    The events of Spartan Ops take place six months after the end of Halo 4's campaign. Infinity returns to Requiem, where the Covenant-led by Jul 'Mdama, who styles himself as "the Didact's Hand"-and Prometheans are still active.Sarah Palmer, commander of the Spartan-IVs, deploys Spartan squads to Requiem's interior. Crimson Squad recovers a mysterious artifact being excavated by Covenant; Infinity scientist Doctor Glassman disappears after studying the device.
    Catherine Halsey is brought to Infinity due to her knowledge of Forerunner technology.She is kept under guard by marines and Spartans including Gabriel Thorne, who lost his family during the Didact's attack on New Phoenix. While studying the artifact, Halsey begins receiving messages on her computer from an anonymous sender. The source of the transmissions is revealed to be 'Mdama, who captures Glassman and forces him to work on a Forerunner device that supposedly contains the Librarian. Pursuing 'Mdama's troops, Crimson Squad recovers another artifact.
    When Halsey examines the device, it displays images Thorne recognizes as depicting New Phoenix. Lasky reveals to Halsey and the Spartans that the UNSC knows Prometheans are former humans. Approaching the artifact looking for answers, Thorne is teleported to Requiem and captured by Covenant. Palmer arrests Halsey for communicating with 'Mdama. Thorne escapes captivity outside 'Mdama's base, and escapes with Glassman; they are rescued by Majestic Squad.
    Halsey uses an override code to force Infinity's AI, Roland, to assist her. Seeking information withheld from her concerning the Librarian, Halsey learns that Master Chief is alive. Halsey contacts M'dama to try and strike a deal, as they both want to find the Librarian; Roland breaks free of Halsey's control and summons guards to apprehend Halsey. Lasky decides to place Halsey in cryogenic sleep to prevent further trouble, but Promethean forces invade Infinity, capture Halsey and teleport her to 'Mdama's base. Serin Osman, head of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), orders Lasky to kill Halsey, however he is reluctant to do it. Palmer sets off to Requiem to execute Halsey; Lasky sends a message to Majestic Squad to intervene and rescue Halsey from 'Mdama.
    Halsey steps into the Forerunner device and makes contact with the Librarian. Librarian gives Halsey the two pieces of the "Janus Key", an instrument that provides the real-time location for every piece of Forerunner technology in the galaxy; Librarian instructs Halsey to use the key to advance humankind. Upon receiving the key, Halsey exits the device and 'Mdama steals one piece of it from her. Halsey passes the second piece to Thorne as Majestic Squad and Palmer arrive. Palmer wounds Halsey just before a Promethean teleports 'Mdama and Halsey from the base.

    Dr. Glassman is easily one of the coolest normals in all of Halo. He’s not military, he’s a just a civilian engineer forced to pull triple duty as Infinity’s Chief of Engineering, Head Researcher, and the only guy who’s actually able to even remotely counter Halsey’s forerunner knowledge bullshit with his own.

      +Masamune1993 According to the lore Sangheili medical treatment is sub par in comparison to humans, do to their long history with the covenant in which they usually served primarily military roles and let the Prophets handle science, technology, and to a degree medicine. They also believe blood is sacred and tied to ones essence and honor, so being wounded is heavily looked down upon amongst their culture and leads to ritualistic suicide. Also cus of this reason they don't like doctors, cus they see medical treatment such as surgery as spilling another's blood without honor.
      In halsey's case they needed her alive, and since Sangheili customs don't apply to her, Jul simply says, "fuck it, off with the arm." Id imagine an energy sword would be extremely efficient at amputation do to it being able to cauterize the wound while simultaneously cutting.

If circulation is not restored promptly the limb may become gangrenous. A field-expedient amputation might have been appropriate, and is certainly realistic.

      livster493 Halo 4 had a decent story, don’t know why they had to kill cortana. I personally hated the backstory of the forerunners, they were suppose to be ancient and mysterious. They “ reveal” everything that made them special and bringing the Didact back after 100,000 years was the dumbest thing ever.
      I feel the story should had been the rise of a faction of the covenant with forerunners technology, obviously the covenant was split and weakened but having forerunners tech would put them as a higher threat ( the banish are perfect) this rogue covenant and Jul was handle poorly, barely got any respect and Spartans IV are unnecessary and just takes away the special factor for spartans in general.
      Halo 5 fuck everything even worse with cortana coming back as a villain, Jul getting killed in 5 mins and prometheans got a lot worse, hate those disappearing humanoids , they are even more annoying then those jumping jackals from halo reach.

    Everyone's complaining about the SPARTAN-IVs being non-spartany, but that was intentional. Spartan IIs were raised from childhood to be war machines, and Spartan IIIs were exclusively selected from people who already showed extreme ruthlessness and efficiency. S4 was a strictly volunteer program, from people who didn't suffer from severe personality disorders. When ONI was designing Spartan IVs they brought this into question, hence why the guy interrogating Halsey at the very beginning of Halo one asked if she thought it was important that Spartans were sociopaths.
    This isn't a mistake, 343 planned it out pretty well.

    I like Spartan IV's, not all of them but Thorn is an almost perfect example of a Spartan. Also spartan II's went through years of psychological trauma which is why they don't talk much. There is meant to be a deliberate, and obvious difference between II's, III's & IV's

    • @tristanbackup2536
      @tristanbackup2536 6 років тому +15

      I know. People who don't understand the deep lore expect the Spartan IVs to be like the IIs. How can a individual who had a normal life, became a soldier in the war against the Covenant suddenly become perfect ruthless killing machine after. It doesn't work physiologically like that.

    • @hectorsantiago7953
      @hectorsantiago7953 5 років тому +1

      You say 'trauma', but it's more like 'conditioning'. There's a good reason they are called by the moniker 'Spartans' since their upbringing is a very sci-fi enhanced version of ancient Spartans. The first thing that happened at a spartan child's birth was a once-over to see if they would be fit to be trained as a Spartan warrior. Those who didn't pass were discarded. Many call this inhumane, cruel, etc., but the results were undeniable. Their culture was different, and we judge it now based on our own culture and beliefs. Halsey's dilemna was that she was "too smart", wondering with all her intellect whether or not the ends justified the means. If saving humanity was worth the sacrifice and suffering of a few hundred children; if the Spartan program or the MJOLNIR program didn't exist, would humanity have survived unscathed from the civil war it was embroiled in, let alone the Covenant invasion? If she would have done nothing humanity might've perished. The few hundred children she abducted, conditioned, genetically altered, and sent off to fight would've all ceremoniously died. But her doing something meant bestowing humanity a fighting chance at the expense of a few hundred children. And while you might argue she did what she had to do because the Covenant threat warranted it, remember that the Spartan program was created to quell human rebellion. The Covenant was not even close to being in the picture at that time. You could say that the Spartans were made to kill humans, and just happened to be good at fighting the Covenant as well.

    • @LouSassol69er
      @LouSassol69er 5 років тому

      Yeah they gotta tighten up that program. A lot of the IVs behave like kids rather than special forces soldiers.

    The worst part about all this though is the fact they tried Halsey as a war criminal. Sure, let's make one of the brightest minds in the human race the fall guy! All the people ONI could have blamed and they blame her. The universe is still massive and with forerunner technology now being the treasure out there, humanity needs every last bit of intelligence trying to decipher them before the Covenant Remnant decides to finish off the job they started.

      not to mention in the kilo -5 trilogy , the unsc found engineers from onxy that were untouched by covenant and direct decedents of the ones the forerunners. they brought them to Infinity to put in forerunner tech into the ship, halsey only stayed around as long as she did was because she thought and told everyone she was irreplaceable. thats changed shortly after they started to breed the engineers for unsc use.

      but thats not the point when making a movie. compiling all the cutscenes. sure they can make a movie, the real life series looked like a darn good movie. but as i told you making a movie is much more expensive than what you think. not only actors, but director, writters, producer, staff, music mixing sound tech guy, songs that you need to license, camera men, cable guys, lightning designer, clothing, editors, vfx guys, locations, sets, and a ton of things i might be leaving out. all that cost a LOT of money, because they not only need money to pay for what they need to make the movie they also need to earn money for their work. and at the end you realized you invested tens of millions of dolars. If so, then you might be a little disappointed to learn that what became Buck's spot in Fireteam Osiris was originally meant to be filled by Thorne. There's even a piece of H5 concept art you can look up that shows Thorne was originally supposed to be the fourth member of Osiris, not Buck. Unfortunately, because of scheduling conflicts going on at the time, Ethan Peck (who portrayed Thorne in Spartan Ops) didn't have the time to voice/motion capture his part in H5 when early production started. Thus, Thorne was swapped out for another character. It just so happened that Nathan Fillion was free and willing to come back as Buck at the time.
      The concept art: www.halopedia.org/images/f/f3/H5GC-TimLongo%26Osiris.png
      There's also a piece of artwork featured as the cover of The Art of Halo 5: Guardians that still shows him as part of Fireteam Osiris: www.halopedia.org/images/9/9e/H5GC-ArtCover.jpg

    Anyone else think that Spartan Thorne should have taken Master Chief's place. He had peaked Halsey as a Spartan and as a person. He was more human than any Spartan could ever hope to be.
    Thorne didn't have sociopathic tendencies or exhibit any extreme violence towards the enemy or fellow team members. Headhunters is a prime example with discussion of, "bully rather than be bullied." To inflict pain on someone or something else as a means to preserve your position in life. Even with Noble Team, Emile showing extreme signs of sociopathy when dealing with the civvy in the, "Winter Contingency" arguing with Jorge about, "forgetting what he is sometimes." Jorge exhibited notable human traits like Thorne. Compassion, anger, happiness, sadness the SPARTAN-IV program has garnered a missing trait in the program for some time, humanity.
    That was the whole point of Halo 4, showing how out of everything he accomplished, Master Chief was an unstable weapon that was now coming to terms with emotional scaring and PTSD. He should have been retired and evaluated, instead Halo 5's writing team decided he needs to be a fridge like he was in Halo CE.
    So here is to hope that Thorne will be the new vanguard of humanity. Honing the skill and battle prowess of Master Chief, while retaining all of his humanity like Jorge did. The imperfect warrior.

To have the spartan program you need halsey there, you need to be six years of age and you need to be wearing 700 pounds of armour like spartan 3's and 4's. I can see some true spartan 4's like thorne, he's really starting to show some spirit. Palmer is just shoot first ask questions later. I have always loved Dr. Halsey as a character, but you have to admit that she is no saint - her experiments with the original Spartans go against every moral code in the scientific community. She KIDNAPPED children, brainwashed them, and EXPERIMENTED ON THEM. Plus, those experiments were very likely extremely painful - altering genetics is no walk in the park. She also REPLACED the children with clones who were destined to get sick and die - just imagine those poor parents! It also works in her favor because with a clone in their place, the Spartan children had nowhere else to go - they had no choice but to stay with ONI. There are war criminals today who have been charged for less. But no one can argue with the end result: the Spartans are the greatest soldiers humanity has ever seen. Neither is she a devil, however. I think she eventually grew to care for the Spartans that she raised. She may not show much emotion, but she mourned the Spartans who died in the War of the Covenant, and she is protective of the Spartans who survived it.

    Spartan II's were the best the UNSC ever put out. Taking on the mantle of the term "Spartan" because they've trained and studied military tactics and combat since childhood (regardless if they were forced to or not). In the novel "Halo: Fall of Reach," it tells the timeline of their start as soldiers all the way up until the beginning of Halo: Combat Evolved, giving statistics of their capabilities. Before the MJOLNIR armaments were finalized, John-117 and his squad were tested by CPO Mendez in their teamwork and CQC combat skills by putting them against a Heavy Mech armed with two miniguns and a single missile launcher while John and his team were unarmored and unarmed (no weapons, combat boots, pants and a shirt). In seconds, the team destroyed the heavy mech without injury or losses. In addition, in game cutscenes of the Master Chief don't accurately depict his combat capabilities as written in the book, and it is stated that the newer serum used for the Spartan IV's is not nearly as effective as the augmentation done for the Spartan II's by Doctor Halsey, but ONI wasn't as strict on the details for the Spartan program, so they kept them both as "equal." The closest depiction to the actual physical capacity of the Spartan II's is in the short clip "Halo Legends: The Package," where MCPO John-117 leads his squad on a rescue mission for Halsy. In addition, it is also stated that the Spartan II's and III's out performed the Spartan IV's in total mission success rate per death count. People would argue that the Spartan II's are no longer relevant or significant compared to the Spartan IV's because "the Master Chief is the only one left." This is not true, in fact almost 1/4 of the Spartans that bore the armor and maintained combat effectiveness originally are left, just not mentioned in the game. In the video "the Surviving Spartans," there's quite a list of Spartan II's remaining in service, however their statuses are unknown due to lack of significance to the novels and game. Overall the Spartan II's were the most effective in terms of mission success, the Spartan III's coming in second in terms of success. The Spartan IV's just aren't as combat effective as the other series of Spartans due to inferior training and biological enhancement. They may be past ODST's and other special forces soldiers, but they'll never receive the training, enhancements, and discipline the II's and III's did.

    Dr. Halsey stated/made two things very clear:
    1.) She is driven by a thirst for knowledge. To know everything there is to know. Researching Forerunner tech would be a necessary step in achieving that.
    and, through her actions, 2.) she is very skilled at the art of deception. i.e. Roland override, communicating with Jul 'Mdama/withholding information from the UNSC.
    I think she is playing Jul by saying she wants revenge. Also, she didn't make clear who she wants revenge against, although it is obviously implied against the UNSC/ONI/humanity.
    I think the relationship between Master Chief and Catherine Halsey will be the main focus of Halo 5: Guardians. At some point in the story, Halsey will have both parts of the Janus Key and perhaps use it to locate a Forerunner technology that could resurrect Cortana?
    Agent Locke might be an antagonist in the sense that he has orders to locate and assassinate Halsey. The Arbiter will make a return, but he'll be sided with Agent Locke because he won't have all the information on the situation at hand.
    So, basically it'll be Agent Locke/Arbiter/ONI vs Master Chief/Spartan IIs/Catherine Halsey vs the current enemies. With a return of the Flood toward the end.
    What do you guys think?

    • @joelbrown5683
      @joelbrown5683 9 років тому

      In the Halo 2 Anniversary epilogue Locke and Arbiter talk about chief and Arbiter says chief would have his reasons for leaving and Locke says thats what he wants to find out. So I think it will be more along the lines of Halsey/Chief/Arbiter vs ONI vs Jul's Covenant, with Locke switching between ONI and chiefs side. My predictions is Halsey will die and become Johns new AI (effectively Cortana as she is a clone of Halsey)

They were supposed to be a more cost effective Spartan, but had a higher casualty rate. As for Chief vs Majestic, it's really anyone's game. Master Chief is a battle-hardened soldier who knows nothing but war, trained at a very young age to be nothing other than a what he is. Fire-team Majestic on the other hand, became Spartans as fully grown adults. The GenIV Spartans didn't undergo the same level of military training as the GenII Spartans. In a straight up fair fight I'd give it to Majestic, but in a real fight I'd give it to the Chief because he knows he wouldn't win in a fair fight, he'd fall back and resort to guerrilla warfare, and pick them off one at a time.

    Honestly I’ve always though the hate IVs and Osiris get is overblown.
    More to the point on IVs, making them more human is probably an improvement. When you consider the original idea about how forerunners were humans, you see how the Spartan II and IIIs were humans becoming more forerunner. To the point where forerunner monitors even considered them to BE forerunner.
    But is that a good thing? Forerunners in their arrogance destroyed the galaxy. Forerunners socially engineered a brave new world society for themselves by genetically determining their lots in life. Forerunners, like Spartans, were almost anti social, never laughed or cried, never had emotion. Human or not the Forerunners had lost their humanity.
    The IVs embody this hopeful ideal that HUMANITY can attain forerunner status without losing our more innate qualities. That includes our flaws but it also includes something more important and spiritual which when lost is impossible to find and in the case of the forerunners, dooms an entire Galaxy to a cold, lifeless fate after prolonged violence

    I have to admit, one thing's that I still scratch my head about when I watch any Halo cutscene is this notion that "Master Chief" is the title of one particular person ever in history, and will always mean that, even when he dies (which they thought happened after Halo 3). I don't know if the makers of Halo have forgotten (or ever really knew), but Master Chief is actually a rank in the Navy. When one Master Chief retires, another person is boarded to replace the rank of Master Chief (of which there is always only one per tenure).
    I feel like 343 makes this mistake even more than Bungie, which is noticeable by their characters apply the stress in the first syllable in "Master Chief", as if it's his name - which I don't ever notice in Bungie Halo, in which they almost always apply the stress to the "Chief" because they know Chief is the primary nomenclature of his rank.
    I'm probably just being weird dude 😂😅 just ignore me lol

      I met more than 1 Master Chief in my naval career. While a tough rank to achieve you can have more than 1 per command.

    Man for an un augmented human and a Naval officer at that, Lasky sure kicks ass with the best of them.
    Man straight up jumped up in that Knight's face and gave it a good old whack with the butt of his shotgun.
    I think he missed his calling in life. He'd have made a great Marine/ODST.

    I don't know about anyone else, but I'd like to see the Spirit of Fire crew return in like Halo 6 or something.

      There Spartan IVs, not Spartan IIs like the Chief. They're younger, and run by Oni and not Halsey. So they're more like Spec-Ops/private militia than the Spartan IIs and IIIs that were on Reach.

      godofcrap42 But still, how they act is not even normal for a regular army person, atleast on deployment.

      DutchPool Like I said, they're not as disciplined as previous Spartans. That, added onto the extra privileges of being a Spartan AND the de-sensitisation to war and conflict brought on by the high-tech steroids that go into becoming a Spartan, they're not gonna act like your average infantry.
