    I seriously hope Slam Dunk comes back to make the world fall in love with basket ball again. As a girl with no interest in sports I can confirm that Slam Dunk does more for basketball than what Yuri on Ice does for ice/figure skating. Highly recommend it to literally anyone. Thanks for the video, I can listen to people talk about Slam Dunk all day xD

    Something I really love about this series was how Inoue's art evolved over time. It was never bad, but some of the spreads in that final match were some of the best I've seen in manga history, and this art carried over to Vagabond.

    There are so many things unanswered up until now on why Slamdunk Manga ended abruptly.
    Regardless, we can thank Slamdunk and Inoue for reinventing Sports Manga, introducing new ideas and inspiring others to introduce other sports into the manga/anime genre.
    Also, for indirectly giving us Haikyuu.
    Like the first three seasons of Haikyuu has some similar resemblances in story progressions to Slamdunk's whole story.
    Even some of the rivalries and winnings of teams in Haikyuu have some similar story setups from Slamdunk.

At its core, SD is ultimately about friendship, self-improvement, and redemption. That's why I love Haykyuu as well-and I agree-SD and Haykyuu are head and shoulders above any other sports manga.

    Man, you know how impactful SLAM DUNK is? It influenced players like Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe who are now NBA players. And right now there is a college phenom name Kesei Tominaga who was also influenced by the manga/anime. And Japan right now ranks number 26 as of this post. For the first time they rank number 1 in Asia (cuz I don't consider Australia and New Zealand part of Asia). If ite weren't for Inoue's manga, I don't know if we'd ever have these great players from Japan. They may have ended up playing baseball or football instead if ite weren't for this amazing Manga Series.

  • @nomenbeb5747
    @nomenbeb5747 3 роки тому +9

    Well actually the most impactful sports manga has been Ashita no Joe, Slam Dunk was really impactful but because many people started practicing Basketball thanks to it, however Ashita no Joe impacted politics and large student protests, it has been a symbol for Japanse people in the 70's.
    Other than that really good video!

      @user-un-known 2 роки тому +8

      You're missing the part of how Slam Dunk single handedly created both the standard and new genre of sports manga. The so called "realistic sport manga".
      Prior to Slam Dunk pretty much all the sports manga had super powers as integral part of it. Dodge Danpei, Kyojin no Hoshi, Captain Tsubasa, Captain and Dokaben just to name influential ones.
      70s were wild even without Ashita no Joe. Coming out of student riots of 60s and having peak activity of domestic terrorism. Like blowing up shopping centers. So if anything I'd say Ashita no Joe was born because 70s were what they were.

    Ik it's last year's vid and you prob already grown much now. As someone who watched the anime in 90s and re-reading the manga now, I just have few criticism for this vid.
    First of all, this is a good video and I highly appreciate your effort. I see you really wanted to hype up this thing that this generation has no idea about. Yet you're trapped in using generic words such as "invokes strong emotion" and "not goodie two-shoes". So I want to add a bit to what makes slam dunk is unique, even compared to modern masterpieces like haikyuu and kuroko.
    This series made you wanna dedicate time doing real life basketball. That's the thing. I know you said you don't care about basketball like you don't care about volleyball.
    Like, I get it, haikyuu makes you curious about volleyball, yuri prob makes you research about figure skating, and so on. But unless you have done it yourself before, they don't make you want to try the sport beyond 'looks fun, i wanna try' and stops when you don't find yourself to be talented immediately.
    Sure, every sports protag shows deep passion and talent to the game, but what made Sakuragi uniquely effective was how outspoken yet restricted he was. People without prior knowledge of the series would probably be shocked on how long it took until he actually played proper basketball and even then his understanding was very gradual progress. In retrospect, it's amazing how long inuoe kept people interested with how very gradual Sakuragi's contribution to his team actually is. While yes, in comic-time Sakuragi's progress is in months, there's this sense that makes the readers feel "even if I don't make quick progress with my basketball, that's ok" because how long real-reading-time it took and focus on how frustrated Sakuragi was all the time--feelings that you no doubt will find when you join a sport regardless how good/bad you are. There's a huge sense of living in the present too, sure "we'll go to interhigh" is present as well as in any sports manga but the most prominent feeling is all the effort would be worth it even for "just this one game" "just this one score". There's a lot that I won't fit in youtube comment but one last thing I want to add is about the in-comic commentary. One of annoying trope of sports manga is too much technical stuff being commented by other characters watching from audience seat but while slam dunk has that too, it's not overly technical when coming from them. Most technical commentary is done from characters from the bench--coaches and the team's vice president and manager. So there's a lot of weight to most of them. That being said, all those enthusiastinc non-teams characters are fun too.

It's a good argument that ES21 had both better art and considering it was about American football and lasted for over 300 chapters, it's a strong contender for the true successor for the flagship jump sports series until Haikyu launched after it ended.
