Have you seen the Jordan Peterson and Cathy Newman debate?
See for yourself how he deals with it and give us your opinion in the comments!
We've all found ourselves in conversation and felt attacked like we started off talking about one thing and then the other person twisted our words and before we knew it, we lost our cool, lost respect in their eyes, and maybe even acted like a jerk. Now, I don't normally do the same person twice in a row but this interview between Cathy Newman and Jordan Peterson was just too interesting of an opportunity to discuss how you can handle someone who uses subtle conversational tricks to bully you into looking dumb. So in this video, you're gonna see firsthand some of the most common tricks that people might be using on you and you're also gonna learn how to reverse those so that you can walk out of a kind of aggressive situation having earned more respect than you had going in.
So first off, to stop a conversational bully, you have to realize what's going on before it's too late. Now, typically, a person will reveal their aggressive attitude early on with their tone of voice and their word choice. Check out the rest that we will show in this video and how Jordan Peterson tackles them.
1:49 Jordan Peterson deals with so-you're-saying trap
2:39 Jordan Peterson deals with the "assuming the sale"
5:30 Jordan Peterson deals with the smash technique
7:08 But don't straw man the other person's ideas though
7:47 And visual imagery can also help
8:25 You can show them that they're already agreeing with you

My tactic is to exaggerate, in a bombastic and exaggerated fashion, in the following way: "Oh my God! That's exactly right, boy you hit the nail right on the head, no doubt about it! It's like you're in my head or something! I mean WOW! You even got all the punctuation down with your inflection, and I have to hand it to you, wow, yup exactly down to the last molecule, a precise word for word rendition of not only what I said but what I meant by it, which by the way is exactly what I said. " Then I sit back beaming smugly at them because I called them a liar in a very sarcastic way. Nobody wants to argue with me anymore after that. Nasty, I know, but it has been several years since I realized there is no way to convert a fanatic so the best you can do is cut the interaction to a minimum and hope they die soon.

He actually felt bad about not being able to refrain himself from saying that. He has explained several times that there he lost the opportunity to have an actual intellectual conversation based on that topic. He could have redirected the "debate" to what he pursues, logical expositions. Instead he himself admitted later that he lost his temper there and with it, the gateway to completely change the discussion.

@@Jayako12 i really doubt that this conversation actually could have turned into an honest, intellectual debate. Not under these circumstances. Even if she started to understand and maybe even agree to what he was saying, which to an extent i think she started to do at that very moment, there is no way she would have abandoned her agenda while being on live TV.
In a private conversation? Possibly, but not in this situation.

This level of clarity and mental speed is not achieved by simple tips and tactics. This shows a long time of commitment to truth. When you commit to saying what you think is true, it will be easy to see clearly what's in front of you, see through people's bs, see through the games, call things out and quickly be able to straighten distorted arguments. Once you choose true, life will become the best adventure of your life.

So I learned from an early age the art of letting the other person have my idea. I have since used this successfully in business and personal life for decades. People get so hung up on making sure people know something was "their" idea, that they miss out on having it widely adopted.

I had a boss do that when I was representing another worker's interest. I just sat back patiently and let him vent his anger until he ran out of steam. Then I calmly asked him if we could discuss the subject now he had got that off his chest. Needless to say I walked out of that room with everything I went in there to get, and the worker was delighted that I had won for him. If you lose your rag, you are going to lose the argument, and that boss knew that. So did Cathy Newman. If Jordan had lost his rag at any moment she would have made mincemeat out of him.

@Bill Carson Saying everyone In the context I used it is referring to everyone who actually has done something which is not a generalisation.
Not only can we stop generalising by simply! acknowledging not everything is so clack and white and using language to reflect that such as those/some/ most etc but even when this is not an option it is no justification for the use of extremely ridiculous, absurd not to mention highly judgmental not to mention wrong sweeping generalisations such as you saying all members of the left lack any principles!
As for the political spectrum its complicated and their are no easy answers but I do know the extremes of both are bad also one party states have definitely been shown to be bad.
/ you can never entirely get rid of the concept of government force to handle necessary situations Ie you are forced to fund the military. police, fire services I mean things are sometimes needed for society to function its just about how much but stop acting like its just a concept that only will even exist with the left.
also major concept of conservatives is that tradition trumps everything and that's a problem for me because traditionally slavery was ok/ the US was ruled by England etc tradition isn't good just by its nature, you have to judge
individual things on its merit but people won't do that because their too busy picking sides.

The “gotcha” was intentional. Jordan talked about this interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Cathy was super friendly and polite in the green room before airing, putting him at ease, then intentionally turned and tried to frame him poorly during it. She was trying to set him up to look like the straw man she was constructing. He hit her with that because there was no chance of her finding common ground with him. She was intentionally refusing to. It was a jab back at her to make her choke up on trying to use that gotcha tactic herself.

However in this particular interview she failed, I don't know what happened , I don't know. Let's just say I hope she learned from this experience. The "gotcha" was a human reaction. Jordan has said that before the interview, Cathy was very polite to him and they were having a nice conversation. Once the interview started, she switched from having a conversation into a pre-defined character with motives other than just seeking the truth. She is not trying to have a conversation with Jordan, she is trying to create sound bites and achieve some sort of victory over him.
The gotcha was from having to be patient and put up with this nonsense and knocked her completely out of the character that she had been playing. Frankly, he was a lot more polite than 99% of the rest of us would have been.

What an interesting presentation. Mr. Peterson is someone who deserves to be listened to. He is usually interesting but will often stray from what could actually be a straight answer. No harm no foul. A direct approach as a response will often lead to a mid point where both can come away with something that they both can live with; even if it may appear as a truce. He is a sensitive and easily offended person. He often becomes defensive where no offense is worth noting. Generally the best approach here is to back away and search for an answer that brings you onto a common ground. When someone is clearly offended by an answer, they would be better served by disengaging from any opposition. Better to change the direction of the conversation where your response will deflect the point of view of the questioner rather than starting a debate with them. Once the discussion has turned that way, there will be nothing gained by continuing.
Before continuing as before, one might profit greatly by stepping back and observing where things may have gone wrong. The quickest way to evaluate the situation might be to search for another approach while remembering the Teaching of Sun Tzu. When caught in a standoff it may be best to withdraw from the situation and wait for the tide to change.

I remember something like this happening to me back in college. I was eating lunch with some of my fellow math tutors when I made an off-hand remark that had something to do with women's brains having larger language processing centers than men's. Immediately after saying that, the girl sitting next to me (also a math tutor) barked at me, "there's no evidence that men are better at math than women!" Caught off guard, my mind raced to come up with a counter argument. After a second of contemplation, it dawned on me that I didn't actually believe men were inherently better at math and never said anything to that effect. I slowly turned to look at her and calmly asked, "when did I say anything about math?" She immediately backed off, finished her meal in silence, and left about five minutes later.
And GOSH DARN did it ever feel good! Oh yeah, and don't lose your cool or whatever...

The best thing about the way Peterson speaks of he doesn't rush to fill the silence. He takes his time to think and choose the right words.

Just stumbled onto your content and this is great stuff. As someone who suffered from social anxiety from a young age, it's taken a huge blow to my ability to communicate effectively during contention. I'll have to dive deeper into each of these concepts to get a better understanding. Thank you!

Yeah, it was the one provocative move from his side.
While it does go against his usual approach of not making people look stupid however, I think it was still a bit different:
More along the lines of a teacher teasing "do you see what I mean now?" after the student inadvertently demonstrated the teacher's point.
(For those wondering, it's at 10:00.)

Even tho I liked the 3 seconds she didn't speak, I don't think she was even listening to what he was saying. I think she was listening to her director on the earpiece and waiting for a response.

Contrary to where the presenters says how the “Ha Gotcha” weakened Dr. Peterson’s argument. I believe he actually said that to release the tension as a mood lightening joke. Which is actually helping Kathy move past her moment of speechless fumblement.
To a outside observer it may seem like a jab while she’s down but to her it was a kind opportunity to re establish the flow of conversation and save face.

Watching this conversation progress actualy hilighted to me that I already do effectively recognise and confront these pitfalls and traps in everyday conversation without having to intentionally watch out for them as such .which comes naturaly if you really are listening to what others say to you and consider being precise about your wording before you speak .i think that it follows that if you practise trying to convey to people in conversation exactly what you mean then you do also look carefully at their wording to ascertain its validity in the context that they're being applied. The ones that you should walk away from and disregard are those who have to be right now matter the level of denial that they have to embed themselves in to do it .I know one person at least ,an older guy i work with who is so set in his own ways that he reacts defensively, to even rather shallow depth that I present in my points of view. That ."So your saying phrase "! Coupled with a strongly dismissive attitude. But it isn't about what I'm saying at all ,and is really about him choosing not to listen properly because he cannot cope with the complication of details .being drawn into discussing details that butt up against his frustration and impatience seem to be the true cause of the issue .

The whole C4 news agenda is biased. Ceased watching its gladiatorial style and now far far happier. This was tame compared to Brexit coverage where leavers are castigated and belittled at will. The program is designed for a minority elite audience of the metropolitan chattering classes. It's farcical to hear apologies for bad language on the green opposite parliament full of protesters. C4's audience no longer connect with reality.

The heads were butting well before the slap down came......and a well experienced? Professor? ! Should have had the fortitude to notice and pay Attention to how mutual communication can be achieved and perhaps Wake himself up from his self imposed false relaxed body technique.....which in fact reflected a mirror image of the opposition! A clenched fist however implied is not a communication skill for projecting understanding....Except “I am right whatever you are going to imply...I know I do!” What did he achieve except.....He needs more serviceable skills in the communication-Understanding arena!
