I dislike when people use the term "jet fuel" like it makes a difference in the performance of an engine. Jet fuel is actually a higher refined kerosene fuel, aka diesel fuel. What they actually found was an oxidizer liquid that they use in space as a rocket fuel.
If that's the case then why aren't jet planes smokey old coal rollers? Jets run on basically what is kerosene/paraffin. AvGas is diesel ish but more torque and less horsepower than diesel.
@R6AAO ava gas is a high octane 100 i believe. Gas not diesel. It also dries out rubber hoses unlike diesel. Used to run it in a dirt car. Jet A is a higly cleaned kerosene derived from diesel.
@R6AAO no it is not. avation fuel is closer to race fuel but dryer . Cleetus is an idiot does not know what he is talking about. Avgas is a highly refined form of gasoline that contains small amounts of tetraethyl lead to boost octane levels.
Robby Gordon wasn't driving the Cingular car in 06. He was driving the Jim Beam #7 that he owned. Coincidentally, he ended up screwing the Cingular car, as Jeff Burton got caught a lap down and ended up 13th that day due to that caution. Got one of Jeff's Cingular cars in my Garage.
Nice video. One little thing, with Jimmie Johnson backing the rear end into the wall, it was actually discussed before the 2011 fall race at Talladega. Good job and keep the videos coming!
Came to the comments to point out that all roll bars are hollow, thumbs up! And a story on one of the most famous crew chiefs of modern times and he doesn't even know how to pronounce his name?
One thing that he did not mention about the oversized engine in Petty's car, was that Petty FIRED Maurice Petty for building the engine .030 over bore. He fired the cheater for ruining his good reputation as he should have.
You wouldn't get a 382 out of a .030 "over bore"... lol .030 over is pretty much "standard" for a rebuild... For example; It turns a standard (3.48" stroke) small block chevy 350 into a 355... It does NOT add 24 cubic inches... it adds around 5.
Michael waltrip was probably not using jet fuel as jet fuel is closer to diesel fuel or kerosene. However, he could have been adding nitropropane which has its own oxygen like nitromethane but actually mixes with gasoline or if they were running a reasonable percentage of alcohol at that point he could have had a nitro methane
Most likely it would be ethanol but it depends on the grade of fuel.. There is many other additives that can be used as well as the ones you mention. The ones you said will dissolve parts so it's most likely to be a toluene or xylene method.. Maybe tetra ethyl lead..
@R6AAO I remember hearing about how in the old days the fuel guys would take the stuff that was super volatile and you would put a silver spoon into your fuel tank and put like three or four drops down the back of the spoon into this. And it would basically turn nitromethane into nitroglycerin but it made the cars run like hell and shoot green flames out of them. And then I was watching a more recent funny car race and before the car exploded there was a huge green flame coming out of the pipes
Sad part is as a team member and fabricator for a few teams during my career. The most illegal things done to cars hasn’t been found. Love the video. But more things haven’t been found than have.
You left a couple more Smokey Yunik legends out. He built a 1967 Chevy Chevelle that was rumored to be 7/8 scale of the production model along with other modifcations to make it faster. He even provided another chevelle for NASCAR to use as a template. Also, nascar wanted to know how he got so good fuel mileage once and confiscated his fuel cell for inspection. He proceeded to drive the car back to his pits without the fuel cell, he was running fuel lines much larger than the competitors so he could carry extra fuel. Good job on the video. On a side note, been a race fan for 40 years, never had heard the Kenny Schrader one before.
Much enjoyed. I’m currently rocking my 9 month old and just finished listening. It seems you’re a fan of racing but still new to NASCAR? You speak the language. This is a much appreciated video. I was a die hard fan as a kid, 2001-2006ish, but I missed a lot in between. Became a fan again in 2022 and have been to multiple races since. Forgot how much I love the sport. A number of the clips on this video are new to me, some filling in blanks from my time out of following the sport. I grew up a Robby Gordon fan. Enjoyed hearing about his “cheat”. Right on par for him lol. Keep it up. Sub earned.
Thank you so much for the comment! I'm glad you liked the video! Yep, I'm much more into rally racing, but I try to educate myself on other things like NASCAR and F1. That's the entire purpose of this channel basically - I learn something new and make a video about it :) PS. Robby Gordon is THE legend, I love him as well!

You missed the 7/8 th car,Cleveland was genuise the coil of fuel under seat they went as far to remove fuel tank off, they couldn't find anything they handed fuel tank to Yunick he threw tank in back got in and started car drove back to panic, he also was the very first to use giggle juice.he found this by accident do to bad tooth

My brother welding the bumper on Allison's car where it was built in Fayetteville, SC. The look on his face when it fell off while we were watching the race was priceless. He later found out that Nascar did make them lower the bumper as well.
Yes smokey most famous prank In 1968 NASCAR specified how big a fuel tank could be, but he noticed no one said how big the fuel line could be. Instead of a half-inch fuel line, Yunick created a two-inch fuel line that was 11 feet long, and held five gallons of gas. along with the basket ball in the gas tank
Tea-yota?? Ok I say if these guys were able to be that ingenious good for them. You go back to '82 but what about all racing around the world since man has been trying to go fast??
Nascar knew that Junior Johnson's 1966 Galaxie (aka the Yellow Banana) was illegal, but let it run anyway in order to bring Ford back into the sport. Ford had boycotted the first half of the 1966 season after Nascar had outlawed Ford's 427 sohc in 1965
Ford spent millions to mfg. The sohc to nascar's specs in the 60'S (huge $ back then) only to be outlawed after nascar tested the engine!!! Then decided to add a weight penalty of 700 lbs. If used!!! Shitrolling favoritism since the 60'S has ruined stock car racing!!!!!!!
That’s only the tip of the iceberg. Any Mechanic worth his pay never ever tells on himself. Only the real dumb ones tell on themselves. Because most all the garage personnel know all the tricks & how to hid them. It’s a yearly game.
It was Sterno painted inside the intake runners they said stereo like substance something carrying a oxygen molecules probably closer to propolean oxide
Petty said the engine would read in spec once it cooled back down. His crew chief said they could take it to Alaska and it would never cool down enough.
I have a lot of respect for Smokey Eunick. The guy was totally an analytic engineer and thought out solutions with 3D thinking. I was stationed in New Smyrna Beach in 1978 though and one day I was picking up some supllies at Hammond Electronics on North US-1 in Daytona when, to my horror I looked out accross the street from Hammond at Smokey's Garage and someone wasn't thinking "in 3D" that afternoon. Somebody drove a Corvair onto the left hoist and the Corvair fell backwards off the hoist. It looked like maybe Smokey was going launch that Corvair into space, right from Smokey's Garage. Anybody else remember that happening?
Jet fuel would be like adding cooking oil to your mix ! Flash point is not high enough for jet fuel to have any advantage also compressorization ! A jet engine mix's the pressurized air, fuel (and water vapor) to an extremely high temperature when ignited! That's a lot going on to run jet fuel ! FOR NASCAR TO EVEN SAY THAT IS 100% "IGNORANT"
If it isn`t precisely against the rules it`s fair game is exactly the way it`s supposed to be. Hine sight should be against the rules, it seems only the officials have it.

I needed some analogy there to explain what it was, but chemistry is not my strength 😅 thank you for clearing this up, I much appreciate it!
Avgas maybe. Jet fuel, nah.
Ummm Jet fuel is no advantage to a combustion engine. It's even less combustion than diesel fuel.

@R6AAO no it is not. avation fuel is closer to race fuel but dryer . Cleetus is an idiot does not know what he is talking about.

I believe that it was Hydrazine that MWR used.
It’s very volatile and banned by all racing associations.

Smokey Yunik never broke any rules. He was the reason for the rule book.
Guess that you're camera shy. Remember, though, the if you don't look at someone when you are talking, they just assume that you are lying to them.
Smokey was probably the biggest cheater in NASCAR along with Richard Petty
Most cheating was done by CHEATROLET CARS IN NASCAR HISTORY!!!!
