I did this trip in the 1980’s, but from Perth to Adelaide, via Esperance, Albany and Norseman. I took note of the distance 3400km. Virtually non stop. Part of it at night. Fuel and food stops approx every 250km. Pretty boring but worthwhile to complete a bucket list challenge. Hit by a sheep at midnight while still in WA, which took out the driver’s wing mirror. So glad to reach Port Augusta, knowing that Adelaide wasn’t too far to go. Some stunted trees both ends but virtually nothing in between. Lots of red dirt. Wouldn’t do it again but that was my Mt. Everest achievement. Cheers.
Hi, Glad you enjoyed it. I've done the trip a few times and you are right, there is not much to see. But I have family at both ends of the trip so I will be doing it several times more. Cheers.
Hi Dennis, Thanks for the positive feedback. We endeavour to make videos that will help others to have a happier less stressful holiday than we had. I hope our video does this for you.
Great video - explained everything I needed to know (especially fuel stops & accommodation options) to travel to Perth for my very first time. THANK YOU!!! 😊
Thanks for sharing your experience with great comments....yes I drove from Perth to Melbourne in 1991... great trip & no problems only stopping for fuel & take photos...at night stayed in motels (very cheap).... cheers 🦘🦘😃
Hi Mandie, I am very glad that our video has helped. I suppose that without the owners rescuing them the eagles may not be with us at all. I assume that the owners have the right authorisations. You will probably see some (in the distance) along the Eyre Highway. The best sighting we had was on the Barrier Highway between Peterborough and Broken Hill. They have large nests in trees/poles very close to the road. We saw one lifting a whole (road kill) kangaroo and dragging it off to the side of the road.
Informative and useful tips. Thanks. Do you think we can manage the road trip in a Mazda 3 or Corolla? After going from Perth to Adelaide, do we use the same road back home?
Hi @yesyesleung222, a Mazda 3 or Corolla in good condition should be fine. The road is mostly a flat easy drive. I would pick a time of year when the temperature will not be too hot. The car engine will get quite hot (but still safe) sitting on high speeds for long periods. If it is 40 degrees outside then that just puts undue stress on the engine. There are basically only 3 roads across Australia: The Victoria Highway across the top from Darwin; the Gunbarrel Highway across the middle which is really just a dirt track for over 1,000 kilometres and is only suitable for 4 wheel drives; and the Eyre Highway. So yes, you do use the same road back home. Hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip.
Omg thanks for your information. Had a road trip from Brisbane to Perth, went across the Nullarbor. Was wondering the Grid metal bar thingy on the road Is for? :) Cheers
Come East in 2005, there are changes now. l night we had to stop and sleep on the side of the road where there were bushes and a toilet only. They need more stop overs as you approach Norseman.
In some places like Mundrabilla we had no service at all. There is a tower at the top of Eucla pass which gives good service for some distance around there. I can’t remember which other places had good service and which didn’t. I guess the best idea is to assume that you will not have any connectivity along the way and to be organised to take advantage of it when you do.
Yes. A lot of the roadhouses have cabins. Just phone ahead. Be prepared for very basic accommodation at high prices. You are in the middle of nowhere with no infrastructure so they have to bear all the costs.
Hi @newsgetsold Yes there are kangaroos especially at sunrise and sunset. I don't drive at night but have had a close call with emus when driving at dusk. You will see animals on the side of the road that have been hit by cars. Because the road is straight and flat you can generally stick at a constant speed throughout the trip. I usually take 4 days to do the trip Perth to Adeliade and sometimes 3 days for the Adelaide to Perth trip (because of the time difference you gain time when going west). Other do it faster. Cheers
Hi @Ham2022-t, Most of the motels along the trip are pretty old although relatively well kept. Most of the larger towns have a selection to choose from. However the stops between Ceduna and Norseman offer only 1 choice so it usually ends up being wherever you get to that day. Balladonia is probably one of the better ones and Nullarbor Roadhouse has an interesting bar/restaurant, although it is usually quite crowed with truckies. Hope you enjoy your trip.
I've done this trip over 50 times and i must say that your vid brings back my desire at 74 to do it again . Well done
We're never too old. 74 is the new 54. I have got a lot more trips to do before I catch up to your 50 times.

This is the route I have planned, putting car on the train westbound, have a week in Perth then head out!
I went from Sydney to Perth with my parents when I was ten, in the early 80's, in a mini! It is a road trip I'll never forget.
It definitely is unforgetable. I have done it a few times now (have family in Adelaide and Perth and Sydney) and I still enjoy each trip.
Fantastic video, great work.
Many thanks!
this is probably the best video and explaining whats available and not

Mate and I drove across there in the Summer of 1962, what a ride...in an old Austin (?) model
Hi, Yeah I did the trip in 1964 with my parents. The road has changed since then, bypasses Ivy Tanks now. Cheers.

Thanks for sharing!
Very informative, I’m planning a solo trip next year and this has made me feel much more comfortable. Just a pity those eagles are caged.

Glad you liked it!
I have done it several times in the 70s before it was sealed 👍🏻👍🏻❤️
I did it once when it was not sealed with my parents. It is a much easier drive now.
Thank you.
You're welcome!

I have plans in hand to do this drive the reverse direction:Perth to Adelaide.
Enjoy the trip, I am sure you will

Yeah, more stopovers would be better. I have not stayed outside any of the villages...might do it one day!
Can you access internet or use phone data from ceduna to norseman?
In some places like Mundrabilla we had no service at all. There is a tower at the top of Eucla pass which gives good service for some distance around there. Great video. Would it possible to do Adelaide to Perth on that road , in a diesel 4WD, with no camping gear or caravan, just using motels or cabins ?
Yes. A lot of the roadhouses have cabins. Just phone ahead. Be prepared for very basic accommodation at high prices. You are in the middle of nowhere with no infrastructure so they have to bear all the costs.
Thanks to @PortiasPics4680 for the reply
Are there lots of Kangaroos to avoid on the roads? Is it safe to drive at night? How many days is reasonable for this trip?
Hi @newsgetsold Yes there are kangaroos especially at sunrise and sunset. I don't drive at night but have had a close call with emus when driving at dusk. What’s the best motel stops from Adelaide to Perth
