It's very rare you actually see it in real time. But according to some people who's read this particular book they would say that the character of Laci is a case of "not being believable" in this particular instance. It would be one thing if we saw her progress this way, but it came out of nowhere. That's why he doing this seems so "out of character" for her, and why everybody is having a hard time trusting her.

You see, this is all I ever really wanted. You don't necessarily have to pull a 180, but just be willing to have an honest, open conversation, and be willing to change your mind to varying degrees when new evidence is presented.

That is only if they talk in the form of a debate, even if I had months to prepare for a debate against him on a subject I disagree with him on, and it was sprung on him a day in advance he could debate circles around me. But if they had a public conversation that wasn't a debate I think it would be reasonably fruitful.

I'm a huge fan of Jordan B Peterson and I love how he talks to people and lets be fair he's willing to listen to you no matter how absurd you may sound to him so at least watching will teach us how to listen and debate via facts. Laci, as a longtime subscriber I have to agree with a lot of your points. I used to be VERY strong in my beliefs and wouldn't hear others opinions. However, this past two years I've really opened my mind. I'm a lot more moderate than I thought! I'm subscribed to both left and right leaning channels now, and I hold beliefs from both sides. I'm glad you seem to be going down a similar path, and are willing to hold a civil conversation with those who hold opposing beliefs. It's a very healthy thing to do, much healthier than getting instantly angry and shutting those views out.
Korrina Young This is the real human bond we have with each other. When ideas are censored, we are stagnant in progress and conflict is ongoing throughout history. Most of the major things that are popular in this technological era has been unknown or less popular ideas being adapted. Which would not come to pass without uncensored speech and being able to practice those ideals in a free society.

I'll point out, for instance, I cannot see the comments in this thread of anyone except Missy J's OP. This is because I am blocked by all the other commenters in this thread, most or all of whom I have probably never spoken to.
This is a striking difference between the attitudes of the two camps. I have one single person blocked on all of UA-cam. In general, Antis don't block people. We want to see all ideas. But, Feminists and SJWs block willy-nilly, even people they don't know. (Steve Shives being sort of the super-example of this)
Listening to the "other side" is an act of bravery for Feminists/SJWs. it's simply not equivalent for the Anti side.

Now, I personally think that this video is like the definition of great because it, in a nutshell, explains how everyone, no matter where they are on whatever spectrum, should act towards members of the other party, which is kind, willing to talk peacefully, and, of course, considering and even willing to accept the posibility that you may agree or even change your mind on something based on the argument

The internet has gotten so bad with the silencing I was starting to feel like I was the only one who felt this way or thought this was that wasn’t an extreme conservative or extreme liberal. I admit to unfollowing you a few years ago because of your followers at the time essentially telling me that I was not allowed to question or discuss certain views about the LGBT+ community. I honestly got depressed and felt defeated and left social media because it honestly just felt like it was impossible and I must be an outlier or something. It's been 5 years, I don't think anyone will ever see this anyways, and I'm rewatching some old liked videos.
Are all ideas worth discussing? At the risk of oversimplifying, No. No matter what you believe, I guarantee you that there is some solid line you will draw that you are not even slightly considering discussing. Is that a moral failing? An intellectual one?
Here's an easy pitch: no, it's not worth discussing whether or not the earth is flat. Why? Because there's nothing to discuss. It's not a matter of hegemony, it's that one "side" uses evidence, and the other just straight-up refuses to. You cannot win a "debate" with a flat earther. They, as a rule, do not believe anything you can give as evidence. You can personally take them up to see the curvature of the earth, and they will have decided halfway up that you've put them in a simulation. They can, of their own devising, test that at a certain distance, a beam of light will not reach the same spot based on the curvature, and they will come up with another reason why. If you give them an opportunity to speak beyond their echo chamber, all you are doing is allowing them to put *dis*information into an otherwise innoculated audience. Those who do not know any better (everyone is vulnerable to propaganda, anyone can join a cult) will take the disinformation as equivalent to the information, they will believe that there is some merit to argument.
It takes magnitudes more effort to correct disinformation than it is to make it. That is a losing battle, it's not worth dying on that hill.
People are very very very good at compartmentalizing. The old "2+2=3, but in engineering, it was still 4" will always ring true, and it never toppled a dictatorship. People have idols that would explicitly hate each other; pointing out fallacies doesn't change anyone's mind. In a perfect world, we'd all know about how to think critically and evaluate evidence, and we'd have a lovely little marketplace of ideas. The problem is we don't have perfect education, and we do have snake oil salesmen and merchants who don't play by the rules. We have people who argue in bad faith, people who do not care about facts, those who promote "alternative facts," and people who base their understanding of fact and opinion on arbitrary nonsense that cannot be logically refuted because it fundamentally isn't logical.
There is no invisible hand that ensures that fact wins the war. Nor is there any metric to stabilize the "correct" opinion. When people have the tools to measure, they'll get to the right answer, but not if they don't have the tools.
I'm always behind stopping the people who want to break those tools. The belief that all censorship is bad is shortsighted at best and an excuse to be cruel at worst.

Hi Laci, Thank you, most sincerely, for your fresh, open-minded and yet critical/logical approach to the topics in your channel - especially this one. My father taught all of us children (and my younger sister actually quoted this at his funeral) - A strong man is never afraid of a strong woman.
People saying it's "Not worth your time" to talk to the other side are fools. Being open to and listening to opposing/differing opinions is the most important thing about this whole ideological argument whirlwind our internet is these days. Ghandhi sent Hitler a friendly letter because he wanted to talk. He didn't validate Hitler's choices, he didn't say the holocaust was okay, he just reached out with an open mind to engage in communication, to understand.
Interesting example. Did Ghandhi's discussions with Hitler change any of Hitlers actions? Did discussions help Ghandhi understand Hitler better - such as how to better oppose/defend against Hitlers actions? Maybe so. But I imagine that Ghandhi knew what Hitler was about before meeting with him. In short, what was the point. I agree that the "not worth your time" is not a conclusion we should reach easily BUT there are times when it certainly seems appropriate.

I think Laci has taken a fantastic stance here. The problem IS a lack of communication, that is one reason why things escalate so fast. Congratulations on taking this stance. Those attacking your new stance are often afraid to debate and to have their own ideas challenged. This is an opportunity to learn, to discuss, and to create a more reasoned view of the world as a result of that discussion. The *reason* there is a lack of communication is because feminists have simply refused to debate, stuck their fingers in their ears, and actively tried to ban anyone who disagrees with them.
I would argue it's bad from both sides, radical anti-feminists are just as bad. It's going to take people from both sides to chill out and take a step back for this conversation to get less vitriolic.

I think Crazy is talking about the madness and close mindedness characteristic of the loudest and most aggresive SJWs. I disagree as well but it is an error just too easy to make considering for example that I've never seen a singleSJW apart from Laci that didn't explicitly and literally say that all or most non SJW or Anti were rapists or murderers.

Hey I know I'm a bit late, but I just stumbled over armored sectpic's video about you trying to go in to open discussion. And I was instantly hyped because I only know sceptic channels from the more conservative/ Anti-feminism side. But I never found a good pro feminism channel that really engages in this form of open discussion and critical thinking. So I wanted to thank you for that and I hope that you will do great in the future. Maybe I find more pro feminism Channels similiar to your channel, that I can hear more of both sides to one topic^^ I know one german channel at least but I also want to know about the american side of the debate :D
I am 100% in support of this, I love anyone who is open to debate and learning others points of views. This change is so good and I feel you will feel better in general.

Thanks so much for this video. As a feminist myself, I've been growing increasingly uncomfortable with the 'us vs them' stance that I've noticed other feminists taking recently. I think we really need there to be more discussions and debates between all sides, rather than just the insult-slinging that too many seem to be favouring at the moment
I used to be a feminist but then I saw that the current feminist movement is not about equality but is more about female supremacy. So now I label myself as an equalitarian.

Nothing to feel wrong about. She's taken a big step in advocating an unpopular opinion within her "circle," reaching out to her opposition to open a discussion. That takes bravery and is worthy of respect imo.
