So, I was wondering... What is your idea of a "small shop"? Because MY shop is 10x16! Actually, 9' 8" x 15' 6". It's brand new and I haven't begun to outfit it yet. Per usual, I'll be equipping it from the workbench, out. I'm thinking something like a 3x6? Maybe 3.5 x 7? 4x8 seems "a tad" large for my little space. Also, I intend to make my workbench a FlipTop, so as to be able to mount several larger bench top power tools, reducing the overall footprint. I'd LOVE to have a retractable bench, but that would be difficult, or impossible in a steel shed. I thought about going deep in ground with a couple of 4x4's as a mounting surface. Any suggestions???
Finally something simple for a guy who has very little wood working experience. Thank you for doing this build without band saws and drill presses....tools that I do not own. I can build this and I will! I appreciate your no nonsense approach and straight-forward teaching style.
I really liked this design. So simple. Other wall-mounted, mobile benches take way too many parts. I too have access to lots of scraps, so mine will be "free" too. Just getting started, but making it a little longer to match the length of my Shopsmith. Thank you so much for sharing your work!
I was literally just out in the shop using this workbench. It is a great piece of the shop and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine! Happy building!!!
I've been looking for an idea like this for a long time. This one works great for my small place. I've seen so many of the kind that folds up onto the wall but this one is a great option. Great job
I am so glad I came across this. I have a heavy workbench hinged against a wall and this is just what I needed to make it even better. Thank you! AND such no nonsense tutorial. Brilliant, easy to follow and even entertaining. 👍👍👍
I'm so glad that I came across this video! I have been looking for a small extension table for my shop and I think the search is over. Fantastic foldable leg design!
Glad it was helpful! I'd never seen a fold-down table and it just seemed like an obvious solution. It works great and is my primary workbench now. You will love yours if you build one!
I've made this but instead of using a gate latch which rattles when working on the bench when it is 'docked' I used 4 adjustable level clasps (like what you would get on a suitcase) that you can adjust the tension on so I can really hold the bench tightly against the wall. I may add some rubber in there too as though I cut down the rattle, there is still some play so I could do with dampening it a bit more. I also cut handles into the top side of the bench (when it is folded and hanging against the wall) so i had the option of just undocking it from the wall and carrying it like a suitcase to where I needed it, great for taking it into the car or the house. Love this design, the best one I have seen online. Great work!
The legs on my folding worktable which I use ALL the time failed. My shop is handicapped without it. I looked at several vids on folding workbenches and chose this design to model my new folding legs after. I had to make some mods to your design dimensions but I made it work for my tabletop. I am soooo pleased with the design and function of the folding legs. It is much heavier than with the spindly legs I had on it before; definitely more stable. I love it! Thanks for posting this. I highly recommend this to those considering sturdy folding legs.
Glad you liked it! It just made sense to us to fold the table down instead of up, because we want to use that upper wall for storage. And we had the same feeling about the legs. We wanted legs strong enough to handle us pounding on work with a sledge hammer. So far it's worked out pretty OK!
Wonderful project! It is super simple to build up and very functional to use it for a small power tools like a miter saw 7 1/4, Variable scroll saw, little band saw and much more........ Thanks for sharing that with us. 👌👌👍👍👏👏
This is definitely the best of all the folding workbenches I've seen so far. The only other thing I would try to figure out is a simple mechanism to keep the legs up when I am about to fold it away.
Many thanks! And we are thinking the same thing. Right now I just hold them up but a latch of some kind would made the whole thing easier to swing up and down. Maybe a removable pin through the front?
@@AtomicDairy yeah a Sprint would do it, and would definitely be in the same simplistic spirit as the rest of the bench. But I wouldn't make the Sprint removable. I would have a stop at either end so that you can pull it out maximally and it releases the legs, then you just push it in to get it out of the way. And if you have a stop on either end you can even have it spring loaded so that it automatically pulls back and locks the legs in place. :) And then perhaps something that makes one leg section Hold the other one in place when you fold them up in the right order. Otherwise the Sprint would have to be unnecessarily long.
I finally completed my bench! A few mistakes and lack of skill returned in a unique bench. I knocked out the power only twice (trying to use my Shopsmith). I have an electrician scheduled to fix me up. Also tried to take off my finger, so as hunters smear blood on their faces, I "christened" my bench with my own blood. The docking station is scheduled for next Saturday. Sitting down to type this up is the first time I've sat down all day. I'm happy-exhausted.
Great project 👍. Thank you for giving dimensions. I'm just a newbie woodworker, but I think you're cool 😎. And I think the projects on your channel are "Weird and Wonderful". Thank you for sharing.
This is brilliant. I have no walls in my garage because it's a portrait studio, but I need a collapsible work bench that I can easily store and then move outside to work on. Thank you.
That is exactly why we built this one. It folds down out of the way when you don't need it and can either me a conventional work table or a mobile one. I was just out in the shop a few minutes ago and folded it down so that I could install a French cleat wall above it. We LOVE the three different modes this workbench gives us!

This is awesome! I watched several workbench videos and my thought is that most are too heavy, complicated, expensive and too big. These should be simple, fast, easy, light and cheap tools to make stuff; they are not supposed to be furniture to show off. Thanks.
i like it! i have a similar bench and SWIIC complains about it being in the way, so i like the wall-mount idea! i think, tho, instead of that teeny latch, you could but a couple of magnets in the folding studs to hold that in orientation when the bench isn't there
We have exactly the same idea about the magnets. We have to remember the latch hook/unhook it, but magnets will simply work without us having to think about them. That is definitely a future upgrade.
This is exactly the bench I want to make! Would you happen to have a complete materials list to make the trip to the hardware store easier? Especially, sizes and quantities of screws and bolts.
Note for anyone building this. If you note when he drills the holes for the bolts his holes are 1.76 inches from the bench top. Your hinges holes will also need to be 1.75 inches from the side 2x4. It's hard to see that in the video but he leaves a small gap. I built this and was going by visuals and didn't catch this small detail. Had to rebuild parts of the table after I realized this was the issue.
Very sorry about that. Sometimes I miss critical details and this was one of those times. I hope this didn't waste too many of your supplies, and hope that your build turned out great.
Great video this is something I was looking for. Most of the other ones are too big or too small and fragile. I like the size of this one probably won't use full sheet of plywood and the portability need a bench outside sometimes. Thanks again
I saw you at Dragoncon 2023 and I heard you mention about your tablesaw and have seen it in your videos. I haven't seen how you did the base for it. I was so impressed with your thought process and the way you made things work so much better. Do you have the video on how you did the tablesaw cart? Thank you for the videos, they are great!!!
Unfortunately we built the saw stand before we started doing videos. In fact, people asking about that and a few other projects is why we started making videos. Send me an email from the About page here on UA-cam and talk further. I can also send you pictures of it.
6:20-6:35 serious style points and you earned a thumbs up. The dock is useful but why not just lean it against the wall with a strap. Either way... Love the simplicity and orange paint. Hopefully HD notices.
Why thank you! We enjoyed driving around town filming that part, and got a lot of weird stares while we did it! And the hinges are because it flips up to be a regular work bench, which is how we most-often use it. We only wheel it around if we need to move the work to another station or outside, like to paint or sand something large. Otherwise it's a normal workbench that is attached to the wall for stability.
Thank you! It's a great bench and we have since added a linoleum top so we can use paint and glue on it. I was using it earlier today and it's still working great.
I did not build that originally but now it hooks onto two screws on the back. The lack of a support mount became apparent immediately after we finished building this and I can't believe I forgot to include a solution!
Hey great video and demonstration! This is exactly what I was looking to build so I did. However, my table is not very sturdy. I am a beginner and was hoping I could ask you for a few tips on how to fix it. The wood I used was used 2x4s so some of them had some different shapes. Thanks for the video I may have to try to make this table again!
Glad it was helpful! I had a bit of the same problem but was able to adjust the caster wheels to make it work. It is a tall bench though, so it can get shaky on uneven flooring.
If you use Pocket Screws: @ 3:18 - Make sure they are LESS than 2 1/2" long - more like 2" or 1 5/8" max. I use 2 1/2" and when it came time to drill the holes for my caster rollers, the tips of the screws (~1/4") spanned right smack into the caster hole I was drilling. I had to remove the screws, clip them down (~1/4") finish drilling my caster holes then reinsert the screw to see if there was anymore interference between the screw and castor hole.
Simultaneously entertaining and a great design - just what I’ve been looking for. Can you provide thoughts on the benchtop thickness? I have a piece of 12mm ply that would do the job but wonder if it might be a bit thin and I need to go to 19mm?
It depends on what you will be using your workbench for, but I would go for the 19mm so that your bench will be more versatile. A thicker top will be stronger and will be able to handle greater loads and hammer blows. And very glad you liked the video!
I did. It's a flip-top work bench with the router. We didn't video that one but did make videos for two other flip-tops we have in the shop. Check our Wood Shop and Tool Projects playlist and you'll see how we made them.
Do you think doing the same design in a 4x8 work bench would make sense or create more of a challenge because of weight? I would prefer to use the lower part of the wall versus folding upwards and using the upper portion. Your design would be ideal but concerned on the weight of it hinging downward. Any thoughts and feedback is appreciated. Thanks for sharing!
We looked at a larger bench and realized 4x8 wouldn't work because the hinges will have to be a little over four feet off the floor. That would make the workbench top 48"+ high when it's folded up. We think 36" depth is about as deep as you could go but width can be anything you want. Plus if your width is wider than the folded legs you won't have to nest them like we had to. I think 3x6 would be a usable size and could work very nicely. At that size weight shouldn't be a problem either.
Locking castors would work but we didn't feel they were necessary on this cart because we don't use it for work that moves/gets hit by hammers, etc. But our other rolling workstations definitely have locking wheels!
Thanks for the great video -- I've watched a couple dozen "foldaway workbench" vids now, and this is definitely the one from which I'm gonna steal the most ideas. 😅 Love the "This is a workbench, so we consider the top sacrificial" attitude, and especially the creative way to make room for legs that are longer than half the length of the bench. I did see you mention that it can get shaky on uneven flooring -- I'll be making at least one of mine even taller (back issues), so do you think that using two spreaders on the bottom, right up against the legs themselves, rather than just the one in the middle, would solve that? Thanks again.
Thanks for your kind words! Two spreaders may indeed make it more stable with longer lets. And adding a second one should be pretty simple. Good luck with your build!!!
Many thanks!!! We built a lot of our stuff before we started doing videos but you just made us decide to build an improve Carty McCartface! And we'll film that one when we build it. We have a lot of stuff planned for the rest of this year but we'll work the new cart build in this year!
@@AtomicDairy I was 3rd ID back in 76-79 when it was based in Wuerzburg, FRG. My unit was in Schweinfurt… Glad you’re a friend to the Rock of the Marne.
I normally do but for this one I did not. It locks to the wall if I need it to be steady, I use it for mostly light work so it doesn't move around much anyway, and I had four wheels in a drawer that needed to be used that weren't locking. So far it's been fine and I figure I can always upgrade the wheels if the need arises.
I am not a woodworker. I have made 2 tables now, and neither one I could ensure the 2×4 base that the top sits on is square. Not sure how to get it square? Any videos on how to do that?
Sorry, we haven't done anything like that. I suggest you try a Speed Square to make sure all connections are square when you build the frame. That is what worked for us, and Speed Squares are inexpensive to obtain.
Thanks for making this amazing video. Do you think a gate latch would work instead? Where the latch bolts are on two ends of the table and when you push the table up against the wall, it simply 'latches'. And since the latch bolts are round, the whole bench can turn about them and hang. I hope I was able to explain my idea properly.
It should, we looked at all kinds of latches for the task and settled on what we used. But that doesn't mean other latches wouldn't do the job just as well. We used what was readily available to us, but we always say there are 100 different ways to do something right, choose the one that works for you!
I have a 3 car garage billiard room/ gym. I have a tv mounted on wall and nothing under. I been thinking on what to put under. I think I have less than 50" of lengh space by less than 30" D. Want to make it into a mobile little bar.
@Atomic Dairy yea I been thinking about getting one of those gladiator tables with wheels or those tool boxes with wheels, or thoese foldable workbenches that are just attach to wall or maybe one like yours
Sorry, we're not sophisticated enough yet to create plans. That's a goal for us but we aren't in a position to do it just yet. But I do go over every measurement in the video.
We do one wood shop video per month to show you how me make the things that help us make other things. Join us! Subscribe to see more projects!

Good points and we completely agree!
Amazing job!
Thank you! This is now our favorite bench!
Good job!
Thanks! It's pretty useful and it was a fun video to make. I was pushing it around the shop yesterday thinking of ways I might improve it.
I likebthr idea.
@@AtomicDairy thank you very much for the response.
forgot to ask did you make the holder for belt sander
I did. It's a flip-top work bench with the router. We didn't video that one but did make videos for two other flip-tops we have in the shop. Check our Wood Shop and Tool Projects playlist and you'll see how we made them.
I like your ideas!
Glad you like them! We try to build stuff that works for us, and often end up with weird/awesome stuff like this!
OMG and Bob Ross, Ok I am now a fan
It's important to remember the classics!
Thanks ! I made my own 👌
Excellent! Hope you like it as much as we like ours!
Wow. Amazing project Bro.
Thanks! We really like this bench. It is so much more useful than a fixed bench, and we can wheel it around the shop at will!
chamkuli man we liked your work
Glad you like it! And thanks for your kind words!
@@AtomicDairy Thanks for the response. I'll reconsider and likely take your advice of doing 3x6 instead.
So how many 2x4 to make that legs and braces? That's really a nice work bench.
I think we ended up using three, but we keep a lot of scraps around so we might have inadvertently cheated a bit on that number.
how do you keep it from rolling when you are away from the wall? perhaps some locking castors?
Hey great video!😍👍, this will be perfect for the new 2 car garage we are setting up as our shop. Thanks so much for sharing, new friends here!
Awesome! Thank you! You'll love it if you build one!
Great idea!
Thanks! I was using it today and it's really great to have the option to roll it around the shop.
Spit my water out laughing at the pushing work bench around part 😂😂😂
I knew an athlete who was into French cleats. He won the Tour de France in those shoes.
Is there anything French cleats can't do?
Can we use hinges for legs instead of rounding ?
That could work just as well.
Awesome idea. I really like it. I looked at your videos for Carty McCartface but did not find it. Do you have a build video on it?
Many thanks!!! We built a lot of our stuff before we started doing videos but you just made us decide to build an improve Carty McCartface! And we'll film that one when we build it. We have a lot of stuff planned for the rest of this year but we'll work the new cart build in this year!
10:22 What’s up with the 3rd ID patch?
Thanks for noticing! I've worked with them before and have a lot of friends who are/were in that division.
@@AtomicDairy I was 3rd ID back in 76-79 when it was based in Wuerzburg, FRG. My unit was in Schweinfurt…
Glad you’re a friend to the Rock of the Marne.
Did you use locking casters on your work table?
That would be pretty awesome! A movable bar!
@Atomic Dairy yea I been thinking about getting one of those gladiator tables with wheels or those tool boxes with wheels, or thoese foldable workbenches that are just attach to wall or maybe one like yours
Great video 👍☺️
Thank you 🤗 Glad you liked it!!!!
Love the table just made one just wish I had that disk sander went through a lot of sand paper getting those legs rounded off
That's awesome! Except for the lack of disk sander. Sorry. But you're going to love that work bench!
Can someone clarify whether the bench is just being held up by the piano hinges when it's folded down?
It is. but the hinge is more than strong enough to hold the bench when folded.
That latch is called a Hasp.
This is what I am looking for but where are the plans? Do I have to become a patron to even view your site? Can I buy plans through Etsy?
Sorry, we're not sophisticated enough yet to create plans. That's a goal for us but we aren't in a position to do it just yet. But I do go over every measurement in the video.
