A good teaching and team building moment there. Profars admission of guilt is especially telling. It takes maturity to not need to point out that Kim may have been in the wrong spot to try to absolve yourself in the media. And, the many egos in that dugout stayed cool and settled.
That's the vibe you need in August and September. Know that "we're in the race, so don't f*ck up." That stuff could cost dearly in a short playoff series.
Profar is a league veteran. If manny Machado makes a mistake does anyone come talk to him about it? No. The talking is purposely done in front of cameras in my opinion. Take him to the tunnel

I actually seriously respect Profar for this. When you're in the outfield, just launching it to third is usually not a good idea, because you could totally miss and award an easy base. No easy decision there. And he didn't throw his teammate under the bus either, even though it was him that screwed up.
Second, and the fact that Profar has decided to take all the smoke for this tells me a lot about his character. I am convinced some coach is showing the full vid of this to the manager and highlighting Kim's role in this as well.

And if there was a play at third which there was, the SS wasn’t going to be part of the play - they don’t need him to be the relay on a short throw. I don’t get LF’s thinking.
Profar is having a very good season, both offensively and defensively. Been really good in the clutch.
His next RBI should not count. Because he gift-wrapped a run for the other team here.

He's a lot older than Soto, been around for a long time, came out a year after Machado, they're acting as if he is a 19 or 20 year old kid, He was with Texas and used to do all that shit when he played for Hickory, Single A, and was showboating, hate that shit, nothing is worse than a guy hitting a homerun, admire ball til it drops in crowd, Especially when the team is losing in the 8th inning, Acuna, Tatis, Soto, a lot more could care less about the game, as long as I got mine, piss on the game, Acuna hit a bomb in Miami a few years ago, 8th inning, down 9 0, admired it, took forever to run bases, then he wants to get mad when they drill him the first pitch of next game, how bout when Acuna hit a 400 foot single? The hesitation was definitely the issue here. Even without a cutoff, he should've thrown in. He has the arm for it.

@@ProducedByAllah Pitcher or catcher is likely backing up that throw though. Plus, if he throws it to 3rd immediately, Rojas likely doesn't even attempt to take 3rd, so an overthrow doesn't let Rojas advance.
The hesitation is what killed him but even then he was trying to make sure everyone is in the right position. But shit happens and everyone makes mistakes especially young players. This happened to me my first highschool game they switched me from third base to play center. Except I under threw the ball
@@ProducedByAllah Cutoffs are crucial, but even at 41 I can still make that throw from the LF wall to 3B. Profar didn't need the cutoff man to gauge an accurate throw there. As a major leaguer, Profar gets it there in his sleep every day of the week. Just throw it.

I think when you have a good team it's easier to take criticism. Or when it's a guy who's doing it right like Machado, a lot of what you see (at least what i've seen) is guys coming down on young guys for making mistake, and the vet is making as many if not more mistakes. It's one thing to speak to me from a position of experience if you're squared away yourself, don't correct me if you're fucking up just as bad, at least don't do it public.

Profar seems like a good dude and has one of the best names in the game second to maybe Brusdar Graterol. Even going back to his two little league world series trips. When his Curacao team lost the championship game to Hawaii in 05 in a walkoff, Curacao shook hands with Hawaii, then bowed to each foul line. Always remembered how classy that team acted in that painful moment. Seems like he had good sportsmanship/ coaching from the jump

I admire Profar owning up to it in the dugout and on Twitter. While there might be a reason to justify the action, the mistake was made, and it cost his team. He eventually took full responsibility, instead of throwing Kim under the bus for cutting off to 2nd instead of 3rd.

There is a time and place to make your point but Profar really fucked up on this occasion and unfortunately it is the sort of dumb mistake culture that plagues the Padres!

No, you're just reading into what jomboy said. If Profar threw in right away, it's a double and that's it, there was no play, he didn't need a cut off, he just needed to throw the ball....all know this which is why they just talked to Profar, who is not the brightest tool
I’m not saying that Profar didn’t make a mistake. He definitely did and should have thrown it in. However the shortstop also made a mental error by covering the wrong base. Everyone should have been trying to keep it a double and not everyone did.
More than one person can make a mistake on the same play. Profar was at the warning track. You usually want a cutoff man in that situation because the last thing you want is to throw to third and then the ball gets away. Still, he should have thrown the ball in

I feel like Soto is the real hero in this spot, Machado and Musgrove were right but a little confrontational, where as Soto takes him under his wing and just talks with him calmly and after he does everything was good. Good job Soto!

Sometimes tough love is good. He's young, he has been on the time quite a while despite his age and it shows he's one of the guys. If he were not they wouldn't even bother because he would be gone and demoted by then. Good job on Soto but I think it's okay what Machado and Musgrove did. No, there wasn't much of a chance at 2nd, but because Profar took his sweet ass time throwing it in, he created the opportunity for Rojas to get the 3rd all by himself....a Triple was never in question until Profar went mental. The coverage of this was perfect. I had a different perspective when the news first leaked. It was a mistake, mistakes happen. It won't happen again. The team did a great job of showing composure and understanding. This is a good team that demands the best but also picks each other up when they're down.

I come back to this one a lot because its refreshing to see not just one guy but pretty much a whole team act incredibly mature and treat their teammates like humans rather than punching bags when they make a mistake. Everybody did, I think it’s because the announcer created the narrative in our minds-with the video close in of Profar. The announcer’s interpretation looks correct until you see the other wider video angle which shows Kim (the SS) out of position.
I’m glad it was merely a stupid play and not an egregiously boneheaded play. The Padres lost by three runs, so the mistake wasn’t crucial to the loss. Profar needs to play better but so does the whole team. I think they were playing better before the trades (and without Tatís, the PEDophile).

Profar is also mostly an IF at 2b until 2021 while Soto is an all-star OF since the beginning so it does make sense I think

What's really comforting to me about this as a Padres fan, is how differently this went from the Tatis/Machado thing late in the season last year. Even though they're not playing up to their potential right now, it shows that the vibe in the clubhouse is definitely better than last season.

I saw this moment posted on another channel (not gonna name names) and it was just Machado and Musgrove gettin on Profar. What they didn’t show was everything after, Soto puttin his arm around him and Machado talking to him, the apology to Mugrove. Puts a whole new light on it and shows they are a much more connected team working together. Thanks Jomboy for showing all the important parts

In Kim's defense, I do think he thought the play was to 2nd, but he also mirrors Profar's reading of the ball, running towards center field expecting the ball to take that bounce. Instead, the ball just falls flat and in Profar's readjusting to get the ball, the play should've been relayed to 3rd. Also, even if Kim is playing 2nd, had Profar relayed the ball, Rojas wasn't going to run 3. Good teammates tho.
I was pretty much thinning the same thing, if the ball had bounced straight up to Profar it might have been close at second

The only way that play is close is if Profar throws straight to second. I was always taught gaps and wall bangs are automatic doubles and to cut third. I think it was a mental mistake of Kim’s.
I'd hardly say Profar is a young guy--he's been in the league almost 10 years lol. But huge of him to take blame 100% even though he had the right idea as soon as he fielded the ball off the wall

This wasn't a hustle issue. It was a judgment issue. You can't blame Profar for not throwing it in to an empty base and he probably didn't think Rojas would gamble on taking third. If he throws to the cutoff and Rojas sees there's nobody on third he's gonna get there before Musgrove does to cover.
Machado was on third.
You can blame Profar. He either throws quick to the cutoff, like most people are taught. even if it was in the wrong place. Or you make a hard throw to 3rd. On top of all of this if the 3rd baseman let the ball come to him to make the tag the runners out anyway.

No, it was nothing that heated. Tatis wasn’t happy with a call and he was chirping so Machado had told him to stop because they needed him and that every game mattered. It wasn’t really an argument, just some tough love

There's a bit on the Compound this week where Zack and Ian talk about how hard it is knowing where to throw and when to go for the out. Feels relevant here.
In this situation, it is irrelevant as to where the shortstop is positioned. If Profar did indeed decide to throw to second to try to get the runner, he wouldnt use a cut off. The SS was out of position.
Left fielder myself...playing a ball hit off the wall, and with a speedy runner like Rojas, you immediately turn and look for third. If the cutoff man isn't there, you air it out to 3rd base. You don't have time to orchestrate the infielders. Profar turned a double into a triple. Great base running though!!!

Every video that beat out Jomboy was saying that Profar was taunting Miguel Rojas and challenged him to run. Those video uploaded way before Jomboy was so dead wrong. Glad to see a full indepth analysis from Jomboy about this thing because the videos all made it out to make Profar into jerk for arguing back against irate Manny Machado. Now we know all those videos uploaded last night after the play was seriously flawed. Thanks Jomboy for pointing the whole situation correctly.

Thanks for posting this. I had only listened to the broadcasters' version of it and it made me consider Profar a chump. Still a dumb play but at least he wasn't trying to "dare" Rojas to take third. This is a great video.
Does anyone recall an outfielder overtly taunting or daring a runner in a manner similar? There's plenty of subtle gamesmanship stuff that goes on for sure... I don't believe he was challenging the runner here.

Everyone went after Profar but they should of also spoke to the SS for being at the wrong base. Yes, Profar should of just thrown the ball but SS also NEEDS to understand his mistake as well.

I’ve been a big fan of him all season. Great defensively, got some good hitting, but always a great attitude. This video made me like him a whole lot more- and I hope we (San Diego) keep him around.

I've seen the mets pitchers this season cover any empty base or be back up in case of a misfire. He might've gotten the out if musgrove was heading there or at least kept the runner on second
Machado *was* covering third...he held the ball because he thought the cutoff man was out of position.

The thing was that he was already planning to throw it to the cutoff man when the ball went passed him. He’s looking for the cutoff as soon as he turns around. Once he saw the cutoff behind the runner, if he threw it, the runner would’ve advanced anyway. He could’ve still just threw it in the direction of third base and that would halted the runner but I see where the mistake came from.
