  • Over the course of Famidaily, I've talked about a lot of different things that you could use with your Famicom. Now it's time for a few that didn't get showcased.

The famicom’s networking capabilities are so interesting to me. I have the famicom network system, HVC-050, and cartridges for JRA-PAT and Super Mario Club. They don’t do much besides generate network error codes, and an animation of Mario and Luigi on pogo sticks for SMC, but they’re fascinating historical pieces.

The Super Famicom version of the Ascii Stick would be perfect for the Lennus games. In those games, you select all of the battle commands with the d-pad.

You know, sometimes I forget that the Famicom controllers were mostly hard wired to the console
Must've been annoying alot of the time
But I guess that's also some of the console's charm of being created that early on

While I consider the NES an inferior product overall, the detachable controllers WERE a real upgrade.

I'm not sure if you want to cover them, even when you go through all the FDS games, since they're unlicensed and used for piracy, but there are also the "Game Doctor"* units. As you may already know, they converted cartridge games to a disk format using QuickDisks with subsequent generation ls of hardware supporting more mappers. *Not all of the units had Game Doctor in the name (since they were made by different companies), but they all used a similar file format.

My favorite Famicom controller that's a bit offbeat is Capcom's mahjong controller, it actually makes playing the Ide Yosuke Mahjong games really quite good! But then I'm someone who likes Mahjong. It's just quirky and I like it for that.

I absolutely love weird controllers, and I had many when I had a NES collection. I still got unique controllers when I moved on to other systems, like the N64 or Dreamcast (also with weird controllers/add-ons.) Now that I have a Famicom, I have yet to get any of the extra controllers that came for it. I'm still hoping to find cheap ones! I am very much interested in everything from the Hypershot to the Hypershot machine gun.

I have and enjoy the L5, but it’s one biggest issue is that unlike it’s later iterations for other consoles is that the Famicom version is asymmetrical. And I’m left handed, meaning I can’t use the L5 as intended: to play while making notes and maps.

wow! I knew the famicom had some interesting peripherals, but this had a bunch I was not aware of! IIRC there WAS a US release of one of the one-handed controllers though I might've been thinking of the playstation one. forget if the SNES version also released here as well, but the PS one for sure. that turbo controller sounds like a hell of a thing though... definitely sounds like a lot of the programmable-style controllers I saw ads for the 16-bit systems in game mags of the day.

I've been eyeing on some of the controllers particularly the one handed ASCII controller that I'm wondering can be a good fit for puzzle games like Tetris
