    I’ll show you how to upgrade the Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptop, including battery, RAM, WiFi, M.2 SSD and 2.5” storage drive. I’ll also run benchmark tests before and after upgrading to see what performance differences this makes in games and applications.
    Everything used for the upgrade:
    Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptop: geni.us/9gL5
    iFixit Pry Tools: geni.us/eT3n
    Intel WiFi 6e AX210NGW: amzn.to/385LvF5
    ADATA RAM (2x 32GB): amzn.to/351Lct4
    ADATA SX8200 M.2 SSD: amzn.to/2MsmCv1
    Samsung 2.5” SSD: amzn.to/3hB4tGM
    80Wh Battery (some options as often out of stock):
    * Amazon: amzn.to/353VxVv
    * Lenovo Replacement Parts: lenovo.encompass.com/item/125...
    * This is the exact listing I bought from (L19M4PC1): www.storebattery.sg/l19m4pc1-... it’s a Singapore site, but there is also an international version of the site here that offers the other model: www.laptop-parts-shop.com/l19... they shipped me L19C4PC2, which worked.
    You can check compatible parts for the Legion 5 here: pcsupport.lenovo.com/au/en/pr...
    I’m using the 15ARH05H model in this video.

    Pro tip for those who are new to Lenovo laptops!
    If your laptop is plugged in most of the time, Lenovo has a function in their Vantage software called "Conservation Mode", which helps limit the battery charge to 60% when you're plugged in. This helps preserve your battery's health. My Legion 5 is now 3 months old and only has gone through 15 charge cycles!

      @@bipbop3121 I would love it if Lenovo had the option to go for a higher percentage, though I’m sure they’ve done their research before coming to the decision of setting it to 60 by default.

    PS: It is recommended to disconnect Power Battery (not cmos battery) before doing anything on the laptop's internal.
    You do not want to accidentally turn on the laptop while installing devices.

      I heard that this laptop has an option to disable the battery in bios. So would that be the best option? So that you don't need to disconnect the battery and risk accidentally damaging the cables or whatever if you are unexperienced.

      no matter what it is... car, motorcycle, rv, computer, gaming console, PC, fridge, microwave...doesn't matter.
      As a safety precaution for both yourself and the devices you are working on always disconnect from the power source.

    Just a note to people upgrading brand new Legion 5s. the newer ones (like the one I purchased) have different motherboards installed meaning a 2.5inch SSD or HDD can't be installed into it, an M.2 SSD can still be installed in the same way. Another thing to watch out for is the RAM, the motherboard in the newer ones isn't XMP based meaning XMP ram (what's commonly sold) won't work at full speed.

    You might be able to use the M.2 drive as well as a 2.5 inch SATA SSD at the same time if you take apart the 2.5 inch SSD by removing it's plastic housing. Inside that there's a high chance you'll have a small circuit board which is the SSD. I like that Lenovo included the four SSD screws even though they are very much standard screws that are likely to come with the SSD as well. And their decision to specially design a piece of plastic to hold them is so smart as well. They could have just gone lazy and put them in the plastic bag with other accessories, which the user is unlikely to remember or even notice. It's details like this that make me approve of a product that much more.

      Upgrading RAM isn't for higher framerates, it's so when you get a memory leak it doesn't completely crash your computer, and you can run 800 chrome tabs. It's also extremely useful for audio editing as you can run a lot of VSTs simultaneously, on 16GB you would get an instant crash on a complicated track. Also, let's say you build a program that's large like a video game, you may need more than 16GB just to build. Or if you want to rewrite a large Git history. Or if you're a scientist and you want to analyse a large dataset.
      I got 64GB last feb and since then my computer has never stalled and I am constantly running unity, photoshop, fl studio, resolve, bitbucket, rider, 100 tabs in firefox, thunderbird, filezilla, google sync, playstation and xbox devkit tools. Often streaming on slobs, have excel open in the background, a bunch of copies of ms paint with screenshots open, everything, my music editor, my vpn, steam, avast, parsec. I have never gone above 40GB even during memory leaks. I used to max 24GB all the time.

    As an owner of this machine, I feel like some important topics were missed here.
    Upgrading RAM isn't just about capacity. Sometimes it is about performance. What will this machine do with tighter timings? What are the actual limits it will accept? Is there a 3400MT/s or faster kit available that will work?
    Can the cooling be upgraded? I know in the past, Lenovo has different cooling for different SKUs. I also own the 1660Ti version. Is the 2060 cooling module better? If so, would it be possible to upgrade to the 2060 cooling kit to improve temps? If you can, does that improve performance in any meaningful way?

      @waldojim42 Рік тому +1

      @@SeudXe I was asking as the "upgrade guide" was missing the upgrades that appeared to be worth doing. It is common practice to have different cooling based upon the build. First I ran into that, was with the W520. Upgrading from a dual core to a quad core included a cooling upgrade. Upgrading from the low end to high end GPU involved a cooling upgrade. And you could purchase, and install that upgraded cooler yourself if you wanted to lower temps on parts that weren't maxed out for the platform.
      I assumed the same would apply to the Legion 5 - given the upgraded parts available. However, that topic was never approached by the author.
