Famitsu's Other Worst Game - Pachinko CR Daiku no Gen-San GB

  • Three games have received a cumulative score of twelve out forty from Famitsu magazine. I've already talked about Pro Golfer Saru on the Wii, so now I'm looking at Pachinko CR Daiku no Gen-San GB and there's more going on than you might expect.

    CR is not for character at all! It’s for Card Reader. It was meant to identify a new kind of pachinko/pachislo which accepted prepaid cards.

    This is a terrifying sentence coming from you.

    Kenny Lauderdale also mentioned that goofy monkey man golf game as worst ever but I didn’t know how much Famitsu - as the video game rag of record - gets such a bee in their bonnet over the best/worst ever. Trawling through scans of old famitsu magazines is fun, and hopefully VGHF will have machine translation for all of this one of these days

    I've gotten the impression that Famitsu might a have a similar situation to that of Rolling Stone: certain people loosely adjacent to what interests these magazines cover hold them in high regard, especially because they've been around for decades. But outside of the magazine fanboys, those with the actual interests they cover tend to roll their eyes at them and take quite a bit of what is said by those magazines with a grain of salt. I feel like it's a case of certain critics and professionals being out-of-touch with what many fans and creators actually like and want; plus, those critics and professionals not getting it that their audience isn't a monolith (and a monolith that shares their views, on top of that). That is to say, these magazines aren't always off-the-mark, but they often feel that way.

    Okay, now I get why nobody discusses this game in the West. It's honestly quite an achievement to screw-up a pachinko game this badly... now we just need the worst sugoroku game and the worst baseball game to complete the quadrilogy of doom.

    I live in a mid-sized city and not even in the most central area but there are three, count 'em, THREE large pachinko/slot parlors within walking distance. One even has a (not really particularly good) food court attached to it! And all of them take up a huge amount of land for parking space... in a land starved country!
    There are a couple of traditional parlors running old school machines in Osaka (I know there was one in Shinsekai as of a few years ago) including old horse’s trough looking machines (as Roland Barthes described them) and extremely old school pre-80's "analog" machines that don't really use electricity and are completely mechanical in nature.
    They're really just tourist attractions, though. Kind of like that movie theater that showed old pinku and yakuza movies from the 70's.

      As a fun game, you can zoom out on Google maps so all of Japan is visible, then click a random spot with streetview and see how long it takes you to find a pachislot place.
      I knew that there were places that still had electromechanical pachinko around, but they're basically "retroarcades".

    What a coincidence, I was looking up this Pachinko earlier in the day. What was shocking to me when I was looking it up was that the real-life Carpenter Gen Pachinko (the actual Pachinko that the video games were based on) had a guidebook that I found on eBay. I didn't even know that Pachiknos had guidebooks in the first place.

    Great video! That game really is dire... A few minor corrections to the background section:
    * Pachi-slot is actually a different game, a slot machine with individual stop buttons for each reel. So "digi-pachi" pachinko is even closer to a slot machine than pachi-slot
    * CR stands for Card Reader, not "Character"; the prefix in the title here stresses how this was based off of a real machine (so having worse odds and being a bad simulation... ruins it completely lol)

      I STILL facepalm whenever I hear people make those Konami pachinko jokes. Because it's such a weird meme, seeing as Konami is FAR from being any number of the worst offenders when it comes to this. For some reason, people love to make a joke out of Konami doing it, even though that's so incredibly misleading. But yet, this meme persists for some reason. It's like sayng "Ah yes, Activision... as we all know, they're known for one thing and one thing only... releasing all those Spider-Man games. And nothing else. When you think Spider-Man, you think Activision." Like, ok? Yeah, they HAVE released some. I hardly think that's the notable thing about their company most people would say.

    • @FelisImpurrator
      @FelisImpurrator Місяць тому +3

      @@thenightstar8312 And yet you haven't given any of these counterexamples that makes it "misleading". The meme exists because they very prominently pivoted away from investing in their flagship videogame franchises a few years back, but still continued to license those same IPs in the form of pachislot machines. Nowadays it's still fairly quiet on the "new original Konami IP projects" front, with most of the licensing deals going to outsourced remakes and crossover DLC, but the specific context is from the 2010s when they seemed to be markedly more invested in, well, pachinko than ever letting us see any new Silent Hill or Castlevania. A more fitting analogy would be EA continuing to pump out FIFA games right around the time they weren't doing what they are now and investing a substantial amount into cool indie titles like Tales of Kenzera.

      Maybe as a placebo for gambling addicts? Although personally, I think they're pointless because they lose the physicality of actual machines. There is a simple pleasure in watching the balls rain down, plinking away. But that's almost totally lost when it's a (usually bad) physics sim.

      At least from the production side, I wonder if *archival* might be a big factor. We've all seen the youtube videos where some classic anime or videogame got highlight reels of amazing moments, or brand new story content, in the form of pachislot machines. But in the era before you could send off a dead game by making a (probably unofficial) compilation, I could see things like the PS1 version being a way to package that creative work and ensure fans of the original property get to see that stuff down the line.
      Now, I'm as lost as you on the appeal of playing digital pachinko in and of itself. But still.

    • @RndStranger
      @RndStranger  21 день тому

      @@nicky2stars One of the most important aspects of board game design (and, well, game design in general), is that the player should have a meaningful effect on the outcome of the game. A lot of bad old games (as well as plenty of gambling games) do not have this. Consider Candyland: a player draws a card, moves to that space and perhaps occasionally gets moved to another place on the board. The outcome of the game is decided when the deck is shuffled, the participation of the player is meaningless.
      Sugoroku is one step above that, adding a random element that results from where you move, but it's still Candyland. The best a player might hope for is choosing between two paths and that's not a choice with any real weight to it. The result of the game is decided by the dice, spinner, or whatever random number generator is used, not by the player's actions or skill or strategy.
