Schrader has NEVER spoken publicly about what he saw and I personally don't believe he ever will. He is a dignified man and would never disrespect Dale's family like that
There is a video of Schrader speaking on the crash. He was visibly damaged. I watched the video, he didn't speak specifics but he absolutely spoke publicly but vaguely. If I remember correctly his exact words were "It wasn't good". Just because you never saw an interview doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
I watched it for a few more year's after the wreck. But it's not the same! That was truly the day that Nascar died! It hasn't been the same since! And it never will
"Never the same" because NASCAR was finally forced to join other racing forms and require more stringent safety equipment and procedures - like those required by even more potentially dangerous vehicles like Formula 1 cars. The very equipment and procedures Earnhardt disdained.
I remember going to an ARCA race at Kentucky Speedway, less than 6 months after Dale died. The race started, and on lap 3, the whole track became absolutely silent, except for the sound of the cars. And every fan, myself included, held their hands high, three fingers extended toward the sky. Every one of us stayed silent, our hands up, until the lap counter tuned over from 3 to 4. Tens of thousands of people came together without a word of discussion, without even knowing it was going to happen, all giving a silent, unplanned salute to a beloved lost legend. It was a really profound, emotional moment. Dale's passing left a hole in the sport that will never be filled.
Yes. I used to take my son. Who was ten then. To Pocono. Same thing. I still have the #3 commemorative hats we bought that day. Also. I used to park in the infield. Theres an infield SCCA track that comes out onto the main track at the beginning of the main straight and goes the wrong way. Thats how they had us exiting. I had a black Yukon GT with aftermarket exhaust. I laid back until traffic got way ahead and I nailed it... coming out of the infield onto the main track foot to the floor...throwing dust in the air... all the drunks in the bleachers there stood up and were cheering... Standing O for the black GMC... My son will remember that for the rest of his life...
Schrader did talk to the winner of that Daytona 500 race, Michael Waltrip. Waltrip asked him about Dale. All Schrader said was it's not good. Mikey didn't get to celebrate the win that Dale, Sr had predicted he would have that day.
I remember that day all too well. My Direct TV receiver had gone south so my girlfriend and I watched the race at a local sports bar in Greensboro NC. We saw the wreck and and the finish, and didn't really think too much about it. I had seen Dale in crashes this bad or worse before and he had turned out fine. Then about 7PM or so, one of my friends called me and broke the news of Dale's death. It hit me like a sledgehammer. I was a big NASCAR fan, and a HUGE Dale Earnhardt fan. I was devastated. I kept watching NASCAR though because of Dale Jr. When he retired I basically quit watching races because of all the rule changes. It became too watered down, and not entertaining enough anymore. RIP Dale Earnhardt.
Dude, YES! But it wasn’t just what you said; there was a much larger wreck earlier in the race, where it seemed SURELY a there would be serious injuries, but there weren’t. So when Dale crashed, it initially seemed like no big deal. Until it was. RIP Dale Earnhardt.
Yeah, how dare NASCAR start requiring safety equipment that other forms of racing had been requiring for a decade or more - equipment that probably would have saved Earnhardt's life.
Yep....I saw the crash and the finish and hopped in my car to go to the store. I found out Dale had died on the way home and had to pull over to cry. Nascar died that day. I don't watch anymore.
Schrader was on Dale Jr's show and Dale said how much respect he has for Schrader for not saying ANYTHING to ANYONE about that day of what he saw. He could of made lots of money if he was that type of person.
I met Kenny in 2017 at my local track sporting my #3 merch, i wanted sooo badly to ask him about that day, but i didn't, i shook his hand he took photos with my lil guy, very humble gentleman, had a conversation with him we never felt rushed, and he is one of my favorite wheel men, he still does apperances at my local dirt track, he is a true legend of #NASCAR & anthing with wheels & a power plant. #3 🖤 #36 #8 #88
I was there in the top row of the Oldfield section that day. Being a nurse, my observation of the accident, Ken’s body language and the absence of Dale climbing out of his car said it was not just serious but fatal. I knew he was in serious trouble. I knew he was dead, then the blue tarp came out and it was over. I still can see that accident in a replay over and over again.
Me and my girl were up there all week. Watched some dirt races at Volusia and some pavement races at New Smyrna then went and watched the Twins at Daytona. Went home and had a big ass steak dinner watching the race on Sunday. Could not believe the wreck killed him. Never did eat that steak that day. Was a dirt racer back then and drove as hard as I ever drove trying to win it for DALE. He was a incredible inspiration for all of us stockcar drivers. Sure miss him. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
I was watching the race on TV When he hit the wall I knew he was gone,it was just a different looking wreck, and then the blue tarp. That confirmed my fears..I was devastated,Have never watched another race since...I can honestly say,I loved him,met him in Jennerstown,Pa.
I always thought Dale was looking to his left to see his son was still leading and was going to win ,when he hit the wall . The act of his head turned and his helmet weight spun his head forward and broke his neck. He didn't have a Haunse device on I believe
Going from 160MPH to Zero. Life is fickle and we better live like there is no tomorrow because eventually there will be. That man lived his life to the fullest and is a testament to everyone to go for what you love. Dale loved racing and he went for it.
I remember an interview where it was said that blood was seen coming out of Dale's ears and that's when they knew it was very serious if not fatal. If u remember that race,he was blocking for his team with Michael Waltrip up front and Dale Jr in 2nd. I often thought,if only he didn't try to block and just moved over,he'd still be here today. But that wasn't Dales style and he wanted his team to finish 1,2,3 is how i took it. He died doing the thing he loved the most but that didn't take the sting out of it in any way shape or form. I'm a big guy and older(in my 60s) but when ever that accident is replayed i tear up to this day and that was in 2001. Best that ever lived in my opinion, the black #3 should be retired. There is simply no one skilled enough or fierce enough to have the honor of driving it.
I may be mistaken but didn't Dale own the team that Dale Jr. and Waltrip drive for, and Dale Sr was still driving for Richard Childress? If that is the case then conflict of interest is played a role in his death
The only people Kenny has ever told what he saw that day was Dale's family, and the is the way it will always be. Kenny Schrader is an honorable and humble friend of the Earnhardt family, so if you ever see a video saying Schrader tells what he saw that day, IT IS A LIE!!!
Right! Just like this video! It's not a bad video but I picked it because it says that Kenny tells the chilling truth about what he saw that day. The chilling truth is that this video is a lie just to sucker viewers into watching it!!!
Ken was on Dale's Dirty Mo podcast and ended it with a short message to Kenny saying that he is glad that he never shared what he saw that day. Kenny is 65 and races 40+ races a season. It's in their blood to race.
At the time of his death my company was doing remodel work at Dale's house in Jupiter Fl. Dale was a very kind man who would always take a minute to say hello and tell everyone to have a good day. A true legend!! RIP sir❤
I lived and worked in Charlotte during the time that Dale died...I wasn't a nascar fan at all. But the cloud of grief that covered the entire city for over a week was palpable. No matter where you went, everyone was in mourning like their own family had died. It was crazy.
If he would have been wearing the the neck and head restraint like he told JR to wear would have lived and the unimproved seat belt in his car he would have lived!
@carlbergh3952 I will never forget either of these races! I never thought I'd see the day every pit crew member and every single driver would congratulate Dale Earnhardt!! He would get so freaking close to winning that race every year, every year was heartbreaking until it was finally his year! RIP Dale! Gone to race in a better place!
Ken Schrader an absolute first class human being and driver. His life changed and was never the same. He drove with what could be seem to be as ghosts in the car. Tony Stewart suffered the same fate after the accident that took the life of another driver in the Sprint car series. I can't imagine how either one felt after those tragedies.
Back in the day I was a huge NASCAR fan (Davey Alison, Bill Elliott) I was watching the race live. I didn't like Earnhardt at all - but I was heartbroken when he was killed.
Im glad I saw this. Cuz I felt the same way. Dale was always my Kyle Busch or Jimmie Johnson. I always cheered for him to get beat cuz he was the guy that seemed to win every week. I watched it live and cuz one of my guys didnt win that day I turned it off right after the checkered flag. Didnt hear about Dale till the next day. I was extremely surprised and unexpectedly sad that the guy I cheered against was gone. It didnt seem real
It was the same way with me. I never really liked Earnhardt. But the thing was, you didn't have to like him, but you didn't have much other choice but to respect him. I watched the race live, saw the crash, and I just didn't think it was that bad of a Crash. Was driving and listening to the radio a little bit after the race and heard he'd died. Shocked doesn't totally describe it.
My dad was a WWII combat soldier. Like many vets returning home, he looked for something more than domestic bliss and found it in car racing. He and his brother pooled their meager funds and started racing in Sportsman Series races all over New England. I was with then from the age of 6. Hiding in the wrecker they used as a hauler whenever a pit official was near. Racing was something I shared with them. Earnhardt was his favorite driver decades later. Every chance I had , I would make the drive down to my mom and dad’s house to watch a Sunday race with him. After my mom passed, I made the trip every Sunday. One Christmas, I got him a Dale Earnhardt jacket which he wore everywhere! In 1990, I bought tickets for the first NASCAR race at New Hampshire International Speedway and I stood in line for Dale the sign his jacket. A year after Dale died, my dad passed. He was buried with that jacket on. I haven’t watched a NASCAR race since that day.
I'm sorry for your loss! My story is not as sad but sorta same.I got married when we were 19(too young)we lasted til 95.Thing was no matter how bad we were getting along Sunday we could sit and watch a race and pull for Dale.I too no longer watch or care now that he is gone
My children would tell you that the first time they ever heard their father cry was the day the Dale died. To them, it was a turning point in their lives. We literally gave up NASCAR because it just wasn't the same without him.
Dale's passing affected a lot of NASCAR fans, not just his fan base but a lot of others too. His racing style made the other drivers step up their game on the track as well.Nascar was great then not so much anymore. Dale wasn't my favorite but he was the best of my lifetime.
I was there that day and it still rips my heart out to this day. I was a lot younger than and I remember leaving the track just in a daze. It only took us about 20 minutes to get home from the track. And as soon as I got home, I turned the TV on and waited for news about it. An hour later after it happened, they confirmed it... My heart just sank.
My wife and I were at the race that day. I was watching the number 3 blocking for Jr. and Waltrip. When he hit the wall I had my binoculars right on him. After walking back to our Motorhome outside the track we will never forget the silence in the campground. So many grown men in tears. My wife hugging one person that was having such a hard time. Racing will never be the same for so many. Truly biggest loss. And I am a Jeff Gordon fan. But the races between them were iconic. And their off track business ventures, most people would never know.
I went to the Daytona 500 and Pepsi (Firecracker 400) over 40 times , I told my Mom Dale was dead on impact , watching it with my 85 year old mother and sister live on TV , as soon as I saw the look on Schrader's face when he was asked about if Earnhardt was ok ,Ken was the first one to look in Dale's window and was pulled back by the Safety crew , He said " I don't know I'm not a Doctor" Schrader was almost in tears.
I was working on the #36 M&M's car at the time. The Simpson belts that everyone used had a metal piece to pre-tension the belts. The piece was always in front of the seat above the drivers shoulders. Earnhardt's belt's were installed how Dale wanted them to be installed, with the metal piece behind the seat. When he was thrown forward in the crash, the metal piece caught on his seat and tore exactly at the metal piece. Nascar didn't dare tell the fans that Earnhardt had done it to himself. However, they made sure every car had the belts installed properly the next race. Simpson's complaints were justified. Nascar did what Nascar does. Make a bad situation much worse.
@@RoyJenkins777 I started at the MB2 Motorsports shop in Mooresville, NC. We had moved to a larger shop near Roush Racing at the Concord, NC Airport before the Earnhardt crash.
@@CoffeeCupVT The only accurate parts of what @donzufal shared were .... !) Earnhardt did it to himself 2) NASCAR didn't dare tell fans. 3) Simpson's complaints just I doubt he'll accept it. And he definitely won't like it. But I'll tell @donzufal and the producer of this worthless video what *REALLY* happened below.
Look, the only thing Schrader has ever said, was that when he pulled down Earnhardt's window net he knew that it was much worse than that he was already dead
I remember after Dale won the Daytona 500 they asked if he was going to Disneyland he said, " HELL NO, I'M GOING TO OPRYLAND!!" That's when I knew he was a real life honest to goodness good ole boy!! The man in black RIP. 🙏🏻👏🏻👑🏆🔥🔥💯
Nice! The 2001 Daytona 500 is one of the greatest sports stories ever, for the drama that unfolded that day and the circumstances surrounding it. Good work. Irish Nascar fan.
Myself, my sister and two of my nieces drove dirt track and asphalt short tracks in the 80's. The first promise we made each other was that we were all out there for the same reason and we weren't family on the track!!!
I was a big Dale Earnhardt fan. When he died, my enthusiasm and love for the race died. I tried being a Dale Earnhardt junior fan , but it wasn't the same. That same year we had 9-11. Eleven days after 9-11 My Sister was killed in a domestic violence act. My sister and I had been huge Nascar lovers and had been to many races together as well. Needless to say that was the worst year of my life. I will never be the same person again And I have not watched nascar since.😢
I was one of the track safety crew that day. If you know what a "basil skull fracture" is. Visually, it is VERY trumatic to see! He bled out thru every orifice. Unfortunately, Kenny was the 1st person to Dale. It was horrific to see, especially as a non-medical person. As for myself, I considered Dale as a "friend." That memory will be with me until I die.😢
My wife died of a Basil Skull Fracture. She was riding her bike and was hit from behind. No recovery from that. Maybe I'm remembering wrong but I thought they reported that he did not wear his Hans Device.
@@Cioli1127The Hans Device became mandatory after Dale’s accident. I think maybe Brett Bodine and another driver had a Hans Device on the day Dale died. I’ll never forget seeing Dale’s face on the TV with his death date listed. I never ever thought he would have died in the accident, but he did. What a sad day.
If you've never seen THE DAY: REMEMBERING DALE, you should. It'll get ya. I'm a 55 yr old man, and it got me. I'm not a hard-core NASCAR guy, but I am a car guy. On a scale of 1-10, I'm maybe a 6. I actually saw the crash as it happened. I saw the last 20 minutes or so. When it started looking like schitt was gonna go south, I got that panicky feeling. When it showed Dale jr running into the ER, I knew it was bad, and when Mike Helton said we've lost Dale Earnhardt, I cried like I'd lost a family member. Should check it out.
17:35 i haven't watched any races since Dale Earnhardt died,i remember exactly where i was when this happened and called my dad because he was along with us all a huge Earnhardt fan. R.I.P. INTIMIDATOR 😢
I remember watching and right before Dale got in the car he seemed more affectionate towards Teresa than I had ever seen him. It was odd and I had an eerie feeling something was going to happen. God Bless
This was a decent video despite the clickbait title. I was of course at a Daytona viewing party in 98. I cried tears of joy when Dale won. The respect everyone showed was amazing. At the same party with the same friends in 01. I had a new girlfriend who met a lot of my friends for the first time that day. It was also her first and only Dayton party. My friends of course took the opportunity to try and embarass me about my ToJ a few years earlier. About half way through the race, one girl asked me if I was that happy about Dale winning, how would I react if he died. I told her I would be useless for a week. I was working my part time job later that evening when my pager (remember those) started blowing up. I called the first number and when my friend answered, I immediately said "tell me it's not what I think." He said "it is, Dale died." I was correct, I was a mess for a week. Fast forward to 23 years to present day. I can't tell you the last time I watched a NASCAR race. I was going through my totes of Dale Earnhardt collectibles the other day. The memories were good, but wow, did this video make my allergies flare up!!.
Earnhardt hit a concrete wall almost straight on and it killed him. This Prompted NASCR to start installing safer barriers. An Idea that Smokey Yunick Presented to NASAR in the early 1960's . Better late than never I suppose.
I had given birth to my one and only child 66 days prior. We had been in Daytona hospital a few weeks prior to the race. I was so happy and appreciated what NASCAR did for my baby in NICU. So, i was super excited to see the race on TV & introduce my son to NASCAR! I haven't watched a race since.
It's no ones business what the man saw when he got to Dale that day and they should be ashamed for constantly bringing it up and making him relive that moment!!🙏✌
Except for the obvious click bait. Not one single word attributed to anything Schrader ever actually said about anything in his extremely long career. Video contains nothing that has not been said in hundreds of Earnhardt videos. UA-cam needs a report subject of click bait to get this demonetized.
Jr had Kenny Schrader on his podcast. Besides some great stories, they discussed that day. Jr read a letter he wrote to Kenny saying he was glad he was the one, and thanking him. Worth searching and watching it.
I still have this race on video tape. Somwhere. I never rewatched this race. I still see it in my dreams. A tragic end to then living legend. I think he would be rolling in his grave to see what nascar has become
He was the first person to reach the car. He, being another driver is unimportant. Look closely at his reaction. If you saw anyone like that you would also take it to your grave. Think about it.
I was never a Dale Earnhardt fan. When people would ask me who my favorite driver was, I used to say, "My favorite driver was the one that beats Dale Earnhardt." The day Dale Earnhardt passed away I cried like a baby. I cried like millions of other Earnhardt fans, for his family, for his friends, for his fans and because I knew that NASCAR would never be the same. Love him or hate him you knew what he meant to the sport. That was the tragic day God called Dale home and took my favorite drive to root against... forever changing NASCAR for me. 🏁#3 forever "The Intimidator" forever the Legend, forever Missed. 🏁
There are several times in life when we label a day. When Buddy Holly, Richie Valans, and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash, it was the day the music died. When Dale hit the turn 4 wall, it was the day NASCAR died. I worked with several teams and remember the exact moment I heard the news. Everyone in the business agreed that NASCAR would go down hill from this. Many of Dale's fans stepped away from the sport. What this video doesn't tell you, is how Dale started the souvenir trucks, and he taught others how to make money from this. Dale knew how to market himself. Inside secret - Dale and Gordon were good friends.
Ken didn't need to say anything. That impact said it all. There is no need to go into grusome detail. It would have been graphically obvious that he was deceased. Remember him as he was in life. The image at that point would do no good.
Dale Earnhardt was the reason I watched Nascar. I did watch a little after his death hoping Jr. would follow his father's footsteps in championships but I soon realized he wouldn't. I did watch it once in a while but when Nascar lost it's southern identity, I never watched it again, I'm sure many of you know exactly what I'm talking about. God Bless Dale.
I was actually a homeless 16 yr old living in my truck in the Arizona desert while watching this race on a tiny battery powered tv! I spent my last $2 for 4 AA batteries. Racing fan from birth and I remember feeling like if even Dale wasn't safe, none of us were. That feeling was permanent. 😔🙏
I knew it was a good idea to read the comments first. I truly didn't think ANYONE could drag that out of Kenny Schrader. Glad to see I was right. Sad to see a content creator this dishonest. Thank you for letting everyone know!!
@@tjwhite6429 Couldn't have said it better myself. I agree with you 100%. It's disgusting how some youtuber's will stoop to such lows, especially when it involves a death, where they lie in a video title to try to sucker viewers in.
That was the day that NASCAR died for me. I was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan and cried for days, I just couldn't help it people. While I knew Jr. was racing, nothing was the same and I have not watched an entire race since then. A lap or two here and there is quite enough for me. RIP Dale, we still miss you.
Will never forget that day and watching that race with my Dad.Miss you and miss seeing you race Dale you still are and will always be the best. Also when me and my Dad saw the 15 car pileup at Las Vegas during the 2011 indycar championship when JR Hildebrand,Will Power,Paul Tracy, and Alex Lloyd all walked up to Dan Wheldon’s car they knew from what they saw that he was gone too.R.I.P. Dale and Dan😇
I know he won his last race at Talledega Fall of 2000 but anyone who watched him and saw his crash history knew he was never the same after that life threatening 1998 Talladega crash. It remains to this day one of the most violent and brutal crashes I ever saw there.
I remember this well. A couple of guys at work used to do a betting pool on the races. I had picked Michael Waltrip to win and my boss said, "The only way Waltrip will win is if Dale is dead!" He chuckled but Waltrip ended up winning that race because of...well...we didn't chit chat a lot that day at work.
@@danielnaumann1692 Yes that is likely true. I just meant it was a statement that sounded prophetic , it made me think of Waylen Jennings saying to Buddy Holly "I hope your plane crashes"
Dale Sr. Was the greatest driver. There were other greats like Petty, Walthup, JJ, and the list goes on. I will remember Dale Sr. for the rest of my life. I always hoped Jr. Would fill his boots but just never quite did. He was good but not the INTIMIDATOR. #3 will remain forever eched in my soul.
Huge Rusty Wallace fan back in the 90s. Rest of my family were Dale fans...It was extremely interesting when we all went to the races..I cried like a baby the day Dale passed away....I knew racing as we knew it was over ...And it is over...After Rusty there weren't any tuff guys left ..These cars are nothing but a computer now ...Kids driving them.. Probably can't even change a tire.
I was watching that race on tv. When the crash occurred and I saw how he hit the wall , I was sickened. I knew he died in that mess. My heart broke for his son. That was a horrible day.
I was watching it too. However, the impact did not look bad at all. Not sure how you would have assumed death just from the crash itself, however after the cars came to a stop the reaction of everyone around the car was a different story.
It’s always the wrecks that look pedestrian that are most fatal. The guy’s luck just ran out. He’d climbed out of a lot of wild collisions. When that wreck happened I didn’t think anything of it. That was a terrible event. That year had some things go down NONE of us will ever forget. Already an entire generation has come of age, born after 2001. Crazy.
@@osumbuckeyenut I was watching the race at my Dad's, and thought the same as you. It didn't look that bad. Just another wreck. So I left right after Earnhardt crashed. Like, literally right after he hit the wall. So I didn't see Kenny's reaction, or that of the other drivers, until I watched replays later. At the time, I saw Earnhardt crash, left, and then got a call from my Dad about half an hour or so later, telling me Dale had died. I was gobsmacked, and just devastated. I just couldn't believe it. And I have never taken a crash for granted like that again. When Newman wrecked in 2020, I remembered Earnhardt. And I just sat, frozen in front of my TV, with my heart in my throat, and tears in my eyes, praying as hard as I've ever prayed in my life. I was SURE we'd all just watched Ryan Newman die, right in front of us. Thank God, he ended up being okay. But even to this day, almost 5 years later, watching a replay of that crash makes me feel sick to my stomach. It was one of the scariest things I've ever seen, in over 40 years of watching NASCAR. And it's because of what happened to Earnhardt, that I took Newman's crash as terrifyingly seriously as I did. I learned my lesson, that day in 2001. And to this day, no matter how minor a crash seems, I don't assume anything, and I hold my breath until we hear from the driver, or that window net comes down. And then I always breathe a huge sigh of relief.
I wish the creator of this video would acknowledge us to why he worded the description of this video with a cold and simple....lie. You are not just disrespecting us, you're honestly going to hurt Kenny who has hurt so much. You could cause a lot of pain to someone that has lived with incident for over 23 years now. Why? For views? This just isn't good journalism.
I to have felt that same way I don't like to say it, but dale was just that heart and soul of NASCAR at the times, I just miss my man dale SR.HE MADE RACING SO DAM FUN! NOBODY ELSE COULD RACE THAT WAY IT WAS HIS STYLE OF RACING!!!! I JUST MISS U DALE!!! U WERE THE BEST..!!
I was never an Earnhardt fan but his death was a national tragedy and Kenny Schrader is a gentleman. He has never spoken about what he saw he will NEVER speak on it. He had too much respect for senior and cares too much for Seniors children to ever do so.
I was watching that day as a new family man ,watching NASCAR in surround sound for the first time!!was also the last full race!!NASCAR was never the same !!

Wow. I met Dale at his son’s press conference when he joined driving the same car class as Dale & signed up with Budweiser, the Clydesdale horses were there too. He was so proud of his son & a bit stressed while he was waiting for the event, he’d ask me if he looked ok, etc. He was really nice.
Dale was not out cold before he hit the wall but when he collided with Schrader that's when his seatbelt severed. His entire body and his head and everything hit the steering wheel it was like a wet noodle. Who knows if his seatbelt would have saved his life had it not broke. But he still most likely would have resulted in a ring fracture or whiplash
It was a sad day in NASCAR history. I grew up around stock car racing, in the 70's - 80's when racing was at its height . Every race track in Indiana had a No. 3 on it, let it be Stock car or Sprint or Outlaws, Racing will never be the same ever again. Dale Earnhardt will always be the King of Racing. RIP INTEMIDATOR
Sterling Marlin got alot of death threats after this because he was the one that turned dale into the wall. We all know that dale through a late block and there just wasn't room for him and Sterling turned him into the wall doing almost 200mph. He had to have security around him at all the tracks that year as people were legitimately trying to kill him. Cant imagine him having to live with that all these years. Now he has ALS its tragic all the way around.
I was able to watch Dale sr. race Dale jr. live at Daytona. Dale jr was starting the last season he was in the Busch series and he came in as champion driving the AC Delco 3 car and since he was now a series champ he got to race against Dale sr. in the Iconic races known as "IROC" or International Race of Champions. What an awesome time I had that weekend.
I had the privilege of being on Dale's pitcrew at Monroe speedway roadcourse in Washington in the mid 1980's. He wanted the seat and steering wheel set up so he was closer to the wheel so as to steer more with his shoulders rather than just with his arms. It was to give him more stamina in a long race. I believe his body and face so close to the steering contributed to his death
The day Dale Earnhardt died, I quit watching racing. NASCAR'S best driver died doing what he loved and no one could hold a candle to him. 2001 was one of the worst years of my life, so far. RIP Mr. Earnhardt 😢❤🎉
@TheShannon681 He was the last of the drivers I really enjoyed....KIng Richard, Neils Bonnet, Alan Kulwecki, Bill Elliott, Davie Allison.... I may have just lost my appetite.
I never understood the appeal of rednecks, making just left hand turns, just chasing each other…sure, there’s always the possibility of a fiery wreck, but at the price of three hours of watching them go around in circles…
"Thank you"? SERIOUSLY? This channel owner lied like hell in the video title for clickbait.......and it's especially disgusting when it involves the death of someone. Furthermore: there is absolutely no new information in this video, this is all old news. Don't encourage these low life click baiters.
I was watching and told my husband that I believed that he was dead and my husband said he'd seen D.E. in worse crashes but it was heart 💔 smash. Sad day for OG NASCAR 😢
When I was in NASCAR with Roush racing a guy with us inspected the cars inside for safety. He did that for Carl Edwards and he was good friends with the guy that did the safety work for Dale Earnhardt and he was told that on Dale Earnhardt Seat, that was the seatbelt that was routed the wrong way and the wrong way meant it was up against a sharp piece of metal. They tried to tell him the right way and he said he wants it this way or no other way, they left it alone and that’s what happened. He didn’t hit the wall real hard but just hard enough for that seatbelt to break and send him into the dash I’ve got pictures of the steering wheel on the dash I wouldn’t dare share it with anybody, but that’s the true facts.
Dale Earnhardt Sr died on FEBRUARY 18,2001 I was watching that race as I have every Sunday . That day I was celebrating my 40 th Birthday just so happened Daytona fell on My Fortieth birthday 18 February we had the music up watching the race cooking out celebrating UNTIL , IT HAPPENED , I WAS IN UTTER SHOCK AND DISBELIEF and needless to say ,So much for my 40 th. Party no one was in the mindset to Celebrate 😢😢😢
Ken Schrader has never spoken about what he witnessed that day, and he likely never will. He’s a man of true dignity and honor, and he’ll carry that memory with him to his grave
My mother and stepfather’s neighbors had a son that worked in the DEI motor shop and was at the race. The son called his parents and told them Dale had died and they told mom. We had watched the race at her house so of course she told me. This was 20-30 minutes before it was announced officially. It was so sad, knowing he was gone but seeing people on air speculating about his injuries. I agree that NASCAR then began a slow descent to irrelevance, delayed only by Dale, Jr’s active years. The only salvation for the sport might be, and I emphasize might be, if they did away with the standardized cars etc. and went back to the wild, best engineered car wins days and everyone else innovates to try to catch up.
I remember he said "I knew there was nothing I could do for him "
I feel Schrader was the first one to know we lost Him .

I hear you buddy, and I agree! Old school honor, and Old, is Gold.
This was the beginning of the end for NASCAR, it was never the same after. RIP Intimidator
I haven't watched a race since !
I watched it for a few more year's after the wreck. But it's not the same! That was truly the day that Nascar died! It hasn't been the same since! And it never will
I HAVEN'T WATCHED IT EITHER SINCE DALE DIED
I completely stopped watching NASCAR after his death. He was NASCAR to me.

Ken Schrader has never talked about what he saw that day, and he will take it to his grave. He is a man of dignity and honor
Well said
I hate these clips
Schrader did talk to the winner of that Daytona 500 race, Michael Waltrip. Waltrip asked him about Dale. All Schrader said was it's not good. Mikey didn't get to celebrate the win that Dale, Sr had predicted he would have that day.
Decent video but a Bullshit thumbnail.
Clickbait.
I absolutely hate people that create and lie on their title as to what the video contains
I hate it too they do it to get more views
I think there channels should be fined for intentionally misleading us viewers
I agree with you I see a lot of videos like that they do that so they'll get views
Nigel Farage is the last Englishman, the rest are complete assholes. No mention of Simpson's pleas to install the seat belts correctly.

Some more f@#$ click bait!!
I knew he was gone the moment I saw Kenny and when he didn't exit the car
That wasnt the only change.@plainsman
Schrader was on Dale Jr's show and Dale said how much respect he has for Schrader for not saying ANYTHING to ANYONE about that day of what he saw. He could of made lots of money if he was that type of person.
*could have
At some point Jr. said the two talked about his fathers death in detail. I would assume what was said will remain between the two of them forever
I'm sorry to hear that. That has to be hard to deal with.
I was watching the race on TV When he hit the wall I knew he was gone,it was just a different looking wreck, and then the blue tarp. That confirmed my fears..I was devastated,Have never watched another race since...I can honestly say,I loved him,met him in Jennerstown,Pa.
Great 😃👍 video
Agreed!
Agreed also! A little below 60, and was the best driver in my era!
Agreed
Well put! Agreed as well.
I may be mistaken but didn't Dale own the team that Dale Jr. and Waltrip drive for, and Dale Sr was still driving for Richard Childress? If that is the case then conflict of interest is played a role in his death
NASCAR was over the day dale died became no fun to watch or go to races anymore
I agree whole heartily Dale who the best ever
Agreed.
I think you are pretty much correct but I think it died when Dale Jr. Quit.
@H43339 I agree..
@@seanburgmeier It's called clickbait and too many are using it anymore.
He never told anybody including his family..
All I know is I came off turn 2, she just blowed up, hit the wall, hard lick!!!!!
RIP sir❤
how did they bring juptier to florida and put a house on jt

I lived and worked in Charlotte during the time that Dale died...I wasn't a nascar fan at all. But the cloud of grief that covered the entire city for over a week was palpable. No matter where you went, everyone was in mourning like their own family had died. It was crazy.
I had never met him, but watched every race. When he died it literally felt like I had lost a family member. Still miss him today in the same way. ❤❤😢
It's still a hard pill to swallow....
I was at both races the year he won the Daytona 500 and the 500 he lost his life! He still is a legend today!
Same here
That is how I felt too.
Yes, Terry Labonte fan here. Didn’t think much of Dale until that afternoon
I was at the race when Dale died I had to go home and tell my dad and he broke down bawling
So did I......
Saddest day in nascar history and Dale Earnhardt will always be the intimidator. RIP Dale will never be forgotten 😂😂
My true favorite driver. RIP Dale 💕 🙏
He was actually pretty good friends with most his rivals on the track. They would go fishing together and respected eachother off the tracks
OMG you are the only person on yt that knows how to say disoriented. THANK YOU I was starting to believe disorientated was a word.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Yeah nascar threw Bill Simpson under the bus. Page out of a politician's play book. Almost ruined Simpson's company

What good would it ever be to talk about what you saw in a death. Ken Schrader is a man of integrity!
Look, the only thing Schrader has ever said, was that when he pulled down Earnhardt's window net he knew that it was much worse than that he was already dead
Kenny didn't put the window net down .when he saw. Dales condition he freaked out and motioned the crash team over to do it
@RicAughinbaugh-lj9nn then how in the hell was he to see Dale's condition he said that when he pulled the window net down he could tell it wasn't good
I remember after Dale won the Daytona 500 they asked if he was going to Disneyland he said, " HELL NO, I'M GOING TO OPRYLAND!!" That's when I knew he was a real life honest to goodness good ole boy!!
I tried being a Dale Earnhardt
junior fan , but it wasn't the same. That same year we had 9-11. Eleven days after 9-11 My Sister was killed in a domestic violence act. My sister and I had been huge Nascar lovers and had been to many races together as well. Needless to say that was the worst year of my life. I will never be the same person again And I have not watched nascar since.😢
I'm sorry 😢
They made the HANS device because of this wreck, I believe

I called the first number and when my friend answered, I immediately said "tell me it's not what I think."
He said "it is, Dale died."
I was correct, I was a mess for a week.
@@mikeskidmore6754 That figures. Smokey was a trailblazer in many ways, especially with engine and suspension mods.

LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!!
The Day Dale Earnhardt died was shocking and tragic! 😢
I live in North Carolina so NASCAR is deep in our blood. I have to say you did a spectacular job on this tribute. Thank you
Except for the obvious click bait.
We loved in NC near Concord, and we were watching that day. Let me tell you the sadness that hung over the entire area was palpable.
Dale Earnhardt was my nascar hero.
I haven’t watched a single race since that day. 😩
How did nascar lose its southern identity?

I know he won his last race at Talledega Fall of 2000 but anyone who watched him and saw his crash history knew he was never the same after that life threatening 1998 Talladega crash. It remains to this day one of the most violent and brutal crashes I ever saw there.
I remember this well. A couple of guys at work used to do a betting pool on the races. I had picked Michael Waltrip to win and my boss said, "The only way Waltrip will win is if Dale is dead!" He chuckled but Waltrip ended up winning that race because of...well...we didn't chit chat a lot that day at work.

Well, Waltrip would have won that race even if Dale didn’t crash. He was protecting his team’s finish.
@@danielnaumann1692 Yes that is likely true. I just meant it was a statement that sounded prophetic , it made me think of Waylen Jennings saying to Buddy Holly "I hope your plane crashes"

He was my favorite driver and his son Dale Jr for ever will be forever God bless Dale SR rest in paradise Dale you will be missed forever 🙏😢
The day NASCAR died for me, never the same after
I was watching that race on tv. When the crash occurred and I saw how he hit the wall , I was sickened. I knew he died in that mess. My heart broke for his son. That was a horrible day.
I didn’t, it was the intimidator nothing could stop him . I was more worried when Tony flipped his car and slumped in the seat.
@@osumbuckeyenut I agree with you fully. I said the same thing about the crash, it looked to light to be fatal. But, unfortunately, it was.
Ken Schrader will never tell what he seen that awful day R.I.P. Dale you will forever be missed by me
He has already told. Screen was up. He pretty well knew Dale was gone
Didn't say that was all he saw
I wish the creator of this video would acknowledge us to why he worded the description of this video with a cold and simple....lie.
You are not just disrespecting us, you're honestly going to hurt Kenny who has hurt so much. You could cause a lot of pain to someone that has lived with incident for over 23 years now.
Why?
For views?
This just isn't good journalism.
I loved to hate you Dale but I still miss watching you run! R.I.P. Dale... Respect!
Dales death was the beginning of the end of my following NASCAR.
I remember that day well.😢😢 we lost a legend that day. 😢
Kenny Schrader's a good racer and a great friend love him and his wife
At the time I was a big NASC fan. I remember this day and hearing the sad news of his passing.
Back in the day I was a huge fan of Harry Gant, the Skoal Bandit. There, I'm dating myself.
Anytime I watch videos about da.Y, he passed away in that race.Car well things like this actually makes me cry because I missed the guy so much
He was the best. I loved him! Never be another like him in my lifetime.❤️🙏💯😎🇺🇸
I was watching that day as a new family man ,watching NASCAR in surround sound for the first time!!was also the last full race!!NASCAR was never the same !!
DALE"THE INTIMIDATOR "EARNHARDT IS THE GREATEST AND THE BEST RACE CAR DRIVER IN THE HISTORY OF RACING 🏁🏆🏁 NO ONE WILL EVER TOP DALE " THE INTIMIDATOR " EARNHARDT 🏁🏆🏁 HE WILL FOREVER BE THE BEST RACE DRIVER EVER 🏁🏆🏁💝🤗💝 GONE FAR TOO SOON BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN AND ALWAYS LOVED 🏁🏆🏁🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow. I met Dale at his son’s press conference when he joined driving the same car class as Dale & signed up with Budweiser, the Clydesdale horses were there too. He was so proud of his son & a bit stressed while he was waiting for the event, he’d ask me if he looked ok, etc. He was really nice.
Lovely job here. All facts and no fantasy. Thank you.
Everyone has their hero and Dale Earnhardt was mine. ✌🏻from Ga.
This is some bullshit click bait. Schrader has never talked about and he never will
He did once. Right after the wreck. Earnhardt was out cold before he hit the wall.
@fposmith No he didn't. He's never told what he seen. And no Dale wouldn't have been "out cold" before he hit the wall.
We all know what he saw that day 😢 the death of a father, Friend, husband and the day nascar died. 😢
I was at work and listened to every race on the radio, this particular tragic race I can tell you exactly where I was. I have the newspaper put away!
No, Mr. Schrader and Dale were good friends, there is no way he would disrespect Dales memory, or his family...Rest in peace #3.
We always understood that it was because of Dale wanting to wear an open face helmet instead of a full face helmet.
I taped this race, and I still have it on VHS.
The day Dale Earnhardt died, I quit watching racing. NASCAR'S best driver died doing what he loved and no one could hold a candle to him. 2001 was one of the worst years of my life, so far. RIP Mr. Earnhardt 😢❤🎉
Thats shame..you missed a lot
@TheShannon681 He was the last of the drivers I really enjoyed....KIng Richard, Neils Bonnet, Alan Kulwecki, Bill Elliott, Davie Allison.... I may have just lost my appetite.
I never understood the appeal of rednecks, making just left hand turns, just chasing each other…sure, there’s always the possibility of a fiery wreck, but at the price of three hours of watching them go around in circles…
@@patriciasmith2827Me too… the races just didn’t matter anymore.
Thank you for the post! 😔💔🙏🏻
Thanks for watching! Who should we cover next?
@ Maybe you could do Rock Hudson! ✌🏼😊
"Thank you"? SERIOUSLY? This channel owner lied like hell in the video title for clickbait.......and it's especially disgusting when it involves the death of someone. Furthermore: there is absolutely no new information in this video, this is all old news. Don't encourage these low life click baiters.
I was a very small child when this happened, I only remember all the neighbourhood adults talking about it, in shock.🌹
I learned a lot more about this, thanks ☺️
If ya ain’t first, yer last! 😂 fr tho this guy is the person I want to narrate my life 😭🤣
Dale Earnhardt removed his seat belt like he usually did. He ate the steering wheel when he hit that wall. No one will EVER convince me otherwise. 😎
Dale hated the seat belts
You don’t mention that the new type of head restraint had already been tested. Dale refused to wear it.
Thanks
