We made a workbench that folds against the wall when not in use, and detaches to roll wherever you need it when it is deployed. Now we have workbench space where when we need it and can wheel it to where we need it. And it's made from super cheap 2x4s too!
Start with a 24"x48" piece of plywood and then cut the following from 2x4 boards or scraps:
Bench
2 x 43.5"
2 x 17"
1 x 39.5"
2 x 44"
Legs
4 x 31"
4 x 7"
2 x 16.5"
2 x 9 3/4"

So, I was wondering... What is your idea of a "small shop"? Because MY shop is 10x16! Actually, 9' 8" x 15' 6". It's brand new and I haven't begun to outfit it yet. Per usual, I'll be equipping it from the workbench, out. I'm thinking something like a 3x6? Maybe 3.5 x 7? 4x8 seems "a tad" large for my little space. Also, I intend to make my workbench a FlipTop, so as to be able to mount several larger bench top power tools, reducing the overall footprint. I'd LOVE to have a retractable bench, but that would be difficult, or impossible in a steel shed. I thought about going deep in ground with a couple of 4x4's as a mounting surface. Any suggestions???
What did it cost you to build it?
Finally something simple for a guy who has very little wood working experience. Thank you for doing this build without band saws and drill presses....tools that I do not own. I can build this and I will! I appreciate your no nonsense approach and straight-forward teaching style.
Glad you like it! Hope yours is as useful as we've found ours to be. I was just in the shop working and that workbench is still working great!
Spit my water out laughing at the pushing work bench around part 😂😂😂
I finally completed my bench! A few mistakes and lack of skill returned in a unique bench. I knocked out the power only twice (trying to use my Shopsmith). I have an electrician scheduled to fix me up. Also tried to take off my finger, so as hunters smear blood on their faces, I "christened" my bench with my own blood. The docking station is scheduled for next Saturday. Sitting down to type this up is the first time I've sat down all day. I'm happy-exhausted.
OUTSTANDING!!! You are going to love your mobile work bench! And we would love to see pictures of your interpretation!!!
The table is the definition of perfection. Thanks a lot for the tutorial/showcase!
You are welcome! Glad you like it. It's working well for us!
Fast and fun video with all necessary info. Cheap and easy build with minimum tools required. Job well done, thanks.
I'm so glad that I came across this video! I have been looking for a small extension table for my shop and I think the search is over. Fantastic foldable leg design!
Glad it was helpful! I'd never seen a fold-down table and it just seemed like an obvious solution. It works great and is my primary workbench now. You will love yours if you build one!
it feels like no time passes between each upload, and every video is satisfying
Thank you!
I am so glad I came across this. I have a heavy workbench hinged against a wall and this is just what I needed to make it even better. Thank you! AND such no nonsense tutorial. Brilliant, easy to follow and even entertaining. 👍👍👍
Thank you for your kind words and glad you liked this project! I tried to make it simple and fun, and I use this bench every time I am in the shop!
Just what my 12x16 shop needs! Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome! You'll be very happy with it because it folds up only when you need it.
Love this! My husband is going to try this one
Please do! It's super useful in the shop!
Great project 👍. Thank you for giving dimensions. I'm just a newbie woodworker, but I think you're cool 😎. And I think the projects on your channel are "Weird and Wonderful". Thank you for sharing.
Thanks 👍 Very glad you are enjoying our projects!!!
This is genius! Very very clever and well thought out. Well done
Thanks! I was using it today and it still works great. Very useful workbench.
Wonderful project! It is super simple to build up and very functional to use it for a small power tools like a miter saw 7 1/4, Variable scroll saw, little band saw and much more........ Thanks for sharing that with us. 👌👌👍👍👏👏
Thank you very much! It's pretty versatile and we use it for a lot of projects!
I've been looking for an idea like this for a long time. This one works great for my small place. I've seen so many of the kind that folds up onto the wall but this one is a great option. Great job
Glad you like it! Folding down just seemed like the right way to go because we wanted to keep access to the wall. Worked great and still does!
This is brilliant. I have no walls in my garage because it's a portrait studio, but I need a collapsible work bench that I can easily store and then move outside to work on. Thank you.
That is exactly why we built this one. It folds down out of the way when you don't need it and can either me a conventional work table or a mobile one. I was just out in the shop a few minutes ago and folded it down so that I could install a French cleat wall above it. We LOVE the three different modes this workbench gives us!
AWESOME! The use of the lower vertical space was the answer to my problem. This will get done over the weekend.
Excellent! You'll love it! Ours still works great and we are using the wall over it for hand tool storage. Thanks for the love!
Nice job! This is exactly the concept I’m going for with my work bench. Thanks for the great ideas!
Glad you like it! This has turning into one of our most useful work benches and you will love yours!
I really liked this design. So simple. Other wall-mounted, mobile benches take way too many parts. I too have access to lots of scraps, so mine will be "free" too. Just getting started, but making it a little longer to match the length of my Shopsmith. Thank you so much for sharing your work!
I was literally just out in the shop using this workbench. It is a great piece of the shop and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine! Happy building!!!
Simple, efficient, and highly useful.
Glad you liked it! I was using it today to build an Arduino clock frame and it still works great!
Clever idea. Easy to follow instructions. Great job. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! We love this little work bench!
This man has excellent taste in t-shirts. Plus awesome videos. My new favorite channel.
I see from your avatar that we think alike. Welcome!!!
I love it ,it can be a sewing table in one room, and a craft table in the other😀
Exactly! It goes where you need it!
The legs on my folding worktable which I use ALL the time failed. My shop is handicapped without it. I looked at several vids on folding workbenches and chose this design to model my new folding legs after. I had to make some mods to your design dimensions but I made it work for my tabletop. I am soooo pleased with the design and function of the folding legs. It is much heavier than with the spindly legs I had on it before; definitely more stable. I love it! Thanks for posting this. I highly recommend this to those considering sturdy folding legs.
Glad you liked it! It just made sense to us to fold the table down instead of up, because we want to use that upper wall for storage. And we had the same feeling about the legs. We wanted legs strong enough to handle us pounding on work with a sledge hammer. So far it's worked out pretty OK!
OMG really handy Workbench, this is My next project. Thanks for sharing.
Do it! You will absolutely love this bench!
well thats super fancy!
We feel that if you're going to build stuff in a wood shop, you should do it with style!
Great idea and very simple. Because of a bad back, I will be building 2 of these with different leg heights.
Great idea! Mod the design to meet your requirements. You'll love these work benches!
Very nice design. Thanks for sharing it with us!
My pleasure 😊
Hello from Russia! Thank you. Very useful project. Will make it for myself. Good luck with the channel!
Thank you very much! You will find yours very useful!
Thx! Ive got a work bench i built several years ago. Im going to break it down and convert it to a wall mount using your plans.
Sounds great! You will love having a bench like this. We use ours almost every day.
This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing it.
You are so welcome! We still use it multiple times a week!
I've made this but instead of using a gate latch which rattles when working on the bench when it is 'docked' I used 4 adjustable level clasps (like what you would get on a suitcase) that you can adjust the tension on so I can really hold the bench tightly against the wall. I may add some rubber in there too as though I cut down the rattle, there is still some play so I could do with dampening it a bit more.
I also cut handles into the top side of the bench (when it is folded and hanging against the wall) so i had the option of just undocking it from the wall and carrying it like a suitcase to where I needed it, great for taking it into the car or the house.
Love this design, the best one I have seen online. Great work!
That all sounds amazing! And we are humbled that you used this design. It's really worked great for us and we hope it does for you as well!
Love the bench. Love the humor. Keep up the amazing content!
Thanks! Will do! Very glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent! Exactly what I was looking for.
Glad I could help!
Just what I was looking for! Thank you sir!!!
Glad I could help! We still use ours every week!
perfect! exactly what i was looking for.
Glad you like it! We've gotten a lot of use out of this one because it is so versatile.
@@AtomicDairy it's the perfect size. I need a worktop and want a workbench but the fact this folds down and stows away is right up my alley.
It works great and is easy to operate
Fantastic! Glad you made one!
i like it! i have a similar bench and SWIIC complains about it being in the way, so i like the wall-mount idea! i think, tho, instead of that teeny latch, you could but a couple of magnets in the folding studs to hold that in orientation when the bench isn't there
We have exactly the same idea about the magnets. We have to remember the latch hook/unhook it, but magnets will simply work without us having to think about them. That is definitely a future upgrade.
Love the editing 👍🏻
Glad you like it! It was a lot of fun to make!
This a great idea on work benches. Thanks tony
Thanks! We still use it all the time and it's holding up great!
Amazing job!
Thank you! This is now our favorite bench!
Love this project. Although perhaps my favorite part is when you put on the Tux penguin Linux hat. Plan to make this this week.
Absolutely! And thanks for noticing! This automatically means you are super cool. Most people think it's a Disney hat of some sort...
Cool, I’m going to try this, I’ve got a small 10’x12’ shed this would be perfect 👍 Thanks
Go for it!
Nice video. Clever engineering and build. Very useful for a small workshop. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Thank you very much!
Funny and straight to the point. Thanks for the video and the idea!
Thank you. We were just out in the shop using this bench. It's still working great!
lots of good ideas, thanks
Glad you like them! We share what has worked for us and this work bench has been absolutely great!
Very nice!
Thank you! Glad you liked it! I was just in the shop using it to build a trade show display. Still works great!
This is definitely the best of all the folding workbenches I've seen so far. The only other thing I would try to figure out is a simple mechanism to keep the legs up when I am about to fold it away.
Many thanks! And we are thinking the same thing. Right now I just hold them up but a latch of some kind would made the whole thing easier to swing up and down. Maybe a removable pin through the front?
@@AtomicDairy yeah a Sprint would do it, and would definitely be in the same simplistic spirit as the rest of the bench.
But I wouldn't make the Sprint removable. I would have a stop at either end so that you can pull it out maximally and it releases the legs, then you just push it in to get it out of the way.
And if you have a stop on either end you can even have it spring loaded so that it automatically pulls back and locks the legs in place. :)
And then perhaps something that makes one leg section Hold the other one in place when you fold them up in the right order. Otherwise the Sprint would have to be unnecessarily long.
@@dyvel What is this item you call a Sprint? Not familiar with it.
Great idea!
Thanks! I was using it today and it's really great to have the option to roll it around the shop.
This is exactly the bench I want to make!
Would you happen to have a complete materials list to make the trip to the hardware store easier? Especially, sizes and quantities of screws and bolts.
Absolutely! I listed the materials in the video description. It should cover all you need!
Really nice 👍🏼
Thanks! We really enjoy this mobile work bench!
Wow. Amazing project Bro.
Thanks! We really like this bench. It is so much more useful than a fixed bench, and we can wheel it around the shop at will!
Very clever!
Thank you! It's a great bench and we have since added a linoleum top so we can use paint and glue on it. I was using it earlier today and it's still working great.
Thanks ! I made my own 👌
Excellent! Hope you like it as much as we like ours!
Great video this is something I was looking for. Most of the other ones are too big or too small and fragile. I like the size of this one probably won't use full sheet of plywood and the portability need a bench outside sometimes. Thanks again
Glad it was helpful!
Great bench and T-shirt
Why thank you! And we really like the bench, and the shirt! A lot of people don't recognize that shirt and think it's a US Navy shirt.
This is some punk instructions and I love it... perfect for the shop.
Glad you like our weirdness! And I hope you like the one you will build as much as we like ours!
Good job Sargent ima make one my own
You won't be sorry! We love ours!
that's good, i'm going to try it, thank you
Go for it! I hope yours works as well as ours did!
This guy has to be a dad.
Yep! Good call!
I like your ideas!
Glad you like them! We try to build stuff that works for us, and often end up with weird/awesome stuff like this!
Yes your cool!👍
Thanks!
Thanks!
No problem!
chamkuli man we liked your work
Glad you like it! And thanks for your kind words!
Top, tolle Idee 👍🤝🙋♂️
Hey great video!😍👍, this will be perfect for the new 2 car garage we are setting up as our shop. Thanks so much for sharing, new friends here!
Awesome! Thank you! You'll love it if you build one!
Nice job!
Thanks! I use that workbench several times a week and it's still holding up well!
I like it and I could use it in my small shop.
It's definitely a useful addition. We use ours pretty much every day in it's various forms.
thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
Good job!
Thanks! It's pretty useful and it was a fun video to make. I was pushing it around the shop yesterday thinking of ways I might improve it.
Your test 'roll' was too funny. I may have to build this.
Outstanding! It's a GREAT addition to our shop and you will enjoy yours....if you built it.....
I likebthr idea.
Hey great video and demonstration! This is exactly what I was looking to build so I did. However, my table is not very sturdy. I am a beginner and was hoping I could ask you for a few tips on how to fix it. The wood I used was used 2x4s so some of them had some different shapes. Thanks for the video I may have to try to make this table again!
Glad it was helpful! I had a bit of the same problem but was able to adjust the caster wheels to make it work. It is a tall bench though, so it can get shaky on uneven flooring.
Great video 👍☺️
Thank you 🤗 Glad you liked it!!!!
Nice job.. Like it 👍
Thank you! I was using this bench today and it still works great!
Love the table just made one just wish I had that disk sander went through a lot of sand paper getting those legs rounded off
That's awesome! Except for the lack of disk sander. Sorry. But you're going to love that work bench!
This is awesome! I watched several workbench videos and my thought is that most are too heavy, complicated, expensive and too big. These should be simple, fast, easy, light and cheap tools to make stuff; they are not supposed to be furniture to show off. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
video is really cool !!!
Glad you liked it!
6:20-6:35 serious style points and you earned a thumbs up. The dock is useful but why not just lean it against the wall with a strap. Either way... Love the simplicity and orange paint. Hopefully HD notices.
Why thank you! We enjoyed driving around town filming that part, and got a lot of weird stares while we did it! And the hinges are because it flips up to be a regular work bench, which is how we most-often use it. We only wheel it around if we need to move the work to another station or outside, like to paint or sand something large. Otherwise it's a normal workbench that is attached to the wall for stability.
I knew an athlete who was into French cleats. He won the Tour de France in those shoes.
Is there anything French cleats can't do?
Good!!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
nice!
Thanks! It's turned out to be a really useful bench both on and off the wall mount.
OMG and Bob Ross, Ok I am now a fan
It's important to remember the classics!
Awesome. Now just a place to slide the spreader, maybe in the front.
Agreed. I've almost cut it up a couple of times thinking it was scrap. Need to fix that.
I saw you at Dragoncon 2023 and I heard you mention about your tablesaw and have seen it in your videos. I haven't seen how you did the base for it. I was so impressed with your thought process and the way you made things work so much better. Do you have the video on how you did the tablesaw cart? Thank you for the videos, they are great!!!
Unfortunately we built the saw stand before we started doing videos. In fact, people asking about that and a few other projects is why we started making videos. Send me an email from the About page here on UA-cam and talk further. I can also send you pictures of it.
The woodworking almost takes 2nd to the creative COMEDY! A+ on being informative AS WELL AS entertaining!
Wow, thanks! We try to make it fun! Plus is was super funny to push that bench down the beach. I got a lot of off-camera comments!
Great cost effective design. Neat. Loving that belt sander method. Maybe someday I'll get around to building one of those fancy metal working ones... uh... yep... have to move forward with procrastination stations other projects here. :-|)
Agreed. We tend to pile up partial projects on our various work benches and have to clean stuff up to film!
Liking for the Enterprise T-shirt 😁
Thanks for noticing the original!
@@AtomicDairy Original and best! 😁
Thanks for the great video -- I've watched a couple dozen "foldaway workbench" vids now, and this is definitely the one from which I'm gonna steal the most ideas. 😅 Love the "This is a workbench, so we consider the top sacrificial" attitude, and especially the creative way to make room for legs that are longer than half the length of the bench. I did see you mention that it can get shaky on uneven flooring -- I'll be making at least one of mine even taller (back issues), so do you think that using two spreaders on the bottom, right up against the legs themselves, rather than just the one in the middle, would solve that? Thanks again.
Thanks for your kind words! Two spreaders may indeed make it more stable with longer lets. And adding a second one should be pretty simple. Good luck with your build!!!
I spy Rebel Legion, and Whataburger!
Yep! I've been Rebel Legion for a number of years and am an officer for my state, as well as an X-Wing pilot. I march with the other rebel pilots in the DragonCon parade every year! And Whataburger is always a good place to visit!
Exactly what I am looking for for my next project and also were you the guys that did the retracting parking ball target? If so, that’s a winner too (my wife especially loves it).
That was us! We like to make things that make our lives easier, and more fun!
Thanks for making this amazing video.
Do you think a gate latch would work instead? Where the latch bolts are on two ends of the table and when you push the table up against the wall, it simply 'latches'. And since the latch bolts are round, the whole bench can turn about them and hang. I hope I was able to explain my idea properly.
It should, we looked at all kinds of latches for the task and settled on what we used. But that doesn't mean other latches wouldn't do the job just as well. We used what was readily available to us, but we always say there are 100 different ways to do something right, choose the one that works for you!
The 'trip' you took the table on was hilarious. Did ya get a cold drink for you 2 while at that gas station?
No, but we did stop for dinner when we did the beach shot!
Simultaneously entertaining and a great design - just what I’ve been looking for.
Can you provide thoughts on the benchtop thickness? I have a piece of 12mm ply that would do the job but wonder if it might be a bit thin and I need to go to 19mm?
It depends on what you will be using your workbench for, but I would go for the 19mm so that your bench will be more versatile. A thicker top will be stronger and will be able to handle greater loads and hammer blows. And very glad you liked the video!
@@AtomicDairy thank you very much for the response.
Awesome idea. I really like it. I looked at your videos for Carty McCartface but did not find it. Do you have a build video on it?
Many thanks!!! We built a lot of our stuff before we started doing videos but you just made us decide to build an improve Carty McCartface! And we'll film that one when we build it. We have a lot of stuff planned for the rest of this year but we'll work the new cart build in this year!
If you use Pocket Screws: @ 3:18 - Make sure they are LESS than 2 1/2" long - more like 2" or 1 5/8" max.
I use 2 1/2" and when it came time to drill the holes for my caster rollers, the tips of the screws (~1/4") spanned right smack into the caster hole I was drilling.
I had to remove the screws, clip them down (~1/4") finish drilling my caster holes then reinsert the screw to see if there was anymore interference between the screw and castor hole.
Good points and we completely agree!
I'm diggin the bump cap PPE. I'm retired AF but I recognize the gear. I came in in 89 so I also recognize your No BS/Straight-Forward charisma. Salute to you, Sir. (Liked; Subscribed)
Appreciate that!
Planning on making one of ma own...
and then i hear...
We're cheap?
okay...
and we're lazy??????
I feel like im really lazy now....😐😐
Haha jk
Love ur work, it was plain and simple.
Keep it up!!❤️❤️
Well, we are cheap because spending less money means you can make more stuff. And we're lazy in that we hate to do things twice! Also, we love that you like our stuff!!!
Would really appreciate it it I e been stuck at the end for a week and I don’t have a garage or shop so this has been in our dining room lol wife really wants me to get it finished lol
Could really use some help or advice. Again I’m a beginner woodworker and I’ve built this workbench but I’m having trouble with something. At the very end of the build and can’t seem to find anyone to try to assist me in my troubles/issue. Is there any way that you could contact me & I could maybe explain what I’m having trouble with on this build. I know it’s something very simple that I’m prob just overlooking but it’s been a little over a week and still have this thing propped up in our dining room lol.. if u could contact me to possible assist I would appreciate it… do u have a email that I can contact you at?
That latch is called a Hasp.
