  • M.A. graduation project. Animation based on the poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - Der Erlkönig. Music by Marek Kuczyński.
    Describtion and making of: www.behance.net/gallery/29918...
    Who rides so late through the night and wind?
    It's the father with his child;
    He has the boy safe in his arm,
    He holds him secure, he holds him warm.
    “My son, what makes you hide your face in fear?” -
    Father, don't you see the Erlking?
    The Erlking with crown and flowing robe? -
    “My son, it's a wisp of fog.” -
    “You dear child, come along with me!
    Such lovely games I'll play with you;
    Many colorful flowers are at the shore,
    My mother has many a golden garment.”
    My father, my father, and do you not hear
    What the Erlking promises me so softly? -
    “Be quiet, stay quiet, my child;
    In the dry leaves the wind is rustling.” -
    “Won't you come along with me, my fine boy?
    My daughters shall attend to you so nicely.
    My daughters do their nightly dance,
    And they'll rock you and dance you and sing you to sleep.”
    My father, my father, and do you not see over there
    Erlking's daughters in that dark place? -
    “My son, my son, I see it most definitely:
    It's the willow trees looking so grey.”
    “I love you; I'm charmed by your beautiful form;
    And if you're not willing, then I'll use force.”
    My father, my father, now he's grabbing hold of me!
    Erlking has done me harm! -
    The father shudders, he rides swiftly,
    He holds in arms the moaning child.
    He reaches the farmhouse with effort and urgency.
    In his arms the child was dead.

    I really loved the switch in perspective when the son sees the Erlkönig. The immediate tonal shift and the way everything slowed down really sold the delirious state he was in.

      @Наталья Игишева but that's what's amazing about the poem: that it admits that reading as well as others.

    Wow!!! Very impressive. It is also my understanding that in the boy's illness, he starts to hallucinate and passed away, which is what many other versions of visual stories missed.
    Well done!

      @Наталья Игишева @sufiwho the poem is probably, more simply, just about the actual fae and the seelie/unseelie/sidhe court that just totally "did" this stuff all the time and goethe based his poem of the danish ballad "elveskud," in which the elf king's daughter is actually the antagonist. the wild hunt especially would just follow people around, especially if there was a battle going on, and take them for various reasons. if you hear a ruckus in the sky, it was them and you just didn't want to attract their attention-- or else! lol. (unless you're from other western or eastern cultures in which it was other processions of demons, ghosts, fae, gods like thor or freya, etc. though it still had the same dire consequences.) it's the whole mythos of cold iron, changelings and fetches, all that stuff. it's so interesting, but hella eerie if you put yourself in those poor people's shoes and have no other explanation.

    • @kaamn1829
      @kaamn1829 3 роки тому +2

      @Наталья Игишева but the horse would've gotten spooked at anything, that's horses. and most animals, lol. the fae ride horses and in many cases _are_ the horses. though they definitely killed the boy through sickness as the entire fairy/faery thing was often what we could consider just neurodivergent and sickness and plagues weren't actually devils etc. 'changelings' were often just kids who had autism or adhd and or spoke their mind in unbecoming ways (bridget cleary's a famous case in that last instance).

    I know that this animation is supposed to be an illustration for the poem by Goethe, but with how this animation turned out the story that goes through my head when watching this is as follows :
    This is the sequel of the poem and the man is the same father with the poem. He has since moved on and have another son. But under some circumstances he and his second son have to pass through the forest quickly. Unfortunately, like the first, the second son also caught the Erlking's attention and tepted the child (or it could be said that the child caught the same illness with his brother's and halucinates again). The second child almost gave in but then the father snapped him out of it and rushed through the forest, this time safely.

    woah, I think the choice you made here to have the child be the one reaching out to the Erl-King and the father the one desperately running, slapping his hand away, is _so_ poignant. Along with the attention to detail, all the little bits in the background, the way the shadows meld into full beings and the leaves fall--- this is just so eerie and exhilarating at the same time. I love it!

    FANTASTICNO. WUNDERBAR. BRVO.
    EVO SRPSKOG PREVODA:
    BAUK
    Ko jezdi tako pozno kroz noć i vetar taj?
    To otac sa čedom svojim kroz pusti jaše kraj;
    Dok vije vihor besni i strašna seče stud,
    On dete svoje grli, o toplu greje grud.
    "Što sine skrivaš tako lice i pogled svoj?"
    -Bauka zar ne vidiš, oče u noći toj?
    Bauka, krunu onu i njegov dugi skut?
    "To, sine, noćne magle prelaze neba put."
    " O drago čedo, hodi i pođi samnom ti!
    Prekrasne igre mnoge s tobom ću igrati,
    Po obalama cveće šareno ćemo brat'
    Majka će moja tebi zlaćeno ruho dat."
    O oče, zar ne čuješ šta zbori bauk taj,
    Kako me tiho zove i mami u svoj kraj?
    "Smiri se, čedo moje, to nije bio glas
    Iz suhog lišća vetar pozdravlja šumom nas..."
    "Hoćeš li, slatko cedo, hoćeš li kraju mom?
    Tebe će moje kćeri paziti ljubavlju svom
    One će noću igrat' lagani tanac svoj
    I ljuljaće te brižno i pevat' slatki poj"
    O oče, zar ne vidiš otkud u onaj mrak
    Da baukove kćeri rukom mi daju znak?
    "Da čedo moje, vidim, al' tebe vara gled
    To noćni vetar starih povija vrba red..."
    "Ja volim čedo tebe i lice što ti sja,
    Nećeš li milom, silom odneću tebe ja!"
    O oče, on me hvata, bauk me grabi sad,
    Bauk mi, oče, evo zadade bol i jad!
    Dubokom prožet jezom otac uskori gred
    U naručju mu sinak od bola bled,
    A kad je pred dom stig'o s mukom i jadom svim,
    Mrtvo je čedo bilo na grudima njegovim.

    Brilliant. The only """complaint""" I have, is that I wished the music your friend made sounded a little more like the song made from the poem! :P

    Terrific and terrifying. Happier ending than most erlkonig productions and this wasn’t a happy ending lol

      The leaf at the end falling and withering resembles the death of the child

    Przepiękne. Gratuluję zdania na magistra (bo master to magister, tak?). I animacja zgadza się nawet z moją interpretacją na lekcji, z czego się cieszę (przynajmniej chociaż to mi się udało).
    A podpinając się do komentarzy innych: Polka mieszkająca w Niemczech, która spędza czas praktycznie tylko na angielsko-języcznych platformach i społecznościach (yuhu)

    Fun Fact:
    'Erl' was the old german word for 'Elven'
    So the Erlking was the german version of an Elvenking

      That's actually wrong. Goethe changed the name from "Elfkönig" from a scandinavian fairytale with an Intention. "Erl" referes to european "Erlen", which are trees, so that it wouldn't be directly connected to a fairytale. instead he wanted the poem to be close to nature and these kind of images. But it's definitely not an old german word for elves.

    I saw that the Eris Tribute with the Song 'Our solemn hour' is one of yours too and that you might still have it..
    Is that true and could you send it? I loved it.. one of the best works I've seen so far
