This is almost ENTIRELY the catcher's fault. You can see everything else without much explanation but the go ahead run scoring, he throws too early. He has more room to run him back to third base, and he should know he has no support from the first baseman yet. But he still tosses the ball and the runner darts back to home base with no resistance. The catcher gave up 2nd base, 3rd base, and arguably the go ahead run.

You don’t need to win to be profitable. They’re milking Ohtani’s popularity for every nickel, and it’s a lot of nickels. Ohtani sells jerseys and memorabilia. Ohtani puts butts in seats. His contract is up after this season. He is getting paid +/- $5 million a year. Trout is getting around $35 million a year. ($426 million/12 years) with 9 years to go on his contract. With all his injuries, he’s the biggest cost. Team ownership is more likely thinking about litigation to break the contract, not changing management. I don’t think anyone wants to buy the team with Trout on the payroll. He’s a $300 million liability. He is going to be on and off the IL, mostly on it, for the rest of his career. I bet the Angels find a way to pay him to go away.
POV a M’s fan here: You have the three fastest players on your team (Jrod, Haggerty, Moore) involved on this play, and Julio has one of the highest hard hit percentages in baseball. This is why Ty France and Julio’s method of “just put the ball somewhere hard” works great in these situations. #GoMs
all he had to do was chase him all the way down the line, teasing like he was going to throw it, instead of tossing it away when he was only 10 feet from home plate. Brutal.
I love the view from that camera angle, being able to see the whole diamond and watch all the runners at the same time, and all the infielders. I wish they used that angle on TV broadcasts regularly. Lets you see SO much more of what's going on.
Im hoping some day in the coming years youll be able to pick which camera angles you want to view live. I don't see it happening soon, but maybe in 10-20 years? Who knows
Watch the catcher's reaction @ 6:56 when he looks toward home and sees no one covering and then he turns to 3rd base and sees the fielder out of position.
@@BobbyBrainzzz A major league infielder should be able to determine if they can turn a double play based on how hard the ball was hit and how fast the guy who hit the ball is....in this case Velasquez shouldve had the wherewithal to realize the play in front of him and turn a double play

@@thepowerofmyth No the Angels were dead before that. They already had a 14 game losing streak under their belt, and a new (possibly worse) manager. The fight was what a lot of fans thought would get them back to form. We all see how that worked out, lol.
@@horrorfan1122 oh that's right. They must have had a resurgence after that.. bc I'm pretty sure they still had a better record than the Ms then by a couple games
Love the content…maybe someone else has mentioned this, but when Santana was up in the 9th, he had a 2-2 count and he convinced the ump that is was 3-1. The walk followed suit, but if it was a 3-2 count after, who knows what would have happened? Just interesting. Go M’s!!
Another interesting part of the first run play: in his postgame interview, Haggerty said he took off to home trying to get them to throw and maybe get into a rundown, hoping to take away the chance for a double play. Like Jomboy says, not sure there was a real chance to turn one, but interesting thought process from the runner.
They could have got a double play but the run would have scored. 2b throws to first to get Julio on the force. The first base runner by this point has turned and is running hard to get to second. Get him in a run down or on the tag. However the runner would have scored in this scenario, but in hindsight it would have been better for the angels.
Most of this is on the catcher. He is the reason the guy got to second and then stole 3rd on him (and the pitcher), but he has to recognize that 1st baseman is at 1st and the Pitcher is in front of him and neither are behind him covering the plate. He cannot take two steps and get rid of the ball, he needs to at the very least slowly run at the runner and move him back towards third, holding onto the ball giving his guys time to back him up and make the runner commit more to going back to third. He instead takes 2 steps with the ball and gets rid of the ball way faster than he ever should in a rundown. That's all on him. Edit: I posted this before finishing the video. Then the catcher drops the ball on the tag. Idk what his deal is. Too much in his own head about the previous plays, young inexperienced, pressure getting to him, or just lazy and not a very smart IQ player but dam that inning is all on him.
Very true. But, I would say that first run is also on the third baseman. Should have just thrown it to the first baseman instead of to the SS. Had he done so, the first baseman may have been able to beat out the runner to home and make a diving tag.
Agree 100%! That catcher just didn’t have his head in the game. I don’t follow the Angels, but I can assume he’s a good ball player to be playing in the bigs. Maybe just having a terrible inning! He’s the QB, and can see the whole field and everyone else, including the runners. So when he got the ball, after that hot shot up the middle, (a) he should’ve known that his pitcher and 1st baseman were nowhere near backing him up on the run down; (b) he should’ve bought time by holding on to the ball longer and slowly running the runner closer to 3rd (the sprinting 1st baseman was almost at home plate); or (c) he could’ve just eaten the ball, and stayed at home plate. That would’ve loaded the bases, but at least he did his most important job on that play, i.e. protect home plate!
@@AegisRick its a routine play, run the guy back to the base he cam from. when he commits throw him out, if you dont get him then at least he didnt advance, pickle 101
Catcher should have held on to the ball longer and run him further to 3rd. But the 3rd baseman also should have stayed at the bag instead of running in towards the runner. Weird circumstance for sure, but bad execution.
Nevin and the Angels fell asleep and didn't protest home plate ump's blown call on Santana. Ump got duped by Santana and changed count from 2-2 to 3-1. Many commentators have stated this already but it is an important part of this inning that is a total Angel train wreck.
U guys are exactly like that team in the Major League movie. Except u never turn it around. You're like a constant replay year after year of the 1st parts of the Major League movie. I got no room to talk tho. I'm a phillies fan & we have the worst overall winning percentage in baseball history
Another video popped up for this breakdown and I immediately searched for Jomboy's. Guy's a gift to sports. Knowing very little about baseball strategy, I was thinking double-play depth when it was tied. Bad case you get one out and the run scores, worst case you get nothing for a ground ball but now runners on 1st and 2nd instead of 1st and 3rd. Getting no outs for 2 runs is horrid.
The mistake on the rundown was the catcher throwing the ball to the third baseman too soon. Run him back and make the throw 3/4 of the way to the base he is coming from and throw at the half way point when advancing to the next base. Additionally you don’t want the third baseman stepping in front of the bag and shortening the base path for that same reason. You want the player covering home to step in front and cut the baseline down on his way back to third. Make his path home longer than his path back to third. Obviously easier said than done in real time at full speed.
Regardless the first basemen had a decent chance of making the play at home. He looked like he would've beat the runner at home, and maybe made a tag with a good enough throw.
This is a perfect example of the weird shit in baseball that I love. And you Jomboy, are the perfect person to break it all down for us. Thanks again for what you do.
Santana taking the walk on the 3-2 count was interesting as well. The umpire lost track of the count... called the passed ball a strike and then forgot he did.
This was the first baseball game I've been to since watching jomboy, and when i saw this happen i got so excited that there might be a breakdown of a game I went to
GOMS! It took me a while after the game to figure out why Rojas goes back to third base instead of home to throw out Haggerty… There’s nobody covering home 😂! I figured he just made a colossal error and somebody called for him to throw back to third. Lmao what an inning, may never see anything like that again.
Beautiful. The energy in the pub here on the Eastside when this happened was ecstatic. 5min of shock followed by several rounds of pure excitement. And then to do basically the same thing the next night? Fucking amazing!
New things I learned from this game, and series. 1) FARTSLAM. Fielder Allows Runner To Score Like A Moron. The basis of this entire video. 2) Surrender Cobra. As seen here 4:18 3) Tungsten Arm. The now legendary tweet in regards to Angels continually losing despite having Trout (when he's not injured) and Ohtani doing incredible things. As a bonus, I also learned about: 4) NOBLETIGER. No Outs, Bases Loaded, Ending with Team Incapable of Getting Easy Run.
Now I see why the Angels are so bad despite having the 2 best players in MLB. Thanks for the in depth explanation! Sincerely, A guy who really only keeps track of baseball through Jomboy and Fuzzy videos
Best line I’ve ever heard “here’s what happened” I may have used it before I heard it on this video but every time I hear it I remember the times I used it untangle that one
Watched this in contrast to the cardinals double plays against the Mets and the cubs last season. Really shows the difference between the good teams vs the bad
The center fielder coming in to cover second base (on the first play) was the only heads up defense that I saw. As a Pirates fan I am used to bad baseball IQ.
sorry we must have watched a different video, he was WAY late in coming in to help defend...he should have been there well before that, the entire outfield and 1st baseman receive an F for their effort on that rundown play.
By far the best breakdowns in sports, how does jomboy not have 10 mill subs?? Looked like Jomboy was a high school coach breaking down film for his players😁 These guys get paid to do this smh
Catcher has to have more awareness of where everyone is b4 he throws to 3B if he runs him back 2 more steps everyone is in position and runner doesnt make 3rd run
In college, I played first base and we got plays like this run-down between third and home every so often, like all teams do. One time, my brain just took a nap in the middle of it and I watched the whole thing standing there like an idiot. Never even occurred to me that I should break for home until it was all over. Awful feeling. At least in the Angels' case, it was somewhat understandable.
The body language by the Angels players is pathetic. None of them look like they want to be there. As soon as that runner stole third you can see it in the players that they knew the game was over. I think the higher ups in that organization are what’s wrong with the Angels. Sad to see.
If your team is ever in a slump and you feel bad just go and watch the Angels play for a few innings and you will 100% feel better about your teams performance 👍!
Thanks so much for doing this, Jimmy! I bet the Angels find a way to pay him to go away.
As an Angel fan I endorse this comment
@@MarcosElMalo2 bros blaming Trout lol. Christ
angel fans are so fair weather anyways so they don't really care. i know because i live in orange county.
@@TryPuttingItInRice first person in the history of baseball to claim trout is anything but one of the best ever what a taste
A snap shot of the entire Angels season.
POV a M’s fan here:
You have the three fastest players on your team (Jrod, Haggerty, Moore) involved on this play, and Julio has one of the highest hard hit percentages in baseball. This is why Ty France and Julio’s method of “just put the ball somewhere hard” works great in these situations. #GoMs
Which is the idea the Royals used to win their world series... Kinda smart 😅
That catcher needs to rethink his approach. Holy cow he literally threw the game away by himself
all he had to do was chase him all the way down the line, teasing like he was going to throw it, instead of tossing it away when he was only 10 feet from home plate.
Worth saying that Velazquez could have gotten a pretty easy double play on Ty France's grounder, holding it to 1 run
France had all the speed of molasses!
That was very frustrating to see live, for a guy who's supposedly known for his defense that was a pretty stupid decision
While I agree, why is Nevin playing the infield in then? Sends the wrong message to your fielders that he wants them to go home.
@@BobbyBrainzzz A major league infielder should be able to determine if they can turn a double play based on how hard the ball was hit and how fast the guy who hit the ball is....in this case Velasquez shouldve had the wherewithal to realize the play in front of him and turn a double play
That catcher is definitely getting released after this lol
I was at this game. Traumatized. May never revisit Angels Stadium
catcher had a heck of an inning there
The worst thing about this is their inning started pretty good until that butched catched throw
Why didn't the 2b move over towards the errant throw? Why didn't the cf run in to back up second? It's not just the catcher.. Was the entire team asleep?
@@FadkinsDiet well nobody thought Stassi would even throw to second there so they are caught completely off guard
You missed Santana walking on three balls
Thanks for this brutal reminder that even though Trout is supposed to come back tomorrow, it just doesn't matter since this team SUCKS!!!!
The were so good in the beginning of the season, then hit that record losing streak...
@@rring44 all started w the mariners fight 😂
@@thepowerofmyth No the Angels were dead before that. They already had a 14 game losing streak under their belt, and a new (possibly worse) manager. The fight was what a lot of fans thought would get them back to form. We all see how that worked out, lol.
@@horrorfan1122 oh that's right. They must have had a resurgence after that.. bc I'm pretty sure they still had a better record than the Ms then by a couple games
As a Mariner's fan, this was amazing to watch live and i was hoping there would be a breakdown.
I counted like 4 mistakes by the catcher in less than 10 pitches. Amazing.
As a mariner fan I was so ready for this breakdown as it was happening
Love the content…maybe someone else has mentioned this, but when Santana was up in the 9th, he had a 2-2 count and he convinced the ump that is was 3-1. The walk followed suit, but if it was a 3-2 count after, who knows what would have happened? Just interesting. Go M’s!!
God I wish I could have seen this game! I'm dying! Thanks for covering this.
Another interesting part of the first run play: in his postgame interview, Haggerty said he took off to home trying to get them to throw and maybe get into a rundown, hoping to take away the chance for a double play. Like Jomboy says, not sure there was a real chance to turn one, but interesting thought process from the runner.
That's what you're taught to do from middle school in that situation.
That's smart base running
They could have got a double play but the run would have scored. 2b throws to first to get Julio on the force. The first base runner by this point has turned and is running hard to get to second. Get him in a run down or on the tag. However the runner would have scored in this scenario, but in hindsight it would have been better for the angels.
@@zacharynyhusmoen Yeah, I think you're right. Too much speed with Julio to go to second first.
if the 2nd baseman had been able to pick up the dropped ball faster, a double play was definitely possible so i see where he’s coming from
Legend has it that this game is still going til this day
it seems like hard work being an Angels fan.
This content is so good it's worth watching more than once, more than twice!
I was thinking the same thing, It's a lot to think about in a nonroutine play, but you got to think more than one step ahead.
@@AegisRick its a routine play, run the guy back to the base he cam from. when he commits throw him out, if you dont get him then at least he didnt advance, pickle 101
yeah if Stassi had taken an extra step or two on the rundown, the 1B would’ve easily gotten home in time
Did you watch the Santana pitch sequence? He walked on only three balls!!!!!!! Check it out again. No argument from the Angels' dugout.
Catcher should have held on to the ball longer and run him further to 3rd. But the 3rd baseman also should have stayed at the bag instead of running in towards the runner. Weird circumstance for sure, but bad execution.
This video is so great it doesn’t even include the part where Santana got walked on only three balls
Nevin and the Angels fell asleep and didn't protest home plate ump's blown call on Santana. Ump got duped by Santana and changed count from 2-2 to 3-1. Many commentators have stated this already but it is an important part of this inning that is a total Angel train wreck.
These videos really make me miss late night baseball while in the winter 😔
Baseball is the best.
This play here basically sums up the Angels season in a nutshell.
This was the first baseball game I've been to since watching jomboy, and when i saw this happen i got so excited that there might be a breakdown of a game I went to
Every time I see an angels headline I think if Tungsten Arm O’Doyle.
thanks Jomboy it's like therapy this channel
GOMS! It took me a while after the game to figure out why Rojas goes back to third base instead of home to throw out Haggerty… There’s nobody covering home 😂! I figured he just made a colossal error and somebody called for him to throw back to third. Lmao what an inning, may never see anything like that again.
I was watching this live and hoping you'd do a breakdown on it. There was a lot of funny fan reactions and you got them all.
Angels on the way to 8 straight seasons of missing the playoffs and wasting 2 generational players
Beautiful. The energy in the pub here on the Eastside when this happened was ecstatic. 5min of shock followed by several rounds of pure excitement. And then to do basically the same thing the next night? Fucking amazing!
As a reds fan, I'm glad to see winkers having fun.
Half our damn team are former Reds lol
New things I learned from this game, and series.
1) FARTSLAM. Fielder Allows Runner To Score Like A Moron. The basis of this entire video.
2) Surrender Cobra. As seen here 4:18
3) Tungsten Arm. The now legendary tweet in regards to Angels continually losing despite having Trout (when he's not injured) and Ohtani doing incredible things.
As a bonus, I also learned about:
4) NOBLETIGER. No Outs, Bases Loaded, Ending with Team Incapable of Getting Easy Run.
Now I see why the Angels are so bad despite having the 2 best players in MLB. Thanks for the in depth explanation!
Sincerely,
A guy who really only keeps track of baseball through Jomboy and Fuzzy videos
I feel like NCAA Team + Ohtani and Trout would be a decent team compared to this
Best line I’ve ever heard “here’s what happened” I may have used it before I heard it on this video but every time I hear it I remember the times I used it untangle that one
Still waiting for a breakdown of the extra innings game vs the Yankees
Watched this in contrast to the cardinals double plays against the Mets and the cubs last season. Really shows the difference between the good teams vs the bad
The center fielder coming in to cover second base (on the first play) was the only heads up defense that I saw. As a Pirates fan I am used to bad baseball IQ.
sorry we must have watched a different video, he was WAY late in coming in to help defend...he should have been there well before that, the entire outfield and 1st baseman receive an F for their effort on that rundown play.
@@jamesw71 outfielders getting involved in rundowns is not standard operating procedure, although I agree that the entire team gets an F.
By far the best breakdowns in sports, how does jomboy not have 10 mill subs?? Looked like Jomboy was a high school coach breaking down film for his players😁 These guys get paid to do this smh
If I'm an Angels fan, there goes my last nerve, a breakdown. 😱
getting to watch jomboy explore video editing software effects is hilarious
This was just painful to watch. Shohei was his usual fantastic self, but he can't carry the team alone.
Catcher has to have more awareness of where everyone is b4 he throws to 3B if he runs him back 2 more steps everyone is in position and runner doesnt make 3rd run
What about where the ump walked the guy on 3 balls?
In college, I played first base and we got plays like this run-down between third and home every so often, like all teams do. One time, my brain just took a nap in the middle of it and I watched the whole thing standing there like an idiot. Never even occurred to me that I should break for home until it was all over. Awful feeling. At least in the Angels' case, it was somewhat understandable.
The body language by the Angels players is pathetic. None of them look like they want to be there. As soon as that runner stole third you can see it in the players that they knew the game was over. I think the higher ups in that organization are what’s wrong with the Angels. Sad to see.
That catcher, lol. He had a bad day. Should have slept at a holiday inn
You know your a faithful fan when you have been an angels fan for the last 14 years
I'm sorry for the sadness and anger you must feel. Maybe it's time to seek help for your Angels addiction. It's just not worth it brocicle.

Thanks so much for doing this, Jimmy! Always great to hear your perspective on things. :) I generally try not to laugh at other teams making mistakes in the middle of playing a game against them (karma and all that), but I legit could not stop busting a gut hearing this all go down over the radio. XD
wow, as an angels fan, I just watched the highlights for this game and said "ahhh just another day in the 2022 season" didn't know it was worthy of a Jomboy video. this makes me question my relationship with them.
(*shrugs*)
loyalty, what a thing.
angels season in a single play....a series of bad decisions + unfortunate events....
watching the fans react from the 3rd base cam makes this all so much better
Catch should’ve ran the runner ALL THE WAY BACK giving more time to cover home. Stassi shat the bed.
Excellant breakdown Jim! You ALMOST got me to think the Angels were more than a little league team xD I was almost there.
Let’s go M’s . So happy to see us having a good year been a long.. long time . Great stuff as always!
Jomboy “Let’s gooooo!” Is one of the best
