because of this, even though it's ~400 g heavier & I'm actively looking for a new light weight alternative.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  2 роки тому +2

      I've heard similar reports with the 1 person variant - luckily this is the 2.2 and as such, very different. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Telemark 1. I find very good separation and clearance within the inner of this. I love tents and have used many in my time, currently trying a Scarp 1 now and impressed so far. The quest for the perfect tent continues!

    Great video.
    I have Telemark 2LW. It's superb.
    Door hooks. Yep I use 2 pegs, one for each door. Start from bottom of the door, pull, roll and peg. N.B. check door zip closes before pegging out the poles. If zip is too tight, slightly move the end of the pole towards the zip.Some people have difficulty putting the inner tent toggle through the ring. Method:- roll the toggle and then push through the toggle.To extract- pull toggle to one side, tip it down,push through.
    Corner poles- iif you want to peg out the awning it is better to use a stick or buy a spare corner pole. Why? Because taking out three corner poles decreases the stability of the tent. Sometimes the corner pole can protrude from the corner sleeve. Answer. I have used strong cotton and sewn the top of all four corner sleeves and I use a spare corner pole when the awning is out. Could use a stick, but not when cycle camping.
    Pegs- pegs are good but if you want stronger pegs, the standard groundhog pegs are too big to fit through the alluminium o rings. Mini groundhogs fit.
    Groundsheet - I use Stormguard window secondary glazing. It's polycro. Cut to size. Weighs approximately 2oz.
    Don't seal the flysheet straightaway. I've used it many times in torrential rain and it's been fine-- so far.
    The foot end of the inner tent is quite steep which makes is easier to access gear at that end.
    There are spare inner tent attaching rings. These cannot be replaced while out on the hill because they go through a sewn material loop. Answer- take a short piece of strong thin webbing,The pieces of webbing that are attached to the tent's card labels are perfect. Use this thin piece of webbing to attach spare o ring to material loop. Can't envisage the original inner tent o rings ever breaking.
    Side entry is much easier than end entrances.
    I have owned Saunders Dalomite(1976)
    Ultimate Phazer dome (1981)
    Ultimate Peapod mid 80s
    Ultimate A frame mountain tent and this tent is the lightest, easiest, most comfortable ( except for Phazer Dome but that weighed 8 pounds,) and quickest to pitch tent that I ever owned...
    Sorry for waffling. I'm just love this tent.
    Its enabled me to backpack and cycle camp again after a thirty year gap.

    I can see why you like it! Love the awning pole trick! I'd defo rather the telemark than a trekking poke tent for strength. U have me a little torn now but still thinking for only 200g more I could get the scarp, then the crossing poles take it into 4 season (extra weight obvs). Really don't know now - you're gonna have to do a review on your new scarp 1!

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  2 роки тому

      The Lanshan 2 is a decent trekking pole tent - but not for 4 season use. Neither is this bad boy - 2/3 season use - to serve an ultralight purpose. The Scarp 1 is a different beast altogether, but if you're thinking of one - just bite the bullet and do it. Beware import duties though and VAT + 13% 😏

    I have been looking forward to this review, and as always you nailed it.
    I still have some concerns with regards to the sleeping length. It helped that you stretched out the way you did, but may I suggest that you use a sleeping pad next time?
    It might just be me, but I think it will give the viewer a more real world example to compare against our own needs
    As a 190 cm tall dude using a 9 cm thick pad to sleep on, I feel that most tents, especially the ultralight versions are often too small.
    Granted, using a thick winter pad might be a bit much in a 2/3 season tent. But it is just so comfortable :)
    But apart from that, I really enjoyed watching this review. It was thorough and informative, and a cup of coffee on me, will be coming your way soon.
    And if I end up purchasing the Telemark, or the Oppland, I will tell Nordisk it was all because of you.
    The only downsides to these tents, are the names. Both are from counties in Norway, but located in the «wrong» part of the country. If they ever release a tent called Rogaland, I will be the first to get one. But I digress
    Thanks again for this review.

    I have now owned this tent for a year and camped in all weathers, varying altitude and differing lengths of stay, I purchased from Taunton Leisure, Exeter, UK, in July 2021.
    This tent has a terrible problem with condensation, the ventilation is simply not good enough and you will wake each morning to the inside of the outer shell running with water. The whole point of this tent is to be lightweight and to carry when trekking. This means that when you come to packing for the next stage of your journey, you either separate the inner and outer portions and stow them separately in waterproof bags or roll them together, as intended, and accept that the liner will be wet, not damp, wet, when you come to strike camp that evening.
    The other problem associated with such a build up of water inside your sleeping area is the cold. I have no scientific basis to this theory but this is the coldest tent I have used and I can only conclude that the water is having a cooling effect. When you are cold you don't sleep and lack of sleep is not good when out in the wild.
    This review talks of cooking inside, given the poor ventilation I would exercise very real caution, particularly with any slow liquid burners such as Trangia.
    The shape only allows for one inflatable sleep mat, I have a narrow Exped Synmat and there is no room for a second, so please take this into consideration if you are thinking of using for 2.
    I believe a tent must provide shelter from the elements, by keeping you warm and dry, the design of the Telemark means more moisture inside, in any conditions, than on the outside after a storm.
    I have spoken with the supplier and manufacturer about the condensation issue but the response is that this is a side effect of the materials used.
    For £500 I expect more, sorry Nordisk.
    Amendment 17.09.22 - My sincere apologies to MCM Outdoors. I have not owned this model since July '21 but the Telemark 2 LW, which is the single door option and I am unable to recall a catenary or curved stitch in the head end.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for sharing your experience of the Nordisk Telemark 2.2LW
      I can only comment with my own experience of this tent and observations in response to what you have written.
      I have never experienced condensation issues with the tent - it has two vents and two doors which can be zipped further down as required - the ventilation is ample for this size of tent. There is also a slight catenary cut along the flysheet at the head end - which also allows for air to enter the vestibule areas.
      I have also never experienced water inside of the sleeping area of the tent - which is a separate inner tent.
      The ventilation is more than ample for cooking - which I have done, without issue; on countless occasions. I would never advise using a liquid fuel stove inside a tent, regardless of size or material used in its construction. Any cooking inside a tent, requires caution.
      The inner can be widened to allow for two sleeping mats - obviously pad width varies depending on the particular model you intend to use.
      Condensation is an unavoidable aspect of physics - it has nothing whatsoever to do with the materials used - and everything to do with temperature differential between two areas, meeting on a surface. I have used PU tents, which suffer from condensation - therefore it is simply not true that the flysheet material of this tent (siliconised nylon), 'causes condensation'. It can be alleviated by more airflow and of course a cotton tent, in theory allows for quicker evaporation of condensation - but it will still happen if the conditions are right.
      Your comments are subjective to your particular experiences of this tent - to which I respectfully disagree based on using this tent in various different weather conditions.
      Thanks for your input, Chris

    This is a really good video and allows you to see the tent in great detail with more information provide that the average tent manufacturers own productions. You have hit on all the positives of this tent but as user for the last 12 months I have a slightly different opinion.
    The tents main selling points are its weight, pack size and the space inside for a single occupant and accompanying kit. If you are completing multi day hikes the above are exactly what you want from a tent. The build quality and materials are generally all first rate with no corners cut. Its easy and quick to set up even for a first-time user.
    Before purchasing the tent, I read the reviews with users experiencing condensation but as this was mainly with the single door version, I thought the extra door and vent with the 2.2 would go some way to solve this.
    As I used the tent my view of the views became mixed. In the right conditions its excellent with all the advantages listed above making the tent exactly what I wanted. As conditions change then some of the disadvantages became apparent.
    Condensation is still an issue, in decent weather with one door open / part open (or even two) no problem. If the weather turns and you have to hunker down, then you’re getting condensation on the inside of the flysheet. This happens with all tents but is excessive with the Telemark.
    Its very flappy. Again, not an issue in decent weather but once it turns the tent flaps a lot. The advantages the lightweight materials used, that is one of the tents main selling points works against it here. All tents flap in the wind to some extent but this is excessive compared to tents I have used previously. The problem here is that the fly sheet is constantly hitting the tent inner. Add the condensation issue and you’re getting wet.
    The tent floor is lightweight as expected to keep weight down but looks easy to damage so you have to choose you camp spot carefully. As a precaution I bought the ground sheet, but this addition begins to dent the weight advantages this tent gives you. This may be a little over caution on my part, but I was wary of the floor being punctured.
    It’s a marketed as a three-season tent but it has some 4 season features that do not benefit the user. For example, the fly comes right down to the floor. Great in foul weather but my view is overall this tent is not suitable for poor (I am not talking Scotland in January but a British March or October in the lakes) conditions. This restricts ventilation and adds to the condensation problem.
    In my opinion this is an April - September tent. Multiday hikes in generally decent weather its great. The problem is the price. I got mine with the ground sheet for £460.00. An alternate three season tent, slightly heavier (1.5kg ish) with better ventilation but more robust when the weather tuns can be found for well under half of what I paid for the Telemark. The extra 300-400 grams over the Telemark weight (with groundsheet) would be worth it for the cost saving alone never mind the other benefits related to condensation and stability.
    It’s a specialized item, I would say the average hiker in the UK out for long weekends etc. should think carefully before shelling out £400 - £500 unless speed and pack weight are the main priorities.

    I own the one-door version for two years now and like the tent in general. It is excellent for solo bicycle travelling due to its small size and weight. It stands heavy autumn storms and keeps you dry even after two days being pitched in heavy rain.
    The problems have been outlined in the comments: A lot of condensation due to restricted air flow. When pitching it under trees it is not that bad. The inner tent has only two triangle mesh windows and the outer tent is flush to the ground, so there is not much circulation, but keeps you quite warm. In the morning the foot side of the inner tent is wet and your sleeping bag easily becomes wet when turning around at night. I wrap my rain jacket around the lower sleeping bag to prevent a wet sleeping bag. In addition, the inner tent tends to stick at the outer tent which shows heavy condensation in the morning, even with maximum tension at the outer tent. But on the other side, it dries quickly. I have a microfiber cloth ready to quickly wipe it dry in the morning.
    I would not recommend using the sewn-in bag for packing. You will have to fold the tent with and through the open zip. Folding a soaking wet tent with an open zip results in a wet inner floor when pitching it up the next day. With zip closed the floor will be also wet, but not that bad. I prefer folding it with zip closed, so the zip cannot damage anything. It easily fits in the provided bag.

    I have the 1P-version of this tent, and definitely I can say I like it, its a (mostly) smart construction, and I regularely use it. But there are points they have messed up somewhat in my opionion, and were neglected in this review:
    Footprint: The floor of the tent is so thin that I hardly dare to use it without the footprint. Therfore you may add the weight of the footprint to the tents weight (300! g for the 1P-version, slightly more for the 2P-version I guess). As you have mentioned, the footsprints straps are not exactly a smart construction. They are 1. massive (what for?) and 2. hardly long enough to connect to the tents pegs. I guess I will cut these off and replace them with some normal, LONGER cord.
    Magnetic door tab: Who will close it when you are inside the tent? Usually it doesnt close by itself. I have tried closing it from inside but no chance.
    Height of the foot area: As you have demonstrated, its just high enough if you are not using a mat. Using an air mat will add about 6 to 9 cm in height. Then any person taller than about 160 cm will definitely touch the tents inner AND outer fabric when lying on its back. I have experienced it, the sleeping bag definitely gets wet in when there is condensation. Some kind of semicircle-construction of that foot area would be perferable. However, in my opinion most comparable tents are even worse in this matter.
    Be aware that this tent is not made for strong winds, thats not a complaint, just a fact.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, I didn't say the tent was made for strong winds - I state it is 2-3 season which it is.
      Re the door fasteners, I'm not sure what you mean - I close them, when I'm inside the tent - they're magnetic - it doesn't matter what side of the door you're on - magnets are magnets.
      Re the groundsheet, it's made of heavier material than the fly so I don't quite agree with your point here.
      The one person variant isn't really comparable with this particular model. Thank you for watching though.

    Very comprehensive review. But a little light on the negatives. I have the two man version with one door. Otherwise it's the same tent.
    I've used it extensively hiking in Scotland in May as well as on Dartmoor in June. I like the tent. It is very light, easy to pitch and offers a lot of space for the solo camper. But I would add the following caveats: It needs to be pitched with the short panel facing the wind. Otherwise, even in light rain and wind, the long panel sags and water then collects in an ever increasing pool. This makes the outer skin sag onto the inner lining and condensation follows. This can make the foot of the sleeping bag very wet.
    As has been pointed out the height of the tent is too low at each end if you are using an airmat such as the Big Agnes Insulated Axl (a comfortable, very light mat). This lifts your nose very close to the roof of the tent and if (as advised) it is wet and windy (as it often is in Scotland), you get wet as the outer panel the inter lining into your face.
    Essentially, this otherwise very good tent needs a re design where the height of the tent is raised by (say) 15 centimetres. This would give more height in the tent (in itself a good thing) and also accommodate the inevitable billowing of the material in conditions that are typical in the seasons it is designed for.

      Thanks for sharing your views of your version. Tents with one pole only and large panels will always be at the mercy of the wind to some degree as there is simply less supporting structure. Luckily, I've never had any pooling of water on the many camps I've used this on. I do have to get out and re tension the corner guys due to the silnylon absorbing water - but if you keep it taught, it shouldn't ever be an issue. Cracking bit of kit for the weight - very technical yes and definitely not for strong winds - thanks for watching & ATB

      @@MCMOutdoors I do make the guys (and thus the fabric) as taught as possible. But it is the nature of the material used on the shell that stretches and billows in the wind (just look at the Nordisk wind tunnel video on their site). I disagree that all single hoop tents suffer this problem. The Zephyros 2 Wind Country tent (I also have) is a single hoop tent and does not billow in the wind. It has central props at the head and toe of the tent that 'steeple' the shell so avoiding water collecting in a wind well. The shell fabric is also stretches less. However, the Zephyros is nigh on 700gms heavier than the Nordisk. This makes it a compelling choice for lightweight hikers. Users just have to be aware of the caveats in pitching and Nordisk might take note and consider how to mitigate this shortcoming in future designs.

    I have the Telemark 2 (same tent, but only one door), with footprint. Few of my observations for use on bike-trips: The inner tent should have been a few cm higher at the foot-end: I'm 1.86cm and have shoe size 44. If I use my summer sleeping bag, I just about touch the inner tent when laying on my back. With a thicker sleeping bag, this is almost unavoidable.
    Take care with the 4 poles at the corners: when biking, everything vibrates, and they can work themselves out of their loops and punch a hole in the tent. Happend to me. I fixed the tent (easy with a bit of silicone and the supplied bit of spare silnylon), and sewn the pole-pockets shut. Now I just bring an extra bit of tent pole.
    I removed the straps of the footprint, and instead use a loop of elastic cord, which (permanently) fits in four of the same plastic snappers that attach the inner tent to the outer tent. The loops also attach around the ends of the tent pole, so I can pitch everything in one go. I can fit tent plus footprint all in the stuff sack. The poles and pegs are packed separately. Don't want another hole in the tent.

    • @ReneDamkot
      @ReneDamkot 11 місяців тому

      @@MCMOutdoors I used some thin elastic (the kind you find inside tent poles to keep them together). This just fits through the plastic hook that attaches inner to outer tent. It sits on top of the rubber that attaches the inner tent to that same hook.

    Hi, I have used my 2.2 quite a few times and I agree with your plus points. I cannot achieve the marvellous uprightness at the corners which you show. Consequently the inner meets the outer v easily and I need to spend more time drying everything in the morning. Also, its a noisy tent if there is a breeze or more. However, if you want lightweight, there's going to be noise I guess.

      It's a great tent for the right conditions and application - requires a bit more effort to maintain a taught pitch when the air becomes damp, but it's not a hassle. 2 / 3 season use - so depends on the weather conditions you expect - but an outstanding shelter for the weight - especially with the two entrance / exits

    I’ve used a larger fluorescent yellow rip-stop stuff sack for the tent - I use the original stuff sack to hold the pole.

      Two very different tents - the Fjallräven is said to be 4 season, the Nordisk 2 / 3 - although both light - the Nordisk would be the one to choose if weight and packability are your priority and also not aiming to camp in very bad conditions, whereas the Fjallräven would be the one to choose for fouler weather and all year round camping. Nordisk comes in at just a shade over 1kg which is great. Both are fantastic tents and although similar in appearance, are definitely built with different things in mind. Hope this helps.

      @@MCMOutdoors yes i know it's a slightly different model but it's based on the same tent. Difference is the Telemark 2 has 1 door. However i did some research after my condensation issues and it's a very well known concern with these tents. Infact Nordisk advise you pitch the feet end into the oncoming wind to aid ventilation, this helped slightly but still a problem.
      My point about reviews from influencers that get given freebies is most folk take the positive weighted views with a pinch of salt as you'd get no more freebies if you slated them 😂

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  2 роки тому +2

      Being based on the same tent doesn't really take into consideration the fact there is an entire other door, plus vent - so it's very different, maybe that's why I've never had any issues with condensation in this particular model due to these very different things. Positive weighted views is another way of saying 'bias', which as I explained in the video - I was not obliged to say anything positive about this tent. I have over 15 different tents now from various manufacturers, therefore I'm not really bothered about getting "freebies" as you put it as I don't need any more gear - as such, the integrity of my channel and trust I've built up with my viewers is far more important than an extra free tent that I don't actually need. ATB pal :-)
