Question/Issue: Hi, I have a Y740 and just updated it with a 1 EVO970 Plus NVMe SSD and a 2TB EVO SSD. On the Information window in BIOS the 2TB EVO SSD is assigned to Disk 1 and 1TB 970EVO Plus is assigned to Disk 2. It should be reversed. Also, It doesn't list the 1TB NVMe in the Boot Manger, only the DISK 1 2TB SSD. The only way I can get the 1TB NVME to boot is to remove the 2TB EVO SSD. The only way I get both drives to show up in the BIOS is buy enabling Legacy mode. I enable Legacy support by switching the to ACHI storage controller. Then can see both drives, but the system will not boot with both drives installed .

Thank you so much for this video, it is precisely what I needed! A very calm voice and good edited as well. One question tho, you are saying that the SSHD is almost as fast as an SSD. Do you think AAA-titles such as Witcher and Exodus will run properly on the SSHD? I was willing to upgrade my 128gb SSD to 480, but after seeing your video, I might consider doing the HDD upgrade instead.
You should not replase SSD with SSHD expecting the same performance. SSHD can work almost as fast as SSD but only in limited circumstances when for example you learn the SSHD that you use certain program often. Then SSHD gets faster with each run of this program or windows start, but idk how it works exactly. It has it's own memory but idk how much it can remember and if it doesn't forget things. ;)

Can we use the HyperX 2666MHz ram stick mentioned in your description to upgrade the Legion 5i model along with the pre-installed 2933MHz ram stick present in it?
Can I install 8gb(stock) + 32gb/16gb(crucial or sth else) = total(40gb/24gb)? I mean by only considering the same frequency of RAM cards and not having the same size.

Sure, you will have a slot for 2.5" drive free so you can put HDD or SSD in there. You can install Windows on your own, but i recommend to buy model with Windows already installed as it comes with essential software and settings that define how your laptop works.
It's always better to buy from manufacturer directly, but Amazon is safe generally. Just choose the items with high number of reviews and check the comments

Hi, thanks for the video, and i have a doubt that , i already have 2400Hz 8gb Ram preinstalled can i add 2666Hz 8gb Ram in other slot, which is of same company or will there be any compatible issues?
Pls give reply asap!!!
You can mix frequency so the ram will downclock to 2400MHz in this case, but i still recommend to match the RAM specs
I noticed in the frequency of the RAMS you linked in the description are all 2666Mhz, are higher frequency not compatible with the laptop?
No, 2666MHz is max
Do you lose warranty if you upgrade ram ?
It may vary between countries, you you'll end up better reading your warranty card or contacting Lenovo support
can you please give the link of screw driver or opening kit please ? Also I have y540 with i5 9300h with 512 ssd, and I have hdd slot empty so can I add 1tb or 512gb sshd in that slot or i need to add hdd please answer. If yes also please recommend me a 512 gb sshd for my laptop and I please provide the link outside for outside of usa.
i still dont have the guts to do this hahaha i feel like its gonna breake when trying to unclip the cover
Yee it makes scary noises but there's no other way to open it :D
Can you please link where i can buy tools you using in this video?
I bought this kit at local store. Just type in "precision screwdriver kit" on Amazon or Google and find something that suits you. ;)
Thank you for the info, very complete.
Hi Guys, can I install 2 units of SSD with my Legion Y540 motherboard? Or its always 1 HDD and 1SSD ?
You can have 2.5" SSD instead of HDD if you want
@@TechFinds thank you. But of course there is no chance to install 2 units of M.2 right ?
@@gdivision951 There is only 1 slot for M.2 SSD. You could eventually install M.2 SSD in 2.5" drive bay using adaptor but it would be limited to SATA cable connection anyway.
I just bought this for $900 and I love it and I was thinking of adding more storage so this helped a lot. I dont think I need to add more ram but if I do, do I have to take out both of the ones that are installed or just one?
You can add or replace both or only one stick if you want. Mae sure to match the specs if you mix other RAM with original
@@TechFinds yeah the links you provided on the description match my ram as well so thank you for that lol
Hey
Looking to upgrade my y540's ram from 8gb to 16gb since I want to take full advantage of the rtx2060 it came with when gaming
Should I go with a single 16gb 3200mhz or just put a second 8gb 2666mhz alongside the one that's already in my laptop
It's about 40$ more if I go with the 3200mhz one but if the difference in performance is noticeable I think it's worth it
Will the difference be noticeable though?
I would recommend buying 1 more 8gb stick with the same specs so the dual channel will be activated. with single 16GB stick you don't benefit of dual channel
@@TechFinds thanks man appreciate it
Thank you so much for this video, it is precisely what I needed!
It has it's own memory but idk how much it can remember and if it doesn't forget things. ;)
@@TechFinds Alright. Thank you for the fast reply. I guess I go into more research before I decide! Have a good one :)
Very nice video. Recently I have purchased Legion Y540 with “AMD Ryzen 7 4800H”.
Can I upgrade my SSD and RAM. Bcoz it is having only 128GB SSD, And having only 16GB of RAM.
Plz reply me
Sure, you can. 16GB RAM is actually enough for gaming, especially when it's 2x8GB
Tech Finds
First of all Thank You so much for Taking out thr time and answering my query.
The reason for upgrading the RAM, SSD and SSHD is I run VM(Virtual Machine) which consumes a lot of resource.
So for this reason only I am upgrading it.
@@sohailahmedsyed9351 Even if it's not gaming, the more RAM the better performance at any task
Does the metal frame come with the sshd when you order it? I've never had a laptop before and I want to buy this one and I want to know every little detail.
No, you should get the frame with the laptop.
@@TechFinds Okay thank you for the response. Does the metal frame work with a normal SSD too?
@@GTRadu yep if the ssd is 2.5" too
@@TechFinds Thank you for answering my stupid questions. Dropped a like on your video too!
Thanks! I download the HDD Disk and is working. :)
Good video, but you must correct the links to the M.2 SATA type because they are not compatible with this laptop. The right options are M.2 PCIe, not SATA.
Hello, do you know which gen of M.2 PCIe is compatible with the motherboard of legion y540 (Gen 4 or Gen 3)?
I got this laptop with an optane+hdd combo and it was total shit. Swapped it out with an ssd and oh my god! Best decision ever!
Can we use the HyperX 2666MHz ram stick mentioned in your description to upgrade the Legion 5i model along with the pre-installed 2933MHz ram stick present in it?
If you gonna mix with original RAM you better don't use HyperX. Go for Crucial that i linked as it has the same specs as original RAM
Can I install 8gb(stock) + 32gb/16gb(crucial or sth else) = total(40gb/24gb)?
I mean by only considering the same frequency of RAM cards and not having the same size.
This laptop supports up to 32 GB so you cna have 8+24. However it's recommended to have both sticks of the same size
@@TechFinds Okay. I will rather prefer 8+8 to keep it the same size.
Short, Concise, to the point,.. wow Lovely info... 👍 + 👌
Thanks for commenting ;)
I just wanted to upgrade the Ram...this helped thanks
Where can you get the tool equipment to take it apart and what are they.
Type in "precision screwdriver kit" on Amazon and you'll see a list of suitable products
Tech Finds 🙏 thx🙂
I can put both hdd and ssd right?
Hi...
I want to upgrade my M2 to a 1Tb Samsung Evo 970.
Just wanna know if it's compatibles with my the Y540
Yes you can install it
@@TechFinds thanks... and good video!👌
Hi, do you know where I could find the cable from the hard drive to the bay? Thx!
No idea mate. Contact Lenovo support so maybe they can guide you
@@TechFinds Thx for your time.
2:04 is there anyway i can repair the spot where hdd cable meets botherboard, i mean that little white plastic and metal thing? because after an hit my hdd disconnected and there is nothing holdin that cable to the motherboard...hdd was making sounds so i guess mby its dead aswell
I think you need an expert to fix that. It requires replacing the connector maybe which involves soldering
First of all, thank you ! Your guide is easy to understand and short !
But i have a question, i've heard about the possibility of adding another SSD/HDD IN the Lenovo Legion, is it really possible ? Cuz i got this pc and when i added some RAM, i did not see any place to put in.
This model has one slot for M.2 SSD and one slot for 2.5" HDD or SSD. Check in the video where these slots are located
@@TechFinds thank you!
where do you get those plastic prying tools?
I bought a precision screwdriver kit and i got them included.
@@TechFinds thanks a lot for responding
@@TechFinds I was wondering if you remember where you got the kit from?
@@columbusross2955 I bought it on Amazon in the UK. It was a decent-looking kit to be honest with a lot of various tools, but you can choose any kit you like
@@TechFinds Alright, thanks a lot!
Is the Graphic Card able to be upgraded ?
No, you can't upgrade it
If I opt for the SSD only variant then I get the option to add a SATA SSD in the future but my question is if I buy a SSD say for example the Crucial MX500 will I get the SSD along with the sata to motherboard connector or only the SSD ?
By default you'll get this laptop with M.2 SSD which means that you'll have free slot for 2.5" SATA SSD. You can add it in the future and connect it with SATA cable
@@TechFinds What about the SATA cable will I have to buy it separately ?
@@L-CSE-AyanKumar No idea mate. I don't know if you can use any sata cable if LEnovo won't provide you with one for this laptop
Hi, my laptop is a Lenovo Y545 model, and I plan to upgrade my 128gb ssd into 512 GB, but its module/pin is B+M key, would it work on a only M key like on the video? Thanks
Is the graphics card upgradable?
No, you can't upgrade CPU or GPU

Hey may u can help me brother? I bought a Lenovo y540 this year and I don't have the 2 Screws on the side and the one on the Cooler how can I open that one?
Hey there neat video.
What is the maximum size for the 2.5" sata and for the m.2 2280? In my country they say i can only put 1TB IN each but wanted 2TB IN one for starting upgrade. My SN PF1XFN2Y thank you in advance.
Also where can I find the cable by amazon? Or should lenovo local lab is the only source?
Acer nitro 7 vs legion y540. Which would be better ?? Value for money
The prices vary between countries. As for the laptop itself i think that i would go for Nitro 7 i think. Both have not very good cooling but with Acer you can at least control the fan speed.
Hey, I want to buy Legion Y740 and there is only a version with only 512GB SSD but no HDD. Is it possible for me, when I get it, to put a HDD inside of it? Is there space for it? Thank you!
And also there is a version with a noOS operating system but it is few hundred dollars cheaper but i wonders if i would be able to get windows on it or not?
Sure, you will have a slot for 2.5" drive free so you can put HDD or SSD in there.
You can install Windows on your own, but i recommend to buy model with Windows already installed as it comes with essential software and settings that define how your laptop works.
Is it safe to buy it from amazon ? I ordered it but my family is concerned that it won't be authentic. Please answer
It's always better to buy from manufacturer directly, but Amazon is safe generally. Just choose the items with high number of reviews and check the comments
when i changing ram should i disconnect battery?
For safety precautions, yes. But the guy in the video didn't.
