Jean Sibelius - Finlandia
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лип 2012
- Finlandia, Op. 26 is a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The first version was written in 1899, and it was revised in 1900. The piece was composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire, as the last of seven pieces, each performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history.
The premiere was on 2 July 1900 in Helsinki with the Helsinki Philharmonic Society conducted by Robert Kajanus. A typical performance takes anywhere from 7½ to 9 minutes.
A recurrent joke within Finland at this time was the renaming of Finlandia at various musical concerts so as to avoid Russian censorship. Titles under which the piece masqueraded were numerous, a famously flippant example being Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring.
Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people. But towards the end, a calm comes over the orchestra, and the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn is heard. Often incorrectly cited as a traditional folk melody, the Hymn section is of Sibelius's own creation.
Although initially composed for orchestra, in 1900 Sibelius arranged the entire work for solo piano.
Sibelius later reworked the Finlandia Hymn into a stand-alone piece. This hymn, with words written in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, is one of the most important national songs of Finland (though Maamme is the national anthem). With different words, it is also sung as a Christian hymn (Be Still, My Soul), and was the national anthem of the short-lived African state of Biafra (Land of the Rising Sun).

I grew up amid the lakes and forests of Northern Ontario, in Canada. The landscape there is identical to that of Finland. Many Finnish immigrants settled there, mixing with the aboriginal Cree and Ojibway people. I remember a Cree elder who told me that he couldn't believe that the Finns were Europeans. "They're exactly like us," he said. "They have the sweat hut (= sauna), when they speak it sounds something like our language, they know how to live in the forest, how to hunt, how to walk in the snow, how to tell stories around the campfire in the proper way. They belong here, like we do. It's strange that they look so pale, though." I'm not a Finn, but when I hear Sibelius, he speaks to me like a brother.
Much of love and respect for u!! From Finland🇨🇦🇫🇮

I gotta visit Northern Ontario. Greetings from Finland!
@@rookield8077 The landscape of Northern Ontario is precambrian shield rock covered in forest (deciduous grading into coniferous as a you go northward), with thousands of lakes. Small patches of farms scattered in the southern parts, but 95% of the land is forested. This would be very familiar to you, I'm sure. Finns arrived in the late 19th century and were welcomed because they were skilled lumberjacks and they could compete successfully in fistfights with the French Canadian, Ojibway and Irish lumberjacks. After the fistfights were done with, they all intermarried. Just looking at the map of Northern Ontario, I can find Suomi (town), Suomi Lake, Finland (township), Finland's Bay, Finland Creek, Kittila Maki (neighbourhood in Thunder Bay), Rauhala (another neighbourhood in Thunder Bay), Kivikoski (town), Lappe (originally Lappi, but mispelled by the Post Office), Sistonens Corners, Kormak, Makynen (village), Intola Cemetery, Pohjola Cemetery & Tarmola Cemetery (inhabited by dead Finns, I guess), Ella Lake, Emma Lake, Jantti Lake, Karstula Lake, Kusti lake, Lohi Lake, Matti Lake, Pelo Lake, Pistin Lake, Tenho Lake, four different Maki Lakes and three different Maki Rivers. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a name is Finnish or native Cree or Ojibway, because the languages look similar, but those are the ones I'm fairly sure of.
@@thompsonmackenzie8957 Many people seem to have named the lakes by their names. All the lakes you said were Finnish names.
Also it's funny how "mäki" or as you would call it, maki, used to be the most popular last name in 1800s-1900s. That's why there are so many of them I guess.

Because I'm a finn, I can never listen to this without tears coming into my eyes. The music tells the incredible story of Finland. The hard struggles, the fights, how the tough people of Finland went from being a poor country to rich one through hard work etc of every finn, then becoming a free and modern society. It is difficult to tell with words. One needs to be a finn to really get the depth of this masterpiece. This piece represents Finland from the first notes to the last ones. even if you have to fight an 80 year war, independence is possible against the biggest of empires.
The piece can ,if we leave out anything "political" about it and just think about the natural romanticism, be seen as the "unofficial anthem of the historical finno-estonian cultural region". :) Which meant : Finland+ Estonia+ Livonia (including a part of today's Latvia) + small parts of northern Sweden + small parts of northern Norway (counties FINNmark with much partial finnish-lappish ancestry and a big finnish migration in the 1800s, and under doubt also Troms- where many of the kveenit / kainulaiset /kvæner and the tshud people migrated into from the late medievals and onwards until the 1700s)
So : The unofficial anthem of the "Greater Finland". The official anthem of Finland today is Maamme.
And what a year it will turn out to be. Rise Finland!

Thats true. yes.
This was my mother's favorite hymn. She was born in what is now Oklahoma, but in 1905 is was Indian Territory. I was born when it became the Christian Hymn called "Be Still my Soul" in 1941. I still get tears in my eyes every time I hear it, as now. The last time I heard it was when it was played at her funeral.
I knew it in my school choir as "We Rest On Thee". I was most touched when I saw a Navy choir singing on deck of a ship that was due to deploy to Viet Nam.
I know and love the tune as this hymn:
This Is My Song by Lloyd Stone and Georgia Harkness
This is my song, O God of all the nations,
a song of peace for lands afar and mine;
this is my home, the country where my heart is;
here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine:
but other hearts in other lands are beating
with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.
My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean,
and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine;
but other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
and skies are everywhere as blue as mine:
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
a song of peace for their land and for mine.
May truth and freedom come to every nation;
may peace abound where strife has raged so long;
that each may seek to love and build together,
a world united, righting every wrong;
a world united in its love for freedom,
proclaiming peace together in one song.*
This is what we call "nature". Unfortunately so many countries have lost it. It is still living in Finland and we are proud of it.
The same here in Sweden. The nordics must take care of our countries’ nature
🙄
Protect it, as the population grows, nature recedes.....
I live in finland near small city in country side, surrounded by nature. I haven't seen bears in this neighbourhood (middle finland) but just saw fox the other day.
I was smoking pot at the terrace, so it was silent and peaceful moment... that's the position where I have spotted lot's of animals over the years. Pufff!
I've noticed that when I achieve certain type of calmful and silent state of mind, it seems like nature is coming closer. Birds don't take as much distance, same with rabbits.

It's hard to explain. If you're not Finnish, you may think this is a great piece (or not) but for so many of us this might just be the most beatiful piece of music ever written. Not only because of the music itself, but for what it represents to us. Depicting the struggles our people had to experience in the past in order to grow into the blossoming society it is today. Everything about it makes me feel so grateful to have been born and lived in this country.
A truly inspiring masterpiece and the only music that has ever had me in tears.

3:33 the cellos in the background can almost symbolize the low, ominous drone of bombers flying overhead. The dreadful brass makes it so sad. I almost cry playing this in orchestra. I'm a cellist and it almost feels like I'm in a bomber ready to bomb Helsinki. I know the piece was written well before bombers were invented. But its almost foreshadowing.

@charlesmartel930 While you may be right in some cases, part of the reason why we broke ourselves out from Russia were the terrible conditions we had under Russian rule. I would perhaps even argue that the hope of better life and restoring proper balance to our society played significant role on our decision of independent Finland. Therefore, it could be said that democracy did play a role in our country's history which invalidates your statement arguing about "never" fighting for democracy.

I understand J.R.R Tolkien loved the finnish language, music and nature and used finnish language as inspiration to the elvish language in his books. I feel like the music writers to the movies after Tolkiens work had inspiration from this aswell. A masterpiece.
Tolkein learned Finnish , he read the book about Kalevala.
I believe there were few Finnish musicians who got to add a small piece to the movies, not full composed songs, but things that make scenes dramatic and such. And I'm sure it was solely because of Tolkien's love for Finnish things.
He used Finnish as an inspiration for Quenya, and Welsh as an inspiration for Sindarin.
The biggest mistake made by Peter Jackson it's to not put Tarja Turunen as female elf in his LOTR movies 😅

@@panza. Oh, I didn't mean to say I am Finnish, I'm clearly not. I just meant that this composition is so powerful that it can make even someone who has absolutely no connection to Finland like myself feel patriotism towards them.
@@lifeofabronovich7792 Okey mate :)
Fantastic music,
Great country,
Nice people.
Greetings from Poland :-)
Me suomaslaiset tuemme kaikessa puolalaista kansaillismielisyyttä.
Wszyscy Polacy, których kiedykolwiek spotkałem, to ludzie porządni i bardzo patriotyczni. Polska ma bardzo godne uwagi tradycje wojskowe i historię kulturową.
Finland is 100 years young today. Happy 100th birthday! Warmest wishes from Malaysia.
I'm in a youth orchestra and we're playing this piece in an upcoming concert. I'm glad to see it have the recognition it deserves on UA-cam!
Happy 106th independence day to all my brothers and sisters 🇫🇮
As a Finn i might be a bit biased but i think this truly is one of the most beautiful classical songs there is
M8 I like this piece and I'm not even European
No on
💞🎶💞
Greetings from Sweden for your 100 years of independence. We will never forget our brothers east of the sea❤️It hurts to see swedes and finns throwing shit at each other for misstakes made by leaders of the past. Swedes and finns should stand together, even if not united by nation and law.🇸🇪🇫🇮
Albin S Sweden is great country too! ☺ Greetings From Finland :')
Albin S Yes! Its just stupid to remember the wars and other shit thinks in past, we have to stand in this time, not in the past. Some day i visit Sweden :) ❤❤ love for Sweden from Finland❤❤👏
1939 *invades finland and take our territory 2017 "From russia with love" XD
Make Kalmar Union great again! That would be badass country but what city should be capital?🤔
Go away we dont need your stupid country
You don't have to be Finnish to feel touched about this Sibelius fantastic composition accompanied with wonderful nature images. This video, one of my favourites in UA-cam, always brings tears to my eyes. Thanks once more and best greetings from Spain
Spain was crucial in building what not only Europe, but whole World is. And they face bulls for fun, so Finns feel that.
And beautiful woman is always plus.
Not be Rude..We Most Living It...World Changing..? What do you see?
Totally agree! Kisses from Valencia
Happy Birthday Sibelius.
Your greatness will never die.
I knew after 5 seconds this was going onto my favourites list.
Absolutely fabulous. Love to Finland from the UK.
It's the very eternal essence of Finland. That's why I love Finland from my heart. I believe I understand the feeling of Finlandia well 'cause Finland gained the independence from Russian empire like my home country overcame the imperial invaders.
Sibelius and his beloved Finlandia homeland... Greetings from Turkey ❤
Beautiful music, beautiful landscapes, beautiful animals. Just perfection.
I love Finland. I'll be back there next January.
Welcome back remember to see as many things as you can
Roberto Caldas welcome I live here in Vaasa
Roberto Caldas you're welcome i live in Rovaniemi
Hope you had a good trip :)
Mä en ole suomalainen mutta kunnioituksesta sanon suomeksi tämä on todella kaunis! (Sorry for the awful Finnish, but I love your country!) :)
Your Finnish was almost perfect so you have nothing to apologize for.
Very few people take that effort to learn a new language that's very different to your own. You should feel proud of your accomplishment.
I hope you'll visit us some day. If you choose to do so, I'd be glad to be your host (I live in Espoo, near Helsinki).
Miten osaat suomea
Oh thank you! I appreciate your detication. (im not the best at english)
Thankyou for that, I appreciate it😊
I'm finnish btw
There was nothing wrong with your finnish
unfortunately history repeats itself. Once more has this song started playing in the hearts of our people, the hearts of our soldiers. You can take our land, but as long as there are Finns, we will fight for our freedom. Stay strong.
What are you talking about?
@@imochonai5723 Russia threatening us

They actually are?
This national romantic poem was composed 1899 at the times of russification. It brings so much more power when you know the history of this poem. This became a symbol of the battle against the russification in Finland.
@@danayang7712 seems you do not know much of Finland.
Sibelius did this composition during the strugling years when we finns were living under our neighbors power. It is so powering music that it makes me cry everytime I hear it and makes me proad to be from Finland.
Very beautiful.
From a neighbour in Norway
This is history of all about Finland - wich is very beautiful country and just like this music tells for you .

You should visit Lapland, huge snowy mountains specially in northern lapland 😉
I would love to visit Finland some day ❤❤❤❤ must be a beautiful country
I feel very out of place in this comment section considering the fact that I’m not even Finnish. I’ve just played this piece in orchestra and absolutely loved it
Part of the reason I came to live in Finland in 1969 was the depth of feeling and history that Finlandia conveys and I still shed a tear or two when I hear it. I am very proud and thankful to have become a Finn.
Brian Forder proud to have you here, buddy!
Thank you sir. Tervetuloa veli.
You can't "become a finn" you either are one or aren't, you are born into it.
@@kookoo9235 well anyone can become a Finn if they integrate themselves to finnish Culture, religion and society even if they weren't born in Finland (kinda how europeans immigrants integrated themselfs to america). However nowdays most immigrants don't speak finnish sadly or be part of its culture or society (and I mean immigrants from all continents , not just africans or arabs)
@@pickymapping6098 Nope, unless you are ethnically finn then you are not a finn, that's just how it is.
Amazing country, love Finland, greetings from El Salvador.

Hello Puerto Rico.. the land of happy people:))) Wish I could come there one day:)
Greetings from England . I worked with the Finns in Lipetsk USSR in 1984--86 What a great bunch of guys they were . Thanks and Good luck Finland
if u r finnish, you understand this song, and the emotion that it shows perfectly. It is a perfect musical description of finland and its people
I grew up right after the war, when Kekkonen was ”a mere minister”, and remember the poverty and the chaos of the ”years of danger” when the Soviet Union still held presence in Finland. It was a time of turmoil, Helsinki was just starting to recover and ever new people moved in from the former Karelia, and the streets were dominated by black market operators, war-torn trouble makers and us, the young guys with our ”flat hats” and oil-slicked hair, trying to make it in this new urban environment. -E.K.
🎉🎊Today we celebrate 105th Finnish independence day🎉🎊! Hope everyone is having A nice Independence day, whether your from Finland or Africa!
105th*
I always though this was British, "I Vow to Thee, My Country" is a British patriotic hymn, created in 1921... I checked... Finlandia, Op. 26, is a tone poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was written in 1899 and revised in 1900. I blame my culture-specific ignorance. Beuatiful video... 6:09... the audio is also wonderful :D
What a beautiful country💕 Greetings from the Philippines🇵🇭🇫🇮
*Someday I wish to visit this beautiful country, Greetings from Brazil* 🇧🇷❤
Welcome. do not stay in Helsinki. Go to war zones. Raatteentie etc. You walk through the woods, you see moats and war traces. Even ghosts have been seen in the battlefields. Look This video in raatteentie: ua-cam.com/video/zHis7g3sPtQ/v-deo.html).

This is my highschool alma mater song. What a beautiful place
I played this masterpiece for the first time as a young girl. I still love it today. In this music, I hear winter turning to spring and the Finns' (or the Ukrainians', or the Slovenes'...)fight for freedom.
Slovenians, Ukrainians, and rest of eastern Europeans have those beautiful European forms. Russia has sadly mostly lost them, maybe forever.
But it can't get them from Europe, at least by force.
