The RESCUE AND REFIT Story of an 80ft former Whitbread Race Yacht (Ep. 1)

  • A short 12 minute 'glimpse' of the 3 1/2 years we spent restoring the former Whitbread Maxi 'Creighton's Naturally' also known as 'FCF Challenger' and 'Ocean Greyhound'.
    Now known as 'Camara', she was built for the 1981/1982 Whitbread Round the World race and was the first of 10 Ocean 80's built by Southern Ocean Shipyard in the UK. She is a David Alan-Williams & Doug Peterson co-design.
    When we bought the boat, she was in very sad shape and neglected condition. We knew the only way to do the job properly was to start right back in the beginning which saw us strip the boat to bare hull and start again.
    With no sponsors, a limited budget and only the two of us working on the boat, it became the biggest project of our lives!
    There are things we would have liked to do different if we had had no time or budget constraints and there certainly are still many 'projects' we have planned on 'Camara', but we are proud of what we have achieved and hope it gives others the motivation to take on a 'project boat' and breath some new life into a deserving yacht in need of TLC.
    Please note that Peter is a qualified boat builder and rigger which obviously played a huge part in the outcome of the rebuild.
    Please also note that there were many different stages, projects etc that are not all shown in the video but I tried my best to show the many stages along the course of the project to give you an idea.

      Thank you! We know, it seems crazy but the prop pushes her just fine. Though our 185hp is quite thirsty so we only motor if we have to, we try and sail as much as we can! Luckily she doesn’t need much wind to slip through the water. Thanks for watching!

      Coincidentally I also happened to actually be looking directly at Creightons when she got T-boned by a ultralight at Antigua SW in 1995, hurt the ultralight a lot more than her!

      I am with you there. I think that most boat builders should take note of what these amazing folks managed to accomplish WITHOUT THE NEED FOR AN ELABORATE RARE WOOD INTERIOR .... I love the final product. My dream as well but I lost my partner which put an end to our dream to Cruze the great expanse of our oceans and seas. I have an add to find someone with the same dream, potentially gutting a storm damaged boat together, chartering people, (backpackers) from South America to one of the Caribbean islands. A blast, hardly a job but its lucrative a friend did it to survive but it ended up making him over 1000 in a 5 day week...that's what lit the fire under my ass.... also finally settling by purchasing a sailors,, motor yacht marina with rooms for backpackers and travellers a like. Guatemala, panama, never Belize it's a bloody coke highway pit stop, so many deaths it's hard not to think of the insane residents such as McAfee.....whom had gone (CLEARLY) off the deep end that fellow. The riches he has collected and still reaps the rewards (financial of course.) from the sales of his out dated security software. He has squandered his fortune away and in a ten year period he had lost his mind, his money and most recently his ownership of his beachfront 6000 sq foot monstrosity. Today, his mansion stands looking like a ruin, the locals have cleaned the place out. A vacationer watched as if they were worker ants. I'm sure most of you have seen a shot of thousands of ants carrying items heavier than themselves...well now replace the ants with the locals that's what it looked like from afar ..busy busy ants ( locals) leaving with the last item, a framed picture of McAffie nude with a kg in his lap...idiot.

    Great job. Well done. I'm very happy to see this boat so beautifully restored and given a new lease of life. I hope you and your family put many happy miles under her keel.
    I was briefly involved in a chapter of her history, when Les Williams got FCF Challenger to the finish of the 81-82 WRTWR with a broken mast. A few of us Ship Science students at Southampton Uni helped Les and his sidekick, the hilarious Jacques Redon, (Claire Francis' ex-husband) to prepare Challenger for the two handed Round Britain race, which he did with Bob Fisher. Preparations were complicated by Moody's marina dropping and damaging the new mast (which was a masthead rig, smaller than the original fractional stick), which made it very tight getting the boat to Plymouth in time for the start. Les was a nice guy, and one of the first to get big bucks sponsorship into yacht racing (with Burton Cutter). Ocean greyhound was a very ambitious project, but there was a perennial shortage of funds.

    Awesome task, beautiful result. And, it only took 12 minutes! Actually, I can't imagine the labor hours and expenses that went into this labor of love. Maybe you will share that info?

    • @Camarasailing
      @Camarasailing  3 роки тому +11

      DocuMetrics, Inc. it took a little longer than 12 minutes 😉 It took us 3 1/2yrs, of course there are still the odd projects we do now but then you are never ‘done’ on a boat! We were lucky that the boatyard my husband had worked at offered us a space at the back of the yard for free which was a huge savings and factor in whether we could do it. Due to him working in the industry we got most our materials at very reduced or cost price so it’s hard to put a dollar figure to that that’s realistic for anyone else but be assured we spent all the proceeds from our house sale on this project!

    I remember Creightons very well.
    She crashed into us just off Cowes breaking off our bowsprit and putting a two foot hole in her own port side a midships.
    She managed to sail off and compete finishing 3rd while we had to abandon the week.
    Sad they renamed her !!!

      @Camarasailing  3 роки тому +2

      skippy One wow that’s one memory and story of her! She’s been renamed a few times actually. She started off as Ocean Greyhound, then FCF Challenger, to Creighton’s Naturally and we named her after both our kids 😉

    What a great story. Another grand boat SAVED! Bless you and your husband for taking it on. The design, integration, and execution was top notch. She's enjoying a well deserved pinnacle retirement thanks to you guys. BRAVO! -and enjoy. You worked hard and it shows. (My favorite part was after gutting the innards. A blank canvas!)

      This is a live aboard cruiser now, albeit a fast live aboard cruiser. When I see people on who are full time cruiser's who don't even like to put up a Bimini, I question why. We all know the dangers of the sun and skin cancer and then you add in the reflection of the water too. I realize that for racer's they want the extra speed, but as much as I love sailing and all of that, not getting skin cancer is a bigger desire to me!
