  • Today we review the VVT Engine Swap that we did in Dylan's Miata build. What started as a winter project easily carried on into the summer months, but we've finally gotten it to a point where we can call this phase of his Miata complete. Is there another Engine Swap in his future? Or will we "force" him down another darker path?

    Hey guys, good work with that vvt-build!.. if you can, it is worth going e85. My non-vvt 1.8, 1998NB-engine did 167whp@8000~rpm on e85 and the same skunk2-setup as you show here (w racingbeat headers and a freeflowing stainless exhaust of course).. the e85 just allows that little extra ign.timing .. safely

    • @NappMotorsports
      @NappMotorsports  4 роки тому +2

      The car is set for E85. On the initial setup the E85 added 5 whp and 5 ft-lbs, so we’re just assuming it’s around the same benefit here. We just didn’t have time to dyno it on ethanol again.

    If I had to switch my 1.8 on my na I would've gone 1.9 build forged bp with fully balanced rotating assembly, billet oil pump, and ATI fluid damper. Coolant reroute with a cross flow rad then worry about the turbo. Just my thoughts.

    • @NappMotorsports
      @NappMotorsports  4 роки тому +3

      The cost to go 1.9 isn’t worth it when a turbo will kick you right to 250 wheel, and then you’re still limited by your transmission at that point. Balanced rotating assembly is a good idea anyways. Dylan has the coolant reroute and we have a big radiator for it already, just need to install it.

    Great work you guys did. Can you estimate the cost of all the components under the hood? And are 1000cc injectors really necessary for a 180hp build? Keep up the good work!

    • @NappMotorsports
      @NappMotorsports  10 місяців тому +1

      1000CC’s definitely are overkill, but he had them from his turbo setup. Anything 400cc or above would be more than enough.
      I don’t have an accurate estimate for parts under the hood. Engine parts and machining alone would likely be north of $10k, not including build labor or anything auxiliary.

    How about swapping to 85mm bore pistons with 11:1 CR. Then go with +1mm valves, that should get you to 145-150 ft-lbs of wheel torque and 170 whp. Turbos need not apply.

  • @mitchmoore6174
    @mitchmoore6174 2 роки тому

    Umm, Skunk POS intake lost torque from the start of the test to the end and picked up top end horesepower above 6,000 RPM. In a drag race, autocross, or road race the Skunk intake is going to be slower than the stock POS VVT intake. On an NA VVT engine, the only reason to use a Skunk would be for a long course run at sustained high RPM where you run the engine at 6,000Rpm plus for 3-5 miles. Anywhere else, the Skunk is a power killer on a stock or mild VVT NA engine. A used EMD/JMD square top manifold will make better overall power than the stock intake or the Skunk.

      A 1.8 swap is a big upgrade over a 1.6, especially when you factor in VVT. I always recommend a 1.8 swap before any engine mods to a 1.6, it’s just not worth modifying the 1.6’s in my opinion.

    • @NappMotorsports

      It’s possible, the only difference is that you would have to be sure the intake cam has clearance at full cam advance with the higher compression pistons on the VVT bottom end. I don’t know for sure how much you can take before that interferes.
