- For a friend who doesn't have the luxury of extra space, I needed to build a folding worktable. I couldn't find a suitable design online so I decided to start from scratch. This is what I came up with.

This is such a great idea and clever too ! Can you tell me, what is the footprint under the table where no moving parts would collide? I am asking this because I might build it if it allows me to make a hole in the top and use it as a versatile portable workbench (create drop down plates with sanders, jigsaws, routers, etc...)
One of the most creative and inventive channels out there. Always fantastic work my friend! 👍👍👍
Superb design - I've never seen anyone that is so creative and ingenious with pivots, mechanical linkages and hinge and simple locking mechanisms as you are. Thanks for posting.
Bought the plans, built the workbench, working on the workbench already. All great!
I did laminate two mdf sheets and used it for the top, for an even more solid work top, with a mitred trim around. All good.
(And thanks alot for the good designs and plans that is so much beter than what the "two by four from Walmart" community would peddle!)
Excellent work! Love your ideas
Awesome design and video.
Cool design bro! I love watching all of your unique plans and ideas!! 👍
Very good desighn !!!
Nice build.
Solid and functional.
Your work is always unique.
🏆Great plans! Thanks!
Brilliant design, perfect for my really small shop.
I have to say, I watch lots of content on UA-cam about woodworking, from renovations to epoxy tables, as a general site carpenter I just find it all interesting and feel that there is always an opportunity to learn something… but I watch your videos knowing that I will never personally use anything that I learn from them, they are so environment specific and based on the hobbyist world that they are not likely to include anything that I would ever benefit from, but I still watch them all because they are so impressive I can’t help myself. You a clearly do what you do for the love of it, and the things you design and build go above and beyond what us “tradesman” are capable of producing. How on earth you think up these designs and then make them into actual pieces that function properly is so impressive. Hats off to you mate. Sam
genius idea , so well executed
Another great tutorial & like many others have said your mechanical mind is fantastic. Great to see you again take care. 🇦🇺
Great stuff 😁👍.
Awesome work Jean! So functional and strong
Great plan. Really enjoyed everything. One thought I saw was basic caster wheel incorporated into the stable hinge, instead of screwed on to the bottom side. This would allow for narrow design possible larger wheel. The stable hinge is the pivot one and a simple Axle between the legs should allow for a cleaner esthetic.
What a great table. Thanks for sharing this.
Excellent design and mechanism.
I’m always impressed by your creative solutions to making a practical project even more user friendly.
One of your best boet!!!
nice, fantastic build as always, i would be tempted to add a few more wheels though so it could double up as a dolly.
That is genius
Fantastic design, Jean! Really well done! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I just bought the plans. Thanks!
Thanks for the support!
Beautiful and ingenious. Always looking for good ideas, and your channel has them! Cheers!
Nice work as usual. I am a fan of yours. Happy to see you work! Keep it up
Your designs are always amazing.
Question on your table saw. Your all in one bench, you had long out feed and little side to side. Now your current setup, a lot of right side space and no out feed unless you use another table. Wondering about the change and the pros/cons of both setups.
great work and amazing ideas
Onky recently found your channel and working my way back through your videos. Will you be doing a small workshop update, a walk around, and cover what you have kept and work works well, or you would like to updat/change!
Thanks for your content
I am such a fan....but where does all your dust go? Your workshop is so clean.. even near your sander😂
If you install dog-holes at the end you would also be able to install a stop and use it to pull your tool box, using the table as a cart.
Someone should add a timer to see how many times you 'clap' your hands after a step. Probably more than you've edited in, haha.
Great to see you seemingly pretty much recovered, you are on my A-list for bookmarks I check regularly. I think outside of being a handsome man (don't blush ;) , many of us enjoy your nice voice (and accent) too and keep a good volume when watching your smart projects. If you could dampen some of the highpitch tools a bit more, like the edgerouter (the sander and drill is not a problem) it would avoid needing to quickly reduce volume not to get that small pain for the ears. Wish you the all the best and good health down there in SA. 💪👏
*esta genial muy lindo trabajo saludos*
😎😎😎😎
great job /work to making this - just question - how light/heavy is this ? KG ?
my idea is to make this for my bakkie as I am a handyman and seldom get to work in a shop per se - on the road - Boer maak n plan LOL
I haven't weighed it but it is not super light weight. I had to sacrifice a bit to make it more sturdy. I am able to carry it quite comfortably though.
@@WoodshopJunkies so a small man like me (1.5m) should be able to load/unload it into the back of my bakkie (extended cab ) - behind my seat ?
I have always wanted to build a portable assembly/ outfeed table but could never find one that I didn't have issues or concerns about. As usual your engineering genius has done it again. Bravo!
Mucha explicación
Fantastic! Love how your mind works, video production and execution!!
One of your best projects so fare...
And people want to know why I'm so proud of Cape Town ingenuity, this is the man with a plan. Well done Jean. Keep up the good work
Great table, I'll be getting those plans. However, I will add two rubber knobs for when you turn it on its side, it lands on those.
I already bought the plans. I can't wait.
Frankly, that is genius. Well done!
Now that is genius. I'm definitely doing this the next off weekend.
Nou eers opgelet jy's ewehandig. Dit verduidelik baie.
cutting thousand years old tree for some billionaire to have coffee table. Really smart. And workers probably doesn't get enough to support they families. There is no hope for humanity....
I received my plans. Super clear and concise. The only things I will change is a round over bit rather than a chamfer and will have to play with the height to serve as an outfeed table for my portable saw table. Any suggestions? I don't see that a change in height will make any difference in the plan mechanism. Is there anything I should be aware of? I'm going to love this table.
I love your content good sir…. Well thought out and excellent explanation…. Cheers from northern Ontario Canada 👊✌️🤙👍😎🇨🇦
A great project I would love to tackle sometime.
What about using linear rails and a scissor jack mechanism to create a dhop jack/lift to assist wit lifting and lower projects.
Awesome as always. Could definitely use this in my shop. One thing I would do is to probably use a steel pipe in the top section that you use to pull it as a cart when closed. That way I could easily use that bar to hang the unit up off the ground on some hooks when storing. I don't think the aluminum would be too good long term in that instance.
At 18:30, if you put a strategically placed piece of aluminum tube you could use the clips to hold it closed too. Would save needing those latches and make for a cleaner overall design, I think
Woah woah woah! You snuck that little nut end cap thing in there! I’ve never seen one of them before. Where do you get them from?
Great video. I live in Swaziland. Where do you buy your timber.
This looks like just what I need! Any idea how much the finished table weighs?
Amazing man, a lot of creativity in a simple design, I like a lot watching your videos
We have a chair in the UK that uses that mechanism. It's called a Deck Chair.
A very cool idea, may have to get those plans
how did you make the sanding table on the wall
Love the design! I want to see this with an adjustable height top using some ideas from your previous projects.
That is what I am working around. It is perfectly designed as a work table but I need to adjust for the height of my portable saw table so that I can also use it as an outfeed table.
I used to have a table very similar to that. I based my mechanism on the "TV tray" tables that are very common in the US, but built the table at a larger size.
TV tray tables are generally about 24"x18", with a height around 26". I made mine 24"x48" with a finished height of 40.75"; the height match my standing workbench, which is a bit taller than most workbenches because I am 6'-3" tall.
The tops of the tray tables are usually 3/4" thick butcher block, with rounded over edges, and the legs are made from very thin stock, generally about 3/4"x1". I made the top of my work table from a 24x48 sheet of white melamine from the local home center, with iron-on edging applied to make the edges look nice. I used 2x3 construction lumber for the legs.
After I had the folding table for about two years I realized that I never folded it up - it was always deployed, always in use. So I replaced it with a non-folding table with the same tabletop size, on locking casters, with storage beneath. Later I added some 3/4" dog holes to the wheeled table, and still later I added some t-track for clamping and work holding.
This is a TV tray table like the one I used as an example to develop my design:

Nice and solid, really like how you designed that mechanism to operate positively and controlled. My workshop isn't very big so interested to see the upcoming workstation. I already bought plans for the full version of your tablesaw storage stand, now just need to find time to build it! 😄
How is its tortional stability. Does it rock or twist with side load
That's effing awesome!!
Why not just go and buy a workmate?
This design will be copied in 3, 2, 1….
Love your builds. And always look forward to the next. Keep up the amazing work.
Smashed it again... love this ❤
Super impressed with that. If I build one I will add clamping to it. Really good design.
Very nicely done. Great tips and well put together. Thanks for the video.
I absolutely love your videos sir!!! Your ideas are pure genious and amazing!!! Keep surprising us please!!!
Excellent build and a great idea
Nicely done sir, I always look forward to seeing what you come up with.
I really like this design… I think it would work amazingly well with my sewing machines!
smooth mechanism, if for wood work i would add some holes and dogs, maybe more grip on the legs too but dam thats one lucky friend
So well done I think your mate will be a happy customer thanks for sharing
As incredible as your woodworking is, I would also like to see how you come up with these ingenious ideas.
Such a clever system, so simple and versatile. As always a great video!
Awesome design as usual!
Complimenti
Very nice workbench.
Wow. Great project!
So awesome! Great work!
Excellent as always 👍
Good job Jean, good job...
Good to see you’re back. Hope you’re feeling better?
Great video as usual! ❤
Are you still looking for a riving knife for your saw?
Thanks, I am yes.
That's a great space saver idea I can't wait to see more amazing ideas and I really love watching it
Very nice design.
Very nice design!
Very nice 👍👍👍
This is the most compact design I've ever seen! Great job!
Very creative design! Reminds me of TV trays here in the US
Indeed, though they don't have the linkage between the 2 legs... it is also what came across my mind as soon as I saw how he started building it hehe.
looks great
Brilliant!
i love these kind of genius projects :)
Nice job.
Ingenious
love it 😍
Excellent
