I was in a very elevated state of anxiety at the time. My condition would be obvious to someone like him, but for me, from the moment we shook hands I felt the immediate change in my demeaner. An immediate calming down, foot off the gas, take a moment to breath type of change. The type of antidote a guy like Jordan Peterson is very good at administering. It felt real and it felt sincere. Like he took the weight from my shoulders and carried it away. Apparently it was noticeable 'cause when I went back upstairs to my son's room I had quite the glow on. I was asked "why so happy all of a sudden?". I met Jordan Peterson.

One of the best, and honestly hardest to implement, pieces of advice I've gotten is to talk to other people as if they have something important they could teach you.

    • @justinz9225
      @justinz9225 5 років тому +13

Just to be clear, not everyone has something important to teach you. But act that way.
People try to pin JP down on that one all the time. "Aren't you supposed to act as if someone has something to teach you?" Sure, but that doesn't mean you're obliged to automatically agree with them. You may never. It's just a concession that you don't know everything.

Well, everyone has something, positive, negative, as examples that one can learn from. Every person, no matter their intelligence or education or life's circumstances was made as an individual.... with no one on earth being 100% identical. Every person has value.... maybe some contribute to mankind more than others, but there is a takeaway, large or miniscule from everyone. Hard to remember that sometimes for me as I let other things become more important than people sometimes. I need to be cognizant of that always. Have a good one, friends.

I saw something from Peterson in one of those final clips that I don’t think I’ll ever see his contemporaries, specifically people who specialize in “owning” their opponents (biggest example in my mind being Ben Shapiro), he’s just standing with his hand on his chin, calmly listening to the opinions of the person who’s talking to him. It conveys a deep respect for not just the person, but for their intelligence and right to have an opinion, and I think that’s what gains him respect during and after debates. Unlike people who indulge in shouting matches to feed their ego or widen their echo chamber, he appears to have a deep respect for the other person, which makes it easier for them to respect him in turn.
Tl;dr: An easy way to gain respect is by first showing someone else that respect, people are more likely to show you respect if they themselves feel respected.

Thanks for the breakdown! Learned some great things.
To address the first point: Peterson is an avid thinker and I'm not sure if he's consciously doing the "That's a good point" technique. I rather believe that to arrive at a conclusion he really believes in, he has this internal dialogue with himself, where he plays both sides of the argument. That also ties into the "you"s and hypotheticals that he uses, as these are his habits of discussing with himself. It's like a constant training for your brain to switch from perspective to perspective in an argument, which is now ingrained into him.
That's how he's able to say "That's a good point" with conviction as it is something he has seriously considered before judging.

I think it's also nice how Jordan extends empathy to the other persons position in the conversation without ignoring the danger of their position when it is something like the regulation of speech which should not be made light of. In other words he has the capacity to patiently hear their position and strongly criticize it simultaneously.

Unless you just like beating people over the head with your unaddressed self-righteousness which is unhealthy to you and annoying to others). It may have something to do with people identify too much with their opinions. With the demise of many social institutions in many people’s lives. - religion, the local community, ethnic identification even their family - people form their sense of self around their opinions and become very emotional in defending them. Little realising that they’re going to at least modify their opinions throughout their lives through experience and learning if they are a person open to change. There is nothing sadder than someone in their 50s and 60s with the same opinions as they had in their 20s.

Well, I would argue that's only respectable if the movement you're leading is respectable. Hell, Adolf Hitler "lead by example in a difficult situation." That "down time" you spend thinking in a debate likely seems much longer to you (in your own head) than to anyone else. So don't force yourself to answer immediately - you're better off with a 5 second pause that lets you collect yourself than immediately jumping into a rambling response. If you've ever watched Elliott Hulse speak on camera (we have a video on him) he does an excellent job of allowing these breaks. If done right, without filler words, this time you take to collect your thoughts actually captures more attention because of the pregnant pause

Embrace the speed of your thought processes. Generally speaking, taking time actually makes for a more well-rounded response that shows you grappled with the topic, and not just saying the first thing off the top.
If you pace your delivery (pausing to give people time to digest your words) as well as your thought process, you come across as someone who is knowledgeable as opposed to slow. Because you own the pauses, people will naturally listen more closely and take what you're saying on board. Chances are you're not as slow to respond as you think anyway - just look at the number of commas I used typing this lol

    Don't mistake respect with fear.
Fear can only keep people in line as long as it persists.
Respect does not need constant show of force if even at all.

Those who respect you, will stay loyal or at least neutral.

Fear and respect do go hand in hand, however it's not as simple as it sounds. Fear(itself) is not respect as it invokes pressure and an uncomfortable, defensive yet cautious mindset into people. When feared, people listen to you indefinitely to avoid confrontation and truthfully lack affection and *Respect* towards you. Respect is when someone projects your worth and has affection for you because they feel you are affectionate towards them yet they *Fear* the absence of your affection for them. I respect God so I hold fear towards him. Fear is the absence of respect. Respect is the absence of hatred.

If you take a winny, anxious and insecure kid practicing the same techniques as Mr Peterson, he will only be seen as agreeable and afraid of conflict.
This is just my opinion thou, you are sharing value with this video, these are indeed good points for getting respect, but as long as you dont fix you communications skills in a deeper level, no one - and I repeat - NO ONE will be compelled to listen. We make judgemente of who deserves our attention and respect in the first fraction of a second we meet, and we finish our assumptions by about 7 seconds. That being said, if you happen to present a weak impression, no amount of diplomacy and dialogue will change their opinion, even if you have the most important thing to say.

You have to have respect for other people and you have to have respect for yourself.
If you are missing either one, other people will not respect you.
And believe it or not, those two can coexist.

I absolutely love someone who goes out of their comfort zones and goes against their own beliefs or the narrative that they have believed for one reason or another, some of which they may not even remember. Pick a topic you believe in then research against your own bias. Do this on a regular basis and watch yourself, your knowledge and your positions change.

I have this saved on one of my playlists, I think it is very insightful. I think we can put it into practice best by embracing the principals and honing our character. I think the principals are a respect and genuine care for all people and an empathy with their journey of trying to understand life. If this was taken as tools and techniques to gain respect and change peoples minds then it misses the point and people will see through it. I’ve heard people teach ways of showing that you are listening, leaning in, nodding head occasionally etc. Then I heard someone cut through all that who said, ‘ never mind trying to look like you are listening, just really listen and concentrate on trying to understand.’, concentrating on caring for someone else.

To point 1, my philosophy: If I can't argue FOR my opposition, then I can't argue AGAINST them.
Seeing where they come from is necessary to connect, but it's also a safeguard for your personal beliefs. If they're not worthy of being challenged, then they're not worthy of having, let alone sharing.
I have massive respect for Peterson specifically because he's so calm and gracious whenever he can and should be, but he refrains from being a pushover. He can empathize and still disagree knowing his position better precisely because he's familiar with the opposite opinion.

someone said: "love your neighbour as yourself" and added even "love your enemies." I think that Jordan Peterson made these statements a rule of life. That's why he's so successful and revered.

Dr Peterson draws inspiration from a lot of Biblical texts and many of Jesus's teachings, "repackaged" to specifically target the modern man.
Another example is in the second chapter of his book 12 rules for life where he constantly refers to the story of Adam and Eve.

Sean Henry Newman wtf? You clearly don't understand Marxism. Peterson is a wonderful speaker and sounds so smart and reasonable he appears to make sense, just think it over a bit, go a little deeper and you'll start to question his subtext. He's really very simple and not all that helpful for most people

    • @sabretooth9136

sylvieis agreed. Peterson also often sounds very bitter and angry at colleges - he doesn't come across well at all imo. He has a very rabid cult though who seem to believe he's God and can do or say no wrong.

Definitely start with the Joe Rogan episodes. If you enjoy those and are looking for something to get deeper into understanding yourself and the world, he has 2 lecture series to choose from (Maps of Meaning first, then watch Personalities). Afterwords move onto his Psychological Significance of the Bible series which is still in progress.
Clean your room and good luck sorting yourself out bucko.
