Perfection aren’t they? Mood-setters par excellence. Every note is immaculate, every nuance perfectly timed. There’s a reason Steely Dan are SO loved by samplers.
I love that SteelyDan is your favorite band! I get excited when I see you’re about to discover more Heaven with each new song you hear. I was a teenager when many of these songs were out, they are engrained in my heart and soul
Love that you listened to the best version... the more widely heard version has a sax outro, which is fantastic. But this version, with the guitar outro, is my favorite. Killer track.
Two Against Nature was the Dan's 2nd to final album released in 2000 and the best track is Cousin Dupree, a song about a slacker who is sleeping on his aunt's couch and discovers that his younger girl cousin is all grown up and starts to fantasize about her. It was their first studio album after a 20 year hiatus and was very successful.
While Jeff was used by Steely Dan for many recordings , Victor Feldman did the hand percussion on this song (congas). Also featured were Glenn Fry , Don Henley & Tim Schmitt of the Eagles on backing vocals.
Jeff Porcaro, ever self-critical, highlighted this particular song as one of his best. He wanted to bring out the "snakey feeling" and he really succeeded. See his instructional video for more info.
The first Steely Dan song I heard was Bodhisattva, and I was an immediate addict for Dan. In college, we anxiously awaited the next album. Someone would show up with it, the doobies fired up, and the record player would be turning. ❤
That break of silence - no static at all - would never have happened on AM radio where there is always a constant noise floor. In those days FM was not only stereo, but had silence and empty space, making this the essential sound of FM
Fun Fact when FM (stereo) radio started in the 1960's it was very experimental. Some stations played entire albums without interrupting. Not many businesses wanted to spend money on advertising on Jazz and Rock stations so there were very few commercials. This is the groovy era that Steely Dan is singing about in the "FM" song.
This song is for the movie "FM" about a radio station that refuses to play certain ad types. As we got a movie about an edgy radio station, we then got a TV series with the same vibe "WKRP in Cincinnati". This radio station on episode one changes its music type with comical results. Just about every radio topic is explored in the series. It ended too soon but got a good run with several iconic scenes and episodes. Some radio stations are mostly music being played today with ad breaks. Others are combo talk and music with ads. WKRP had episodes about what ads we're prepared to air or decline.
Been listening to and loving the coolest, most low down, irreverent group of perfectionists in modern music since my big sis Bibs threw them on the Technics turntable in summer '74. Like you said my man, nothin to say, just to play....and appreciate!😮 Mahalos plenty from da Hawaiian Islands brah!
Great reaction! I am really glad you appreciate the unmatched quality of music by The Dan! I still don’t understand why you don’t wear headphones of some sort, as there is so much music in many songs that you might never hear without them, plus it adds a completely different dynamic to the sound with complete stereo as you probably well know!
THANK YOU BROTHER!!! NOW TIME OUT OF MIND SHOULD BE NEXT!!! P.S. WHEN YOU HAVE TIME YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THE EXTENDED VERSION OF FM. WITH THE GUITAR AND HORNET SOLO!!!😊😊😊
Great reactions for one of the best groups ever! Take a listen to 'Home at Last' That's my favorite Steely Dan song of 100's of favorite Steely Dan songs!!
It's congas, but you can call them anything you want~ and I agree, it feels like a tease! Even though I've heard it hundreds of times, I am still waiting for those congas to take off on a run. Lol. I don't know what your name is, but you clearly could travel back to the 70's with us and fit in perfectly! YOU are who Steely Dan wrote this music for~ the eyeroll when the sax came in WAS EVERYTHING!! Love you, thanks for this~ 🥰🥰🥰
Bad Sneakers, Dr Wu, Daddy Don't Live in New York City, Kid Charlemagne, Ricky Don't Lose That Number, Only A Fool, Chain Lightning, The Caves of Altamira.
As you seem to know, SD is unbreakable. This means that you cannot overplay the music to the point where you need a long break from it. Breaks to listen to other music - sure. But you’re never going to put it away and leave it.
I believe it is Victor Feldman on the congas. This is one of my favs by Walter and Donald. It was originally released on the Soundtrack Album for the movie FM. Take care...
Just got on your Steely Dan train so forgive me if you’ve listened to a couple of these, but: Gaslighting Abbie, Green Earrings, Black Cow, Night By Night, Slang of Ages, Lunch With Gina, Babylon Sisters, Glamour Profession, Your Gold Teeth, Godwhacker, Turn that Heartbeat Over Again, Do It Again, Gaucho, Haitian Divorce, Kid Charlemagne, The Caves of Altamira, FM (No Static at All- extended version), Chain Lightning, Black Friday, Daddy Don’t Live in That New York City no More, Cousin Dupree, Sign in Stranger, Josie, Home at Last, Third World Man, West of Hollywood, Green Book. Just to suggest a few… 😂
Music for musicians. Jazz artists have covered some Steely Dan songs. Like they do with Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Beattles, Temptations, talent admires talent. Another great reaction. Keep on trucking my friend......✌️ But seriously, check out Johnny and Edgar Winter - "Tobacco Road". Live video. I think you'll find it very interesting.
@10:25 MCA bought out everything on the ABC afiliated labels. ABC completely divested itself from the music business. All Steely Dan albums were on MCA records after that. There's a "FM Reprise" also that is just an instrumental of this groove with soloing. It was the B-Side to the single and was on the soundtrack. Some sour notes made it onto the "reprise" and they are hilarious.
Youre too young to know this but in the early 1970's FM radio was a brand new media to listen to great music on the radio. It was far cleaner than AM radio and that is what these lyrics are about. When he sings, "No Static at ALL, FMmmmm" Those girls would succumb to a guys FM radio music because they may not have ever heard it before back when this song was written. Cool song, and I was around when these lyrics had meaning.
As some have already requested, please check out KID CHARLEMAGNE. Also, I suggest, THE FEZ and GREEN EARRINGS, all from their Royal Scam album, (I think their funkiest album). Some of my favorites!
I have been listeming to these same songs for over 40 years and it never gets stale. Musical Geniuses.
We told you….SD is a genre all by itself! Glad to know you are as addicted to them as we are! LOL
Perfection aren’t they?
Mood-setters par excellence.
Every note is immaculate, every nuance perfectly timed.
There’s a reason Steely Dan are SO loved by samplers.
No static refers to the fact that AM radio wasn't as clear, FM had higher fidelity therefore a better sound quality.
And " static " refers to getting grief from your ladies.
@@stevevasell429 The double entendre. Yes.
Time Out of Mind. Their most groovy track, about drugs'n'stuff.
Love that song!
Happiest drug song ever.
Make heroin sound awesome!
Many of their songs share the same theme.
I play Steely Dan in my car all the time. A timeless band.
I love watching your eyes rolling back in your head when the saxophone comes in lol. The Dan is amazing, aren't they?
Been listening to them since the 70s... it just doesn't get old. So great to see the music living on.
Kid Charlemagne and Sign in Stranger are my suggestions.
DONT take me alive and glamour profession
They’re amazing! They’re never in a hurry with their music. My favorite band for decades
Bodhisattva.......badass!
Best music ever made.
All Steely Dan albums should be listened to from beginning to end. Even the order of the songs is perfect.
Bought “Can’t Buy A Thrill” as an 18 yr old in ‘73,haven’t looked back since.
My favourite band, and I’m a Brit with a ton of choice.
There are four versions of the song... I could listen to them back to back to back to back to...
Congas are big tall drums that you stand up to play, bongos are little high-pitched ones you can play sitting in your lap. These are congas
Chillax with Steely Dan and his cool voice !
When your eyes close and your head starts bopping along with the beat…well that kind of says it all, especially with this song.
Im subscribing because you love Steely Dan
I love that SteelyDan is your favorite band! I get excited when I see you’re about to discover more Heaven with each new song you hear. I was a teenager when many of these songs were out, they are engrained in my heart and soul
I am very much enjoying your reaction videos. You give a good analysis but, more important, you let yourself feel the music. Thanks!
Green Earrings
Love that you listened to the best version... the more widely heard version has a sax outro, which is fantastic. But this version, with the guitar outro, is my favorite. Killer track.

I just love your reactions! You just played my favorite Steely Dan song. I could listen to that song all night. Thank you! ❤️
Steely Dan
Rikki Don't Lose That Number
Kid Charlemagne and Hey Nineteen gonna have you GROOVIN’!
The title theme for the film FM (1978)
The great Jeff Porcaro on drums and percussion, the Groovemaster. Solid as a rock!
While Jeff was used by Steely Dan for many recordings , Victor Feldman did the hand percussion on this song (congas). Also featured were Glenn Fry , Don Henley & Tim Schmitt of the Eagles on backing vocals.
@@rogerdaly6326 Check Wikipedia, Jeff did some percussion also on FM.
@@SeaMark782 Thats where i got the info on Victor. Don't take me wrong , i'm a big fan of Jeff's work. Just trying to give Victor his props.
Jeff Porcaro, ever self-critical, highlighted this particular song as one of his best. He wanted to bring out the "snakey feeling" and he really succeeded.
See his instructional video for more info.
Jeff is credited with drums and percussion! makes sense as his dad also played drums and percussion in his career!
This Steely Dan song is soooooo Steely.
This was the title song for a 1978 movie "FM"
King of the World, Night By Night, Green Earrings. Just plain FIRE deep cuts.
Steely Dan so good. Check out Hey Nineteen next.
FM is my favorite. Love seeing new folks discover Steely Dan.
You will really like the Fez off the Royal Scam.Enjoy your journey with so many great songs by The Dan.
The whole Royal Scam album
Josie
Yes , YES and hell yes
I second that!
Absolutely!!!! The whole Aja album is awesome(their best), but Josie is a perfect mix of rock, jazz and funk. My favorite SD song.
The first Steely Dan song I heard was Bodhisattva, and I was an immediate addict for Dan. In college, we anxiously awaited the next album. Someone would show up with it, the doobies fired up, and the record player would be turning. ❤
"Home at Last"...😉
Thanks for all your hard work and bringing us your amazing commentary and music.
Even as a teen always hit me how clean the sound it!! Polished!
My Old School. Phenomenal and fun!!
That break of silence - no static at all - would never have happened on AM radio where there is always a constant noise floor. In those days FM was not only stereo, but had silence and empty space, making this the essential sound of FM
This was 1st date jams when I was in 7th grade.
Remember Bozz Scags?
..
With Jeff Porcaro on drums! Just like FM!

Walter Becker with the guitar solo!
Still have my FM T-shirt I bought at a concert in 92 I believe. 😅
Their first song Do it Again had congas.
"Bodhisattva"!
Steely Dan "My old School" is a must listen!
HOME AT LAST I CAN'T REQUEST IT ENOUGH !!
C’monnnnn, “bodhisattva” is the bomb !!!!
Welcome to the club.
Great reactions! Welcome to the coolest era of music...
Walter Becker on guitar solos. AND Bass.
I'm here for your future soundtrack video! Thank you!
This is the ultimate "getover" song
You know a song is great when the Eagles sing background

Start with their first hit. Do It Again.
Bad Sneakers, Dr Wu, Daddy Don't Live in New York City, Kid Charlemagne, Ricky Don't Lose That Number, Only A Fool, Chain Lightning, The Caves of Altamira.
I recommend Haitian Divorce. Another great song by Steely Dan.
Kid Charlemagne...true story. Great song
Hear the Katy Lied album, especially Dr. Wu and Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More. It's sort of the gateway to the Aja album.
With 20 year old Jeff Porcaro on drums!
The best!
I knew you'd like 'FM' 👍😁 Hopefully you get to Babylon Sisters soon 😎
This album was the cleanest recorded album I ever had.
THE BOSTON RAG is a recomenDation there Bro

Babylon Sisters. the one that first hooked me
Haven't seen anyone else suggest it but my personal favorite is My Old School.
You've only got about 20 or so incredible songs to go. And 20 Really good ones.
Steely Dan .... with strings.
Congas are larger and are mounted on stands that set on the floor. Bongos are much smaller and be played in your lap
Perfect for The Horizontal Bop.

Dude, do a SD live marathon.... Play all of The Royal Scam, Aja, Gaucho, Pretzel Logic.....
Listen to Josie by Steely Dan. The melodies are extremely similar in both songs.

If you haven’t done Deacon Blues and Aja you must. And get ahold of the Movie FM. The best of the best
If you haven't yet, react to Deacon Blues please! ❤
He just did that one this past week i believe or the week before.
Gotta check out the song Dirty Work!
Subbed. Peace my man
Need to hear Time out of Mind and The Glamour Profession
There are Bongos in "Do it Again".
You should check out Dr Wu next, it’s an amazing song and very groovy
