    I’m a cosmetics chemist. The pH of any given product can drift over a shelf life. When formulating skin/hair products, every ingredient added needs to fit into that drift, which is +/-10% and that could be why the Redken product has a higher pH range. This is particularly important for preservatives and actives which have to fit into that drift range.

      Redken dried the crap out of my hair. Having said that, I appreciate our Queen 👸 Abby for doing all this research for us. I’m most certain that the reason Redken didn’t work out for me is because my hair needs protein for reparative reason. Redken does not have protein. Olaplex No6 -leave in works wonders However it did take a month to see results. I’m inpatient, if I spend lots of money my expectations are higher. Lol. Anyhow thank you Abby for all your homework. The pH of the scalp is naturally around 5.5. In order for the shampoo to remove sebum, the pH must be the same or higher (max 6 for dailyuse). Hair likes a lower pH of 4 - 2.5! Therefore, it is important that the shampoo has a pH around 5-6 and then we apply the conditioner with a lower pH along the length. If the shampoo has a pH of, for example pH 3-4, it will not wash the skin and will cause irritation.
    I don't know if I explained clearly in English 🙈 Greetings from Poland ♥ ️

    • @noemidrescher1154
      @noemidrescher1154 2 роки тому +20

      pH 6.5 and 7 will be good for better cleansing once in a while (then the masks and conditioners applied later will penetrate the hair more strongly). Alkaline pH opens the cuticle and allows nutrients to penetrate inside, which is probably why olaplex shampoo has a higher pH to make their patented ingredient work even better, because after shampooing, we always apply a conditioner with a lower pH and close the hair cuticle.

    • @noemidrescher1154
      @noemidrescher1154 2 роки тому +18

      The pH can be used in your hair care for amazing results! if you want to regenerate your hair (e.g. at a hairdresser), you need to clean your hair with an anionic detergent (e.g. SLS )-based shampoo at a pH of 6-7 to open the cuticle and clean the built-upz Then we apply the target regenerating ingredients (proteins, humectants) and finally we apply a product with a low pH, which closes the cuticle and allows the ingredients to remain in the hair longer.
      At the end of the haircare routine, we always use products with the addition of emollients - silicones, vegetable oils, fatty alcohols, ceramides and phospholipids. Apart from the acidic pH, emollients are crucial in smoothing and closing the hair cuticles. In Poland, we pay a lot of attention not only to the use of knowledge about pH, but also to the use of, for example, proteins in the right order and emollients immediately after them. We call it the „MOO method” - ang. WCC 😃 (abbreviation of the first letters of the words: washing, conditioner, conditioner), where first we clean the hair with SLS shampoo, then we use a protein product, wash it and apply an emollient product for a while.

    After a full bleach and turning blonde, my hairdresser used olaplex 1 & 2, so they recommended I use the shampoo, conditioner, mask and leave-in conditioner afterwards since it would help my hair the most. I don't think it is the best brand out there, but the bottles are huge and you only need such a tiny bit, so I still have SO much left even after half a year. I will definitely use it until it is done, but perhaps after I will try something else

I do have dry coarse hair so this seems to be perfect. I always had luscious beautiful virgin hair but as I aged and am now coloring grey for years, the texture changed dramatically. I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. My hair doesn't get greasy if I don't wash it, just more and more dry. Washing it and adding moisture through my conditioner gives it some life back. I’d love to hear about the scents of these items, even just a rough description, and maybe on a scale of 1-10 how intense the smell is or if it lingers. Lots of people are scent-sensitive, including myself, and it’s hard to buy certain things like hair care products online if you’re trying to stay out of stores or you just don’t have one local.

      So I have all 4 of these and I would say Olaplex is the only one that doesn’t linger (even with using the Olaplex leave in and oil). It is a super light fresh scent and the day after washing my hair, my hair doesn’t smell like it anymore (even sometimes the night of washing my hair - once it’s dry - i can’t really smell it anymore). The pureology one is the most fragranced, I even washed my hair with Olaplex a few days after using pureology and could still smell the pureology which I don’t mind because the pureology one smells amazing! It’s just super strong. Redken and Amika are both “normal” in the lingering factor. I can usually smell it the next day but it’s not very strong. I would go to Ulta or Sephora and smell them all - just to see if you even like the scent! That way you’re not wasting your money! 🙌 hope this helped!! I definitely feel like my hair is the softest and easiest to detangle with the Amika & Pureology ones!

    So I use the redken shampoo right now that you recommended before and I like to alternate every once in a while so I think I'm gonna try the pureology. I really like the redken shampoo though because I feel like I can go longer without having to use dry shampoo. My hair always feels so clean from using it too. I also use olaplex right now which has really saved my hair when I had to strip out red coloring out of it and it felt so thin and dry I cried. I literally thought all of my hair was going to fall out because of the breakage. I will never dye my hair red again or any color that has to be stripped out.

    Hi Abbey. I really love your vids and find your info to be truly helpful. I always look to see what your thoughts are on any hair/skin care products before I make the purchase. So this question doesn't exactly pertain to this vid, but I was wondering what your thoughts are on the latest talk about hyaluronic acid for hair. I'm seeing vids on Tiktok of people even applying hyaluronic acid face creams/oils to their hair, and they say it transformed their dry hair into silk. What are your thoughts on using the face creams/oils as a double for a hair treatment as well? Thank you so much for your reviews on everything

    I love a good ranking video with explanations! I've been using the Olaplex shampoo & conditioner for a long time (aside from some samples and a period of attempting to follow the cgm or at least a modified cgm). But I will probably switch to the amika the kure set when I'm out. I got a sample of them a sephora order and was shocked by how well my hair turned out even though I didn't have time that day to use a deep conditioner/treatment/mask. I know I can't go without the latter for long, but now maybe I'll get even better results! I've suspected for a bit that the olaplex shampoo wasn't doing much for me anymore, though I love the rest of the olaplex products I've tried (all but 0 and the new purple shampoo).

    Shampoos tend to have a higher ph to open up the hair and really cleanse it well and then you go in with a more acidic conditioner and seal everything in. Most of the time you will not find a super acidic shampoo. But if you want to check one out the fanola fiber fix shampoo is very acidic I think it’s a 3-4 ph that’s the most acidic set I’ve ever found

    I appreciate all the videos I've watched from you about these different products for those of us that have bleached for ages and my process of going with a lot of blond with dimension over 7 years from a level 4. I have waist length hair and I'm just to the point where Olaplex shampoo and condition are just not at all doing me any good AT ALL.
    I get dread like tangles and have reduced the amount of times I wash my hair (major chore) to every 5 to 6 days. I use dry shampoo in between on my scalp. I'm torn now on whether to go with one of the two Redkens or the Amika.... However, appreciate you research and thoughts on the product!!!! Hoping for a little bit of more health to my hair soon!

    I have never had a shampoo review be so accurate and helpful. I hust switched from Redken Acidic Bonding to Olaplex 4&5... and instantly noticed I was getting a more itchy scalp... it is due to the protein build up as you discussed! You have made me realise I need to value pH more for my particular hair... so thank you so much!!!

    I’m a cosmetologist. pH balanced = 7.5. So if the shampoo is pH = 6. And the conditioner pH = 4, neither are pH balanced. But, the lower the pH, the smoother you hair will feel, as a lower pH = more acidic and closes the hair’s cuticle so it feels smoother.

    • @NatalieJ22
      @NatalieJ22 Рік тому +4

      The scalp’s pH is around 5.5 and the hair is 3.5-4.5 so 7.5 is definitely not pH balanced. Going too much above our normal pH makes hair more porous and susceptible to damage so having products that are closer to neutral or even alkaline, that’s definitely not good for our hair.

    • @e4lvsops
      @e4lvsops Рік тому +1

      I think this implies pH balanced for the scalp, not the middle of the pH scale. Similarly, pH balance of the vagina is no where near pH of 7, at which a lot of opportunistic bad things proliferate. It’s closer to a pH of 4.

    Not a chemist, but a nursing major who just took chemistry and is taking physiology 😬 pH can vary by batch based on how acidic or basic it happens to turn out. This can vary based on ingredient sourcing, the amounts *slightly* changing in each batch, etc. The citric acid, obviously, is acidic, and I’m assuming that they most likely use a set amount of each ingredient and don’t adjust for each batch, meaning that although the ingredients are in the same amounts each time, the pH can vary because the amounts don’t account for small variations that naturally occur in each batch. pH can also change over time when it’s exposed to air and water.
    TL;DR: citric acid is the main ingredient used to make the pH acidic, and because each batch can vary in pH before the citric acid is added, and the amounts of each ingredient in the “recipe” never changes, the pH may not always be exactly the same. But that’s just my kind of educated guess

      since your hair gets dry from pureology but likes redken’s formula maybe look into if your hair needs more protein/moisture - redken doesn’t seem to have much protein (too much protein can make your hair feel dry, brittle, straw like) while pureology has protein

    Shampoos contain alkaline ingredients which act as the cleansers and raise the pH. They raise the cuticle and allows the cleaners to lift dirt from within. This is why your hair can feel rough and tangled before you put conditioner on. Shampoos can have PH levels as high as 10.
    Conditioners are more acidic (lower pH) and this closes the cuticle, locking in moisture & smoothing the hair.

    I currently love using the Olaplex duo about once a month paired with the No.3 treatment, especially when I am getting close to a haircut appt and need to keep it in tact to stop and current damage. If I use it too frequent I don’t like it as much. It makes my hair heavy. If my hair is extra dry I will use only the conditioner with my normal shampoo like you mentioned since it is THAT good. But for my normal routine shampoo and conditioner I personally love the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Moisturizing formula with Lavender and Mint. I have really thick, dry, wavy/curly hair with a drier scalp. I’ve tried so many other brands and continue to use this duo since it moisturizes my textured hair without being heavy, it’s smells amazing, and doesn’t get super greasy when I workout consistently throughout the week. Idk what the pH is but it seems to work perfectly with whatever the pH of the water I use is. I know when I lived in an area with hard water that changes my whole routine.

That is why your bottom two favorites had higher pH but also better lather. I don't recall the exact reason but I do know that you can't get as strong as a lather or foam from a cleanser that is a lower pH.

    In addition to what others said about causes of a pH range, I would suggest avoiding saying that something is "pH balanced" versus not. Many other ingredients can affect the pH, so while some companies may try to "pH balance", that may or may not mean that the product is the optimum pH for haircare. Overall, I really appreciate how you tackle scientific concepts despite not having a degree in a related field, and I'd say you can explain things better than some chemistry PhD students I know 😊💜

      I had the same issue with the Pureology and now think I know why: it has lavender in it which can be an irritant so this might be causing your issue.

      Unfortunately, all Pureology shampoos contain Cocamidoryl betaine. I am allergic to this ingredient, my scalp itches. I cannot use shampoos with this ingredient and many brands use it in their shampoos.🤥
