Absolutely their own genre, which makes them so unique and timeless. Love to see people react to the them for the first time. I have been listening to them for 50 years and I never grow tired of them. RIP, Walter Becker.
I'd have to agree. When I first heard Steely Dan it sounded like a new type of music.I couldn't put a name on it. I had the same reaction when I heard the Brecker Brothers "Sneakin Up Behind You".
@@chrisweidner4768 I bought the Greatest Hits Album Show Biz Kidz as my first Steely Dan never realizing I knew all of the songs on the album from the radio but never knew the artist until then.
Be aware that you were going backwards as “do it again” was their first hit in 1973. It’s a bit confusing because the first part of the song sounds like a western and the second part sounds like gambling addiction in Vegas. Peg was a hit around 1977. They had moved much closer to Jazz by that time and were no longer touring.
One of the greatest, most innovative, and forward thinking bands ever! Truly ahead of their time! Music is STILL trying to catch up! You're in for a ride because the catalog is deep!

Steely Dan is a great American rock band founded in 1971. They had a lot of great hits such as "Do It Again", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "Josie", "Aja", "Kid Charlemagne", "Reelin' In The Years", "Deacon Blues", "FM", "Show Biz Kids", "My Old School", "Babylon Sisters" etc."
it isnt rock. Jazz-RnB-Funk-Pop Fusion. As someone above said, its own genre. pandora struggles to combine other artists in a steely dan channel, theyre that unique.
My very, very country super fan father is a huge Steely Dan fan after I forced him to listen to it on a cross-country road trip. His favorite song is Do It Again.
My friend, the Dan is one of the most rewarding rabbit holes you can dive into. They are their own genre... mixing all music styles with jazz, and making great songs. Very hard to find a bad song. I would go back and start with their first album, and then go in order, past Aja and finally Gaucho.... that way you'll hear them the way we did growing up in their music. They are a 'desert island' choice for me and just about everyone I know. Have a good trip!
You have now become musically born again. SD is an amalgam of musical styles that has never been duplicated and is timeless. This is musical perfection, Black Cow, FM, Dr. Wu, Aja, the list is long, and the music immaculate. You'll start listening to music differently, enjoy the ride.
"Not what I was expecting" is a comment that you will say often when you go through their catalogue. So many different genres and I will enjoy watching your reactions going forward. Great reaction!
I was 8 years old in LA when I heard this on the radio and INSTANTLY fell in love. Been a hardcore fan of The Dan ever since. It makes me immeasurably happy to see your happy reaction.
their sound changes as much as Bowie's does. Different with every album. And so complex... every instrument showcased. They're awesome. BTW, that's Michael McDonald singing "Peg" on the refrain.
They have a lot of great music! After listening to Steely Dan for more than 30 years, my favorite song is " Babylon Sisters " That Gaucho album is really good.
This is one of the Dan's jazz-funk songs, but they touch on almost every genre, and excellently. If you go down the rabbit hole, you will never look at music the same. My personal favorite is Kid Charlemagne, but there's dozens of others. You won't be disappointed, ever. Their lyrics are quite amazing, too, sometimes cryptic or sarcastic, but always brilliant.
my favourite - "rikki don't lose that number" should be next, it's melodic, perfectly structured, and gorgeous. steely dan make no bones about it not being their favourite and stopped playing it live years ago, despite it being their highest charting, most successful song. i think you'd love it ❤
That song has one of my absolute favorite lead guitar parts. The chords played to wrap it up as it goes into the bridge, 'You tell yourself you're not my kind....' always gives me chills, even 40-something years later.
I believe that "Do It Again" (studio version only) was their first big hit back in 1972. So I would start there. I have been waiting for you to discover them and go down their rabbit hole. Prepare yourself because the rabbit hole is massively deep.
I forgot to mention that the album version and the single version of "Do It Again" are different. The single version is shorter and it omits the organ solo. If possible, you should react to the album version because the organ solo is DYNAMITE.
Just about every single song from this group is fantastic!... This particular album when it was produced was one of the most expensive and technologically advanced productions ever made back in the day when this came out. Steely Dan were die-hard perfectionists in the studio. They threw away tons of recordings because they weren't exactly right.
