Erlkönig [German ballade][+English translation]

- "Erlkönig" is a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It depicts the death of a child assailed by a supernatural being, the Erlkönig, often half-translated as "Erlking", though the eponymous character is clearly some kind of demon or 'fairy king'. It was originally composed by Goethe as part of a 1782 Singspiel entitled Die Fischerin.
"Erlkönig" has been called Goethe's "most famous ballad". The poem has been set to music by several composers, most notably by Franz Schubert.

Ah, I remember having to learn this thing by heart (translated to my language, thank God) in Foreign Literature class in highschool.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great ballad, but being forced to memorize under the threat of a bad grade would make you hate any work of art.

As far as I am aware, the child is not really assaulted by some supernatural being, but rather suffering from a severe disease, which causes it to hallucinate before ultimately succumbing to fever at the end of the poem.
There is another theory, that the whole story is just a metapher for the boy hitting puberty^^

Diese Interpretation durfte ich mir vor Jahren im Deutschunterricht anhören.
Damals war es anstrengend, doch heute weiß ich ihre Qualität zu schätzen.
Eigentlich nicht für Jugendliche gedacht. Stimmt, im Alter passt das Puzzle auf einmal.

I remember studying this in a music class wile in college! It has a dark and errie side to it. Being a parent, makes me feel for the father for his list child,especially in spite of all his efforts to protect the boy! Great performance!👍🌹👌❤️🖤💛

Beautiful and haunting! I learned the ballad at school and several others of cause. I can't remember which grade I was in. I have still got some of my old books from school,even though I preferred Schiller and Uhland.I also remember Dietrisch Fischer Diieskau very well. I have quite a lot of old records and tapes, but my recordplayer doesn't work very well I am afraid.For personal reasons I am a bit down and I still don't want to believe that things were no different from now years ago.Thank you Dr.Ludwig for uploading all these songs-it really helps.

Strangely enough Goethe didn't want this composition from Schubert. It's a master piece.

😢😢😢 I always feel so bad for the kid and his father. Feels like they're dealing with some psychopath tho I used to just see it as a feverish hallucinating child and his father bringing him to a doctor when I was a kid. As an adult this song hits harder.
There are many theories what it means. Some say, it means puberty. The child dies, and a man is born, who longs for the daughters etc.
There was WAY more emotion in this part 3:11

I think you should be named Minister of Culture in Germany. I know it can amuse you and amuse those who read it, but when I see what disasters happened today in cultural matters, almost everywhere. I don't understand how people with an average cultural level arrive in command posts; then we are surprised by the general lack of culture, which is more devastating than the Coronavirus. Ich habe in Minecraft einen Kontinent erschaffen und dort gibt es das Erlgebirge, regiert vom Erlkönig. Ich habe das so eingebaut, dass das Nachbarland dieses Gedicht geschrieben hat zur Propaganda gegen den Erlkönig und als Kriegsrechtfertigung.
