I feel bad for Matt Kenseth. It took a lot of emotional maturity, fortitude, and humility to maintain composure, avoid drama, and to just focus on being his best self. Matt Kenseth took the brunt of the force from every altercation in his career, he was arguably the most level-headed, even-tempered driver on the track, and after all of it, that one move by Joey Logano, that one unnecessary setback, awakened the wrath of the most calm driver.
Also, I feel like I should note that the transition element of Denny Hamlin's FedEx 11 moving on screen when you said that the intensity of racing at Martinsville is dialed to 11 was very clever symmetry between the script and the visuals.

primitive methods to repair primitive technology...
In truth, this is a very old-school repair technique that appeals to the "spirit of the machine" or "Anima ex Machina" in engineering terminology. They're punishing the vehicle in the hope that it encourages it to function more favorably in the future. A type of Pavlovian negative reinforcement. This is the same reason that 'percussive maintenance' works sometimes. If the machine spirit it scared of failure, or further punishment, then it will do whatever is possible to prevent such situations again. Think of it as a type of machine learning. A "great" one you missed was the Bodines. Geoff, Brett, and Todd would take each other out for no apparent reason other than sibling rivalry. I understand it got so bad that grandma had to give them a talking to at Christmas dinner.
What's interesting about the Bodines is that Brett and Todd were living under their brother Geoff's shadow since day one.
Geoff was a good driver by winning the 1986 Daytona 500, 1987 IROC Season, 1994 All Star Race and won the Rookie of the Year in 1982 and has 18 wins to his name. His best finish for the championship was 3rd in 1990. He's perhaps best known for the scary looking crash from the inaugural NASCAR Truck Series race in Daytona in 2000 which in my opinion is the scariest crash in the entire sport and that crash ties in with Mike Harmons Practice crash in Bristol in 2002 including Michael Waltrips Xfinity series crash at the same track in 1990 in my book. Geoff is also perhaps best known for buying the late Alan Kulwickis team in 1994 by keeping the number and font and Geoff didn't do well being an owner driver in the Cup Series
Brett won by a possible scoring error at North Wilkesboro in 1990 when electronic scoring didn't exist until a few years later and win number two never came. His career ended by a practice crash in Michigan in 2003. He too bought a team by NASCAR legend Junior Johnson but the team was being leased to Brett (How do I know this? Well ask good ol' S1apshoes!)
Todd was a journeyman driver unlike his brother Brett he won 15 Xfinity Series races and when he drove in the truck series he drove in style! Winning the 2006 and 2010 NASCAR Truck Series championships including winning at Daytona 2008 and 2009 by having 22 wins to his name...
I have a cousins wife who has a family member who knew the Bodines in Pennsylvania...
The Labonte brothers were a good rivalry between them too! Terry won the Cup championship in '84 and Bobby well Bobby was in the Xfinity Series in the early 90s before moving to Joe Gibbs Racing in the mid nineties during Bobby's career his brother won his second championship in '96 and it wasn't until 2000 Bobby won the championship in a Pontiac. The 2000 Cup Series Championship was also the year that Dale Earnhardt finished second in points... Sometimes I wonder if Dale won his eighth title in 2000 if Bobby wasn't consistent...

Matt Kenseth is my favorite racer because he teaches us one of the most important lessons in human history.
No one is obliged to be nice to you.
People are nice to you because they choose to be, so don't take it for granted because no one is absent of choosing differently at any given point.
On top of that, just because someone's a nice person doesn't mean they can't do something to screw you over in any way, shape, or form. Respect is something earned, not taken.
Be kind to one another...... because if you go around being an insufferable prick...... one day someone will wake up and choose violence and you'll be on your back in the blink of an eye
Peaceful men are far better than harmless men, as peaceful people are capable of dishing out great violence if they want, harmless men are just that, harmless
And this - everyone has their breaking point. Just hope they're not breaking your way!
Kenseth belongs in Gitmo

Keke Rosberg just got lucky. If not for Didier Peroni's accident Ferrari would have won the championship, also the Renaults being unreliable helped him a lot too.
As a Jeff Gordon fan, watching Matt Kenseth take out Joey Logano, leading to Jeff’s 93rd and final win, was one of the best NASCAR moments of all time in my opinion.
Its still devastating to this very day that after Jeff Gordon won his 93rd and final win at Martinsville in 2015 many of us thought he would have a fairytale ending career winning the championship at Homestead for the ages to look back on but sadly we were robbed... it still gets me because I rooted for Gordon that day... sure I wanted Truex and Harvick but I picked Jeff to win his 5th championship because he had more experience but when Kyle Busch won the championship I was devastated like everyone else...

@@manueltjuhh3807 That's not true. The viewership this year is down from previous years including last year. It's because of all the bad decisions made by NASCAR over the years. People are going to watch Indycar and IMSA because they just can't watch NASCAR anymore.
This is one of the best nascar documentary that I have ever witnessed. This was just moving and gave me nostalgia form when I was young. Nascar UA-camrs are hard to come by and you are definintly my favorite.
One of my favs videos on YT. Absolutely perfect. Love to comeback and rewatch this masterpiece
imagine getting to be the last person Dale Sr ever flipped off. I'd wear that as a badge of honor
I got flipped off!
Worshipping someone is cringe bro
Dale caused his own demise with pure stupidity..... said the h.a.n.s device was dangerous when he should have just listened to the more intelligent people.

I had a feeling Matt's story was gonna turn into the classic "quiet kid that snapped" story
That's why I'm a Kenseth fan. He doesn't act like Tony Stewart and just lets his wheels do the talking. I just wish his luck wasn't so fucking awful...
At that point Pumped up Kicks began playing rent free in Matt's head as he prepared to take out Joey
Him and Steve Park were my favorite drivers.
@@largol33t1 what was even more sickening most of the time he just got caught in other peoples shit that he had nothing to do with
More like guy with excellent reputation ruins it with one dumb ass move.
This is an amazing video. The story, the background, the obvious time and lost sleep from the dedication to make this length of a masterpiece, and let us not forget the R E V E N G E ! ! !
I have been educated entertained.
that was honestly one of the more interesting documentaries i've watched in a long while
Matt Kenseth was really like “my disappointment is non existent, and my day was not ruined”
You can just see him straight up drive Lagano to the wall.
"Whatever. If you found me dead then just throw me in the trash!"|
Truly a mindset to be feared.
Good one
@@blastermaster5039 From his radio immediately after the wreck, Kenseth & his crew said that it "looked as if he had a tire going down" lmao

@@justasimplemanworkinghiswa1569 well. Not that much anymore.
33:45 is the greatest moment of my life...
I have probably watched this like 5 times since it came out. So well done!
I can respect Matt Kenseth for his conduct. Not really a Nascar fan nor do I watch races, but it's surprising and refreshing to see someone so hard to anger and who can keep his cool.
As an open-wheel and sportscar racing fan, which usually have pretty clean racing, I can't get my head around how NASCAR drivers are constantly punting each other at walls, especially considering that they usually drive at an average speed of around 180mph on faster ovals. I know that NASCAR cars are built like tanks, but it should be a fucking crime, so I also respect this man, even though I've only just found out about him. Well, that and the fact that he's a NASCAR Cup Series champion.
Yeah, I'm not a NASCAR fan at all, mostly because all the drivers seem like assholes who'll happily risk your life just for looking at them funny, so it's kind of surprising to see that there are actually people who drive NASCAR that aren't jerks.
@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN you haven’t seen full races then, drivers try to avoid crashes, this video and a lot of other make NASCAR look like a constant demolition race when that’s far from the truth.
@@sandenson punting people or “bump and run” drivers are booed for their antics, you see fans really cheering for the cleaner drivers. The champ from 2020 was Chase Elliot, and he is one of the cleanest drivers out there. Every driver respects the kid because of it.
I hold a huge respect for Kenseth. Not only was he the most levelheaded driver in Modern NASCAR, but he took out the most big headed driver and cost Logano the championship.
A true lover of the sport. A hero. Someone who knows injustice when he sees it.
@@Krystalmyth yep. 💯%
But he got his championship a little bit later
Jokes on u Logano won a championship later on
@@crispykiddo70 Nobody cares about Joey Logano
I don't even watch NASCAR, but I watched this entire video and learned a lot about racing and the culture within the sport. Very well done!
I come back to this video every other week. I mustve seen it dozens of times. Yet i enjoy it every time.
Its a shame its so unique on this channel, its a good format
Finished the vid and I really enjoyed how you delivered this incredible topic. Nascar is so much more than going in an oval.
People who say “NASCAR is just cars going in circles” haven’t really experienced the full extent of the sport
@@danielcurtis2297 As someone who has spent over 20 years watching the sport(not by my own freewill), I can safely say that it is just guys driving in a circle. People passing each other, isn't "action". But keep trying to defend this awful sport.
It's going in an oval and body checking each other at 200 mph, fun for the whole family and definitely a legitimate competition
Especially in Sonoma.
@@danielcurtis2297 It also takes a lot of skill to golf. Doesn't mean it's entertaining to watch. Passing isn't entertaining. "Oh my god! Did you see that!? Tony Stewart just passed Newman! And it took him 3 laps to accomplish it!". It's not entertaining. Sports in general are not entertaining to watch.
Beautiful presentation, great work

I've always had a very mild interest in Nascar, but these stories we're so cool to listen to! The way you told each one was just perfect.
Man thank you. This is an amazing Video. You are a Legend!
32:54 watching the whole crowd cheer as Logano gets taken out is one of the best moments in sports history
amen i never seen fans go nuts like that not even with gorden and clint
Hearing the whole crowd cheer👏🏽, can't have those moments without a hero and a villain.
the dark timelines ended that day.
@Theiceberg agrees
People who cheered that on aren't real race fans.
I miss NASCAR in the 2000’s, just the aesthetic of the broadcast, the excitement it brought, the amazing PS2 games. When NASCAR is on TV you can’t confuse it for anything else.
It was definitely a trip down memory lane. NASCAR now hardly can keep my attention. They've change too much.
Me too, I am not american but grew up watching american media and NASCAR was my favorite thing after prowrestling. The early 2000's were an amazing time for races.
@@SammEater I'm American but I'm right there with you. Those years were peak entertainment with NASCAR and WWE. Day race on Sunday than watching a paper view WWE match in the evening with my siblings and parents.
