Found a fledgling last night(I didn’t know it was one at the time)a cat had it and I shooed the cat away and other cats were praying on it, he didn’t want to fly and he was breathing heavily and would flutter away if i got close, I kept it in a box overnight and took it to a nature center in the morning, they told me it was a fledgling and to put it back where I found it, so I put it down where I first found it and after about a minute it flew to the hood at my car looked at me one last time and flew away.

😮 they always tell us to put them back. That makes me mad. It doesn't take a university course to learn what food is needed for what bird, or any other care. If a flegling can't fly to a safe place then releasing it is a death sentence. A few feedings, for a few days strengthens them for better survival so they can fly to a safer place. Afterall, our Creator gave mankind the responsibility to car for earth and all living creatures on it.

I found one he was about 3 days old I’ve been taking care of him keeping hot bottle of water with heating pads to keep him warm. I have to grind food to help him eat since mom can’t throw it up. Yes I could probably take it to a place but I don’t think they take starlings. Also the baby is doing very well. Once he’s prepared to learn to fly I’ll bring him near his nest for a hour or so a day so he can watch other birds.

Just helped a ton. Had a bird nest in our gutter for Spring and decided to leave it alone until the birdies left the nest.
Came out to the backyard this morning to see a fledgling around near the fence. Thought it was an injured bird until I put to and two together. Then I actually seen the 3rd fledging flap to the ground and the parents fluttering around them from time to time. Very beautiful to see.

I found a nestling on the ground yesterday after very windy weather. I contacted two rescue organisations and the local vet in the process of working out what to do. This is exactly what I was advised to do and very concisely explained. I have put the bird back in a nearby nest. Just hoping it was the right one. I am happy 😊 to think that my having handled the bird would not caused problems with the parents.

The neighbors cat brought a live bluejay fledgling to my doorstep. I have NO clue where it came from and the closest wildlife rescue is over an hour and a half away. So, its up to me to try to save this little fella.

Hello! I live in a suburb of San Antonio.
I've had both robins (as pictured in this video) and mostly barn swallows on my property.
There are 2 other stages of baby birds: Hatchling and juveniles.
Hatchlings are 0-3 days old. The are almost completely bald, and their eyes are closed.
If you found a hatchling, I doubt very seriously that it is still alive, due to the shock from falling out of the nest, and most likely from coming in contact with extreme temperatures (out of the nest and no feathers = most likely too cold; or if it fell on a patio, porch, or sidewalk--too hot or too wet).
Nestlings are 3-12 days old, their eyes are open, they can make sound, and have pin feathers.
Fledglings are approx. 2 weeks old and have down feathers.
Contrary to what you said in your video, all birds can move around PLENTY.
Trust me--they can walk, or at least crawl, etc. just fine in search of warmth & seclusion.
Juveniles are older than fledglings (e.g., 3 weeks or more).
While juveniles have already fledged, they still return to the nest to roost until migration.
Juveniles can feed themselves, but still sometimes accept food from their parents.
Juveniles are full-size, but lack the colors and hues of the feathers that adult birds have.

    • @birdnerd5631
      @birdnerd5631  3 роки тому +1

Yes, thank you! I agree with what you said here, I did not mention hatchlings since this was a what to do if you find a baby bird video, not a stages of young birds growth video, and as you mentioned you are not likely to find one alive. Same with juveniles, they are not normally mistaken for baby birds.
I don't agree with what you said about them moving around though. If you were to find a nestling on the ground, it would pretty much just be flopping around or not moving at all. I never said they were incapable of moving around as they can make small movements, especially towards the end of the nestling period as they begin to become stronger. I specifically said in the video that fledglings are " able to hop or flutter around. They are also able to hold onto a branch by themselves." The being able to hold onto a branch and fluttering around, testing their wings is the main factor to help people not immersed in the bird world identify the stage.
Also, the juveniles do not usually return to their nests to roost. A nest is more like a nursery for birds, used for incubating eggs and raising young, after the birds have fledged they do not return.
Thank you for your comment! :)

our backyard watching for sometime. Try to ensure it up in case one felll out. Today one of the four is just sitting on the branch and I know it was just a matter of time and now it’s in the backyard which is why I needed to watch your video to make sure I was doing the right thing. Thanks again.

I found a baby fledgling today while on a walk with my dog.
At first I left it alone, but then returned, worried.
I saw an unknown cat slowly coming towards it, some 10 meters away.
Luckily I did not do like the video says, and moved into one of the neighbourhood bushes, where I saw other birds hiding.
While it might struggle, it is better than being eaten by a cat

No choice but to keep nearly full feathered baby pushed 2 times from nest. Perhaps the runt since he was weak, but after third feeding much stronger with healthy poop. I play Swallow bird songs before feeding mealworms and soaked high protein cat food after squishing water off. Thanks for tips on raising. Hope he survives since all wildlife is in danger these days.

I brought it inside and have been caring for it, and it seems to be doing OK so far. I'm praying he will survive so I can release him once he can fly. I named it Jack.

I found a fledgling just now outside my door. He freaked out when i first tried to grab him and he hid underneath a piece of outside furniture. after some inspecting, its clear his foot/leg is broken or lame. one foot is perfect, while the other one is curled up and immobile. His parents are nearby, watching. I put him in a box with some water and a crushed beetle. I will try my absolute best to leave him alone now bc when i leave my apartment, the parents fly away.
unfortunately, they built their nest above concrete, so i bet its common for the fledglings to break a foot crash landing.

@@GhoxtiezI just had a baby bird emergency.. I found one that was tangled in vines and hanging upside down by one leg for who knows how long.
It was 90 degrees and fully in the sun.. not looking well.
By the time I freed the baby and put it in a box.. I soaked a clean towel with water and let him suck on it and he was so happy.
I too was happy I went this route when I learned that baby birds can choke on water if you drop it in their mouth. I think I made the right choice but I got lucky to have thought to do that..

The one I found was a sparrow. It was on the side of the road with cars, dogs and their owners etc walking by in direct sunlight so I figured I couldn’t just leave it. So I put it in a nearby bush. It was a fledgling I think and it was moving with eyes open. So I was shocked to see it had passed while I was having breakfast nearby. If it is a nestling that needs help, contact a local wildlife rehab. They will give you exact details, but you could use some other type of container or bin.

@@mastershifupr16 If the baby bird is mobile enough to follow the mother, most likely it is a fledgling and is supposed to be out of the nest and is just learning how to fly.

Not sure about this advice. There are plenty of people who have successfully rehabilitated their own nestlings and fledglings. I guess you have to be willing to commit to taking care of them. They say don’t handle too much or get too close because you can imprint the bird and will be difficult to release back into the wild.
