I saw Steve at Disneyland with his family years after he’d left Journey. He was literally in line with em waiting like everyone else. Him and I locked eyes for a moment and he saw that I recognized him. I watched his face sorta fall….I could tell he was bummed because he’s gonna get called out and his pleasant family day is gonna get ruined. I just smiled at him and indicated I wasn’t gonna bother him or call him out. He gave me I think the nicest smile I’ve ever seen on a celebrity’s face. He mouthed, “thank you.” And that was it.
Seemed like a great fella and I’m glad I didn’t screw up his day.

Don’t forget Johnathon Cain who wrote many great hits like “FAITHFULLY” or Neil who was a magician of the guitar. Steve was the backbone but he was a control freak. Look into how he had his own tour bus and stuff. Sounds like he had an ego death.

it's funny how people refuse to watch Journey today because he's not the lead singer. Having seen them twice with the current lead singer, I don't Steve, or anyone at his age would sound as good.

From what I've read and heard, Steve was in a relationship with Sherrie Stafford until the Raised on Radio album. Jonathan Cain himself said that Sherrie was very difficult to be around, all doom and gloom, was how he put it. She would get into arguments not only with Steve, but also with the other band members' wives and girlfriends. I believe to keep the peace, they traveled by themselves instead of with the rest of the band. Sherrie was very pretty, and apparently Steve loved her, but she seemed to have a jealous, fiery personality. As they say, love is blind.

Their manager, Herbie Herbert, seemed to want to keep the band on tour to keep the money rolling in. I also had the feeling he personally did not like Steve Perry and caused him to burn out with so many live concerts. Journey songs are absolutely BRUTAL on the vocal cords.

One of the greatest voices in rock music, period. I had the honor of seeing Journey during the "Infinity" tour and while we were driving to the show, we were discussing whether Steve could actually hit the notes on the album performing live. Boy howdy were we stunned! He literally had us sitting with our mouths hanging open. I saw them live four times and was never disappointed. Respect, love and deepest sympathies to you, Steve. @DUNGSTA I don't think Steve never had those problems. Drinking problems, yes, he had kind of struggled with that during his last tenure of the band height of success but he wasn't a full blown alcoholic. What really damage Steve mentally besides legal issue with his band was the separation from his girlfriend in the 80s, his mother's death, and his wife passing. That's the three things that affected Steve the most.

Well, if they need to walk away, then definitely. Some, like Tony Bennett, just wanted to, and did, sing right up to the end because he really seemed to like it. Plus, maybe we (the fans, the audience) should be honest with ourselves too.The funny thing is, is any of what happens off the stage, or after the director yells cut, really any of our business?
When we "celebrity" all of those famous people, and it removes some of their humanity, puts a wall up between them and the rest of the world, then, who is to blame? The artist, the singer, the actor, the writer, the entrepreneur, the director, the mogul, the model, those we turned into a celebrity or the rest of us regular folks? It is a conundrum and its hard to figure out why we've been doing it for ages.

The late Burt Bacharach was still co-writing great songs in his 90s. He co-wrote the great love song "Always" with Richard Marx, which is on Marx's "Songwriter" album. Ann Wilson, in recent years did a duet with Disturbed's lead singer David Draiman, on the song "Don't Tell Me". The music video has more than 7 million views on UA-cam. Billy Joel recently released a new song that he performed on the Grammy's that has more than 5 million views. Dennis DeYoung released a great album a few years ago called "26 East, vol. 1". I consider it a 5-star album. His singing voice still sounded quite good on it. Celine Dion sang the song "Ashes" (which was co-written by a Voice winner) for the Deadpool 2 movie back in 2018. The music video has more than 130 million views on UA-cam. She was around 50 when she recorded it and still had her big, powerful voice. Singers/groups in their 50s, 60s, and 70s can still put out great new music. Songwriting ability doesn't really go away unless a songwriter has a cognitive illness. A singer's voice might not last into their 70s. But some singers do still sound very good in their 70s: Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Dennis DeYoung, Gladys Knight, etc. Bob Seger is retired now. But he still sounded good on his last album released when he was in his early 70s. Seger also had a platinum album, "Face the Promise" when he was around 60/61 years old. The 91-year-old Willie Nelson puts out a new album every year. Sometimes two albums a year.

Then you are limiting your students' potential. You should encourage your students rather than hold them back with statements like, "You'll never be Steve Perry, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston," etc. You want vocal students to grow and reach their potential, not elude to being untalented through comparisons. If they can't sing a song that high, then lower the key of the song. Are you sure you're a vocal instructor, or was your statement just a creative way for you to complement Steve Perry...

Very uplifting to see someone with a 1-in-a-billion gift reach the heights of success and give the world a priceless legacy to enjoy, but have the strength of character & insight to walk away when that's the right thing to do. It's great that he had a relationship which achieved a level of love we all aspire to, but losing it after such a short time is a tragedy. I sincerely hope he finds love again & can enjoy it for all his remaining years!

A grounded life is so coveted ,especially by famous people often . Wen you lose your basic innocence of everyday life and what's important , we search our souls for peace and the answer to serenity. I'm glad Steve found that.

The best Journey song is Feeling That Way. Had both Steve Perry and Greg Rolie on vocals. A perfect example of what Journey was and what it was going to be in one song.

So much of this interview with Steve speaks to my heart about isolation, being ill, being in the spotlight, overcoming the loss of an adored loved one;, finding a way to be grounded, about helping others and ourself! Great. Great interview… Steve, hope you will continue to inspire people by writing music or by helping others to find their voice!

I love me some Steve Perry! An amazing voice of our generation! So passionate and beautiful.
It’s amazing that he fought substance use.
He had such a perfect instrument, yet got tired and stressed out by music.
    I loved hearing his story.💛
