      @@bikerc100 I've just opened my Y540 to check what memory is originally shipped with. I've unplugged it, checked it is CL19 8GB (so decided to buy 2x16GB CL15). All this without disconnecting battery as it was not mentioned in the video and I just forgot to think about it. But nothing bad happened in my case. Probably when I'll be putting my new RAM I will not disconnect battery as well since it is dealing with small delicate plugs. UPDATE: Done. Nothing bad happened but I was careful :-)

    Thanks for the vid, I successfully added 8GB RAM - my first time doing something like this.
    It wasn't as easy as it looks on the video tho, getting the cover off was a real struggle, and installing the RAM got me anxious because I think my holding pin was a little more bent than it should be but I managed to pop it in in the end.

    I see in the description you now have a live to either 2x16gb Ram sticks or 1 x 16gb ram stick for a total of 24GB. I just wanted to check if running the stock 8gb ram stick and a new 16gb ram stick like the one listed would cause any issues in my Y540? You mentioned for dual channel you needed to have the same capacity and speed?

      Sorry for replying a year later, but in case you still need it: it's recommended that you remove/unplug the battery before performing any services to your laptop. Also, upgrading the RAM should not void the warranty, as long as you don't damage your laptop during the upgrade.

    I just upgraded my y540 with a second 8gb ram and a Samsung evo plus 500gb ssd. The laptop is now extremely noisy. Much noisier than before the upgrade. Is this going to harm the laptop? Is there a way to make the fans
    a little quieter?

    • @BartechTV
      @BartechTV  5 років тому +2

      Hi, it shouldn't be any louder than before. Just adding more RAM and another SSD should be creating that much extra heat. I only really notice the fans kicking in when playing games or editing 4K video, otherside they aren't even audible. It won't harm the laptop, as it would shut down before any heat related damage occurs. You could try turning off the Intelligent Cooling option under Power settings in the Lenovo Vantage application.

      BarTech TV thank you for the reply and the video really helped me btw. So thanks again. One other thing was that on the original there was a soft blue strip on the existing ssd. The original was shorter and was attached to a metal plate and on that metal plate was this blue strip. I carefully took it off and put it on top of the new ssd - minus the metal plate. Is this something I should have done or should I just discard the blue strip?

    • @BartechTV

      You can pair the existing 8GB RAM with à 16MB module for a total of 24GB or a 32GB module for a total of 40GB but the RAM will run in single channel mode instead of dual channel, since dual channel mode requires two modules of the same capacityl. If you really need more than 16GB it would be best to sell the 8GB that shipped in the computer and buy a pair of 16GB modules. That would give you the best performance.

      24 GB (8 + 16) will work fine but both RAM modules will run in single channel mode. To get the RAM to run in dual channel mode they'd need to be the same capacity. The performance difference will probably not even be perceptible, as its mostly integrated GPU's that benefit the most from dual channel RAM.

      Not really for gaming. You wouldn't notice much, if any, improvement. For things like 4K video editing it may be worth it.

    I have 8
    Can I add another 16 so i can have 24 in total and will this effect gaming performance in a good or bad way (by using different size of sticks)

    • @BartechTV
      @BartechTV  3 роки тому

      You can add an extra 16 to get 24 and the gaming performance will be the same as it is now. If you added another 8 instead, the RAM would run in dual channel mode for a 3-15% increase in gaming performance depending on the game.

      @BartechTV  4 роки тому +2

      If you spill water on a laptop, the most important thing is to turn it off as quickly as possible. Open it up and remove the battery. Allow it to dry for at least 48 hours before trying to turn it on, as if you turn it on while the motherboard it wet, you risk shorting something which could burn out a surface mount component.
      If you prefer, you can open it up, remove the motherboard (follow the steps in the official Hardware Maintenance Manual at download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/legion_y540-15irh_pg0_hmm_201904.pdf).
      Then clean the motherboard with 99% Isopropyl alcohol, which will displace any water on the board and evaporate quickly without leaving any residue. After it's dry you can replace the motherboard and try turning it on.

    Is it worth to have 32g ram?

    • @rengokufan123
      @rengokufan123 3 роки тому

      It depends on what you normally use the pc for. If you are doing gaming and light-to-medium editing, then 16 GB should be good enough.
      If you are consistently using the pc for heavy editing and rendering, 32 GB would be a good investment.

    Tha was a nice video. I have one doubt. I have Legion Y540-15IRH with 8GB ram. To upgrade the ram I have bought and installed
    HyperX Impact 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL15 260-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory (HX426S15IB2/16)
    .
    But once installed the speed reduced to 2400MHz from 2666MHz. Is this something expected or need to update any settings?
    Kindly assist.
