Great video, I have loved Rastan since its launch in '86! One fun technical note... The smoothly animated swinging vines seen in the game were achieved with a particle effect. They even show it off by making the separate pixel particles different colors. And it was actually a reused effect that they created for Jungle King/Hunt several years earlier!

Ah one of my all time favorites! A shining example of how to squeeze every ounce of goodness from the limited resources available to arcade systems. Even today I'm still amazed at the sound and what they were able to do with it. I have the tunes downloaded and listen to them now and then when I want a pick me up. The animations and colors were all top notch and hold up for arcade games even today. This was one of the games I worked at mastering as a kid and eventually could one-life the game. I was able to do this with several other games (Black Tiger, Akari Warriors, Spy Hunter, Discs of Tron, etc etc).....yup, spent tons of time in arcades. Great video! Thanks for making it :)

Crazy Story, The first time I played this amazing atmospheric game I also met Frank Stallone in Astoria Queens NYC, Yes Sly's brother in the same Deli that had the cabinet I was playing Rastan in 1987 and he came in the deli where I played it, my mom started talking to him because she instantly recognized him, and he had a music school on Steinway street, I met him and told him he was a great singer in that street scene in Rocky and he was a nice guy. I went back into playing Rastan and the music it stuck with me. Years later I bought a rastan cabinet from a warehouse in Coney Island for 300, I had it for four years until I sold it and later bought a slim Galaga arcade cabinet being I had moved and needed something slimmer, I regret that decision. Anyway this game's music is burned into me, This is when Taito hit the ball out of the park and from that point had a slew of games with awesome music and audio, and wow what a bassy cabinet when you put a coin in and hear that Damm slam, great years for Taito

They had Rastan there which I believe was the Japanese version or test. The bats never came out if you stalled anywhere. Also the generic enemies that are abundant in green were black on the version I played. Didn’t know there was an Apple IIGS version which I would have gotten for sure! However, the scrolling is wobbly and tears quite a bit. BRAVO for including the Amiga version - which is being made right now. You are right up to date! So far, the Amiga version looks amazing: great graphics and both scrolling & animation are beautifully smooth. And it does the music perfectly! Love this game, but not being allowed to continue on the last stage sucks. One interesting thing, the poison item only does a little damage and gives a ton of points, so it's actually not a bad idea to grab it since it'll usually get you close to an extra life.

You don't jump higher with a longer button push and there are 7 songs. Opening song (not in the US version) Main theme, castle, boss fight, level clear, final boss fight and the ending theme.

Great video - earned a welll deserved sub from me.
There were a few highlights of this video for me. The MSDOS port has the best graphics I've ever seen in a EGA game and it seems that might've pipped Commander Keen to being the first scrolling platform game on the PC. Why does no-one ever mention that!? The Apple IIGS port is the best Apple IIGS arcade port I've seen so amazing work Novalogic for doing those ports. The other highlight of this video was learning of Warrior Blade which I hope is supported by MAME so I can check that out.
Speaking of MAME, this video was missing my fave Rastan fact. Rastan was the first 16 bit / m68k arcade game emulated by MAME, hence a significant milestone in MAME and arcade emulation.
I wasn't surprised to see Barbarian get mentioned. Barbarian is currently getting ported to the open source Uzebox console so I look forward to playing that soon.

There is as bug in Rastan where if you jump right on a rope and there is a wall immediately to the right of the rope you will jump up and then grab the rope again ascending much faster (does not work the other way around) Also when you are airborne you do more damage to enemies then when you are on the ground. If you jump toward the annoying first boss and strike it in the air it dies in three hits that was my strategy for dealing with it back in the day. EDIT: I vaguely recall that most enemies take more damage when struck in the head area as well so it's possible it dies that fast due to stacking airborne damage with increased damage from the head hitzone.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I only do 2.5D remakes. Every young kid game developer uses pixels these days, I could rom-hack the original instead of using a modern engine, if I wanted just that. I got tired of pixels in the 90's! 😁
