Lyrics below:
In the middle of the night, I may watch you go
There'll be no value in the strength of walls that I have grown
There'll be no comfort in the shade of the shadows thrown
But I'd be yours if you'd be mine
Stretch out my life and pick the seams out
Take what you like, but close my ears and eyes
Watch me stumble over and over
I have done wrong, you build your tower
But call me home and I will build a throne
And wash my eyes out never again
But love the one you hold
And I'll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the light
Skin too tight and eyes like marbles
You spin me high, so watch me as I glide
Before I tumble homeward, homeward
I know I tried, I was not stable
Flawed by pride, I miss my sanguine eyes
So hold my hands up, breathe in and breathe out
So love the one you hold
And I'll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the light
And in the middle of the night, I may watch you go
There'll be no value in the strength of walls that I have grown
There'll be no comfort in the shade of the shadows thrown
You may not trust the promises of the change I'll show
But I'd be yours if you'd be mine
So love the one you hold
And I will be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the light
So love the one you hold
And I will be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the light

i am convinced there is nothing idris elba cannot do
couldn't agree more
he can't be white
+Jonathan Manrique Villegas incorrect, he can bleach his skin.
Totally agree, he is magnificent.
Have you seen "Bastille day" , man he's got to be James bond!
Epic concert idea: Mumford and Sons, Lumineers, and Of Monsters and Men all in one show
My top three bands
Are you kidding me!!! That'd be so cool
Awh,now, why is that I love the "Of Monsters and Men" and not like "Mumford and sons"? Maybe it's just me not listening enough of their music.
While Idris Elba DJs. 🤣😍
I'd pay good money for this
Our beautiful daughter lost her life to cancer, she met you at Reading in August 2015, a wish granted to her. We are so grateful to you, love your music to the end of time. She is still listening to you. xxx
I wish you all the best... may her memory would last forever 🙏🍀🌻
✨🤍
Idris Elba blows my mind. This video makes me cry every time. The emotion he portrays without uttering a single word and the story he tells just hits me right in the feels!!
I've seen this video 100 times and I still cry everytime.
Is it not about t Mumford and sons and the song this though? No offence
He also directed the video!
'There is no greater lover of the light than the blind man.'
fun fact: The actor in the music video, Idris Elba, actually directed it as well.
Nice, doesn't he play Luther, as well.
+Silas Almgren yep...and Stringer Bell from The Wire.
+Dannyb016 that was fun.
+Dannyb016 Brilliant fact!
+Dannyb016 JAMES BOND!
There's an endless list of reasons to love Idris Elba, but for me it always comes down to this video. His acting just moves me to tears so deeply in a way rarely anything manages to do repeatedly every single time I watch it.
And on top of it the indescribably hauntingly melancholic and uplifting Mumford & Sons song, making this just an emotional masterpiece.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. I am typing this as i wipe my tears right now. This is true beauty.
Absolutely! watching this in 2021 for the first time blown away by it. An incredible metaphor for everybody having a hard time
Truly beautiful. Thankful for the powers that be.
@@phoenix_teardrops5588 I concur
I’m moved to tears also. But for a completely different reason. Terrible acting!
What I take away from this beautiful video and song is a powerful message of faith. Relating humans to the deer who is taken care of day after day living by faith with no ability to plan for the future. And Idris represents a human who decides to let go of control and live by faith running toward the light. I love all of the close calls and things that could have gone wrong but everything works out and he is free.
If you guys haven't found out yet. There is a syndrome where one loses their sight when it gets dark, like simply getting more blind than normal when it gets dark. So that explains why he was running after the sun. He didn't want to lose the light, because without it he will be blind. Also where we can asses that the light is also the presence of his loved ones, hence the name Lover of the light. This music video gives me chills and is on my fav 5 music videos. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as i do.. ;D
Thanks a lot for the info. The video makes more sense now :) Never heard about that syndrome before, do you know how is it called?
Google helped me xD, it's called nyctalopia
In reference to the video it's beautiful, but no illness is exotic
well said.
I see it as doubly meaningful - that ^ and he has already lost a loved one (talking to himself, setting two places at the breakfast table, etc..) ... he has already lost some of his sunshine, some of his sight.. he is running after 'her' (or him), fighting for the last ray of the daytime knowing that darkness follows - and then accepting it at the last minute that it might cause his destruction. Notice the smile after the 'fist at the sky' moment - he has hope - hope for tomorrow and the light that it brings.
Watching this video is like looking directly into the sun. Idris Elba is so damn beautiful.
I will forever believe that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

whoa this is beautiful! Mumford & Sons + Idris Elba = A+
Is it him? I couldn't tell for sure...:)
Yeees! I guess it's just unexpected to see him in a music video~
Bouquet of Flowers Pretty much so.:)
What an absurdly handsome man.
big idris elba
Nafoo 😋😝🍎
this song is so beautiful. and after finding out idris elba also directed the video it shows just how powerful both his performance is and the meaning behind it all. you really can feel every emotion without any dialogue and the song plays it so perfectly. i cant help but cry my eyes out everytime. the way it deals with loss is just so spot on in such a real and relatable way.
Good eye Sniper ❤️
Why does no one talk about how Awesome Idris Alba is in this video. He's so perfect for this. Thank you, Idris.
Idris Elba is amazing here.
Had this on in the car driving to the hospital in the middle of the night the night my mum passed away. My family were waiting at the hospital , drove from Leeds to Barnsley, I never got to say goodbye and never expected to lose her at 28, she was only 47, amazing song it somehow got me through that night. R.I.P. mum.
Im sorry dude. Have courage, try living normally and try to distract yourself :)
Mathew Nicholls so sorry, mate...
Head up lad
Mathew Nicholls So sorry Mathew...treat yourself gently.
@mathew Nicholls, I also lost my mom when I was 28 and she was only 49 and by the time I made it to her she was in a coma,I never got to say bye to her ...just know that I feel your pain . So sorry for your loss .
Who can take the excruciating, complex grieving process and not only not overact it but make it beautiful? Idris Elba is a gift like no other. This video is simultaneously haunting and heart-warming.
Idris can play a character with a wounded soul so well. I have loved this song for a very long time, but finally seeing the video and what Idris did with it ...visually, it made me tearful. Beautiful, emotional, happy, and sad all in the span of one music video. Masterful.
This is not merely a music video- This is a Masterpiece.
Yep
I will continue to share this video whenever I can. It’s like a 5 minute movie, that captures so many feelings and emotions; his acting along with these lyrics paints a narrative about humanity that needs to be seen! ❤
Yes. Replay #Oct2023
Where was this gorgeous work of art filmed?!
Mumford and Sons are to be added to the greatest musicians the world has ever known.
You have got to be kidding.
Brian Baker you sir have no taste in music
They are good, but among the "greatest musicians the world has ever known"? Please. True, they may be one of the better bands this generation has to offer, but in the early 70s they would have been considered average...
Brian Baker This isn't the early 70s, stop living in the past. Different generations, different views of society and the world as a whole, therefor our perception of the "arts" changes. People from the 1930s wouldn't have been so enthusiastic about music from the 70s as are people from the 70s about the 2010s, different strokes, friend
Neutro yeah but if your going to label something as the greatest band *of all time* you sort of have to take into consideration past music.
I've listened to this song from March 2020.. I was going to end my life and the pandemic was the perfect cover. But because of this song and others like it, I'm still alive July 2021.
There are just enough unexpected events to keep us looking forward to a few more.
Aye it's a belter! 👍
Which others?
I am so glad you are still with us, it makes me sad that so many people go through so much pain that they want to take their own life
Carrie, there can be hope and I trust you will find it. Proverbs 3:5-6
this felt like a love letter from God to me the first time i watched the video and heard the song. Not the kind that makes you smile fondly, but the kind that made me run to my room and sob so violently that my husband thought something was wrong. My husband had said to listen to this new song... My parents had divorced after almost four decades of marriage, i was pregnant and had just moved to a new town where we knew no one, and i was just filled with such aching sorrow. I couldn't hear God when i prayed, and when i opened my Bible, i didn't feel Him talking to me out of the pages. I was going to church out of obedience and rote, wanting to do the right thing, wanting to feel right in the world, but everything felt so wrong and broken. This song was so clearly telling me "keep walking toward what you know is good. Don't give up. Don't just sit down and cry. RUN toward what is good, and forget everything else"... It was what i needed to know that God saw me, He understood my broken heart, and He was still for me. He still had a good plan in all the mess.
My grandfather passed away while I was at his bedside yesterday. This song has gotten me through the past 24 hours. I lost count of how many times I pressed the replay button.
Edit: I won't let someone on my UA-cam account ever again. Use your own account.
God bless my friend, 4 years on I hope you are healing.
Listening to the song while I read your comment caused a lump in my throat
I hope you have been healing well. ❤️
Praying for you and do not give up
Idris is the man.
I love how the meaning of this song always changes for me. Sometimes its a love song other times its about finding happiness in whatever your life is. Just now listening i pictured it being someone coming back to God after a tragedy or loosing faith. So soothing for a broken spirit.
This is exactly why I love this song as well
Songs that are interpreted in different ways are always the best ones
I agree, it doesn't have to be about just one thing, this is true art.
I know exactly what you mean
Wow, no truer words have ever been spoken. Hit it on the head 👏👏👏👏
Idris Elba and Mumford and Sons is an explosive pairing! This is the most INTENSE video ever.
The man in the video is blind...
By his love and his loss and his physical sight...
But he knows where he has to go. He knows the way, even though he can't see it. Because his love and pain carried him there.
My mind is blown. This song is amazing.
Idris Elba & Mumford and Sons.....brilliant combo.
No Matter what mood you're in, Mumford & Sons will make it better. Whether you're going thru loss, heartbreak, stress, anxiety, fear, sadness, whatever, there is a power that comes thru their music and it overtakes you. It's unlike any other band i've listened to.
I feel the same way. I feel so lucky to be alive at this time so i could experience their music.
Get well soon Idris Elba, you've got to beat that virus
Yeah, I hope him back Healthy n see again in another movie.
yep i agree
I had deadlier shits than this virus
@@israeladesanya4596 me too
Chills everywhere, everytime
+sevenperks For some reason this song does send chills through your body. its amazing how powerful they managed to make the words feel.
1,000 people don't know what absolute perfection is
Neither do i.
But i love this fucking band and the song =)
7 years and only 4,000 more people disliked just goes to show how good this song is
I agree with the interpretation! He misses his wife so badly that it hurts beyond explanation. Love it!
This was the song we used at our wedding when I walked down the aisle; I came in during the breakdown / bridge toward the end. I believe this song was the most beautiful gift and God shared it over the radio to before my wedding as I was pondering what music to explore. I was literally standing in a dressing room when the song came on and I was just stunned.
he WAS blind and can now see (cf. Amazing Grace lyrics) but he isn't "there" yet, that's why he still relies so much on his hands and sense of touch in the video.
He's running for heaven with all his might.
+jackaray1 we came to the same conclusion :)
After loosing my son, I've starting listening to this group and all I have to say is that I'm so glad and blessed to have heard them. They have brought me to have peace within myself and so much to live for.
I am so sorry...love is forever, he is in unimaginable joy, and you will see him again someday.
These guys have lyrics that are eternally significant. ..They touch hearts in huge ways. Somebody writing has a lot of faith. They're awesome! My heart soars when I hear their music!
Bless you, have faith you will be together again one day🙏
Bless you xxx
And you know Elba is a great actor and this song is amazing when they actually manage to make "waking up in the morning" a beautiful thing.
Every single time I watch this I cry...it is just so beautiful.
same here
Fear, Loss, loneliness, perseverance, acceptance .... a wonderful visual depiction of emotions we all face. She was his world, he lost her. Now he must overcome a new darkness in her absence. Both literal and emotional.
IDRIS !!!!
Quarentine nearly 2 months. I'm comfortably home, healthy. Reminding myself of music I love.
to all who read this, and all who don't...sending you infinite peace, perfect health, joyous freedom, and unconditional love...💜💜💜💜
3:44 - 4:42 is why I started playing the banjo
Ah.. This is the best part of the song :D
Every one of their songs is the reason I started playing banjo
Roon Mc Brings me to tears every time...the banjo....the horns...the drum....LOVER OF THE LIGHT!
Roon Mc Do you have a vid on here of you playing it? I'd love to see it
Me too!
Oh my word...!! Crying and smiling at the same time... Absolutely beautiful music video!!!! We that can see have soooooo much more to be thankful for than we can ever imagine....!
I tooted
I have used this video as a lesson for my special education students to try to see the different emotions. What I see is a man who is blind and can only see and feel light as he finally escapes and takes a chance. The song and the video is a masterpiece
Could not agree more, you are so right!
When it gets dark inside your soul call out for the light and your calls will be answered.
Most beautiful music video ever
Amazing song & love Idris Elba; great actor & a beautiful man.
This video is ageless. First watched it 6yrs ago. Here I’m on it again. This is video really points that good music is language of the soul 😊.
Thanks M and sons
The right Song for my worst moment. Loving the Light. And keep on walking again. Sometimes we are blind and confused....but our soul knows where to go, running like no excuses left.
"Lover Of The Light"- Mumford & Sons
And in the middle of the night
I may watch you go
There'll be no value in the strength
Of walls that I have grown
There'll be no comfort in the shade
Of the shadows thrown
But I'd be yours if you'd be mine
Stretch out my life
And pick the seams out
Take what you like
But close my ears and eyes
Watch me stumble over and over
I had done wrong
You build your tower
But call me home
And I will build a throne
And wash my eyes out never again
But love the one you hold
And I'll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights
With skin too tight
And eyes like marbles
You spin me high
So watch me as I glide
Before I tumble homeward, homeward
I know I tried
I was not stable
And flawed by pride
I miss my sanguine eyes
So hold my hands up - breathe in and breathe out
So love the one you hold
And I'll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights
And in the middle of the night
I may watch you go
There'll be no value in the strength
Of walls that I have grown
There'll be no comfort in the shade
Of the shadows thrown
You may not trust the promises
Of the change I'll show
But I'd be yours if you'd be mine
So love the one you hold
And I'll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights
So love the one you hold
And I will be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights
Directed by - and starring - actor Idris Elba, the “Light” video tells the story of a blind man who literally leaves his disability at the door, ditching his cane and wandering out into the wide world. And though he’s sightless, he bravely dashes through a forest, sprints toward the edge of a cliff and lives his life unencumbered, for the first time. It is an incredibly powerful, moving thing, a clip meant to both inspire and empower … which is exactly what they were going for when they sat down with Elba to discuss the treatment. And even if the finished product has left some of their fans slightly bewildered, well, that’s perfectly fine with everyone involved.
Just. Wow.
I always thought this video was about a day in Stringer Bell's afterlife after Omar and Brother Mouzone lit him up.
Well said thank you for clearing up what most of the people here are not understanding!
You're welcome!
Thank you for that insightful summary!
This song is manna for the soul, inspiration for the heart and I appreciate this masterpiece so much, thank you ❤
I saw Mumford and sons and they were one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen! They played this and the entire arena was singing! These guys put on such a great show that I want to see them again! 🤟🏻🔥🔥🔥❤️
I will climb a very high mountain and play this on the Sunrise!
Sounds like a great plan!
+TheMorphrick Ohhhh play it in an old growth forest as the sun rises. That would be serene
So did you do it? If you haven't then you really should!. A reminder 😉
Give this man an oscar or something, just so that he knows he's an amazing actor and that he can be proud of his talent. Shit, so much talent makes me mad, Idris, dude if you're reading this, damn Idris, daaaaaaaaamn. Forget about an Oscar, they should give you a nobel prize. Your talent should have an instagram account so that I could follow it and like its pictures. Forget about James Bond, you should be the next pope.
+Maria Jose Mutis daaaaaayyyuuuummmm and here i thought i was his biggest fan ..... but i agree with you though lol
It is one of the "injustices" of Oscar. Like happened to Leonardo diCaprio. But I hope Idris will be honored in Oscar soon. He deserves.
He is the black Leonardo DiCaprio
Heard this song for the first time somewhere in my early 20’s. I’m in my mid 30’s now and I never forgot about it. I was briefly in college at the time and didn’t care much about what I was doing there other than to chase after women. I had quite a few at the time, but there was one I actually fell in love with who gave me hope to carry on with what was already a harsh life I lived. She’s long gone from my life now, as are all the others including the people i used to know. I’m not happy with life, but despite all the things I’ve been through since I still haven’t quite yet lost the will to give up
I am in awe of this song.
I don't know why but it makes me feel like I am the one who is actually blind.. there is something so vulnerable yet powerful about this.
You guys do everything right, literally zero bad songs.
It's because it was built in the purest love to ever touch this world.
ximoshu TRUE
I disagree but some of their songs are fucking great
I would've agreed with you before Wilder Mind came out.
what songs don't you like from wilder mind?
the acting on this one just deserves a Million Claps ! Breath taking
“You might not trust the promises of the change I’ll show” I love that music makes me feel things with simple words and sounds
I'm age 50 and love this band. Saw them in concert in Houston Texas. Awesome show!!!
I never thought I'd type these words... But that banjo rift!
+Will Bergger I believe the word you are looking for is "riff"
+wolf that's how great a riff by M&S is. it splits the very fabric of space/time. a rift is formed from whence pours Pure. Awesomeness.
Why is this video making me so emotional? *wipes tears and snot*
OrangeCries The song is emotional, so that could be part of it.
+OrangeCries i know right *sobs*
I also think, in foresight, it could be a love story.
+OrangeCries Idris in his pajamas, thats y....lord
Definetely a possible love story of the passed loved one or an emotional story of a blind man; (there were guesses on if the deer was a sign from the passed away loved on & the ideas that are sparked alongside the beautiful music is endless as it should be in it's simple perfection)
They have one of the most beautiful humans doing art. I actually cry each time this song comes up.
We walk by faith, not sight.
I walk with vision and clarity
With faith, we see.
this song is amazing and this video still gives me chills, it's so beautiful.
Idris si so beautiful...
Faith in the Divine Source, the true light within us, our true selves guiding us in the dark. Grace. Love.
To all of those blinded, whether by accident or birth, my heart sees for all of y'all, forever and a day.
Such an amazing performance by Idris Elba
came for idris elba, stayed for idris elba
Their songs always makes me want to hug and slow dance with someone.
I love this video for the same reason everyone loves this video and song. But I wanted to put it into words.
The blind man seeking the light is only a part of this, and it is a metaphor for finding the courage to go on. I see this, but it's only part of it. I also see a man who wakes up expecting to be next to his love, but he is alone. He serves breakfast for two people, taking his time to prepare it just like he always has. During breakfast he indulges in a memory with his loved one which then flips to the end as an emotional bridge.
Ultimately this is about love, and loss and the memories left behind. A part of life we must all shoulder, but go on.
And it's portrayed beautifully, as the man suffering is blind, but we are not blind to his suffering. He finds the courage to step outside to seek the warm light, which is an allegory for running for his lost love and moving on.
The animal shots also symbolise a connection to nature and life.
It's all there, and we all know and we simply feel it. This is what makes this video so powerful.
At the end the man hasn't forgotten how to love, he feels it just as strongly as the first time. And he will go on.
It's a celebration of life.
Big Driis should get an award man....emotional right now ....where the tissue at?
Filmed where I live. Beautiful Gower!
lucky you! it looks like a magical place to live :)
This beautiful beautiful man Irdis Elba ❣
The stag like symbolizes the struggle against the inner wilds of which we all must face if we are to ever truly see... That which is truly divine
You sure you don't want to talk to anyone
One of my all time favorite music videos. Can make a person very emotional trying to figure out what is going on with this man!
He is blind
2 years later i am replying! lol. I only saw this now. No DUH he is blind! there is MUCH more to this video than his blindness though. He is speaking to someone? Laid 2 plates at the table. So he has also lost someone.
the end almost brought tears to my eyes
ALMOST???
Perfection right here. This brought tears to my eyes. Damn onions...
I see this as a story about addiction. The symbolic moment when he reaches for the cane and decides not to use. This releases him on a journey which he finally ends when he reaches the light.
this video fucks me up every time. I cannot stop crying.
Shit man same
SAME!!!!!
Wow! What a performance!
Mumford and Sons makes me wanna travel around the world
I had a comic idea many years ago while listening to this song about an artist getting inspired by a flicker in a lamp candle and painting what's essentially the love of his life. Throughout the song the being came alive and pulled from the canvas to transform the lonely studio around him into an incredible realm of nature the likes of which he'd never experienced. It only lasted for him a few minutes before he passed out and awoke in the same room with the painting, but with newfound glowing passion in his heart.
And on the note of this video, I absolutely love the intimate level of detail that's captured on the textures of his skin, the eyes, everything, it's sublime.
Sometimes life is just strange... Yesterday i started watching the show "Luther". So i searched for the guy who's acting as Luther. I found Idris Elba. Never heard of him before (shame on me) - but i'm truly impressed of his acting skills. And today i wanted to listen to some Mumford & Sons... and WHO'S in the video? Idris Elba.... what a coincidence.
ceibhfionn1 I fuckin' love that show. Idris Elba is a boss too.
God I would kill for another season.
*Luther season 5 is in production ATM!*
Older series, but check out Ultraviolet if you can. Great supernatural story in which Idris (among others) stars.
Vaughan Starr Thank you!
*How much people realized that the man in this video is blind?*
I love how much though has been put behind this video. The symbolism between the deer and the man are amazing.
He isnt Blind , He Plays Blind ( Actors Name : Idris Elba )
Darkminer14 Noah I know he isn't actually really blind. In the video he is though. :/
Thought you Didnt know ;)
I adore this video although i have never watch it completely till recently, when i noticed he is blind, still love it .Elba's expression is great!
he is semi blind, he can see only shade of light, thats why he stop, and thats why he didnt crush in the trees, (claps i nthe backround , me taking a bow, thank you, thank you every one)
IMO, this gem is all about the man's grief over the death of his adored seeing eye dog.
He stepped out in faith and kept running until he could see completely. The stag "Jesus" was with him the whole journey.
MIND BLOWN!!! I like that
I see this as a man living with God. talking with Him and loving what He created like nature as the guy in the video feels every thing. some thing I do to appreciate the moment. and he feels happy when he steps into the light he feels the love God feels for him. really awesome.
You don't know how much you need Idris Elba making breakfast until you get to see Idris Elba making breakfast.
It took over 4 years for your words to reach my eyes, but man it was deffinatly worth it!! 😂😂😂
It doesn't matter who one is, what ethic group, gender, sexuality - and I'm a straight white man - Idris Elba is a very impressive man
It's also a reference to blind sight. To see that which can not be seen by man's eyes alone... To see beyond the veils both real and those just imagined
2020- Oh! This song still brings tears to my eyes and Idris Elba interpretation is amazing ♥ Great Band + Great Actor
He's quite a gift to the world... Idris Elba.
What I get when I watch this video. Obviously the man is blind. You see him dressing in a black suit which I think is for the funeral of his wife, he makes 2 breakfasts out of habit so that says shes recently passed away. He then changes his mind about going (his hand hovering on the white stick) & wants to kill himself to be with her. Hes planning on throwing himself off the cliff so hes running towards the light (song title) The deer you see is his wifes spirit looking after him, he is able to run a long way & through a forest without hurting himself, he actually stops in the forest & listens for the deer to guide him safely. As he gets to the edge you see the deer skidding to a stop and turn away just as the man does, his joy is him realising his wife will always be with him. I might be totally wrong but thats what I feel is the story behind this powerful & gorgeous song & video.
Yvonne Henderson I really like this interpretation, thanks!
Great
Ryan Heemann Aw, thanks for your comment. I was nervous writing that in case I got abuse & told how wrong I was :)
Mariepaula Brennan Thanks very much :)
Yvonne Henderson Love this!!
He makes a breakfast for two one for him and one for god who is always with him. He lets go of his cane what hes relied on and follows this voice within not his sight which is just a crutch we all use to get by in a world of uncertainty. Yet god is always certain.
