Flying the DJI Inspire 1 Quadcopter with Adam Savage

  • Adam has received his new DJI Inspire 1 quadcopter, so we take it to a remote location outside the city to test it out! This quad has the ability to split flight and camera controls between two operators, so Adam and Norm work together to capture a few aerial shots with the Inspire 1's 4K camera. Let us know if you'd like to see more videos like this!

    Now its 2018, and i was fortunate to buy an expertly maintained Inspire 1 V2 recently with the X3 camera for $900, it was videos like this that steered me, thanks Adam! Yes i could have bought a better Phantom 4 Pro but i wanted the Inspire, it looks more professional.

    For professional 2-person filming, there might be a need to have a lower-quality "pilot-view"-camera on the drone, pointing forward with maybe some small manual adjustment up and down before taking off to give better spacial awareness for the pilot when you lose sight of the drone.
    Now they need to rely on the camera-persons view that can be pointing in a wrong direction. It might not be a problem for filming scenery, but if you're filming sports or other unique occurrences, it might be worth the extra investment.
    Maybe have be on separate channel that can be put picture-in-picture on the control-rigs, but separate it so it doesn't record onto the main-film...

    • @TheANTOMATE
      @TheANTOMATE 9 років тому +6

      Should have a separate display with the pilot view, still really important for pilot to be able to consider shot composition.

    these tools have made so much possible for amature film makers, think about the shots and angles they got in this video, just 15 years ago shots like that wouldn't have been possible without renting cranes or helicopters, now any amature film student can save up $1,500 - $3,000, buy one of these and get amazing aerial shots not only for a one or two time shoot, but for ever!! soo cool!!

      You can program this unit to take off, navigate way points at different altitudes and return to where it started or where the remote is located and start the whole flight with a press of a button. That's a drone (UAV) albeit a small one.

    • @lethbrp
      @lethbrp 9 років тому +4

    Now that's a fun morning, Chang apparently working on his chase plane skills. Seems like it's hard to get a bad shot. The hardest thing is "giving yourself up to the machine." Where am I in 3-space? if you can lose yourself, you're there. Or do a lot more planning ahead. As you might for a "pro" use of two operators.
    Instead of chest harnesses-- if you're going to just stand there-- get music stands. Or a card table and chairs.

  • @stevendobson805
    @stevendobson805 8 років тому

    Hey Adam when you fly with two people, one controlling the camera and the other flying, you use two cameras that way the flyer doesn't lose his orientation like you did. When you fly closer to buildings that might be the difference between a crash or a close call.

    Snake River Prototyping is coming out with high quality ND/CP filters for the inspire in the next week or two.They are great! I got a test unit. They aren't the cheap colored glass of the DJI filter, or the Polar Pro junk that's out there now. These will allow you to shoot at the proper shutter speed (which is twice the frames per second) and they won't color or degrade your image.

    The images are beautiful, I just wish they were even aware of some of the basic flight guidelines. Its pretty clear they are in awe of the machine but oblivious to the important ins-and-outs of it. Very similar to the "tested builds" series with will in the shop.
    No line of sight at all, and yes its much different than racing a micro quad through buildings. At least they were in an industrial park rather than a high traffic area.

  • @vidmon

    Best hands on video of the Inspire 1 in action I've seen! As with most video I've seen using the Inspire I and other quads the video is never smooth like the pans I get from a good hand held video camera even at low 60 fps. How can this be corrected or can it with the included camera? 1080P or 4K is great for sill motion shots but for real world professional use what good is it if the quality of video suffers from a jumping/skipping frame look? I have asked this question on several forums but no one seems to have an answer or cares to respond. So much attention has been published about how cool quads are but there doesn't seem to be anything out there about getting smooth video or if it's even possible with stock cameras that the Inspire 1 ships with. Adam if anyone can address this issue it would be you. Thanks for addressing this issue.

    The footage is bit jerky because the pans were too quick. There is a tool for that on his transmitter, and he needs to lower his exponential on his Yaw. Also the gimbal can be slow down so it doesn't move so quickly. This really improves your videography. Adam is a very smart person and I'm sure has figured out all of the settings by now.

    They should add a little scrolling compass thing to the UI on the pilot's screen, to show where the camera is pointed in relation to the front of the drone, that doesn't show up in the footage. Something at the top or bottom, that spins around like the compass in Skyrim.

    I see it has one camera which can be operated, sort of an eye of the pilot. Not sure what does iPad application show (I guess camera feed only). It would be nice to have a HUD there too. This way you could get the actual heading (compass), altitude and, importantly, which way is the camera looking. I guess you get it as you practice more, but still.
