One of George Harrison's quotes when asked about the names of the Lord & God he used in his lyrics of this song, he replied, *“It does not matter what you call Him, just call Him” That quote helped me* ❤ ❤ ❤

I'm going on 70 years old. The day I heard a classmate singing this song my 10th grade homeroom class, I was struck, covered in goosebumps. I don't know what it was, or what happened, but I will remember that day as if it was yesterday. Later in life I came across a copy of the "Bhagavad Gita, AS IT IS," which I later came to find out was the same translation that Harrison studied.
There are two types of religion in the world:
1.) Prophecy: Islam, Christianity and Judaism
2.) Wisdom: Vedic Scriptures, Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, etc.
The Bhagavad Gita mentions God's name on every page, and speaks of 'spirit soul' to great extent, using scientific and philosophical analogies, etc.
I have yet to become famous and powerful, but I am still grateful on how studying the above song & book changed my life for the positive. I still get goosebumps and well up with tears almost every time I hear this song. Thank you.

George Harrison came from working class backround and was first of his family to get into grammar school, equivalent to modern day high school / secondary school. He found Indian religion around 1966 and started seriously study sitar. However he quit rehearsing around 1969 after the realisation that to fully understand Indian music would take years, pretty much the way Harrison himself started guitar in his teens. The master of the sitar, Ravi Shankar who taught Harrison has stated that Harrison showed true wisdom in it.

George was raised Catholic. He became interested in Eastern spiritualism and meditation around 1966. He often spoke on his beliefs and wanting to escape the cycle of death and rebirth. Upon his death, Olivia, his wife said that he "lit up the room when he left his body". I love George, miss him still.

I agree about Harrison being the best of the Beatles, certainly as a genuine man. The others may each have had their strengths, but George seemed to be the one that you would have wanted to know as a friend, not just as a pop star. And the Wilburys were a great star band, sadly cut short by the premature death of Roy Orbison, another great musician and gentle soul, who had one of the most amazing singing voices.

This song was a private prayer, but since the house was full of people for weeks, someone heard him playing and singing it and talked him into recording it. He was shocked when it went to #1.

If so, then Ringo served as the anchor, keeping the rest grounded and not taking it all too seriously. Alternately, I've read of a theory that for an ensemble cast, one featuring a father type, and a mother/priest/conscience, plus a problem-solving child and a comedic/creative child works best, with the "child" roles being capable of being filled by various characters. The example they used was Star Trek, with Kirk and McCoy filling the mother/father role, and Spock mostly filling the problem solver role and Chekhov the comedy, but Scotty could play either child role, too. I don't fully buy that, but that theory might hint at how perception back then shaped folks' view of their "roles".
My 2 cents, and yes, I know, the "theory" I cited doesn't qualify as an actual science theory, but such is the state of the language that I need to qualify that. *sigh*

I had only seen him as the young mop top, not the neared “hippy.” Listened to it over and over and over like only a young person can.

All of the Beatles got imo Eastern religions in the mid to lat 60s, but George took it very seriously. He was a pretty introspective man. My favorite Beatle.

George always struck me as the most spiritual of the Beatles. They all went through the then-trendy eastern spirituality and philosophy phase in the 1960s, but I don't really think it was anything more than an experimentation for the others, whereas George really seemed to be spiritually motivated and a genuinely gentle soul. Such a shame he died relatively young. His life was cut short after he and his wife were attacked in 1999 in their own home by a mentally ill man. Although Harrison officially died of cancer, there's a general consensus among those that knew him that the traumatic effects of the attack - when he was stabbed multiple times, suffered a punctured lung and nearly died - left him much weaker and caused a relapse, leading to return of the cancer he had previously fought off. He died less than two years after the attack, at only 58.

My absolute favorite song of George's and one of my favorites of all time. George had so much talent that it burst out with "All Things Must Pass". I cried when I heard he had passed. RIP George...you are sorely missed in this world.

It's so amazing/awesome how powerful music can be! A music lover since conception growing up with a music lover/performer for a father who played/listened to everything except maybe poka🤷🏿, I'd heard this for years playing while riding in the car, but I TRULY heard this for the first time while my father was playing the album one day while he was relaxing in our living room back in 1979 and it's just been ingrained in my soul ever since watching my father mentally emerse himself into it! *I didn't grasp Dad's explanation until almost 6yrs later, but I've been musically diverse since then!!

He was a member of The Beatles. They all took a break from music and went on a spiritual retreat. George really got more into it. He did a lot of humanitarian work up until his death. PS: check out the Tribute to him where Prince does a solo in While My Guitar gently weeps. 😊

George Harrison was definitely the most spiritual of the Beatles after they broke up.
He was influenced by Indian music and culture in the mid to late 60's, and it shows along with his spirituality in this song.
The Hallelujahs eventually go into the first twelve words of the Hare Krishna. The song ends with a Hindu prayer:
    Gurur Brahmā, gurur Viṣṇur
    gurur devo Maheśvaraḥ
    gurus sākṣāt, paraṃ Brahma
    tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ.
Which translated, "I offer homage to my guru, who is as great as the creator Brahma, the maintainer Vishnu, the destroyer Shiva, and who is the very energy of God."

George discovered Eastern and Indian philosophy while he was in the Beatles and strove very hard to live by those principles for the rest of his life. He was, and is, my favorite Beatle.

It's very hard to not marvel at the output of John and Paul who - let's be fair made some of the best songs in rock aside the time of the Beatles - but this song stands up there with them, after he passed the song was re-released and went to #1 again, not because he had just passed it is truly an exceptional song that deserves just as much praise as Imagine or Band on the Run gets and shows just how exceptional George was.

George was found guilty of "Subconscious Plagiarism" in Court, as "My Sweet Lord" is extremely similar to the Ronnie Mack Classic "He's so fine".
That doesn't take anything away from the fact that this song is SO ICONIC!
