When you do a digital vocal analysis on Steve Perry and remove all the instruments, you will truly see how literally perfect his pitch, tone, range, and key are, throughout all of his songs in live performances. He’s amazing! Steve is probably the best male vocalist that has ever walked this planet. Remember, back then, it was raw, no computers to make you sound perfect.

It really sucks to sound this great and believe you aren’t that good, Steve had low self esteem for no reason, he is to date one of the very best singers because of how he’s able to control his pitch! I grew up in the 80’s listening to journey and it was one of the best decades for music

This song really exposed his operatic stature in the rock and he totally improvised his part to an amazing live version of the original song on stage. He did it so naturally like he is not even trying full volume or anything. Love your impression of course.

I was fortunate to sing these songs live 3 times back in the 80’s. Escape, Frontiers and Raised on Radio Tours.
I listened to arnel do thos song and honestly he does a great job but he doesn't have steven lower register... his register is higher and I can feel the difference. Perry the voice is a lifetime perfectly timed clear and 100 💯 natural talent. He never over sings and is pitch perfect. I heard he had the flu during this show... wtf????? 😱😱😱😱😱 how can he sound like this and be so ill??? Superman baby❤❤❤❤❤

I can relate. I just turned 65 and have been a Journey fan since the inception. So, so many awesome memories. Especially the ROR Tour. I went to many shows.

When I was in the Marine corps my best friend had a thing for Stevie Nicks, way way beyond a crush. So, some of the unit was sitting in the TV room in the barracks. On TV they announced that Stevie had married. Everyone got this "uh oh" look on their face. I said "I'm his best friend, I'll tell him."
So, later that night, when he got back I told him. He yelled "LIAR!!" and ran out into the night. He went on a bender for 3 days and I covered for him. When he got back I asked him if he was alright. He said "I can't believe she did that to me."
And we never spoke of the subject again.
Journey as popular as they are, is underrated, you had Steve Perry, one of the best voices, Neal Schon, a great guitarist, I mean he was 15 when he started playing with Santana and then Steve Smith is a great drummer.
I am thankful that the gift he was given at birth - he chose to use - and became highly successful at it.
And let's be real - a voice like this IS a gift.
Only vocalist that even comes near Steve perry would be Jimi Jamison of survivor. R.I.P Jimi you will never be forgotten.

Completely agree. Jimi Jamison is one of my favorites and is a phenomenal phenomenal vocalist. Steve Perry is just simply otherworldly. The 1980s had some of the most beautiful melodic rock vocalist ever. Mickey Thomas from starship is another one. We were so blessed to have these guys and listen to their precious gift
The emotion of this song that Steve puts into it really takes on a whole new meaning when you hear him describe how he got so burned out on singing and Turing that he never sang again after he quit until his traces album came out. I believe he was suffering from depression.

I’ve been a journey/Steve Perry fan since 1981 and I was actually a fan before that cause I didn’t know who they were when I was hearing Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin coming over the radio in late 79.

Way underrated. When I got Escape this was the song I played over and over and over. I still love it to this day. Definitely in my top 5. Love my Journey so much!!!

Steve is very humble. Listen to newer tracks from Steve Perry you will cry trust me look up "You belong to me" & "In the rain" his voice is raspy but it's bone chilling because you can feel his pain. I have been listening to journey since the mid 70s. I'm from Houston and yes i seen them live back in 1983

It's because of Journey that "power ballads" were a thing in the 80s. This song hits on all cylinders. There is so much going on here musically speaking. Steve Perry is an incredible vocalist.

I was tearing up right along with ya. He is like no other singer in the industry. Truly INCREDIBLE voice and there is no other like him. Miss him with the band, but him going out on his own is amazing as well. Steve Perry will always be JOURNEY. Noone can take his place. Deen Castronova is the only one in my opinion that sings just like Perry with those long notes. He mixes them very nicely like Steve did. Glad to see Deen back in the band.

Journey firing on all cylinders!!!!! Dean sounds so great when he sings this in concert, and I thought he out does Steve, but I was wrong. My God was Steve Perry's voice magical. I teared up, he is the master.
And to think Steve was sick while singing this. One of my favorite songs.
Hearing Steve with Journey I am transported back to the mid 80's. The music and good times associated with it seemed like it would last forever. Unfortunately, the U.S. recording industry literally closed the rock n roll in 1990. However, no country is rockin like Japan right now. If you haven't already, check out BabyMetal (Road of Resistance), Band Maid (Domination) and Waggaki band (Akatsugi).
He had such fantastic control of his voice, he could start with a soft quiet note and take it soaring above the instruments with perfect intonation and be dead on key every time. There will never be another like him.

I've made a comment before on here but you really have to listen to one of Steve Perry latest couple of tracks. There bone chilling pull up"You belong to me" & "In the rain" the tracks are mostly acoustic and it's chilling how you can feel his pain trust me it will definitely be one of the best songs you have ever heard!
I seen them many, many moons ago. Steve Perry's voice still sings out in my memory all these decades later. Truly was a magical evening.

You have to listen to one of his newer track called"You belong to me" stripped it's bone chilling. Steve had a girlfriend that passed away from cancer and you made him promise to sing again on her death bed. There's no instruments and you can hear the pain in Steve Perry voice

I got to see it. I grew up on this stuff. My dad and uncle vinal original records and that is how I listen to them. I like the old records for some reason. The pops and cracks of the needle on the vinal as the turn table spins is so relaxing. And another great reaction!

@@KristinKali Hey Kristin, not to rub it in, but the first time was during the Escape Tour. Roughly 20 rows back dead center from the stage. I just about s**t myself.
BTW, Loverboy opened for them. They were really good also.
Anyway, I was in 11th or 12th grade. I happen to spark up a conversation with a classmate I kinda knew about Journey coming to town. He tells me his dad works for the arena or promoter (something like that) and maybe he can get us in. The next day he says yes, he can get 4 tix @ $25 a piece. I didn't even ask him where the seats were. I just instinctively agreed.
As it turns out, the venue added seats and ours was one of those sections. It was so damn good. I will never forget it.

@@KristinKaliMany geniuses suffer from the imposter syndrome, which is the exact opposite of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Look those up.
It keeps them humble, but also prevents them from achieving their full potential. Many feel like outsiders looking in, suffer from depression, burnout, have nervous breakdowns, etc.
Steve's problems were compounded by a severe crippling disease brought on by over touring.
I heard him singing during an interview on the Sodajerkers website in England. Their object is to record intense interviews with songwriters.
The interview was conducted live during his media blitz for Traces. Before posting it on their website, they added clips from many of the songs discussed. They showed plainly how his voice had changed over the years.
His impromptu vocalizations sounded much better than his voice on Traces. Why he insisted on a much grittier sound for the album I can guess, but I would love to hear that sweet voice again.
Still hoping to see journey in 2023 would bee awesome and same time not the same

I was so blessed to have been in my teens when these guys became epic. I graduated in 1981 and their music was the center point of my years back then. I’m 57 now and I still listen to them. Their music never grows old to me. Great time to be alive in the 80s
Hey, Beth! I graduated in 1982, and the "Escape" album was the first album I ever bought. Steve Perry and Journey was so epic, and I was under their spell. I still rank them as my favorite - the version with Steve Perry, of course; and I listen to their music every day. And kudos to the group for reaching 1 billion streams on Spotify, for getting into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame; and for 40 years since the release of "Escape." Steve Perry is the G.O.A.T.!!!

The immediate look of delight on your face at the opening notes! The concerts they did in Japan were very good even by their stsndards. There are a lot of fine songs in their catalogue and Steve has his own superb catalogue. Can't go wrong.
