Slam Dunk has the most realistic ending where the team was unable to win the championship due to all the injuries. In manga it skipped that final match as the story was meant to tell that they lost the match. I think it has the best and unique ending of all sports manga as the story was told that they beat the strongest opponent but did not win the championship which basically happens all the time in real life.

Doesn't that feel so unsatisfying? No one reaches their goals by the end & there is no real conclusion to anyone's character. Sakuragi hurt his back, Akagi didn't get his college scholarship, ect.
If the moral of the story was "life just sucks sometimes" then this ending was perfect, but it doesn't feel like that was supposed to be the point of this whole manga
& Thank u for this comment! Your take on the ending is interesting mate

@@TheBeesSteeze Then you should rewatch the ending. Yes, they didn't win the championship but it has always been an impossible task to begin with since Shohoku was always seen as underdog. The whole point of the story was that this group of teenagers had grown from a bunch of kids that do not cooperate to a stage where they are all willing to give their best and sacrifice. Life is not perfect, but they had done their best and lived every moment during the match. They have also exceeded expectations and beaten the strongest opponent in the league. They already left their names in the history and there was no regret in their youth.
This is what the writer was trying to portray. There is always imperfection in everyone's youth but you should have no regret as long as you have tried your best whether at the end you have succeeded or not.

@@TheBeesSteeze Hello, I don't know if I'm late, but I just finished the manga, and personally, I really liked the ending. I think many people didn't understand the ending of the manga, which is valid since we are often used to the protagonist always winning. However, in this case, it was different. I consider that the main message is not to give up. If you observe, this message has been conveyed throughout the series and doesn't only apply to the end. For example, Mitsui's story with Ansai Sensei and basketball, Akagi's desire to reach the nationals despite never passing the first round, and many other examples with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Ryota, and other teams. This message, that even though things are difficult and you don't achieve your goal, you should never give up, is also evident in the end of the manga. Sakuragi, for example, despite being injured, is giving everything to recover and is very motivated to play basketball again and improve. The same with Akagi; even though he didn't get his scholarship, he is still trying hard to get into that university and play basketball. The same thing happens with Mitsui, Ryota, Rukawa, although they did not win, each one is striving to achieve new goals. This means that you should not give up. If you can no longer achieve the original goal, take pride in having given your all, and seek new goals to achieve and improve. Moreover, the fact that they won the match against Shonna shows that they were the strongest team in those nationals. Even so, I agree that in the end, I would have liked to see even a little more of the characters, but I think that was the message the author sought to give with that ending and along the series.

@@JoJomt46all I feel like is that the ending was a super vague thing I’m fine with a sad ending but atleast show them losing or anything else instead of a quick well they lost met game anyway goodbye that’s just sour ending it there with dozens of questions left tons of characters that were introduced that led absolutely nowhere bunch of rivalries left I think the author honestly just got tired and couldn’t think of anything else then decided to just end it

A lot of it can be boiled down to you wanting a happier ending or to see more. I don't think the Kainan rematch could top the Sannoh game personally. So for me I can't call it horrible or need to see it go on for 100 volumes. It's a valid thing to want but outside wishing Akagi got that scholarship I'm fine with the ending we got. We see Rukawa is training to go to America, I think its safe to assume he'll not end up like Yazawa he is going to play in the winter games and stick with Shohoku, he might train in America for a summer but thats it. Have you read the 10 days after chapter Inoue did? It kind of feels like a bit of a proper epilogue. I like the ending of Slam Dunk I will just say I wish we saw a bit more. I don't even mind the open ended stuff it just feels like it ends TOO abruptly after the final game. 2-3 whole chapters for the ending might have been better. Definitely read 10 days after if you haven't It might give you a tiny bit more of what you wanted.

Thanks for the video, I was wondering whether or not to read the manga, but after the problems you laid out with the ending I decide not to read it.
I have read Vagabond, another popular manga by the same author and didn't like the ending there. The problems I had with it are actually quite similar to the ones you talk about here. It's as if there were so many unfulfilled goals, the Vagabond manga hasn't officially ended, but you can tell the direction of the story stagnates and refuses to accomplish what was promised.
Some people here talk about having to understand the ending or that it's about reality, but manga's aren't about reality, it's about exceptional stories.
The artwork in both series is amazing, but the author seems to go for anticlimactic endings, which is unfortunate and leaves the reader with a bad taste in their mouth.

I loved the hell outta this anime. I finished it in just a week and a half, and now I just finished the movie (which was also incredible). I was open to reading the manga, but after doing research and seeing some spoilers- I feel very disappointed/dissatisfied. Don’t get me wrong, as a realist I enjoy how this anime felt more realistic to the other sports anime I’ve seen. But damn. They really just gotta hit you with Sakuragi being injured at the end?? Seriously?? And I believe Gorilla dude losing his scholarship or something? I mean they already lost man why they gonna add more salt to the wound 😔
Well anyways I’m still considering reading the manga actually, cause I really loved the character build up and their designs + personality. But shit dude, nothing hurts more than seeing the characters I’ve grown to love + learn more about face something threatening, that to me is just unnecessary.

The high five is the single greatest page in manga history. The chills I got just looking at it happens everytime

There are some parts of the story which are loose ends (like with the side characters). But I think there are answers to some of these questions if you read the epilogue. Even if there weren't it's open so you can have head canon. There could have been more but I don't think the ending was insufficient. Playing against kainan again in a serious setting isn't a very realistic expectation unless the series was as long as one piece or something.

The only reason I think it ended abruptly is Meihou and Morishige, I think that there was some intention to introducing those strong opponents. It didnt go anywhere.

i thought that too but now i see it as "although we dont get to keep watching shohoku play, there are still other fearsome opponents that will stand in their way"

I agree there should have been a epilogue on what happen with hikoichi , where akagi wemt to college, if Rokawa went to America and did hanamichi finally get a girlfriend but losing the championship is fine because it happens

I didn't like the ending when I first finished it a long time ago. Maybe you try to read it 10 years from now after you first finished the manga, maybe you like the ending.. This ending makes Slam Dunk still fun to read even if you've read this series many times..

I agree I thought the ending was trash and so rushed and was honestly surprised that its considered a hot take to think that like? It introduces so many plot details and characters and then abruptly ends and wipes away all of those threads and people justify it by saying "well its realistic that they'd lose". Them losing isnt the issue...I'm fine with them losing, but you dont just set up all these things just to ignore them. Not to spoil another prominent sports manga, but it ends in a way where the main characters lose, but it still resolves the plot lines that it set up later.

This is also my issue with the manga. I mean if I'm honest to myself, the ending was great! It honestly portrays the reality of life and it is also poetic. Like for example, Sakuragi hates basketball in every ounce of his being, but fell in love with it at the end of the final arc.
My only main concern is that Mr.Inoue introduces a new character purposely to built up an upcoming rivalry for the interhigh tournament only to set them aside in the end. It sucks but atleast he compensates by making the Shohoku vs Sannoh a one hell of a match. I'm a bit content by it.
