      Smokey's garage was right across the street from Publix in Daytona Beach right on Riverside drive. I'll never forget seeing the sign when my mom drove me to school :
      Smokey's Garage
      Best damn garage in town
      And I bet it was true too.

    10:10 As someone who grew up around Petroleum, putting "Jet Fuel" in a race car engine will make *LESS* power. Its the equivalent of putting slow burning Kerosene (That's What Jet Fuel is!) or diesel fuel in your gasoline car, it will run like crap! - Now putting some sort of rocket fuel that has an oxidizer with it, or nitro-methane or something similar...THAT would make it faster!

    • @tony9146
      @tony9146 2 місяці тому +5

      @@misters2837 yep 👍 it’s like the people who think that fueling with a higher octane than their car is rated for will increase power. If anything you’ll be underpowered because your car doesn’t reach the necessary compression.

    • @misters2837
      @misters2837 2 місяці тому +6

      @@tony9146 Well, no, using a fuel with an overly high AKI (Octane) really doesn't "underpower" a car either, its just a waste of money. - Modern cars will pull timing if the AKI is too low (will lose power) regardless anyway. Putting 91 in a car rated for 87 is just a money waste.

      The rules were black and white even back then. The only thing that should have happened was a penalty to Marcus Ambrose- a stop and go or something like that. What Robbie did after- especially intentionally spinning Ambrose out of the lead and potentially involving other drivers in a crash- was completely unnecessary, unacceptable and childish. Robbie got exactly what he deserved with the suspension and fine. He acted like a spoiled brat both on and off the track and it’s exactly why he’s been kicked out of every major series he’s ever raced in.

    It wasn't 'Jet Fuel' that was found inside the intake manifold, Jet fuel (A/A1/B) is similar to diesel fuel, isn't in any way any sort of flame front modifier, or oxidizer and wouldn't give any competitive advantage in an engine optimized for 98 octane fuel.
    The substance used is still in debate but narrowed down to a few possibilities:
    1) Gelled Tolune (anti detonation agent, used in 1980's F1 turbo engines)
    2) 1,3,5 Trioxane (oxidizer, used in rocket propellent)
    3) Propylene Oxide (oxidizer, used in rocket propellant)
    4) Dinitrogen Pentoxide (oxidizer, used in rocket propellant)
    Wasnt 'sterno' as this was a known cheat
    Wasn't MeOH/Methanol reaction as no methanol was found in the fuel sample.
    Some say it was a viscosity modifier in the fuel but from NASCAR reports foind, this was not discovered in the fuel samples.

      That's because jet fuel is kerosene, and kerosene, like diesel, makes a gas engine run like crap if it's mixed into the gas, and not at all if too much or all is diesel. The better question would be, what kind of idiot would use jet fuel in a gas engine and expect it to run better. Now av gas, is a different story. Aviation fuel actually WOULD help. I'm almost convinced that "jet fuel" SHOULD have been reported as av-gas, or aviation fuel. Definitely NOT jet fuel though.

    Tbf to that Dale Jr win, you can watch the race and see that the field was spread out due to handling issues. It was an extremely unique race where no one was full throttle, save for Jr on the high line on the old surface. We may never see a race at Daytona like that again. Of course that doesn't mean something wasn't up with the car, but there's more to the story.

  • @Chris-st9mm

    I wish NASCAR let teams (and/or manufacturers) design and build their own cars so each car is at least slightly unique and therefore cars can legally be allowed to have and edge on one another. Since NASCAR is essentially a spec series I feel teams need to cheat to get an advantage. The whole point of competition is to innovative and gain that advantage. If teams can't do that then a spec series is boring and NASCAR is essentially a crap shoot

    What you didn't say when Cheater Chad was kicked out of the track, he sat in a camper outside on the camp ground, he wasn't supposed to be there either, and had constant communication with the pit crew still calling the shots and not the only time he did that. There's no bigger cheater than CC, he should've been banned from the sport. The sad part was NASCAR did their best to cheat for certain drivers, throwing that mysterious "hotdog wrapper" caution towards the end of the race to allow guys like Johnson, Gordon, the Busch brothers, Logano to catch up to the leader giving them a chance to win. Let's not forget their "special" rules or better double standards for those guys, speeding down pit row, Johnson gets to speed but Truex gets busted yet was going slower than Johnson in the same damn race. Martin called out NASCAR but was fined. They wanted to re-create Richard Petty and chose Johnson, they wanted a new Dale Sr and chose Kyle Busch. Busch is no Dale Sr, Sr didn't wreck a slower car on lap 5 to gain a spot, he just drove around him. He didn't wreck guys just to wreck them, he was beat and bounced early in his career because those guys didn't like how he would call guys out so when they hit him he hit back, he was just better at it than the others were.

    2:09 See, this right here is why I dont necessarily agree with only the crew chiefs getting busted over this stuff. Like Johnson MUST have realized what Knaus was saying there. He was definitely aware and on board. If a driver really is clueless then fine, but they should get suspended same as a crew cheif in this situation

    • @Ryukioses
      @Ryukioses Місяць тому

      Im sorry, there actually isn't much known about what made Nascar change the rules... I do know they beefed the frame up to make it stiffer, did some stuff with the suspension and when it entered the corner it would suck itself to the track and provide better traction.
      Gordon's crew chief or whoever designed the car didnt elaborate on how he bent the rules by reading between the lines.

    These two would have had dozens of private moments before that point to have that conversation. Knaus was screwing with everyone who believe this.
