This video shows 8 months of work in 25 minutes on the legendary racing boat known as Duracell. Duracell was built by legendary American sailor, Mike Plant, who beat the American record for solo circumnavigation in the first Vendee Globe in 1989. I am lucky to own this piece of American racing history.

I was skeptical or concerned at first by the scope of modifications you were planning. But you are making it happen. I am very impressed with the pace you are maintaining. And while I am not an expert it does seem like you are doing a pretty good job on everything. Anyway, my hat is off to you.
Cool to see someone doing professional level composite work on UA-cam. I have watched so many of the "big" channels and cringed at the quality of their fiberglass work and their use of PPE. So cheers to vacuum bags and full face masks.
Thinking you might enjoy Mike Pateys Draco and Scrappy builds. He goes into great detail into how to get a perfect finish using carbon fiber as he builds his airplanes. I'm here because (I believe) of MJ sailing and their 42' cat build. They are also doing a good job and using PPE.
Clearly you dont know how bad it is then.. changing the structure that was designed specifically to have those bulkheads in those specific location. Is dangerous you can really screw things up doing that because you end up weakening the structure
Check Life On The Hulls, Ross does very professional work building a catamaran from scratch.. but yea know what you mean some channels just throw crap and see if it sticks..
@@DerekGraham777 nah. It'll be just fine. You sound like one of those people that think you need to put the stock tires on their car or "iT cOuLd bE dAnGeRoUs." Or you need to put the same brand oil in your car everytime you have an oil change or "iT cOuLd rUiN tHe EnGiNe."
@@DerekGraham777 If that boat was built right in the first place (which I'm sure it was given the original owners) then it's overengineered as f***! Moving a support from one spot a few feet over will have little effect on the structural integrity of the boat. Obviously we can only look at video, but that thing looks over built and solid.
Thanks to magic carpet I have found your channel. Now binge watching. I am going to really enjoy your journey. Good luck with this project.
Welcome aboard, Andy!
me too
Yo también! 👍
same!
had a dream I had a 200 ft 2 masted ship along those lines.
I followed Mike, back in the day, He was an awesome and admired sailor. Glad to see that Duracell is going to have a life again. I sail a 35' Cheoy Lee on Lake Superior. There is nothing like being out on the water with nothing but the wind noise and the boat boning her teeth, under full sail.
UA-cam algorithm be hitting right at midnight
Wow exactly midnight for me when this hit too. Crazy
When you guys should not have any screen in front of your eyes for an hour already.
Depressjon is not worth it, put that phone away at 11pm at the latest.
@@grisza77 Dont hate us cause you aint us.....
That is so correct
11:15 for me
As someone who grew up in New Zealand and has been around sailing yachts and fiber glass for many years, I will be watching with interest. Restoring that yacht is a great project. Looking forward to seeing her floating again. Greetings from Thailand.
Thanks to Magic Carpet for introducing your story! I look forward to following your journey. I'm a sailor of 50+ years but seem to enjoy boat project stories more than the actual sailing. Great introductory video to get an idea of your massive endeavour and your impressive skills!
Thanks Jim!
When I was building my F-9A tri in the early 90's, I used alot of cardboard and tape to do mock-ups of different panels/parts to make sure I liked the shapes. Then used those cardboard pieces as templates to cut the DuraCore, Carbon Fiber or aluminum. Some parts took many iterations before I got to what I thought was the right shape. It's easy to scribe on cardboard and it's cheap or free.
It's so cool to see someone doing something useful with their life.
I'm astounded at your abilities and I scratched and was itching as soon as the fiberglass cutting started 😅 I'm so chuffed to have come across your channel.
Thanks
I remember when my girl would say that it is beautiful while i was working on something. I felt like you looked when she said it to you.. RiP baby. Miss you each day and each time I look at the ocean.
Love this fantastic rebirth/renewal of this iconic bit of maritime history!
Thanks 🙏
Excellent job, Love watching the progress! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for documenting this. As if doing the work wasn’t enough effort! This is a great project and it’s great to see it taking shape!
What a cool project. You're repurposing an old racing sailboat that nobody wanted into a cool liveaboard yacht. Thanks.
This is so inspiring!!! Thank you for taking the time to document your work. I've learned so much already. Easy watching and lots to learn. No frills. Thank you Magic Carpet.
Thank you Jooste :)
When you said that all your friends were there to help I half expected the camera to pan around to no one in sight.
Very nice, simultaneously giving me hope and dread about my own project.
Thank you for the professionalism in your use of PPE. Great work on this project
Wow, what an ambitious and exciting project. Really enjoyed your video. Can't wait for more, and thanks for taking us along on the journey! The Steiner arch structure in wood grabbed my attention - very elegant and functional - very nice.
I am always amazed at what you had to learn for this project
I love seeing that level of talent. Well done
I love the way the dog house matches the rest of the boat! Thanks for inspiring me to finish my duck boat
I'm so happy for that beautiful boat, and so grateful to you for doing this. Thank you for saving that gorgeous beast! Excellent work too. It's amazing how many talented people are out there fixing sailboats.
Well for one your a hell of a shipwright !! What an amazing boat to start with .it’s going to be great watching you transform it into an incredible sailing yacht!! I love the lines of the widows and the roof.I’m in!!
No kidding, easy too take apart, gotta have skills too put it back together.
Concerned with the removal of the ballast tanks tho. That's a fairly tender hull. He is also adding weight with the pilot house, raising the centre of gravity.
Always wondered what happened to these race boats, would of been nice too see her restored keeping her as fast as possible.
It's been a joy to watch you and your team work. So very cool. I'm 62 and for the first time I'm about to service/pull apart a 50+ year old turntable. Always admired people who have that practical hands-on nature. Never too late. I'll take my time, watch several more videos and make sure I'm organized ie like video taping what I'm doing and each part removed is placed so as to keep track of the order parts were removed then returned to their proper place. Thanks.
I just binge watched all yesterday afternoon and got caught up. What a great episode with Maya and Aladino!
Now I am really looking forward to you next episode. Hoping you can find the right mast!
I love the shape and design of your workshed, its a thing of beauty
Outstanding overview, just magic happening in front of my eyes..Keep up the good work, not many are doing such a drastic overhaul and renewal on a boat.
I also admire your engineering, shipwright’s skills and last but not least your perseverance…
Thank you so much, Frans. We always appreciate your encouragement.
Magic Carpet sent me over, what a wonderful project!
Also here from Magic Carpet. You must pinch yourselves at times over your good fortune to be gifted this amazing boat. Can’t wait to see it sailing! What history you have there. 😀
We pinch ourselves daily :)
What a wonderful thing to do with a boat that had been stuck in limbo for over 20 years. Fabulous.
You are very thorough in your design, it’s so nice to see such a good methodology during the build/re-model.
I'm so glad I found this channel. What an incredible project.
That's a glorious yacht hull, such beautiful lines.
I am stoked to watch this project. Wishing you guys the best.
If I had done this I would have started WW3 by now, I just don't have the temperament. This was a pleasure to watch. Looking forward to the next installment.
I'm so very impressed ~ I've taught myself the skill of composite construction and these are really next level. Very nice and so aggressive with the redesign. I built a trimaran once... having everything down to the exact amount of material is expensive. Having all the tools and skils takes a while to acquire. I'm 70 + and I LOVE these kinds of projects. Good on YOU !
Thanks Markus!
You fellas did an, “Absolutely-Outstanding-Job!! BRAVO! 🙌 BRAVO!! 👏 BRAVO !!!🙌
Impressed with your workmanship and planning.
So much labor intensive work!, Great job, real nice layups!
Huge project. The Owner gave the Boat to the right person. Congratulations.
I've been watching your build for a while now, and I'm blown away.
Incredible job, gorgeous boat. I can't wait to see her sail.
Thanks!
What a wonderful project! I send you all the best wishes and the energy of a million Duracell-Minions.
Thanks😊
What a fantastic but of history to have and make your own. I remember watching this make it's way around the world and now I get to see it again 👍
I have been watching your videos from the very beginning, I have to say this episode is by far the best ! Very well done.
Please keep the videos coming.
Yep MC has sent to a crazy build of a boat this is massive wow is an understatement looking forward to see this vessel come to light
You are Privileged to have the opportunity to enjoy your project, all the effort will be worth it. Enjoy your progress.
Oh my god Duracell lives on! A piece of sailing history!
Excited to join the adventure! First video in...( impressed by your skill, determination and the fact you care about your lungs...) Totally on board for more....:)
Awesome, welcome aboard :)
What an awesome project! And being done with some serious skill.
Awesome work mate
Can’t wait to see more
Architect and engineer here, specialized in prefab construction. Thanks for this great video. If this is how yachts are made in general, no wonder why they are +500K. These methods are hilariously inefficient. There must be a better way.
So many people would not understand what drives a person to invest in this restoration work. Kudos for keeping this vessel out of the landfill. Qualifies for our #onemillionboater pledge!!!
What a project ! Greetings from Germany. We sail a "racer" too, a Sun Legende 41, built in 1986. We are going to cross the Atlantic in this year.
Thanks! Fair winds on our upcoming crossing!
Actually, I’ve been following you since the first episode, this is epic, throughly enjoying every second! You’re so talented and knowledgeable about what you’re doing here with your next boat, Louise was awesome and this one? Yes, it will be one of a kind!
Thanks Nena!
What an awesome video! I am excited to see your progress taking shape.
So glad Magic Carpet linked your project!. Awesome so far on the build. Total respect for an expert shipwright from a 'hobbyist' (71)that built his own Longboard from scratch (bucket list 3 years ago) only to watch the resin coat going off before the cloth was fully wrapped. At least the board was finished, despite the rough colour flaws. Probably I should have used epoxy. Lived and worked in Bermuda for several years but unfortunately didn't know anyone in the sailing community. Fascinating history of the yacht.
Congrats on the longboard, sounds like it has a lot of character. Glad to have you aboard.
A fabulous project.... Its great to see your production techniques... Thumbs up !!
That is an impressive video thank you. Good luck with the rest of the project and looking forward to seeing more and the boat evolves
Great video. Enjoyed seeing her come together.
What a beauty !!! I love the gantry too👍💪💪
The boat build is part of your journey through life, you have the energy and motivation to achieve to great things, what ever the destination is of this journey you will come out the other end a stronger and better person. I think you are doing a great job and wish you all the best.
Great recap. Awesome project.
Great job, learning all the details can be trying but worth it❣️
Love seeing makers from Washington.
You are insane!!! Love it!
This is a big project and I look forward to seeing your progress
your a man of many years beyond your realtime age, me thinks theres going to be a bidding war to buy this boat when its just about finished ,although you wont be selling it anytime in the next decade 😁
You saved this boat from the scrapyard. Good to see that she will not end up like, RIP, Project Amazon.
Wow, amazing work!
Very impressive work. I shall definitely be following.
What a super interesting project , what a big difference it makes when you have all the required skills needed to complete the boat , I’m looking forward to the next instalment, thanks
Excellent workmanship !! Professional approach and application . Best of all , when complete not only will you have a very precious and fast boat you can savior the journey you had getting there. 👌
What a beauty!! Good luck!! Love the arch of your shed as well.
If that was your mom, what an awesome lady.
Awesome!
Thanks again for the video.😁
Amazing job well done guys, thanks for sharing im excited with you guys :) good luck!
Congratulations Matt. She is a beautiful boat. All the best to you guys from Durban, South Africa.
I am so humbled by this video. I am really amazed at your skill and dedication. You’ve got me questioning my entire life at this point I’m now trying to figure out what is it that I’m supposed to be doing. While you’re over here building masterpieces. Greetings from Florida.

Dude are you serious someone actually gave that thing away? That is absolutely incredible! Awesome!
It was an incredible gift john gave us
Wow looks great. Nice work
Omg, I just found your channel. It's the best. Thanks for the content! I'm dreaming on buying a yacht.
Thanks, Priya!
Guess it's not just me that got this in my recommendations. 1.4m views. I'm guessing that'll soar even more. What an undertaking. Subscribed.
Welcome aboard!
Loving the journey
Incredible journey. You must love the smell of epoxy by now. truly admirable the progress and dedication in this project. Great Work!
Mike as an old friend of mine 👍so happy to see the boat being reborn 😁
Wow...really cool.
Great video! Saw you on Sailing Magic Carpet too! Very awesome keep rolling and get Duracell on the blue making adventures again! 👍👍👌👌👏👏💪💪
Thank you thoughtful wander :)
@@TheDuracellProject 👍👍
Great Video, Great job done on the rebuild.
I also found you through Magic Carpet. I watched the movie Coyote and several of your earlier videos. Your subscribers are going to go through the roof. I appreciate the sheer scale of what you are doing having restored a trailer sailer which was enough work in itself. I’m on the verge of taking on my next project and learning a lot from your techniques. Keep ‘‘em coming!
We're glad that you're learning something for your own project. Good luck with your project!
Wow!! Super jealous.. What an amazing, exciting project. Mike Plant is definitely smiling down on you!! Almost "Coyote II"!! Cheers
Love watching your subs grow!!!
Very happy to see this. I was on the boat when she was at the south end of Lake Union in about 94. The previous owner was getting ready for a nonstop circumnavigation. As I recall, he had a collision with a ship and was dismasted somewhere of the coast of Mexico. He then motored up to San Diego over something like 1000 miles. Probably with the 3 cylinder Yanmar you pulled out. Again, as I recall she had a 27hp Yanmar to move around harbors etc. I've always wondered what happened to her.
Cool, you must have met John, the previous owner, during a Duck Dodge! We tell a bit of the story of the collision in epsiode 3.
Congrats !
I subbed beginning of 2023 and wow so cool to see this vid. Thank you so much. I grew up on lake Washington doing everything water related to water human, sail, power. I wish everyone could have. From swimming to watching hydroplanes. This was 1970s you will know where if you have heard of B.A.R.F. No not puking. My brother lives on you island I visit your town and live in Kent. Again thank you so much I am hooked
cool, thanks neighbor! We used to live on the shipping canal on our sailboat and sometimes we'd sail or paddle board to lake washington. Such a beautiful area we live in!
I believe you had to spend a lot of time stepping back and admiring your work.
