Been listening to My Sweet Lord for decades now. George Harrison will live on forever through this most beautiful piece of music he created. Seeing your joy just listening to it is like hearing it for the first time. Peace be with you...
I would play this Master piece to my Mother as she was nearing leaving this earth and She would raise her hands towards the heavens and just enjoy it. I get teary eyed when I hear this beautiful song! Long may you live Mom!
It was actually conceived as a multireligious hymn. George was grown in Christian religion, but since 1965 he turned his faith to embrace the Hindu one. On his posthumous record's cover you can see a little cross next to the OM sign. Which means he always searched God in any possibile form and with any possibile name, no matter if you're singin' alleluiah, or hare krshna. That's very typical of the Beatles : never meant to divide, but to make your own thoughts grow, anyway. There is something magic on a young woman like you moving while listening to this song, 50 years after it was released. I'm sure 50 years from now, there will be another girl feeling the same surprise and delight - and then another, and then another one. That's the pure magic of the Beatles.: neverending, even when they're no more among us. Greetings from Italy
I would say he graduated from Christian to Hinduism. However, 'hinduism' is a blanket term for several religions. His actual religion is: "sanatan-dharma" as per the Bhagavad Gita ("Song of God"). Sanatan-dharma recognises the eternal relationship between the individual-soul and God (Super-soul) as transcendent to ones beliefs and so an appeal to God can be in any language or tethered to a belief-system, it matters not, God hears and responds to the sincere soul.
I remember reading that George was asked about the Hari Krishna chant in this song and he said something like "it doesn't matter what you call God, just call him." I've always loved that. God bless you George, you're forever missed.❤ Thank you for choosing this song dear Sarah, you've made an old Beatles fan very happy. I adore this song, it always makes me feel so happy that I cry.🥰 I've subscribed and look forward to seeing your videos, sending hugs from a chilly Scotland
George Harrison was a Hindu but his religion is actually "sanatan dharma" (eternal religion) as per the Bhagavad Gita ("Song of God"). He can say "halleluah" and "hare krishna" as an appeal to the Supreme Being. He understands all sentients have a relationship with God which transcends ones beliefs. One can appeal to the Lord in whatever language and in whatever belief system one is tethered to.
Great song. It harkens me back to the 70's with Hare Krishnas at the airport soliciting $. One time a hare Krishna young lady pinned a small flower on my shirt. I said thanks & walked off. She chased me down & took the flower back cuz I didn't give her $. I told her it's better to give than receive but to no avail. I then took a jet to Honolulu. When I disembarked a young lady put a Lei of flowers (circle of aloha) around my neck (no charge).
George Harrison embraced the Hare Krishna tradition (particularly japa-yoga chanting with beads) and became a lifelong devotee. He was a vegetarian, on religious grounds, from 1968 until his death.
Sarah is so sweet. I love watching her videos. They make this 61 year old happy. I have a daughter in the US and I unofficially adopted another in Brasil and Canada so I can adopt her too!
Thank you for listening to this wondaful song. Most of us want to hear and see our sweet lord. George nailed the lyrics on this heartfelt song. We are all searching for what is out there.
It sounds beautifully shiny and brand new every time I hear it. George Harrison had a way of writing melody that made you think you already knew the song, you just hadn't heard it.
George was SUED for accidentally stealing the entire melody form the 1963 hit "He's So Fine" by the chiffons. Look it up....He lost. It cost him big bucks...otherwise he wrote some very fine tunes.
It was 1970. I was 4 years old. I was in a car with my mother. A dedication was made by a girl who's fiance was serving in Viet Nam. She said ":I really want to see you!" , to her guy. My mother started crying and had to pull over.
Love your reactions. Thank you for sharing them. And for playing such wonderful tracks ........ all a long time ago for me. Incredible how quickly it has all really passed. Nice to go back down memory lane but also to see a young person's take on these.
Such a beautiful song, almost makes me believe...and makes me sad whenever I find that I can't quite. 😢 A similarly themed song by Harrison (as a Beatle) is "Long Long Long". That lyric "Now I can see You, _be_ You" gets me every time.
Even though John and Paul recieved most of the recognition of The Beatles its George's songs that really moved me. Like Something/While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Fav) etc.
So glad to see that My Sweet Lord moves you the same way it did, and has, moved me for 50 years. It is indeed a very personal devotion to the Lord, who abides within us all.
One of the best songs by my personal favorite Beatle, an anthem. There was a tribute concert a year after his death (Concert for George), check out this song from that concert, it’s amazing 🎉 🎊
I've always loved this song. To me, it's universal to whichever 'God' you believe in. Krishna, Hindu god of protection, compassion, tenderness & love is really in no conflict IMHO to my 'Cathlolic' God! Universal message of love - and our fundamental understanding that our time here on Earth is finite - we're all hoping for an 'end' where we are united with our creator - in whichever form that takes! Cheers.
later in his career from the album cloud nine he does a song called "this is love" that record also has "we was fab" "ive got my mind set on you" lennon and mcartney get all the credit for songwriting but george wrote some of the beatles best and some great songs in his solo career and with the traveling wilburys
I tried to buy the single back in 86. I had to wait for it for six long weeks to be shipped from England to Germany. I went to the store every single day and God was I happy when I finally held it in my hands and could play it on my old record player…. Who could ( in times of spotify) imagine my deep happiness and my sheer luck I felt; what a great song by a fine man 🕉️
I glad you came back to him. He has so of music treasured songs. Let's enjoy and thank you. This was a special christen faith that he sings about that time.
This tune was on George Harrison's first post-Beatles solo album, a triple called All Things Must Pass. It went platinum three times and was the first #1 album after the breakup. George's signature slide guitar is prominent on this and throughout the album. "Can't wait to see you Lord" is Harrison's address to Lord Krishna, but we used to sing it in Jr. Choir in church--all hallejulahs of course!
Fantastic song from a very underrated Beatle, I had the privilege of seeing the Beatles live in 1962, I was docked at Liverpool and introduced to the Cavern club by a Liverpudlian shipmate. George Harrison lived near me at Henley on Thames, I often pass the gates of his property and think nostalgically of him, I believe his wife and son Dhani still live there.
George was born and raised in Christian faith. He came to study other spiritual traditions, including Hindu traditions. His spiritual quest informed the later songs he wrote while still a member of the Beatles (check out “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”) and most of his post-Beatles music. He read and greatly admired Swami Vivekananda, a visionary of the Ramakrishna Order of Vedanta. One of the teachings of Vedanta is “Truth is One. Sages know it by various names.” So your observation that My Sweet Lord was written in the sentiment that perhaps God is just all one thing and it is only we people who see differences is spot on! I believe that was one of George’s messages in that song. There is a great music video done by his son Dhani and wife Olivia about My Sweet Lord. Available on UA-cam. Check it out. Also see Martin Scorsese documentary about George, Living In The Material World. 🕉️
THIS IS THE ONLY REACTION OF THIS SONG THAT IVE SEEN THAT ACTUALLY REMINDED ME, HIT ME THE WAY IT HIT ME THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS such a wonderful feeling to be vibing with someone
Such a beautiful song, and I loved your reaction, you were really in the song. George was involved with Eastern religion, I forget the details but I'm sure the background singers reflected that. And those background singers, wow they were special.
One of my all-time favourite songs. I was 7 when it came out, and I remember listening to it on the radio all through the next few years. It is poignant that he could easily have been singing about Jesus, as it is well documented that he very likely converted to Christianity before he died. I love the way the song found its way into the MCU via Guardians of the Galaxy II.
I've heard the song a million times...n it was a first again with this beautiful woman and her finding all the names are not important to the feeling of love for eachother n eachother's beliefs.
Takes me back 50 plus years when this first came out. all I could claimed back then was the music I loved but yeah George Harrison was the best of The Beatles .I never really cared for the Beatles together.
I really like your interpretation of the song. I always felt the song represented one's personal relationship with God regardless of one's religion. Sarah, your expression of how you felt listening to this song was refreshing.
Those opening luscious guitar sounds were produced by Phil Spector using a new technique he called "The Wall of Sound". Listen to how it fills the whole room. I first heard this song in 1970 through the rear shelf speaker in my best friends Buick Skylark while driving around as teenagers.
Each of the Beatles reached through and then beyond what most people’s religions, in their sectarian, limited ways, call “spirituality”. Their musical brains naturally sensed something far better and more beautiful and embracing than all that in us, whether it’s even the presence of a “god” or not. Good for them. And no wonder they made such unforgettable, lovable, profoundly human music so easily. ❤
George Harrison MEMBER OF ICONIC BAND BEATLES MY SWEET LORD 1970. LOVE HIS GUITAR RIFT HERE! NOTICE DIFFERENT LANGUAGES! ALL THE BEATLES DID WELL SOLO!!!
Thank you for doing these videos. I know your reactions are genuine because you exude real emotional responses in your physical expressions, and not to mention quite charming.
They have real nice songs the Beattles rock songs ballads great meaningful inspirational songs like Elvis as well. The Beattles and Elvis the greatest.
Wakan Tonka- is what the Lakota call God and recognize as being the same higher power. It is foolish to put down any religion that just doesn't use the same name as you do, instead embrace the fact that others pray! Thank You for the reaction Beautiful Lady, You are appreciated. With Love and Respect, You are in my prayers Hoka Hey
George was a very spiritual Hindu since the Beatles went to india in '68, Harrison once said,"The living thing that goes on, always has been, always will be. I am not really George, but I happen to be in this body." Phil Spector was again responsible for his famous "wall of sound" on this record. He was also one of the "back-up" singers. Unfortunately, Spector later became a homicidal maniac and died in prison.
This is one of my favorite songs and is in my playlist, but every time I listen to this song, the question that haunts me is who is his "Lord?" I know who my Lord is.

Great theft, yesss. George was a weak guitarist and an average singer who happened to be in the greatest band.

Yes, Concert for George with Billy Preston singing. The BEST!
The names of God chanted to bring all together. Sarah seems to have gotten it. George taught us so much about how to love each other.

George was the quiet, spiritual Beatle. It's only fitting that he write what is arguably the most spiritually uplifting song ever written.
@Sarah- This is George Harrison of The Beatles but My Sweet lord is him as a solo singer.
listen to the Chiffons and he is so fine - and you know where the inspiration came from!
No. You are wrong.
Actually, Harrison said the inspiration was the Edwin Hawkins Singers' rendition of "Oh Happy Day".
